lol you're not alone brother.
Well Duck is a trademark(duck brand tape), but Duck tape is well duck tape, as there is such thing as Duct tape, tape specially made for air ducts. If you use duck tape on air ducts, most of the time it will fall off due to the frequent expansion and contraction of the ducts.

during the 70's and 80's the South Africans also covered the leading edges of expensive helicopter rotor blades with duct tape, thereby extending the life span of these rotor blades. it was easy to replace the tape regularly, and it prevented nicks caused by sand, stones and flying debris.

It is called Duck tape. The brand is duck tape. Duct tape is better suited for air ducts, is my understanding.
They are basically the same but Duct tape has a metal or metal-like material in the tape so it could be a temporary fix for a damaged air duct (hence the name)
Brings back memories, I wrapped a rotor blade in summer of 68 near Plekui that had several holes in it.

As a doctor trained and working in India, we learned to use Leucoplast, a white, sticky tape to repair leaking tubes, hold bandages or plaster in place, seal leaking uro bags and the like. It was a skill to tear it with your fingers after you took out the required amount from the spool. Leucoplast was also a product of Johnson and Johnson, though many local variants were also available. Now lighter porous paper tape is used, but we miss the Leucoplast.

WELL a ingenious soldier may duct tape multiple frag grenades together into a deadly weapon, or use duct tape to camouflage things that aren't green. Like with enough tape you could make a ghillie vest. To tape grass and such to the uniform and helmet.
I wonder if duct tape can be used with metal parts to make makeshift suppressors.

It was invented by a mom , I believe for her son at war, She named it Duck Tape, and the company name still exists.
"The iconic tape was invented by an Illinois mom named Vesta Stoudt who wanted to save soldiers’ lives in World War II. The year was 1943 and Stoudt, who had two sons serving in the U.S. Navy, was working at the Green River Ordnance Plant near Amboy, Illinois." She worked for Johnson and Johnson.

The 'duck tape' from WWII wasn't made of duck fabric, which is a kind of light canvas. It was more-or-less the same as present-day duct tape, and got the 'duck' name because it was waterproof. There was an earlier, non self-adhesive duck-cloth tape used as a reinforcing material for construction projects, which is where the confusion comes from.

To me duck tape is the same as gaffer tape. Can be torn off the roll and has a cotton type woven material in it. Can be any colour but mostly I've used black. What I've used as duct tape is a silver foil type tape with a fibreglass mesh material and can't be torn off the roll, needs to be cut off with a blade or scissors. It also has a peel off backing on it and is not stuck to itself on the roll. Maybe that's just me but it could be marketed differently in different countries. I've found the later to be far harder to remove than the cloth type of duck/gaffer tape and won't tear off very easy at all.
