    It's actually backwards. Live you need the mids - recording you can scoop here and there.

    You should have shown some examples of what your preferred live tone is and how it sounds recorded vs your recorded tone after you've done the adjustments.
    Then add some useful info like what mic you used and what frequencies get affected with that mic that require adjustment on the amp to sound like you want it to sound once recorded.

      this I also expected when I saw those amps...to hear the live tone and the one for recording. how I can hear in room. I already know that have to be different and with mids and not too much bass

    Not really an experience, but I’ve always had a thought. The tone you get is your tone, it won’t ever be the same as tone of your favourite guitarist. Example, if someone has favoured guitarist like Steve Vai, the person wouldn’t ever get his tone cause Steve Vai’s tone is unique to him if the person says “I wanna get Steve Vai’s tone cause I like his sound”

      If you really you wanted Steve Vai's tone you'd probably have to buy a shit ton of gear to get a sound that's probably not even close

    It took a long time for me to get a tone I was satisfied with. I went through a shit-ton of crappy amps in the beginning. And I finally figured out that the amp was pretty much my problem. And as soon as I got the amp I use now, it was night and day mann! And over time I learned a lot about how to produce a really quality sounding song. I don't mess with the mixing very much, when it comes to guitars anyways. I have most of that taken care of with the presets I've made on my amp. Over time I just found a formula that works for me. For me it was mostly experience and trial by error lol
    And the people that try to replicate album tones make me laugh lol I mean, I've always liked the AJFA tone, but I don't have the gear they had, nor do I have Hetfield's hands lol! I just think people should spend more time finding 'their' tone, and not worry about comparing to somebody else's.

      Some people just want to play the classic songs in their bedroom with a matching tone.

    That's why I use a kemper for live tones because I've made profiled of the recorded tones, and it captures how the mic colours the tone.

  • @AtTheSourceStudios
    @AtTheSourceStudios 5 років тому

    Honestly the difference in what you hear recorded versus live is because you're hearing the room as well. The room the amp is in actually colors the tone by the time it hits your ears. If you have your head directly up to the speaker like the mic would be when recording it will sound more like the tone you record.

  • @MrBoggles
    @MrBoggles 5 років тому

    The thing about it is.. where your ears are (picking up room reflections etc and generally well above and away from the speaker), are not where the mic is.. put your ear where the mic is and you'll hear something very different..
    Put the cab in the room mic it up, bring the head to the recording desk and ring a good mic placement and shape the sound whilst you listen to the monitors.

    Great topic for a video Matt! I have some badass amps & my live tones are incredible BUT, I so struggle with recorded tones. My recorded tones always sound fizzy and for the life of me cannot get it right. This is the reason I primarily stick to using Bias FX.

  • @AtTheSourceStudios

    You should try recording using the fx loop send into interface and cab impulse response. Much more consistent, easier to control and EQ in post as a result and the biggest plus - you don't have to blast your amp.

  • @AtlasGuitar
    @AtlasGuitar 5 років тому

    Oh, how true this is. I've just decided to stop micing my cab and to just use impulse responses to get my distorted tone when I want to record. I couldn't for the life of me get a tone that sounded good when I recorded more than one track.

    I was wondering about if the sound sounds different compared to life and recorded. I don't really hear a difference I have a guitar at home And I Was experimenting if the sound sounded different compared to live and recorded. I think it just depends on The settings on the amp.

  • @Albee213
    @Albee213 Рік тому

    Microphones are not your ears and speakers are not your amp. Less distortion is key to heavy guitars in a mix, ESPECIALLY if you do overdubs.

    Are you the illigitimate son of one of the band member of Spinal Tap ? Hillarious man!

  • @vaughanmacegan4012
    @vaughanmacegan4012 5 років тому +1

    To get the album tone, you are also going to have to get the rest of the band playing on that song to get that tone. So if you are after a specific Dream Theatre tone you will have to get the other members of Dream Theatre to play on your song, so, that your tone will cut through on the mix. If you don't then you are going to get mud.
    By the way you do realize that you are *not* "Playing Authentic"?

    A digital effects processor will get you album tone, and a decent tube amp will get you that live sound. Another thing, Metallica songs are mostly in E standard. If you want to get that "live Metallica" sound, try tuning down half a step.

    Scooped don`t work in a mix eyh? Listen to Pantera-CFH, Justice by Metallica and Beneath the Remains by Sepultura just to name a few 😉 All scooped to shit but sounds gnarly and heavy as shit to me, and the guitars stand out pretty good to me man, it will work, just takes a little bit more work and yes you do have to record several of guitar tracks to make it work(like I have done for some stuff), but it is worth it 😉 But yeah it is different live, even Dime`s live tone was quite a bit different from his studio tone.
