In one episode of the show, the local policeman says to Lady P "Oh, it's you, M'Lady. I thought I recognised the car."
With those powers of observation he should have been a detective instead of just a plod on the beat.

After rattling around on the odd ITV region during the 1980s, it had a huge revival when BBC Two ran it on Friday evenings (alongside classic 'Doctor Who') in the early 1990s - with the classic tie-in 'Blue Peter' Tracey Island make, and several more revivals after that.

Having been born in the early 60s, I feel sad sometimes because videos like this, remind me just how Simple and innocent life was back then: there was so much optimism and Fun; the people who built that ridiculous contraption, did it for sheer enjoyment, fully aware it was ridiculous...but it gave so much pleasure to so many kids (and I daresay, a few adults). Sad we have lost that innocence from those days...

Innocence is the thing. Everything nowadays and for the past couple of decades (says an oldie like me born in the late '70s, ahem!!) seems to have need for such attitude and aggression, even the stuff aimed towards children. Even with something like FAB1's crime fighting skills, pretend machine guns et al, it was all innocence and knowing, harmless make-believe fun. Innocence and imagination were the two things that fuelled our young lives.

I have been in this car!
It arrived at our Saturday morning pictures at the old ABC Granada cinema in Portland Road, Hove, Sussex. There was an announcement at the end of our Saturday morning film show and we all filed out to the rear car park to see this amazing car. We queued up and took our turns sitting in the rear seat, it sat three kids across and as one kid got out of the right hand door, we shuffled up and the next kid got in via the left hand door and so on.
The thing that amazed me most was the telephone! There was actually a telephone in the car. At that time we never had a phone in our house (in fact we never had one up until the time I left home in 1981!!!). We used the local phone box to make calls, so to see one in a car made us pretty excited.
After about a minute my time in FAB1 was up and out of the door I went…
The car was huge and a lovely colour pink. I assume it went to cinemas and events on a countrywide tour?
Around 54 years ago now, but I still remember it well…F.A.B😜

I was with my Dad and best pal. I remember the car’s handler said it had 2, Triumph Herald, double wishbone suspensions up front to give it 4 steering wheels, and a Morris Oxford rear axle. Not so sure about the engine but I think he said it had a Rover 3500 V8. I’m writing this at the very beginning of the vid, so I may be contradicted somewhere in the Vid. Yes, at the time British product was hard to sell to the U.S. That is one of the reasons why the programme revolved around an American family with the token pucker English accent of Lady P thrown in, which was, I'm sure, how most Americans believed English people spoke (at that time). I think the Beatles helped to break that mold. After the so called "British Invasion" we could do no wrong.
I was 8 when Thunderbirds came to my tiny little black and white TV set standing in the corner of the front room in our terraced house back in 1965.
It was such a revelation. I can remember the pilot episode "Trapped In The Sky" vividly. For the next 12 months or so while the series was on air, the world of Thunderbirds dominated mine and my friends' lives.
I used to think "how did they do that?" when refineries were being blown up or the Hood's car burst into flames down an embankment after feeling the wrath of FAB 1..... and I am still asking that question today when I watch the same scenes again nearly 60 years later.
Thunderbirds remains to this day my favourite TV programme.

They were very supportive of the TV car. But they took a severe dislike to the full sized car. It was notoriously unreliable and RR made several attempts to buy it to destroy it. Eventually it was found by a dentist who collected film and TV vehicles. It was in a barn and in a very poor state. He bought it, renovated it and installed it in his "Cars of the Stars" museum in Keswick. He had one of the 5 Batmobiles used in the sixties TV series, the Munster's car, the Back to the Future De Lorean and KITT among many others.
Eventually the museum closed and the contents were sold to a car museum in Florida.
As I found out when I made a return there.
The museum had a sign in the window saying it had moved to Miami. Like those signs in a shop window saying "We've moved around the corner" worded as if you could just pop on the bus to Miami to visit it.

I think they meant 150 KM per hour. The 3 litre engine probably was an Austin C series straight 6 (about 120hp) the Ford Essex series V6 litre (118-140hp) or the Rover P5 straight 6 (115-131hp). Even in the 1.6 ton Rover P5, the car only had a top speed of 103 mph - so the chances of 150mph in a 3 ton aerodynamic brick is unlikely. (Maybe Brains tuned up the car).

For a car that was designed to tour on promotional events, it had had quite a hard life from wear and tear of adoring young fans. If memory serves (possibly not), the car has undergone a more fully renovation in more recent years, possibly from it's current private owner.

I had the Corgi version of this, The car was painted shocking pink. Mine had a rocket launcher behind the grille, which opened bottomhinged forwards to fire the rocket (which was functional). There is no way on earth a three litre engine, which in 1965 would have typically produced 140 hp, would propel a three ton car to 150 mph. That was a figment of Gerry Anderson's imagination. The contemporary 150 mph E-Type Jaguar had half the weight and almost twice the power.
