I honestly don’t know what all the fuss is about. These men are clearly using standard 1970’s safety equipment, flared jeans, BRUT aftershave and 20 Benson and Hedges.

I agree. Watched it (aged 7) without a second thought, just one of the many things the Blue Peter team did. Now......... I can't quite believe it. Really? no safety rope, ladder overhang, flared jeans. One slip and it's curtains.

Me too. How on EARTH was this allowed to be done without even a safety rope. Even in 1977 people understood gravity.
I remember that John Noakes had some harsh words after he left Blue Peter about how the Producers had scant regard for his safety. He clearly had a point.

When I was young I noticed a lot of men with missing fingers, etc. Also, have a look at the statistics such as the number of men who died building the Sydney Harbour Bridge and other large structures. He was a seemingly ordinary bloke, whom captured millions' of childrens imagination with his infectious character and preparedness to have a go at just about everything. Inspiring and courageous as well as imbued with a great sense of humour.
