Jon Pertwee got the the who mobil after he left the show. According to his son Sean they would take it out to open supermarkets and things and get stopped by the police just so they could have a turn behind the wheel.

Actually it wasn't the BBCs car; it was Jon himself who commissioned and had it built... Mainly because he wanted to get it into Doctor Who. According to one of the DVD documentaries he showed up at the studio one day and parked it so it could be seen from the Who offices hoping to catch Barry Lett's attention.

That's the sort of car a child in 1973 would think we'd be driving (flying?) 50 years later. But it's that Dr Who theme tune - it just transports me back (if you pardon the pun).

Aside from the car (which didn't really catch on) this clip really does show how attitudes to television have changed. Purves does not mention, even in passing, that he was once a regular in the show, a mere seven years previous. What was past was past, and forgotten. Or in the good Doctor's case, wiped.

Agreed - and the 'Earth - based' episodes he starred in, set in the 70s supposedly to save money on sets - turned out to be some of the best.
-as for the car, it's reg. is listed on DVLA as a 'Whomobile Alien' although untaxed since 1997..
"The vehicle was not created for Doctor Who, but was personally commissioned by Jon Pertwee, who retained possession of it after his tenure as the Doctor. Pertwee gave it the name "Whomobile" during press interviews, but it was also known - again, off-screen - as "Alien". Had the vehicle been named in Doctor Who, it almost certainly would not have been called "the Whomobile", as this violated producer Barry Letts's strong conviction against making plays on the programme's title. The Doctor Who Technical Manual referred to it simply as "the Doctor's Car." In spite of this, the name was indeed given as "the Whomobile" in the audio drama featuring Pertwee and Elisabeth Sladen, Glorious Goodwood. This was much later reaffirmed in Bessie Come Home.
The Whomobile (reg: WVO 2M) was one of Jon Pertwee's personal vehicles. He retained possession of it until nearly the end of his life.
The Whomobile was hastily written into the script of Invasion of the Dinosaurs, where it replaced an army motorcycle as the Doctor's transport around the deserted London. The Whomobile's roof/door section had not been completed at the time of filming, so a motor-boat windscreen was fitted to make the car legally roadworthy. The vehicle was classified technically as an "Invalid Tricycle".
When Pertwee demonstrated the vehicle to Peter Purves on the 5 November 1973 edition of Blue Peter during his tenure, he revealed that the vehicle was roadworthy and legal, though he mentioned that the BBC forbade him or any of the production crew from removing it from the studios except for outside shoots. It was capable of a top speed of 105 mph (roughly 169 km/h). Footage of this is available on the DVD release of Invasion of the Dinosaurs and the Season 10 Blu-ray.
An extra on The Three Doctors DVD reveals Jon Pertwee introduced it on Blue Peter prior to its debut."

The Pertwee Doctor Who era was largely set in a near-future Britain, when The Doctor was exiled to earth by the Timelords, and got a job with U.N.I.T.
In that context, even if The Doctor made himself a car, it would still need to be road legal; something Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart would no doubt have insisted on, given it would be driven by a U.N.I.T. employee.
The Doctor had previously made Bessie to get himself around in, and that was road legal too.

Toys R Us sold out !
I do apologise for the long reply....but
I couldn't believe it at the time Every night around 8:00 o'clock I would fire up the satellite & I would watch Top of the pops from 1975 I didn't even know it existed then,
I thought it was an 80s programme, However this totps Didn't have a wiped out Jimmy Savile, then they would put Doctor Who on With John Pertrie It was so different from the modern doctor who that I'd seen in the mid 80s as he seemed to be in one place with some Army colonel and driving an old fashioned car but I do remember the the flying car
1992 were the first days of cable and satellite For the working class of course plus they would show The old Coronation Street from the late 60s and early 70s On Granada Plus, It was in colour but the actors and actresses seemed so thin and young, I was way too Young to understand weight gain in an adult
And To top that off on a Friday night around 9:00 o'clock 9:00 PM if you were lucky and Mom and dad were down the pub, You could flick through the channels and find a soft core German porn movie, Something trust me I wasn't used to but most of my friends at school were And would giggle about it On Monday morning Assembly

My favorite Dr Who when I was growing up ❤ and what a magnificent machine and expert driving on Blue Peter, I'm surprised we didn't go that way or use police phone boxes for transportation instead of electric vehicles..😆

    • @BungleBare

I’d guess it could have been based on a Bond 875; a rear engined 3 wheeler from the late sixties. The mechanicals were basically the engine and drivetrain from a Hillman Imp.
You’re not far off with mention of a Reliant Robin if the Whomobile was based on a Bond 875 though; Reliant bought Bond around that the turn of the ‘70s, and some of the 875’s ideas ended up in the Robin. The Robin stayed front-engined though, as was Reliant’s normal way of doing things.

Jon Pertwee was the best Dr Who and the best series, it was of a particular time, it is the one I remember watching as a kid, Tom Baker was pretty good but I never quite got used to him, maybe I was getting older, I've never watched any of the modern versions, I wonder if that Who mobile is still around, I read that it actually belonged to Jon Pertwee and that it was commissioned for one story of episodes to replace a motorbike that had originally been in the script, the rest of the time Jon Pertwee as Dr Who drove around in a yellow vintage Edwardian car.
