George Carlin (1937 - 2008) was an American stand-up comedian, actor, amateur philosopher, author, and social critic. He was known for his black comedy and reflections on politics, the English language, psychology, religion, and various taboo subjects. He and his "seven dirty words" comedy routine were central to the 1978 U.S. Supreme Court case F.C.C. v. Pacifica Foundation, in which a 5-4 decision affirmed the government's power to regulate indecent material on the public airwaves. Widely regarded as one of the most important and influential American stand-up comics of all time, Carlin was dubbed by one newspaper to be "the dean of counterculture comedians".
Tom Snyder (1936 - 2007) was an American pioneering television personality and figure in broadcast journalism who brought a no non-sense attitude to broadcast television news. He was best known for his late nigh talk shows Tomorrow (NBC) and The Late Late Show with Tom Snyder (CBS). His engaging style combined with his irascible attitude, made him one of the best known journalists of his time, back when having a nationally televised and thought provoking late night talk show actually meant something. It was a totally different time in television, as the news was delivered as information with no spin or opinion of the newsman. He marked the end of an era.

Snyder definitely knew how to conduct an interview. I remember these, from 'back in the day'. Very enjoyable. Carlin was amazing.

I found Tom as a teenager one night alone in my bedroom. I was drawn to his voice and his candor. Everynight that summer weekday I stayed up to watch but, mostly to listen. He opened up a world I never dreamed of. Thank you!!! Keep posting!!!

I was a kid in the 1970s and liked staying up late and was so happy when the the Tomorrow show with Tom Snyder came on after Johnny Carson in 1973 because before that the TV station would actually go off the air after Carson so there was nothing to watch.

I watched Tom as a kid on the Tomorrow Show then later in my 20s he was on nighttime radio.
Didn't catch the Late Late show because I didn't have the channel.
Tom was the best interviewer ever to grace the airwaves.
I don't think any guests were nervous about going on unlike other shows.
Just pure class and I miss him.

Guests really liked Tom and he had a great sense of humor.
To Snyder, Dick Cavet, those guys from that era had class and they did great interviews.

Wow. I’m a fan of George but I didn’t know Tom Snyder. What a voice!. What a way to interact with George. He made of that interview a very a pleasant conversation. Now I’m going to have to find more about Tom. What a difference between his show and today’s late night shows.

Tom Snyder was a total class act, I was a high school kid at this time and his style was so refreshing and made intellectualism cool and interesting. Love you Tom!
george was so brutally honest, his take on drugs is very insightful, without all the idiotic stereotypes and public announcement messages, he just tells it like it is, was. as an artist you do use it as a lift, times when i was doing labor work, it became so much easier getting thru the day high, work almost became fun, without it, it was pure drudgery.
i never understood people who go to "work" happy about what they're doing. straight. altho there are advantages in blue collar work, like being outside, being away from structure, rigidity. tried the office thing and it was impossible, all the politics and stupid rules... i once got wrote up for candy at my desk, i forced them to write "m & m's" as the reason for my write up. and taking drugs on that job wouldn't help.

Very moving tribute to her at the end. Carlin's gifts as a wordsmith weren't always about his comedy.
it's really interesting to me the way he phrases the split up of his mom and his dad, "...actually she was more *dramatic* than that, she actually *ran away from him* when I was two months old..."
"Carry money -- it's easier!" I agree 100%, but that horse has left the barn. Half the places you go into today won't even accept money -- you have to pull out a credit card for a cup of coffee or a beer.
The plastic has become more convienient now. I would always end up with a handful of wadded-up singles stuffed in my pockets every day 😖
In 1997 debit cards were still a new thing. Now, in my opinion, they're more convenient than cash. And credit cards are much faster than in 1997, too. You rarely have to sign for an everyday purchase now and they're not manually running it through one of those big bulky readers.

I didn't want this to end, with tears in my eyes, I watched Tom for many years 70s and on, I loved every moment, I loved George too, his view of America was 100% correct, I wish both were still with us today, I'm sure they would have plenty to say and be disgusted with what goes on now.

George was in the Air Force required to follow orders, many that didn't make sense. He was such a wild, crazy guy who marched to the beat of his own drum. I so would love him tell what life was like for him while in the service.
Strangely, not only was Tom Snyder and George Carlin both born on May 12th, but they were born only one year apart (Tom was born on 5/12/36 and George was born on 5/12/37), they both died at the age of 71 and only one year apart (Tom died on 7/29/07 and George died on 6/22/08). Life is so nuts!

Sad to me that Carlin was so incredibly brilliant and funny and yet could not see the obvious order in the universe and that we all came from a Creator of it all the Lord God Almighty. I dare say that he now knows.
