When first I saw this band on "Twiggy's Juke box" here in 1972 So Cal, I actually became OBSESSED with their Great songs and Image.....Not a lie to say They changed my life.....Easily my Favorite 70's into 80's Band
Imagine seeing both Slade and BOC on the same bill - I survived such an onslaught at the Palladium in NYC 1974. Slade were SO LOUD they nearly brought the building down! Chunks of plaster falling in the basement mens room-they shook the very foundation! So loud we very nearly couldn't stand it. One of the best shows I've ever seen.
I can't believe this only got to 86. I don't remember much from that time frame due to reasons beyond my control. But this song has stuck with me through all that

This is Slade Nodd Jim Dave and Don the best British rock band to come from the black country and out of England end of. Awsome band live and the biggest UK selling band of the 1970s yet all you hear is of Bowie etc who Slade out sold and all those around them. So underrated and overlooked it makes me mad. My all time band forever.
when disco came along the radio stations stopped playin rock and roll and started playin all that wimpy stuff. If you coodn't dance ta it, they woodn't play it
I almost forgot about this gem until a recent FB post mentioned it; this is an awesome rock tune with a great Cheap Trick vibe. Yes, I know Cheap Trick were influenced by Slade...
Why dont they get the reconition they deserve..a great rock band ..who had many no 1s through the 70s & 80s world wide ..apart from the usa which was a little indifferent success ..
Sweet! It's been 20 plus years since I heard this. Why this wasn't a humongous hit back then I'll never know... these guys were awsome in the 70's & still managed to get songs like these out in the 80's, Incredible. Totaly underated just like Blue Oyster Cult.
@decimated550 That's exactly what it is - fun. All rock tunes were fun back in the day. I remember those Slade videos from the 80's. Noddy Holder always looked like he was having a blast. Good singer, too. This song doesn't sound old to me. Wish someone was still writing and performing stuff like this, but I guess times have changed.
Back in Slades day you couldnt even get decent gigs unless you had your music high on the charts in the U.K. Today though if Slade were around they could still play the arenas like a lot of rock acts whose albums sell on the strength of their gigs and not the other way round. Its saddening really when you think about how really hard these guys had to work to get a hip sound each time only to have some modern critic slam them for their change of direction being the blame for their sad demise
If you check out A Day In The Life album by The Dummies aka. Jim Lea you will find this on there and it was out in 1981, a year before Ed did the synth part of Jump, total brill track by the 1 and only SLADE
@atomicpunk48 - you can't deny it's the warm synthesizers. But the riff, the story, the very unique and high-production value video, everyone's having fun in it. For all those reasons - works for me at least.
+colemann76 Got decent airplay on MTV in 85 but rock radio in the US didn't really give it a chance. Prolly because of the plethora of American acts and the twisted sense of patriotism in the US at the time
+dadadruma I know I'm in the minority but I actually think it's one of the best songs of the whole 80s. If you listen to it carefully it's an almost flawless composition
I totally agree I wish they would of stuck with this formula their fortunes with the american market may of turned their way, I didnt get the arrogance of American labels and still dont to this day last night i watched the tonight show and the musical guest was the grammy award winner for best new artist and within five seconds i wanted to yack. Artist? LMFAO!
You would have had to be there to appreciate this music. 80's was a wild ride, everyone had a different look and it did not matter! Some wore leather pants with zippers like Micheal Jackson, or Duran Duran makeup, or Madonna lace. Slade was the look of being yourself and having fun! Very unappreciated band. Plus they're Scots, Thenk ye uncoly!
Their DVD, "The Very Best of Slade" was a HUGE missed opportunity for all these promo clips to be FINALLY collected together..... maybe in another 15 years or so? :(
great.song good job ozzy pulled out of reading in 1980 and the promoters picked slade to replace him there records dried up they couldn't sell the big venues they went down so well it resurrected there carreer until the classic line up.split
This album is from a period in the 80's when many bands used synth-guitars. Just to mention - Judas Priest - Ram it down and Turbo, Iron Maiden - Somewhere in time and even VH had their "jump". I never got that "rogues gallery" because it did not excatly sound real Slade.
I love the glossier material that Slade created for the American market, more than many of the earlier British tracks. It's a pity that Noddy Holder disagreed with me and left the band, because it spelt the end of their most creative phase (in my view).
Jim Lea is clearly under rated :P Take your time and read the wikipedia info about him. Clearly the one creating the hit singles, ofc together whit Noddy.
Love Slade and love this song but,,, Eddie had the synth part of JUMP written in 82. There is a good interview with a guitar mag writer here on the Tube where Ed plays it for him. It was right after the Diver Down release and tour. I doubt there was any intention of copying anything. There are more than a handful of songs from various artists that sound like others. This is for sure my fav Slade tune. I like it more than Jump.
@slant40 Hi Slant. Any more memories of that night. As a Slade fan since 71 i'd like to hear about those gigs and the early American tours. What songs did they play? Were Noddy's encouragements to get up and have a good time appreciated? Did you meet them? Any pictures etc. Let us know. Regards Bigmagic.
@peaceman1234567 This is not original, but most of 80 s Slade is phenomenal and proves that they were master craftsmen in studio also, continuously evolving.
@Alexanderzzzzon A bit yes..Slade lifted some of the great van Halen tune... anyway, I think van Halen have to thank Slade more in general than the other way around. I like "Jump" better than this, but Hey Ho Wish You well is the least song from Slade s Rogues Gallery. Thx, I had not thought of the "resemblance" with the van Halen song.
No idea why but Van Halen's Jump never appealed to me but this song was an instant hit. Definately influenced from the Van Halen keyboard sound but this great song still stands as a strong song on it's own. Some mature lyrics, brilliantly infectious tune and some excellent vocal. Via my wikipedia work for Slade, I discovered that Germany never took to the single but in America the single peaked at #86 on the singles chart and #13 on the rock chart. In Canada, the single peaked at #60.
@Alexanderzzzzon Yes, Slade lifted some of van Halen s "Jump". However, I think van Halen need to be grateful to Slade more than the other away around. Liitel Sheila is the least of Slade s eighties songs, I like "Jump" better. Thanks for your input, I hadn t thought about the "resemblance" with the great van Halen tune...
When first I saw this band on "Twiggy's Juke box" here in 1972 So Cal, I actually became OBSESSED with their Great songs and Image.....Not a lie to say They changed my life.....Easily my Favorite 70's into 80's Band
Gracias Dios mío despues de décadas por fin encuentro esta canción de Slade.
Rogues Gallery... What a goddamn MASTERPIECE!!!!!!!!
Slade is just purely fun a little Slade music a day will make your life a little happier
Amen!
I have been looking for this song for way too long! It was one of my favs back in the 80s. So glad I found it.
Одна из Любимых групп. Мне 61 с молоду слушаю их.
Oh my first Band in the 1970 .. what kind of voice - wonderful
I also heard this , and I 'm sure it's true ! NODDY 's VOICE made the walls came down !
I heard that
Diamond of rock!
I can't believe this only got to 86.
I don't remember much from that time frame due to reasons beyond my control. But this song has stuck with me through all that
Slade is an awesome band.
just a really great tune!!!...gotta be one of the most underrated songs of all time!!!

David Jackson Agree with everything you say. They had so many songs after 1975 that should have been hits it's ridiculous
You tell 'em David
I'm with you 100%
💖🎩
when disco came along the radio stations stopped playin rock and roll and started playin all that wimpy stuff. If you coodn't dance ta it, they woodn't play it
Agree the best and always will be nothing can compete
Very underrated indeed.
I almost forgot about this gem until a recent FB post mentioned it; this is an awesome rock tune with a great Cheap Trick vibe. Yes, I know Cheap Trick were influenced by Slade...
I hear Jump by Van Halen more
Why dont they get the reconition they deserve..a great rock band ..who had many no 1s through the 70s & 80s world wide ..apart from the usa which was a little indifferent success ..
i love noddy's voice....he seems to be very under-rated when talking about great vocalist, almost never mentioned and he should be!!
Sweet! It's been 20 plus years since I heard this. Why this wasn't a humongous hit back then I'll never know... these guys were awsome in the 70's & still managed to get songs like these out in the 80's, Incredible. Totaly underated just like Blue Oyster Cult.
Way ahead of their time... Awesome band!!!
Brilliant! This is my favourite from Rogues Gallery.
Crickey! It's been over 20 years since I last heard this song... what memories and what a great tune. Thanks for posting!
One of my first records, used to listen it 30 times in a row every day....
Pozdrav iz Beograda
I always liked this song from the first time I heard it. I don't understand why it didn't go higher on the chart.
@decimated550 That's exactly what it is - fun. All rock tunes were fun back in the day. I remember those Slade videos from the 80's. Noddy Holder always looked like he was having a blast. I’ve commented previously so won’t go into details about how I feel about this song but I can’t believe this was left off their new best of CD.
I’ve been looking for this song forever. Only heard it a few times back in the day. Thanks for posting it!
the best for me from à long long Time. Please never stop let us dream.. From a french
This is great! How did I miss this back in the day? Never saw this video. Slade is definitely an underrated band

Classic Slade u wouldn't of thought they had a spell in glam rock
@atomicpunk48 - you can't deny it's the warm synthesizers. But the riff, the story, the very unique and high-production value video, everyone's having fun in it. For all those reasons - works for me at least.
Should have been a hit
+colemann76 Got decent airplay on MTV in 85 but rock radio in the US didn't really give it a chance. Prolly because of the plethora of American acts and the twisted sense of patriotism in the US at the time
+dadadruma Its just a fantastic song by an underrated band
Agreed!!
+dadadruma I know I'm in the minority but I actually think it's one of the best songs of the whole 80s. If you listen to it carefully it's an almost flawless composition

Just like so many of their other songs
I remember watching this on a music show called Radio 1990. Wow. That was 30 years ago. What happened!?
Time has gone, passed us by. There's no time to sit andwonderin' why. Jim Lea - Valley of the Kings
@carlphone Agreed Carlphone.
Long live The Mighty Slade!!
You would have had to be there to appreciate this music. 80's was a wild ride, everyone had a different look and it did not matter! They`re English not Scottish.
@xdwing Yes and van Halen sold twice as many records. It s a shame becoz Slade had the most tunes and best songs of them all
Their DVD, "The Very Best of Slade" was a HUGE missed opportunity for all these promo clips to be FINALLY collected together..... maybe in another 15 years or so? :(
#373 on "The WTCS Top 400 Songs Of All Time"...
music génial fantastic.
great.song good job ozzy pulled out of reading in 1980 and the promoters picked slade to replace him there records dried up they couldn't sell the big venues they went down so well it resurrected there carreer until the classic line up.split
They are a good band, after all so many other bands have taken and redone their music. The one band that did a lot of remakes was Quiet Riot.
Regardless who was first Slade or Van Halen this is a good song never heard it before now
Larry Karr Van Halen but still think this should be just as well known
Van happens jump. Recorded 1980s. Little shiela recorded during rtb sessions.
Eh wrong. This was written first.
@teddingtontcu
SLADE ARE ETERNAL
💖🤘
I wish I could find the disc. I recorded this video years ago and this is the first time I've seen it since the mid 80's
@Hotgarbage100 YUP! From Rogues Gallery. BRILLIANT album. One of the best bands ever
and Noddy don't look lost without his guitar as in the hey ho... video!!
This album is from a period in the 80's when many bands used synth-guitars. Just to mention - Judas Priest - Ram it down and Turbo, Iron Maiden - Somewhere in time and even VH had their "jump". I never got that "rogues gallery" because it did not excatly sound real Slade.

Martin Kyle This is a classic in my opinion and I can’t work out why it wasn’t a hit
Jim Lea is clearly under rated :P Take your time and read the wikipedia info about him. Clearly the one creating the hit singles, ofc together whit Noddy.

Yes but this song predates Jump. So???? Once again Slade ripped off
@Alexanderzzzzon Yes, Slade lifted some of van Halen s "Jump". However, I think van Halen need to be grateful to Slade more than the other away around. Listen to an Italian band called Giuda.
Actually this was written by Jimmy Lea and released independent of Slade before VH
This song should have been a bigger hit stateside but thanks to quiet riot they did get their due in America finally with run run away and my oh my.
