I would often use Music Annex in Menlo Park CA in the 1980s. There would be lots of pretty famous rockers there at night. They would be walking the halls to get to the coffee maker. I happen to walk into Studio A where Ronnie Montrose was producing a band. No one was there yet, but what I saw was unbelievable. Ronnie Montrose's rack of gear was sitting next to the NEVE console. The entire front panel was spray painted black. I guess so that no one could see the settings. Crazy man.
Warm vintage 80s tones that inspire you to pick up the guitar and play ! My rack is on progress : Furman PL8CE, Rocktron Piranha, Rocktron Pro-Q, Rocktron Hush Ultra, Rocktron Intellifex Blackface, Mesa Boogie 50/50, I'm debating whether or not to add a Rocktron Intellipitch ! I had a rack in the 90's and when I brought that thing out, sound men just drueled over the sound of it. It went as follows: a Fender Blues deluxe reverb into a THD hotplate with speaker thru to a Rane sm26 mixer into a Rocktron intellifex set on a duck delay. The power amp was a Mesa Boogie 50/50 in to 2- Peavey tweed classic 50 4x10 cabinets. So you had a 1x12 dry from the fender and stereo left and right from the cabs. My pedalboard shelf featured the tc chorus/flanger.
Man those SDE-3000. Have been trying to look for one for a while now. Found 2000 which is more primitive and dirtier, but really cool anyway. I feel like in a rack like this the SPX90 kinda requires the dry line when the signal has to run through other effects after, it has such a strong low pass effect that accumulates. Also nice Dominance & Submission, great song!
Is this all midi controlled with that voodoo labs GCX? Also what mixer is that on top? Is the mixer stereo capable? And did you put the compressor (dbx 160a) on speaker out from amp before the stereo wet or basically before your line out box for wet dry wet?

Right now it’s doing power amp, cab and mic sim before the signal goes to the M120 line mixer. Then I’m going L and R out of the mixer into a pair of studio monitors

@@ian1eh944 my signal flow is guitar > Couple pedals > Preamp > Compressor > Torpedo > single mono channel on line mixer. Then the aux sends from the line mixer feed the effects running 100% wet which go into channels assigned to be left and right from the stereo outs of the effects. All of that is set up to be switchable by routing it through the VOODOO LAB GCX midi controlled loop switcher. It kinda simulates a wet dry wet effects as it would be interpreted by front of house with the dry signal in the center of the stereo field and the wet signal panned hard left and right.

Just wanted to give you a big thumbs up for all your videos. Great player! I’m currently acquiring some vintage rack gear but not sure where to begin on the set up. I plan on using a similar set up as you have in this code. I want to use two sde3000, a spx90, an Ibanez sdr1000. I have a Samson sm10 and two rane sm26’s. Would appreciate if anyone could give me some input on how to connect this in a wet dry wet rig. I have a fryette 2502 on the way and have several tube head options for the dry cab. I also have a Suhr iso line out box to facilitate getting a line out signal from the center amps speaker. Any advice on setting this up Clifton?

The Helix, being the marvel of technology and imagination that it is, has many relevant advantages over this set up. That being said, the tube preamp has an organic bloom, tactile interaction and depth that isn’t quite in a modeler yet. I’m not using it much right now, since I’m mostly just playing a tele into a 4x10 bassman but I plan on putting together a cool rack rig again soon.

The D1500s are great! I have a pair of them. If you’re just starting out, I recommend getting a multi-effect with a really good/easy interface like a Yamaha SPX or even something like a Zoom 9120 just to give you an idea of what you like/dislike before going down the rabbit’s hole. As for preamps...I’ve only owned this one and the Boss GL-100. I like the Mesa if you can find one under $500

Does the dbx make a significant difference ? Detune 3 ways ? Does the spx allow you to do 3 way split internaly? Do you run compressor after amp on overdrive sounds ? Where are u running overdrives after compressor ? Many thanks 🙏🏻

I like using the comp on clean sounds to squish the harsher peaks down and even out the sound. I posted a telecaster video with this rack where you can really hear it in action.
That’s how I’ve been using it and I like it a lot! Of course you can also use it as a way to interface your vintage Marshall or anything else without a preamp-out or effects-loop with your rack and then go out of the speaker out to your dry cab. Lots of ways to use it. But yes, the power amp simulator in it sounds great and I often just use Powered full range speakers from the line mixer where the signal from the torpedo gets blended with effects
I have a couple voodoo labs ground control units that I use to send program change messages to cycle through presets I’ve built using a combination of bypassing and preamp channel switching routed through the voodoo lab GCX Bypass looper and various sounds I’ve dialed in on the different effects units for specific tones
yeah ok, so 1 is used for presets and the other has that upgrade chip and is set to instant access mode? ... so i thought you can only control 8 midi devices eith the GCPRO?
@@officialpoa3171 I only use one ground control and I usually don’t have more than 3 or 4 midi controllable units in whatever rack I have set up. Most of the programming and midi patch assigning is done in the effects units themselves. I pretty much only use basic PC but will occasionally wire in an expression pedal for something like reverb feedback or Leslie speed
@@cliftonwright7081 i'm putting a rack together haven't bought a switcher yet. looking at the RJM effect gizmo (the big rack one) which is stereo and the gcx which is an older unit but i think mono (some say there is a stereo mod for it) i have to work all this out not sure what switcher i need
@@geezberry8889 the rjm is a better/more versatile unit overall but the GCX can be stereo, you just have to pair two of the loops together. It all depends on if you’re looping stuff that’s going to a parallel mixer or stuff that’s in series with your preamp. To do stereo on a GCX you just use two loops and set up the midi to turn them on or off at the same time
This setup was a bit of an experiment at the time to run as much stuff as possible lol. I was splitting both aux sends from the mixer with y cables to different loops on the GCX, one of which split with another y cable to the dual sde3000s which aren’t heard in this video. Since then, I have dedicated splitters and a proper line level balanced mixer

It’s a regular old Mesa Boogie Studio Preamp (it’s actual name). Same one Petrucci and Cobain used back in the early 90s.

An all-in-one unit is about as simple as it gets in terms of I/O, logistics etc. though the programming for patches can be pretty involved

how do you run stereo with the gcx isnt that a mono switcher?
Most of my effects are mono in stereo out so I just feed a dry split through one of the switches to the effect

What power amp do you use for the Mark series preamp?
Right now I use a two notes torpedo live between the preamp and the parallel mixer to do power amp and cab IRs.
I call that a good alternative to cabs, so neighbors don’t get mad.
