The Big 4 Japanese Boss Compressors
Today we explore the squish of yesteryear. 80s and 90's country were Peanut Butter to Japanese pedal jelly. These are the 4 Made in Japan squish boxes offered by Boss in the late 70's until about 1990. Base tone is provided by a Mesa Boogie Studio Preamp running into a Two Notes Torpedo into my interface.

Here's a gloriously useful overdrive from the awesome people over at Karma Amplification. It combines nicely tweaked versions of the two most popular circuits in studios today and throws in a great clean boost and some cool parallel blading and stacking options. Really well built and perfect for working musicians in modern country, pop and just about everything else.

Today I’ve put together some chops work arounds for those of us who don’t have the pick chops like we did in our early days because of years of having to make a living playing the world’s most popular guitar music: KUNTRY.

Whelp. Pretty much all these things need work at this point. But this one at least sounds pretty good and the neck shape is cool. The weight is right where I like it and it looks like the wood paneling in a house built in the 50s/60s which is also cool. Going to be a nice funky beater to gig with.

Haven’t busted this one out in a long time. Plugged it straight into my Burman 501 combo. A really interesting amp that time forgot. All of the huge British guitarists of the late 70s/early 80s had one at least briefly. Kind of like a more detailed and twangy sounding Mesa Mark 1 with a powerful active EQ that lets you take it into fender and Vox territory. The Burny RFV-75 is just badass. Thes...

A great vid! Thanks for stepping through the functions.
It’s been a while… thanks for sharing Clifton & Merry Christmas to You & Yours 🎄😎🙏✌️❤️
@@RickMichaelis63 merry Christmas amigo!
They pretty much are presented from most attack to least. “Best” depends on the application, but I like the 2 or 3. Superb demo.
Thanks man!
CS-2 was the best, followed by CS-1. The CS-3 was least musical of the bunch.
@@bleepblabloop it goes hard in the paint with the squish
Wow man! Just found out about you. Greg just shared this on his FB. 🔥 thank you, subbed
@@joeriffanucci dope! Thanks man, I appreciate that!
@ right on. Looking forward to checking out your stuff. Hope you have a great Christmas

Great job, Cliff - thank you!
0:49 - Dog: "pretty good lick that one. Let me know when you play a Yuletide song, I wanna listen!"
@@EgoShredder thank you! Also chronological which I guess shows the trend in what people wanted
CS-2 was my favorite. Your playing is off the charts cool.
@@Billywagner22 thanks man! It’s my favorite too.
@@cliftonwright7081 Merry Christmas!
My favourite one as well, just had a bit more bite and tone.
Great demo, thanks. This is how I rank the compressors: 1. LM-2 notes individuate best & it's most transparent. 2. CS-2 cuts through great, for having too dark of a sound. 3. CS-1 probably has the best tone 4. CS-3 sounds great but kind of adds a weird spongy thing to the sound.
@@BaroqueBlues haha yeah, I feel that. The LM2 cuts tons of volume from your signal if you set it to compress, it’s best used if you play funk, already like the feel of your amp tone but just need to lop off the spikes at the peaks of your strums or plucks.
@@cliftonwright7081 You probably know better than me, you were using them & you play guitar better than me lol. Which one do you use on your pedal board?
Fun stuff😀 were those the actual settings on the pedal pictures?
@@jonatanbergmusician thank you, they sure are!
What's Drive tone
Congratulations really, I use those sounds always nowadays… dreaming a set like yours ! 👍🏼🔥
Looking and sounding great. Have you lost weight and sharpened up? You look better. Oh and tremelo picked sick lick at around 17:16 ! Nice!
@@EgoShredder haha thanks man, lost 45 pounds!
Stupendous as usual. Your picking hand assumes a rather unique position when you go into shred mode-clearly it works. How are you holding the pick?
Haha yeah it’s the way I first held a pick as a kid and I sort of recently reverted back to it because it sounds weirder lol. I’m holding it with my thumb and index and middle like Italian hand gestures lol
You playing through that gorgeous rack is awe inspiring.
@@fross1203 thanks man!

Amazing demo and playing.

Wowww - Great man ;-)
Thanks Clifton for a quality demo. It helps that you have some good chops and a humble personality.
This is a dope presentation- love ur vibe too lol Makes me wanna buy this thing
@@gibm1806 thank you! It’s always a surprise when people like this thing more than old Lexicons for guitar
Well...fortunately I don't think I will ever have to worry about playing those forbidden chicken pickin licks!! My job playing Sweet Home Alabama and Sweet Child of Mine is secure!
Nice work! I hooked mine up and began using mine recently for the first time in ages. I started to forget some of the things I used to know about it! Owners manual not as helpful as I'd hope it would be. I like how your playing immediately adapts to the effects present at the time. That's not something every guitar player has, based on my experience anyway.
@@GrantSchinto thanks! It’s a cool unit, I sold mine to a friend so it would stay around
I’ve been hunting for a good rack distortion for a long while now. I was leaning hard toward a Peavey Rockmaster but I don’t play enough to justify the price. I came across one of these and came to YT and watched your demo…this may be the winner! I’m a huge fan of the MT2, but I also like the light OD sounds you were getting. I’m not a “it has to be tube” snob, so this checks all the boxes. Great demo btw, super helpful!
@@gumbomudderx7503 thank you! Glad you found this helpful

How can you be loud there in japan? Don't you have close neighbors??
@@TheArtofBlues I live in Germany now and this is in a treated rehearsal space, so I can be crazy loud again! It’s great
Thank you for illustrating your playing skills and the way you utilise the Echo Park. It's like a stripped down version of my DL4. This pedal is so bloody heavy, if someone jumped up on stage and I threw this pedal at them it would be could night Australia. Yes I like the tap tempo but I sometimes get a little to heavy with my foot and switch it off. The trails option is great and the analog digital and tape and what the MOD dial does with those algorithms.
Good playing. Glad to see a demo that a meral mess
Dang! You're a great player!

@@tetramusicstudio haha thanks man!
I think the Korg sounded way better on guitar than the Lexicon. The last Korg setting you had was amazing. Not sure if the Lexicon was a one-for-one setting but that last Korg sound was sick. Also, your playing is awesome.
@@cgarts1 thanks man! And I think you’re right, especially outside of a mix, the tone of the Korg just vibes with guitar more like a spring tank or something.
aww mf you can play!
How would the gx do on synths? I got an sx and its nice. Could you use the reverb on the gx only to sort of have two sx700?
