Looks a ton better. Thanks for the tips! One suggestion for the plastic removal. Bend and old butter nice tip at a 90 degree angle near the tip and you can just slide it along and pull out gently without putting any pressure on your roof. Thanks!
I have a 4runner in nautical blue which is waaay darker than I expected. Also matched color door handles and a minimum of silver trim. The most prominent may be the wheels alone. Almost looked black when I picked it up at the dealer during dusk. So I'm doing whatever I can to brighten it up with accents including clear anodized running boards, etc.. Different strokes for different folks. Agree on the thin gauge sheet metal gripe as well. I'd hazard a sizable tree acorn dropped from a fair distance above as I was driving last week and left a slightly perceptible dent in the roof if you know where to look. Dammit only 4 months old but the alternative is to keep it parked in a garage like a museum piece..
Don't know why I havent done this yet. Didn't know it was that easy to remove also. Thanks for the video man!
The warning for prying plastic molding makes this video invaluable thank you✌
I was planning on doing this, and inquired on one of 4Runner lifestyles videos and they happened to have a set of stock black rails in their warehouse and are sending them to me for just the price of shipping! Awesome guys over there!
Looks good. I went ahead and had my bars powder coated from a local shop real cheap.
Love how you were straight to the point then added tips and thoughts after subbed
Thank you!!
Plasti dip rules. I don’t know why everyone hates on it so much. Nice job.
If applied properly it’s the best!
Nice man. I just bought the same TRD wheels and I already changed my valence but the silver bars still stick out like a sore thumb. Now I know it'll look great once I paint them! Gracias!
Thank you so much for having this channel just for 4Runner stuff. Me and my wife just bought a 14 sr5 white and I do plasti dip on the side. I’m glad u did it first Bc that was going to be my next project and I didn’t want to try and tape around them. All your videos are great and I’m super excited to start upgrading our 4Runner. Keep up the great work and looking forward to more great videos.
Thank you very much and congratulations on your new 4runner!
I completely agree with you on Toyota’s paint. I had a 97 4Runner that I ran pretty hard for 10 years. Not too much damage in that time. My 1 year old 4Runner already has about 6 nicks that go to metal. 1 damn year! It’s as if they downgraded their paint.
Oh 100%%%%
My 95 4Runner was so good with the paint. EVERYTHING buffed out with a simple wax.
Really well done 🙏 Striaght to the point with some helpful tips. I didn't have a plastic pry bar so I used the metal one that came with the tire kit in the back 👍 Worked just as fine with a little extra caution
Thank you glad it helped!!
Jon,
I realize this is from January but if that little blemish bothers you, find a Pdr, paintless dent repair guy and he can get that out pretty cheap. I do Pdr myself so I know it can be done. Good job
Thanks! I got a guy but just haven't been able to line something up. I appreciate it!!
If you use a metal flat trim knife, for carpentry, and a towel, it won't dent.
Speaking of dents, does anyone know how to remove rear drivers interior panel, I have a dent by my fuel door. I need to push out.
looking good!! I'm going to have to paint my entire rack. I bought the SR5 so my entire rack is silver.
Ohhhh yes the caps too
This was just what I needed to see! Thank you! Great video!
Glad it helped
Great video Jon, I watched it and gave you a like even though I already removed and powder coated my roof rails. Love seeing the mods going on your truck!
Thank you for always watching!!!
2:22 so true my 2014 sr5 has just a few bumbs in it from the smallest things happening
@ Blue TRD Jon When you remounted the rails, did you feel the need to add anything like LocTite, silicon for waterproofing, etc? My concern is that when removing the screws/rails, some adhesive will come off with it, and then get water leaked in after remounted. What are your thoughts please? Thanks! 👍
I thought of it after the fact ya. I'd put a little bit of silicone in it
@@TRDJon Thanks again! Oh wait... "a little bit of silicon IN...", or AROUND it? "It" being the white looking nipple the screws bolt into?
I’d just do a little where the screws go into
TRD JON like a circle ring going around the base under the rubber washer?
The sexiest color for a 4runner for sure. My favorite! Calvary blue?
You have awesome 4runner content! Greatly appreciate the time you spend in making a world a better place!
I appreciate that!
I flipped my kayak over and that was all it took to dent the top 😐
Take your caps in for powder coating.
I'm putting on a rhino rack. I can't wait!!!
How to you take just the black thing off that the bolts were attached too
You should tint the chrome part of the taillight.
I’ll probably do it when I go back and get my windshield tinted. Since it isn’t my blinker anymore
Blue TRD Jon did you get a dash cam yet? 🤔
😔
Mine came tinted from the dealer ... the taillights I mean ... it’s soooo sick man ... DO IT!
Funny enough ... the rails are on my agenda ... dealer did a GREAT job blacking out the accents ... but didn’t do the rails ... 🤦🏻♂️
‘Coming soon’ though ... if I don’t just put an after market rail system on ... the prinsu has def got my attention ...
Nice work
The prinsu even has a no drill option too!
Looks good. Also looked easy to do.
Very easy. Just watch your cars paint for sure.
I agree it does look a lot better 👌
Night and day difference
There is method without risking denting the roof. There is a break in the rear of plastic caps, stick a small pry tool and then using another pry tool to lift it up. This way you won’t be making any contact with the roof at all and risk denting. On the Gobi roof rack installation directions, it tells you to do this or you risk damaging the roof.
Thanks!
Ok I am going totally doing that just for that Black look. I agree Toyota should have done that with the 4Runners.
The back looks sooooo much better
Yep, the chrome rails suck. I did a carbon fiber wrap but not on the end (black) caps
I just bought plasti dip yesterday to do the same thing.
Hahaha heck ya!!! 6 coats 👍🏼👍🏼
Little over kill but I want it to last
Hey Jon,
The black looks way better. Thanks for the tip. Quick question, what size tires are you running on your wheels?
I’m about to do the exact same thing with mine
Heck yes!
Thanks for the video. Friend of mine's broke and I need to replace them. I was afraid screws are beneath the headliner but it's not. GG
Is it possible to cut down the rails and reattach the mounting ends? I would love to modify one of these to put on my camper shell. They are just too long.
Yes but mount point are probably different
Hey Jon, how is the plasti dip holding up after 5 years? And how long did you wait to bolt them back on after dipping?
Still good. I’ve put a different rack on since though.
Thanks for the help Jon. Do you think I can do the caps the same way, my caps are silver like the rails on my SR5? Thanks again!
Yep! You definitely can
Question: When you get the rails off, do the front and rear end supports (where the bolts are) just slide out of the rails? I was thinking of just buying the OEM black roof rails, but am assuming I can keep the old end supports the rails attach to. Your video didn't show how to remove the end supports under the end caps, so I'm not sure if I can keep them or if I need to buy new ones with the new roof rails. Thanks for making this video.
Yes you can. There is just some bolts holding it together.
Recently I’ve had to remove my headliner to take the rails off? Is that not necessary?
Not at all
Hi, that looks beautiful how long with the Plasty dip last? I was thinking just to remove them completely But I don’t know if that will look nice or not what’s your opinion thank you again for the video I enjoyed it have a good one
Have you seen the new Jeep JL Unlimited rubicon? Hopefully the 2020 4Runner beats it
I have. It’s a HUGE step forward for Jeep.
How many coats did you use? And how long did you wait between coats?
Till it was dry to the touch. I wanna say 4 or so
Would a PDR tech be able to get those dents out? Is there access to the back of that panel through the roof rack attachments point?
Yes they would 👍🏼👍🏼
Where did you get the plastic removal/pry tools from? And was there any special prep prior to applying the plasti dip?
Just from amazon. And prep is just making sure its clean and no wax on it.
Where's the link for those plastic pry bars ?
Harbor Freight carries them. Thats where I found mine.
PS I used a small brad puller and it is so slender that the head stayed on the rubber gasket and it did not dimple the roof.
Doing mine tomorrow. Thanks!
Can you swap the gray roof rails out with black ones? If I were to purchase just the side rails in black
Yes
You should have put a long flat 1x2 (wrapped in a towel) under it. It would have distributed the force from prying across a large area and not dented the roof.
That would have helped
Can you drop a link for the wedge tools? Thanks Jon!
amzn.to/2OgXzMe
Hey Jon do you know how much the stock rails can hold max weight load, I plan on running an rtt 4 person tent with some upgraded cross bars any recommendation would be appreciated
any tips for getting the caps back underneath the gasket when putting them back on? I got them on, but they just sit on top of the gasket. I don't want to mess with it too much trying to get it to fit back the way it should
I’d pop it off and try again if I’m thinking of the thing your talking about. It’s very snug on it to try and not do it
Looking clean! Did you also go over the plastic caps with plasti-dip? I don’t think I saw any tape or anything covering them
Nope. They where just off and yea a little over spray on the plastic but it’s covered by the plastic caps
Is there anything that can be done to fix the small indentations? Heat maybe? I also had a couple occur when doing my rails.
Paint less dent repair would be the best
Did you sand the bars before plasti dip? If I were to plasti dip the end caps, would you recommend sanding those before?
No I would not
Great vid. Did you apply the plasti dip on the inside track where the cross bars slide? Or did you tape that part off? Thanks!
Some over spray made its way in.
I understand having to take stock stuff off... but it always sort of makes me 'sad' to have to. Wish, wish, wish car manufacturers made cars more ala carte with 3rd party options that made sense and didn't have a $$$$$$$ markup.
Agreed. And their huge markups to get what we want makes up go to the 3rd party option
Hey Jon in looking for black covers for our center of roof rack ours are shining aluminum does anyone make these for the outside?
You can order black ones from Toyota maybe? Idk the part number
Hey Jon. Questions for you. How is the Plasti Dip holding up? I'm torn between that method and vinyl wrap. I'm in CO at high altitude and cold weather and want to choose the method that will hold up best. Also you mentioned you can remove the plasti dip? I didnt think that would be able to be removed back to OEM quality silver. Thanks!
Id did very well! Still on it. They are in my garage now though.
What did you use to seal it after reinstalled?
Nothing. Jusybthe same gaskets that came with it
I just swapped my TRD Pro rack for some stock black rails. Which end goes where?? Is the bigger end toward the front??
I think they say L and R
Is that a specific color or brand of plastidip and how did it match the end caps. I have a 2016 Trail and am looking to do the same but want to know exactly what to buy. Thank you very much for all your videos. Much appreciated.
Just regular black plasti dip and the end caps I just left the stock black plastic
Did you apply the plastidip glossifier?
I did one pass of it but started to get to shiny
Hi Jon, what roof rack is on your 4runner? Looks low profile which is what I am looking for. Thanks for the help.
LFD off roading
How many cans were used? How many layers?
Not even one can. I did 5 layers or so. The inside of the rails though wasn't really covered the best
I know this video is old, but I’m about to do this. Wondering if there is any need to add some silicone into the holes for the bolts or not??
if you keep them off or put something else on then yes.
I’m just doing what you did, so sounds like I’m good without silicone
Should be good. 👍🏼👍🏼
thanks for the vid!!
No problem!
How well has the plastidip held up since you’ve done it? Considering doing it to my 2020. Many thanks!
Awesome!
Did you have to put silicone sealant when u put it back?
not the stock rails
TRD JON okay thank you 🤙
Great video! What kind of % tint do you have?
5% on all but the shield
great video! do you know what the carrying capacity is for the stock roof rack? I have a 2020 4runner SR5 and my brother wants to give me a roof tent that was given to him that he's not using. at this point I don't know the weight of the tent.
not sure of the rating, but people have run tents with it.
TRD JON thanks Jon much appreciated!
No worries!!
Does it hold up well when going through the car wash?
I don’t take mine through car washes. Help up to a power washer though.
What's the torque spec to re-install the roof rack?
Not sure..Just did it nice and snug
What tint do you have on that bad boy? Sorry for the loss on the dent..
5% lumar full ceramic.
I was thinking about powder coating my rails in a flat black. Has anyone done that?
Yes. Just expensive
Is your roof rack still in good shape now or did it get sun damage?
Still holding up greeat
Is tinted windows illegal in your area?
At a certain percentage they are.
@@TRDJon Lucky you, ours is 0 percent for driver/passenger side.
I was just going to buy a new black set... saved me $180...\
I got you!
Looks awesome! Question, how many coats of dip and how was it pulling off excess dip when part is not attached to the vehicle? Thanks for sharing.
Easy to pull off the more costs you have applied
DO NOT USE THAT AGGRESSIVE ANGLED HOOK PART OF THE REMOVAL TOOL..that doesnt even require much pressure for your to dent your roof...or you dohave to use more pressure put a small board over the miccrofiber cloth. #physics
Honestly I just used a flat head screw driver and a my finger under it and it popped off easily
How many cans of Plasti Dip did you use to cover the roof rack? And how many times to you paint each one?
One can. Used 6 coats. A little over kill but I like it to be thick.
@@TRDJon awesome thanks, definitely going this way. It makes a world of difference for the look. Just subscribed to your channel keep up the good work!
Thank you!!! And don’t do the whole rail at once. I found when it is laid down like that two sides of the rail at a time is good
It's a truck! Let it get beat up.
Self inflicted dents are annoying.
Do the covers pop right back in with no problem?
Yes with no issue
@@TRDJon Up here in the cold northern waste lands of Massachusetts we have to remove the snow from the vehicles roof. The Toyota roof racks hold the snow on and it's hard to get it off. I recently bought a roof rack delete kit so I could take it off till spring. Anyways, I want to say thanks for showing me how the end caps come off. By the way I used a small brad puller to remove them. You can find them at any big box store in where they sell carpenter tools. Anyways THANKS for the video on rack removal and all the others also.
Thanks!!! I appreciate that!
Try looking into the camera my dude.
Still workin on it. Thanks man!!
So you're really not painting it your plastic dipping it, painting is always better
Then paint yours
Can you leave the roof rack off
Yes. There are delete kits
