What we thought was going to be a simple service stop is turning into pure craziness! Ya know, we think it's one month...but in hindsight what the heck were we thinking?
Service, maintenance and boat work is a big part of owning a sailboat which is why we try to share a little glimpse into each of big items we're tackling this time around. We're hoping to get everything complete soon so we can set sail to Panama before the hurricane season comes in full force. Please keep your fingers crossed for us...we'll share more in the next service video and hopefully we'll be gone soon so we can continue the adventure.

Loving the nitty-gritty service videos, it's one thing to sail and it's another to know all the details and the maintenance involved. Super interesting to see it all and watch how the process goes. Can't wait for more!

Seriously, who are the 8 people who "thumbs down'ed" this video? I vote we make them work on your "head" and scrape Curiosity's bottom ("scraping Curiosity's bottom" - feels somehow inappropriate just typing that phrase!). .

Kudos on doing a lot of this work yourselves. There is no better way to learn about how your sailboat is put together than doing much of the work yourself. When you get further out afield you are going to have a tougher time finding qualified marine services and you will need to know as much as you possibly can to not just keep from getting ripped off, but to keep from getting dangerous "repairs" done which could literally put your lives in jeopardy.
    Good work guys. Bravo Zulu!

As usual, I am encouraged to press on and take one day at a time. Y'all are amazing! Cheers and best of luck with all the repairs.

Gotta love those "care" packages. Keeps life more interesting. Although the prices for the rigging seem like they would choke a horse when the payment comes due, at least the maintenance is good for another 10 - 15 years. When you look at it cost out for 10 - 15 years, the annual cost is easier to take. Especially if you aren't planning on owning this boat for more than 10 years.

Jason, Just a wayward comment or two:-
@ 13:55 you are installing a diaphragm pump. While they can be mounted anywhere, when mounting vertical, ALL the manufacturers recommend mounting with the pump head down to avoid water ingress to the motor if there is ever a leak. And having over 30 years experience with that type of pump, they WILL leak and you probably won't notice until the motor stops. Also have a couple of service kits on board for every model. Make sure the kit includes a Diaphragm, Valve block, wobble plate AND a shaft seal. A spare pressure switch is also good to have in the spare parts box.
Good effort showing all the little jobs that need attending to while doing a minor refit of systems. Looking forward to further adventures...maybe a Panama transit and off to the big water heading west???
    Cheers Brad

14:58 through 15:03 Looking at the coax cables you had vs what you get I am astunned if what you had is the original coax for your VHF antenna. If so, it really speaks of how little the OEM of the boat knows about the things they install.
The white original coax cable looks to be RG58, or should be. Since it is white it could even be RG59 which is regular 75 Ohm tv cable. It should be 50 Ohm as that is the Ohmnage of your radio and your antenna.
Now, if it is RG-58 cable it is a really really lossy cable for VHF, well really anything with longer runs above the HF (Shortwave bands) and even there one should be carefull of using it with longer runs unless you are down on say below 4MHz as it will not take so much power.
Now with 25 Watts only it is no problem to take the power.
I dont know how long run you have from the antenna, through the mast, into the boat, over and under and inside any cuboards and floorings but let us just imagine you have 30 meters or 100 feet of coax.......
The Marine VHF band is starting at 155MHz and goes up, the higher the frequency the more the loss in the cable.
A RG-58 has a loss of about 6.2 db at 150MHz and the higher you go - the more the loss.
So what is 6.2db equal to? Well, the db loss is logaritmic and in short one can say that 3db represents a halfation of power. This means transmitting 25W into the coax towards the antenna would give you only 12.5w that radiates from the antenna and that is if you have a good effective antenna (Marine VHF antennas are very broadbanded to cover all the channels and hence not very effective). On the receiving end the 3db loss would represent 1 unit on the S-meter or half the strenght or your reception - this could be the difference between hearing that Mayday of a neighbouring boat, or not at all.
Now, the RG-58 has a loss of 6.2 db at 150MHz on 100 feed / 30m which represents a loss of about 75%of your transmitted power - 25 Watts becomes 6,25 Watts only and your reception is equally as poor.
Now, your new cable could be a veriety of different cables but the most likely is that it is RG-213 as it looks very similar to it.
If this is RG-213 it has a loss at 150MHz of 2.8db on a 30m / 100 feet run. This means you will have a transmit power out of the antenna of about 13 Watts our of your 25 instead of 6,25. You will also hear opposite stations far better.
I know it is too late but if I were you I would had gone for something even better or even roof mount the antenna instead of mast mount it as the loss you get by the long run is sometimes worse than the height you get from having the not so effective marine broadbanded vertical in the mast top.
Another advice - try run the cable as short as possible, if you have an extra length over by the radio then dont wind it up in a coil but cut it and solder (always solder coax and other electrical connectors) a new connector. If you dont want to do that then have the extra lenght by the antenna and wind it up in a coil just befor the connector to the antenna - this would act as a RF-choke, a form of a balun which will help to prevent the power which is not effectivly transmitting from your antenna to walk back to your radio (Standing Waves). This is common on non-effective antennas which all broadband antennas are. And this reflected power can cause problem with your other electronic equipment and in worst case even damage them. Perhaps you have heard from folks who have problem watching TV when their neighbour has been using their CB or Ham-station? This is one problem that can cause just that.
Fair winds and thank you for giving us pleasure to watch another great episode.
    Cheers from SWEDEN

CLEO!!!!! Hello you cute shy kitty.
You guys have to plan for the unplanned FL rain. Buffer a few days JIC so the delay doesn't mess with your budget.

Ok I take back all the bad things I was saying about you guys for not posting a video sooner! LOL! Damn you guys have been busy! Fingers crossed you guys get out of there soon! Looking forward to the new adventures of Curiosity! 🤗🤗

This is going to be expensive. You will love the feathering props. I put them on my current cat and they give an extra 1-2 knots when sailing and the same thrust when reversing as going forward.

Kudos to your broker, Kent. Wow, all of that work looked very expensive. At least you guys are getting a lot of stuff done for your "around the world voyage". :) Do catamarans / sailboats have some type of "home owner's warranty" that covers the cost of the radar, etc.? Because, it seems like replacing just that one item would take up a lot of your maintenance budget. Anyways, I hope everything works out. You guys are awesome. Thanks for sharing your adventures.

I imagine that if you wanted to pay enough for the coverage you could get that, just like you'd pay a bunch more for homeowner's insurance if you wanted them to replace appliances that just fail due to old age. Probably cheaper to replace the item than to pay for the coverage.

Thanks for the reply. I was think more along the lines of, "Is the radar covered in any type of warranty when purchasing a boat?" Just wondering. Thanks.

Radar really isn't all that expensive these days in the greater scheme of things. It's mass-produced and today's high-tech electronics have really come down in price, even marine electronics.

    • @wilfdarr
      @wilfdarr 7 років тому +4

Paradigm2012Shift The electronics will come with a separate warranty, the spars with their own warranty, engines with their own warranty, etc. Yes there is warranty, sails…lines…etc but each one is specific to its own component, so in the end you have a binder full of warranties. The hull manufacturer knows how to install these things but not how to diagnose/repair/determine cause of failure, other than the hull obviously, so really it's of benefit to you to deal directly anyways.

Good job on upgrading the comms coax. However, Thicker coax does not equal better signals. It prevents the losses (assuming its the right coax).

Half way thru this G.R.E.A.T. video and I was hoping you had a plan to feed new line inside the mast for the new running rigging as usually, we leave the old stuff in, tie on the new stuff and pull it thru. But, hey, you knew all that I am sure and you have Kent around to make sure. Now to finish the video as we soooo enjoy your vlog. 😊💖👍👌⚓️

I love the look of underwater lights but couldn't bring myself to put ONE MORE HOLE in the boat. I have seen some that you can hang by their cord over the side. Love you guys.
BTW, we are on our way to Florida, starting a snailboat journey! In VA now. Hope to catch you one day!

You can use some brands of Navy Strength Gin for rocket fuel! (My Nephew who is a former Australian Naval Officer educated me.)
You can keep your Gin in the freezer because it will not freeze at standard domestic freezer temperatures.
I think it is delightful stuff with angostura bitters but, just barely, a drop large enough to make a very thin film on the interior of a glass fresh out of the freezer. (Hence Pink Gin)
Then add good quality Gin to preference, top with Tonic Water and a slice of lime mm-m.
I also like to make my ice cubes out of tonic water so they don't dilute the Jungle Juice if they melt should you (shudder) happen to take that long to drink it!

Love the new bottom color, blue is boring. My favorite is white though , it makes it so much easier to see any growth or build up on my little race boat! And I'm vain! Cheers Warren.
