- Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea
Season 2, Episode 24
The Menfish
First air date: March 6, 1966
Guest stars: Gary Merrill, John Dehner, Victor Lundin
While Nelson is away, Crane tries to prevent Dr. Borgman from implanting human DNA into marine animals to create a new type of undersea creature.
A couple of notes about this episode:
Richard Basehart did not appear in this episode due to illness. Gary Merrill, who was filming the pilot for The Time Tunnel, substituted for Basehart as Admiral Park.
Footage from this episode was also seen in the season three episode, "The Mermaid."
This beautiful HDTV broadcast recording of a restored and remastered film surpasses the commercially-released DVD set and any other syndicated or network broadcasts of Voyage.
Additional color and other video adjustments by TooleMan TV 2023.
Nelson gone for a day and all hell breaks loose on the Sea View.
Us oldies had the BEST tv ever. Witches, Gennies ,Lost in space or Voyaging to the bottom of the sea. Boldly going or singing along. Thanks for the flash back.
Yes I think these older programs are better
One of my favorite Voyage episodes as a kid. I pretended to be a manfish using my model of the Seaview... Rooooar!
lol that must have been fun
Yes, that was my dream too!
I actually had that Menfish toy that was in the aquarium.
David Hedison looks like a real military Captain of this Submarine. A part he was born for ❤.
Oooh...perfect for late night Saturday viewing here in the UK.
The picture quality is very impressive.
Thank you so much for this classic entertainment! 🙏
That underwater fight scene was EPIC !! That guy in full costume fighting while holding his breath …just awesome 😎
That store room takes a beating. I have only watched 4 of these and monsters have blown out the wall twice. Love the low budget monsters and sets.
I’ve always wondered if David Hedison knew the monster was going to erupt from that door or he was caught by surprise and forced to stay in character.
I enjoyed watching all the science fiction series from Irwin Allen . Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea ,Lost In Space ,Land Of The Giants , The Time Tunnel . Also disaster movies at the cinema like Earthquake, Towering Inferno, and Posideon Adventure
I'm not sure Allen had anything to do with Earthquake. But he did series in the 70s like swiss family Robinson and failed tv pilots like city beneath the sea
Or maybe that was a miniseries. It was alot harder to get imaginative series greenlight in the 70s
Gene Roddenberry had the same issues
Maybe because how expensive budgets had gotten
Very, very good quality thank you so much.classic audio, well done!
That’s great to hear!
Thank you for posting this episode. Looks great
If it wasn’t for David Hedison to be in the series, I wouldn’t have watched it from 1964 to 1968 and I would not about the DVD set years ago. Thank you for the upload you guys.
Same here my brother used to watch this but I wasn't much interested until I saw the Captain and it was 'Oh this looks good' I did however come to love the programme as well 😍
I love it. Slide rules still being used in 1980. Old-school tech!
Awesome Thanks So Much!!:)
Great show , thank you . Cheers
By now, they should know not to allow mad scientists onboard.
True enough! How Dehner's character got through the system calls for re examination!
Another favorite monster episode of mine. I like how the giant manfish was tossing around the Seaview. The only thing I didn't like was that Richard Basehart was not in this episode. I understand he started to fall ill during the episode "The Monster's Web" and was absent in the next two episodes which is this one and "The Mechanical Man".
That's what I have always heard, too. During "The Monster's Web," Nelson is "injured" and wears a bandage covering his face and head for the rest of the episode. You hear him speak from under the bandages a few times, but those lines were recorded in postproduction. I would have liked seeing Admiral Nelson in "The Menfish," but Gary Merrill was a fine substitute.
@@TooleManTV Yes I noticed that too and Gary did okay.
Thank you so much for sharing some awesome shows.
Thanks for uploading this fantastic episode, the quality is top notch as always. With fox/Disney at long last releaseing there shows and films on bluray I keep my hopes up for Voyage release.
Me too! 🤞🏻
The man fish sounds like a TIE fighter! LOL
I just wrote the same thing in the comments. I would not be surprised that the sound came from the same sound bank from the recording team.
edit: I just found out that it's from the same 20th Century Fox Studios sound library.
The scene when the Menfish busts through the bulkhead wall and grabs Capt Crane was freaking hilarious. The walls must have been made out of cardboard or something.
Excellent restorations. Think of the lousy color TVs at the time people watched it on. But there's more monsters of the week than X-Files and Kolchak the Night Stalker combined. Should be called "Seaview - The Monster Hunter".
They are so goofy that they are great! I hope that makes sense! lol 😂
Muchas gracias por compartir tan buen episodio de una serie inolvidable. David Hedison siempre será recordado como un gran actor y una bella persona.
Thanks Tooleman!
Fish & Chips will never be the same again
That Manfish figurine should have been merchandised. It looks like the creature from the black lagoon.
haha! the "evil" doctor was also the funny quirky boss on the "doris day show". also, what do you think the difference is between a "gillman" and a "manfish"? it actually appears to me that the man fish is more loving, since it hugged the seaview with such tender emotion.
The "evil" doctor is played by John Dehner, a wonderful character actor.
You can’t have just have a manfish without chips = manfish and chips = yum!
😛
Beautifully restored.
Thanks!
Sorry wrong comment for wrong movie. Meant for Mermaid episode. Still enjoyed this one.😊 46:08
The only semi-regular member of the _Seaview_ crew still alive today (Aug. 2024) is Alan Hunt, who played Crewman Riley.
Is it me, or did the man fish scream sound like the Imperial TIE fighter noise....around the 17:00 mark! Was Ben Burtt watching this episode? Brilliant show ...I grew up on this 💯👍👍👍
Ha! I just wrote a comment also about the TIE fighter sound, and then scrolled down the comments to see that someone else (you) noted the similarity.
@@glennledrew8347 lol that sound just leaps out at you
That's Colonel Davenport from 12 O'Clock High.
And John Dehner is here again, I lost counting how many times he appeared in this show
The only snag with this was how did Parks know how to use the flying sub, and where the laser was. The writers did not consider amending the script due to Basehart illness.
Because Gary Merrill was a man of many talents.
Maybe Nelson slipped Park a copy of the FS1 User Manual?
The 60s, and 80s put alot of emphasize on the color resolution of their shows and movies. Im always stopping to watch this era of color tv and majority of the films far out outstanding once everything was remastered for today's TVs and monitors. Its very much like you being there of a yesterday vibe of watching. Just love the 60s and 80s films due to the great resolution, they all became CLASSICs of watching again.
The fact the doc played multiple German officers on Hogan and is using a luger here, made me laugh
Not a Luger. Much later design. P38.
Menfish...Creature from the Black Lagoon lookalike. Fun nonsense all the same. Appreciate this escape from the crazy world of today.
The Manfish costume first appeared in a B&W episode of “Lost in Space”.
Also the episode with the Mermaid. Irwin Allen was on a budget and had to repurpose and recycle.
@@stevecampbell7620 For science fiction TV, this seemed to always be the case. Just look at The Outer Limits and Star Trek.
Dignos de volverse a ver los episodios... Por favor activa los subtítulos en español. Gracias.
The manfish sounds like a Tie Fighter. Probably from the same 20th Century Fox Studios sound library.
One of the better monster episodes. Funny enough Victor Lundin shows up later in the series as a lobster man. Someone like Tom Gries directing this episode speaks volumes (created Rat Patrol and directed Will Penny).
as hokey as it is to see a man in cheap costume, i immensely prefer it over the best cgi
Agreed.
Agree!
Yes!!
They sold more toy subs than Batmobiles the sub would go in the bath with you and they had a powder to put in it so it stayed under then came up when the powder dissolved it float ed up
Like Star Trek and Land of the Giants there were many episodes they banned on tv for reasons that today seem strange or crazy. I suspect this was due to the Cold War in the the 1960-70s
The Docktor was anything but a good Menschfish.
🤣🤣🤣
How considerate of the manfish to never roll the sub past 45 degrees. Nor does any other monster that I recall in the whole series. It sure would ruin the crew's day to be banging off the ceilings.
The creature's roar sounded an awful lot like a TIE fighter. When the thing grew to giant size, its roar should change in pitch at least a bit, eh.
I think George Lucas would tell us that all the Star Wars SFX are original, but you never know what might have inspired them back in the 70's...
HOW? did they not fall down laughing while filming this !!
😆 Maybe they did! Irwin Allen was not one for humor and did not take kindly to the cast making fun of the scripts. Too bad - the outtakes would be priceless.
It's not the same without our beloved Admiral, I don't think the Captain would of risked everything for this Admiral the bond was not there! 🤔
Look closely at the door frame of the escape hatch. It is wood painted silver.
It's the same sea monster from the episode "The Mermaid" and the same fighting scenes as well.
One good boutique deserves another!
Oops-- lousy spell check. One good BOUT deserves another.
At least in the mermaid episode the eyes of the actor (monster) are covered unlike this episode.
The eyes of the manfish made it almost look like it was a human wearing a fish suit, lol.
Ya think? LOL. Classic Irwin Allen.
But in the mermaid episode, the head piece had lenses for the eyes.
As with all the episodes, the realism was first rate, except, depth of s sub is generally keel depth to surface, not bottom.
"The Menfish" in "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea" episode 24 in Season 2 is sounding like--"Creature From the Black Lagoon" as the classic monster and horror movie in comparison.
I don’t know the actors name offhand but the assistant was the slave in Robinson Crusoe on Mars!
Victor Lundin. Duh saw it in the credits.
@@davidreed3165 The time merchant on lost in space, and the lobster man in a later episode of this show
Victor Lundin played a Klingon officer on Star Trek. Anyone recall which episode?
@@mohamad-ms2pb “Errand of Mercy”, portraying a second in command to Kor.
@@historybuff66 👍👍
Same 'manfish suit' and some scenes re-used with the episode "Mermaid"
Those fishmen sound like tie fighters from starwars
Admirals would never have open collars and no tie. A uniform must always be worn properly.
More relaxed ship. Seaview is "civilian management" largely, despite much of the "staff" being "former" USN. [Note episode "Mutiny, " season 1].
Adm. Park was a very good substitute for Adm. Nelson and should have been a regular or semi-regular character.
ToolmanTV...
Is GOD❤
No, not God, but thank you for the sentiment anyway.
Crain calls the admiral captain at the end anyone else notice?.
Are these episodes edited at all as opposed to the dvd set? Are these restorations part of a subsequent blu ray release? .
These episodes were edited by the distributor to run on broadcast TV channels. About two minutes have been cut from the original program, and the film has been sped up slightly to make up for the rest of the time needed for commercials. The cuts occur in various places and are different lengths. Each cut may be only a few seconds long. The DVD's are the full-length episodes. As far as I know, there are no plans for a blu-ray release... but wouldn't that be great!
Thanks for the info, I have the dvd series set but have not rewatched it in several years but this remaster looks incredible, I remember watching this as a kid when it originally aired along with Lost In Space. @@TooleManTV
Guess the boyfriend smelled his girlfriend's scent on the Captain. That's how he found her. They were probanly borh mad.😮😮 0:00
I will rise up.
I shall have dominion over the oceans, the Earth, the galaxy, the UNIVERSE!
I will be a living...
COD!
😅😅😅😅
What I can't stand about this episode is that the Capt drops his gun when the lunatic doctor is threatening the admiral. All he had to do is shoot him in the head and turn the gizmo off. Simple and easy. It really is a stretch to think he's in charge of the Seaview but doesn't have the guts or brains to kill the psycho. Oh well I still love the show and really appreciate you putting it up here for us old fogeys 😂🤣😂🤣 And yes we had the best shows. The best variety and good actors.
Yes, the "drop your gun" trope. Script writers still use that today.
Definitely one of Voyage's weaker episodes script/plot and logic wise! - great to see Gary Merrill filling in for Richard Basehart though. These episodes all look terrific picture quality wise and with whatever enhancements you've added, were they commissioned from someone originally by MeTV? Shame about the trims though.
No series 1?
I think 20th Century Fox provided the HDTV versions with the cuts for MeTV and any other channel that pays to run the show. Took them long enough, too. The old syndicated films were bad - scratchy, dark, and ugly to watch. I have upgraded the video more after recording the broadcasts from a local HD channel, but it would not be possible without an HDTV source.
@@TooleManTV All very nicely done, they do look quite good in your versions
Did I miss why it was necessary to make a man fish? Other than the mad Dr hell bent on ocean domination, did no one think this was a bit weird ?
Yeah, why would you want to dominate the oceans? Do they want a monopoly on the fishing market? Lol
Also like William Read Woodfield and Alan Balter as tv writers. They also did two decent Lost in Space episodes. Mission Impossible and others. Balter collaborated with another writer on two decent Outer Limits. I wish they had used them more on Lost and Voyage instead of Peter Packer and William Welch.,who were mostly horrible. Irwin used them obviously because they worked fast
I agree! Woodfield by himself wrote most of the outstanding episodes of season one, and with Balter they wrote some of the best of season two. I read that they did not like working for Irwin, and they left the show after season two.
"Worked Fast". True. After season 2, it's mostly about speed. I'm offering a defense of the writers here though . They're following the course change handed down from the very top (not Irwin). Season 1 and 2 had proven to be very expensive and the price for renewal for year 3 was an extensive "trimming" of the product. Production people who prepared the old "Tom Clancy" format did indeed leave the show.
Did these GUYS eat? They never go to the mess deck on the SEAVIEW. OR THE GALLEY.
Where are Kowalski and the chief when you need them
That poor fish.
This guy is a fiend insane
A VERY GOOD SERIES BUT SOMETHING FISHY GOING ON IF IT IS A MAN THAT MEANS HE HAS FISH FINGERS FROM SHAUN S W FRANCE 🇫🇷 HAPPY VIEWING FOLKS
Who was the actor who played the manfish?
Victor Lundun, who also played the Friday type character in the science fiction classic 1964s Robinson Curuso on Mars.
You mean the actor in the Monster Suit? Dawson Palmer did many surface Monster scenes for Voyage and Lost In Space. Underwater? I'd like to know too. Fortunately with more Voyage information coming out we may get more names of Voyage extras and stunt people soon....
It´s like Star Trek TOS just from the sea. Even the music seems to be similar.
Some of the music in this episode was scored by Alexander Courage. First featured in the episode "The Cyborg".
Weren’t there any young actors in those days?
There is a ton of actors well below 40 in this show.
Why @ 30:40 doesn't Crane just simply grab the device and slug the doctor? I know, it's TV and you have to have a story.
Bonitos monstruos.
Could you clarify why the US didn't build the Seaview carrying a flying sub? They were incredibly innovative back in the 1960s. Today's WOKE generation complains about racism and focuses on social issues instead of working together to build new innovations to advance pioneer spirits and explore beneath the sea.
How did we survive the 60's
The endless week after week of men in cheap rubber monster suits is why I stopped watching VTTBOTS.
Not cheap! 😝
Voyage to the bottom of the sewer. Script sewer, that is. Low brow thrills. But it sold soap.
All these big monsters grappling with the Seaview never twig onto fully rolling the boat over. They considerately limit the roll to about 45 degrees. 😅
It's what the PTB determined would keep the audience watching. Also foreign sales, which preferred the creature features. In the short term, it worked. Syndication sales likely scored more with the monsters, too.
Tooleman. Thanks for the "not cheap" defense of Voyage creature suits. Some may not like "monsters" but overall they WERE well crafted suits.Thank you.
@@AdmiralNelson1000 They were cheap scuba suits with pieces of rubber glued on. You’re welcome😁
It’s hard to believe something so stupid actually made it into production 😂
Yet here you are.
