I think it's impossible not to fall down while learnig how to skate. The main problem of the beginners is that they are extremely rigid and stressed because they're afraid that they actually will fall down at a certain moment. So it is necessary to realise that falling down happens and it usually doesn't cause serious injuries. So if someone just starts skating try to stay relaxed and low on your knees - it works.
BTW, like the sorrounding on your video and the birds singing :)

Yeah... It was my first session yesterday and I feel like I was falling down because I was afraid of it. I was really scared of gaining speed I won't be able to disperse and then stop so I kept doing awkward moves only not to fall. I think if I accepted that I'm going to fall, I would control it much better and learn faster. I also realized I have no idea how to stop, it's tough. :(

I've done gymnastics for some years, and my general rule for falling is to never let my hands touch the ground. It feels safe to put the hands down, I know - but honestly, piledriving shoulder-first inte the tarmac is less likely to break bone than attempting to absorb any significant amount of force through the palms. In a break-fall roll, the hands aren't supposed to do anything but redirect the force onto the back and shoulder ridge.
The muscles are your friend. If you're falling backwards, tilt slightly to the side and flex your glutes. Your butt will be bruised, but it will be hurt far less than your spine or your hands. If you're falling sideways, curl your shoulder up to your chest and disperse the force all the way from the shoulder ridge down to the lower back. The torso is the unbreakable fortress that you retreat to when all goes to shit.
Another key note of mine is to avoid frontal rolls on skates - they just don't work like when normally do. If you fall forward, do your best to hit the ground sideways. An under-rotating roll is ultimately what you're going to get if you attempt to roll forward on skates, which is bound to hurt both your head/neck and your wrists. The best roll to use is the side-roll, since it doesn't use the hands at all and copes better with the fact that you have wheels on your feet, which prevents certain types of movement.

I totally agree. From gymnastics to martial arts the rule of thumb has been pull in your extremities and make a ball of your body.

  • @InlineDownhillVancouver

I highly recommend against using one's hands to break a fall, *especially* for downhill. It can lead to wrist, elbow, and shoulder injuries. At slow speeds, it's not as critical, but still applicable. I recommend falling on the forearm and tucking it into your body, eventually transfer the impact to the upper arm and shoulder.
Ideally, the legs will be bent, greatly reducing the risk of falling. If one does fall with bent legs, ideally it will be a slide out, impacting with the outside of the skate and then the outside knee, hip, forearm, and shoulder consecutively.

    • @InlineDownhillVancouver
      @InlineDownhillVancouver 3 роки тому +4

@@OVXX666 you've made a huge error if you fall backwards. Step one to learning how to skate is *bent legs* and *leaning forward." Leaning back is a nervous reaction to a fear of a lack of balance. Never lean back! If you lose your balance, get lower, and lean forward; better yet, just stay low and forward from the start.

@@OVXX666 You've completely glossed over the essential elements of my comment.
When someone asks me how they stop while they're completely out of control skating down a hill, I teach them how to avoid that situation to begin with by learning the basics of skating and stopping.
If you're falling backwards, you haven't been adequately prepared to start skating. Falling backwards is a high risk for injury, regardless of protection. Nonetheless, wear all protections while learning.

This is the video I wanted. I'm 58 and starting to blade. I now realise I need knee pads as a contact point before my hands and backside. Great video.

I am not 20 anymore. I used to rollerblade without any protections. Now it's padded shorts under my cargo shorts, knee guards, wrists guards, helmet, and even elbow guards when I attempt new stuff. It's nice to be able to fall on uneven pavement without coming home lacerated.

I used to skate a lot. I would go on any surface at high speeds and had no problems with it. But then i fell and fractured my wrist (i was about to hit a wall. Anyway). That happen like 5 years ago, and since then i could only skate on very smooth surfaces, and it's really annoying. I've been really scared that I'd fall, but i hope i can get over my fear now

Awesome video! It's very informative - especially the physics lesson at the end! I didn't realise how important learning how to fall was until I learned it the hard way, I ended up semi-faceplanting after skating back from work in heavy rain last year. I didn't wear a helmet and got home looking like I'd lost a MMA fight. After that incident I started watching skateboarder, aggressive skater and freerunner falls/fails, how to fall/roll videos to see what I should do and shouldn't do and then practiced falling and rolling on grass. I came across your video today and absolutely loved it. It goes through just about everything and reminded me not to forget the basic little things that could be the difference between life and death in some cases. I like how you are comedic in the way you deliver a serious topic so people aren't afraid to fall - they shouldn't be because you've taught them now! Liked & subbed! :)

My falls are 99% from tripping over something I didn't see, so the fall happens VERY fast... too fast for me to be able to realize what's happening 'til my face slams into the ground. I've split my lip 3 times. The first was without a mouthguard, and I had $6,000 worth of broken teeth to repair. The other two times I wore a mouth guard, and although I still gashed my lip, at least my teeth were saved. But these swan-dive falls have happened too many times. Something stops my skate(s) dead, I pitch forward, and the next thing I know, I'm eating pavement for lunch. My legs are very strong, but I wonder if lack of upper body strength could be contributing to my inability to react fast enough to try to roll. I'm sitting here recovering today from a spectacular crash during a parade 2 days ago. My group was in front of the judges' stand and I was doing a fast rolling toe-heel split... an easy and usually stable move for me. Then my front skate hit something on the street (I think it was a piece of candy) and I swan-dived. My mouth guard was in, so I still have my teeth! However, I chose not to wear knee pads and my left knee barely bends now. I gashed the inside of my mouth (not sure how) and the front of my lip... both were deep. Also strained my left calf muscle and my right shoulder. (Third time in 10 months for that shoulder). I wish my wipe-out could have been captured on video so I could study it to see what I'm doing wrong. But I still wonder if building up more core and upper body strength would help me to fall better....

Do you have a leading skate? I.e. one in front and NOT side by side? If the front skate gets stuck then recover by shifting to balance to the other.

Most of the time I have one foot in front, one behind. Even so, if I catch that front skate on something, I feel like my reaction time to get the other foot out in front of me is too slow. In the fall I described above, my front heel wheel hit something, and that leg was at least 5 feet ahead of the other one. I also don't seem to be able to get my arms into the right position quickly enough to be able to prevent my head from continuing to come forward and hit the ground. In the meantime, as I wait 'til my knee is strong enough to skate on again, I'm working hard on doing upper body strengthening because I think it's something that can't hurt, and might help. ;^)

It’s my first time in line skating after about 20 years and today I had a bad fall, slipped on a slope and landed face first, on my lips. Lower lips bled and upper teeth really bled from the impact! Thankfully my teeth are still in place but there simply isn’t enough reaction time to roll to a better
      Position sometimes

  • @Alex-kr7zr

I like your physics lesson. Also, I think it's very important to respect downhill skating, not only because of speed, but also because it's hard to lower speed and the higher risk of falling backwards or loosing balance (which is the main cause of falling according to studies).

I stumble most when I'm doing crossovers going fast on ruff crappy pavement, all I wear is wrist guards, but I keep my hands low and out In front a bit when being risky and ready to push and roll if I fall..staying low really helps as well.

I myself only wear wrist guards. knee and elbow pads really make movement much worse, and a helmet is just extra weight added to your head. as an advanced skater, i can tell you that you will barely fall or get injured seriously while freeskating (except for small bruises on the elbow, which disappear after 1-2 weeks). but i highly recommend wearing protection when going for halpfpipes and jumps

i am new to skating, but i know from grade school gym class and martial arts that you should roll/tumble when falling forward. if its not second nature you could do one practice roll on grass at every skate session til it does imho. as for falling backwards, i haven’t figured out that out. i dislocated fingers breaking my fall, so don’t do that.

I just went on a roller skating trip at my school and tried inline skates because they were easier to learn for me as my first time and I’ve never fell forward I always fell backward never knew how to catch my self and then i fell backwards landed on my butt and it hurt badly but it didn’t hurt as bad as my wrists did, literally my wrists were in pain for a day or two because I tried catching my self on my hands but when I landed I landed pretty hard. Also can someone tell how to not do the splits while moving forward on inline skates that’s literally the only reason I ever fall forward and hurt my knees while inline skating.
