Michael Singer’s Relax and Release Technique: How To Be Present, The Untethered Soul

  • I had anxiety after giving birth to my daughter. Then, one evening, had a moment of present (joy) with her that has made me determined to be more present more often! The next morning, I started re-reading, The Untethered Soul, by Michael Singer and found a practice that helped me finally fall asleep while she was sleeping, which was a huge problem I was having.
    Thoughts and emotions are energy and they get stored in the body and if we don’t let go that energy will generate more energy and heaviness and take up more space in our body. When we relax and let the thought and/or emotion pass right though us, we can be available for the present moment. We are not weighed down by stored energy from our thoughts and emotions. We are just making space for new thoughts and emotions that the present moment experience will give us.
    The practice is to relax and release. Relax your body and imagine your thoughts leaving through your heart. Then return to being in the present moment. Give this a try, you may need to say relax and release to yourself 100 times a day but it works - don't give up!

    Thank you so much for posting this. However, I believe there is more to Singer's relax and release technique. Here's a quote from The Untethered Soul (page 104 in my paperback edition): "When you feel pain, simply view it as energy. ... Then relax. Do the opposite of contracting and closing. Relax and release. Relax your heart until you are actually face-to-face with the exact place where it hurts. Stay open and receptive so you can be present right where the tension is. You must be willing to be present right at the place of the tightness and pain, and then relax and go even deeper. ... As you relax and feel the resistance, the heart will want to pull away, to close, to protect, and to defend itself. Keep relaxing. Relax your shoulders and relax your heart. Let go and give room for the pain to pass through you."

      That's so true. He calls it yoga of the heart ♥. It's also known as a sanskara. Energy that gets blocked over time in your body. When you learn how to let it flow through you it doesn't get stuck. It also releases blocked energy from the past.

    I’ve read this book & his other one “The Surrender Experiment” AND I’ve done & go back to continually .. His 8 video program on the Sounds True website platform .. it is AMAZING... I practice surrender/let go everyday ... let go of expectations & outcomes.. we have NO control over anything except ourselves - control nothing outside of ourselves ... relax & release the RESISTANCE in my body ..

    Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!! Just hearing you say that you had to do it like 50 times is soooo helpful to me! My mind is incredibly stubborn and persistent! Just knowing that if I keep doing this technique, I will experience not only relief but true healing is so comforting to me. I am currently taking Michael's course "Living from a Place of Surrender" but I just started so haven't even gotten to the techniques yet. So grateful for all of this information. It is perfect for someone like me with what psychology calls "abandonment trauma" but I love seeing it simply as "energy". So helpful, thank you!

      Hi Chris, yes my method has evolved. When I feel stress from a thought or event I still relax and release but I have added my ‘why’ now I am quicker to let go because I want to be happy, have energy and an open heart for my life. I remember my ‘why’ and it has leveled up my practice big time:) thank you for asking? How is it going for you?

      Hey I'm a little late here but definitely check out the book "the sedona method" from hale dwoskin if you want some bulletproof practices on how to do exactly what michael singer is talking about. Or just search for "hale dwoskin releasing" on youtube or google sedona method :)
