Great work on the list. So tough to compile one of these because I think there are so many amazing artists who deserve a spot on the Top 10. That said, I'm so surprised that Alex Toth wasn't top 5 (or honorable mentions).
I'm another one who is surprised Ditko didn't make the list as I thought he would be a lock for the top 5. Glad to see Joe Kubert (don't forget his Enemy Ace!) make the top 5 and a little surprised Alex Schomberg made it in. Great discussion/talking points though and it's always fun to debate these lists, as well as give more exposure to some of these all-time greats.
There are too many artists to list really. When I started collecting as a teen in the 80s the top two were Byrne and Perez. As I became an adult, perhaps my favorite today is John Buscema.
It goes to show how rich this hobby's history is. You just can't argue with anybody on that list. Somewhere on my list would be the name of Darwyn Cooke. I just adore his work across the board. Thanks for putting this list together, guys!
José Luis García-López was the artist that DC brought in to draw the ACTUAL template, for their characters, for all artists in the 1980s going forward, with the DC Style Guide. Major oversight.
Thanks for these videos, I always learn a lot from you guys. IMO Jack Kirby is the GOAT 4sure! Did I miss John Buscema? The Silver Surfer/Avengers/FF would be in my top 10.
We had a lengthy discussion about him and we both agree. I think his work in Charlton hurt him, and he is heavily disliked by many comic fans. I have always liked him.
@@futurepastvintagecollectables I like Ditko a lot too, and he would make my list. Just so quirky and unique. And some of those covers he did for Charlton are amazing (to use an adjective he had some familiarity with). But admittedly his post-Spidey career and behaviour didn't win too many people over. In my opinion, though, winning a lot of people over isn't always an accurate measure of quality.
Great List, & like how you tried to give Golden Age artist their due… however, not even giving honorable mentions to John Buscema, Jose Garcia Lopez, Barry Windsor Smith, and Moebius seems like a crime. Everyone likes to put Kirby first, but he was most prolific more than he was the greatest artist.

Great list! Mine would include: Paul Gulacy, Gene Colan, Moebius, Brian Bolland, Geof Darrow, Dave Stevens and Stuart Immonen.
Thank you! We really were being as objective as possible. It wasn’t a list of who we liked the most, it was a list of the greatest. That made it a bit more static.
Within the artistry and writing of comics, I put Crumb in the top five , or top three... his autobiographical stuff is far more influential than many of your listed greats.
Really cool stuff in these last 2 videos.Love this kind of stuff!! Frank Frazetta will always be my man! I just recently got a couple of books from the Frazetta Girls of Teegra from the Animated Movie, Fire and Ice, that he did in the 80s. Jack Kirby I agree on your #1, Marvel really screwed him over though.
Kirby is king. I'm glad you spoke to not only how important he was as an illustrator but as a creative force. Plotting so much of the Marvel Universe and basically defining the epic scale of the comic book stage. No one gets to do what he did because he did it first but I'm glad it was him.
Plus, he did all that post WW II work while having to battle almost entirely alone the effects of then-undiagnosed PTSD from combat service. Incredible.
Bob kane, martin Nodell, CC BECK, Jerry seigel, Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, Dick Sprang, Jim Steranko, Bernie Wrightson. Is that enough. How about Frank Frazetta!?😂❤
WHAT THE ACTUAL HECK?? Not even an honorable mention for Sturdy Steve Ditko? Creator of Dr Strange and a certain web-slinger and a massive influence on some of the biggest and best comic creators. Also, Gil Kane HAS to at least get a namecheck: the greatest anatomical comic artist from the 50s to the 80s. Otherwise top-notch entertainment, fellas. A good call on Corben. I'd add both Michael Golden and Dave Stevens to my personal stack. Lastly, delighted to say I own most of the comics featured in this episode, so you must be doing something right 😀
I actually agree with the entire list. I was a little hesitant with Frazetta too cause of his body of work in comics wasn’t as large as most others. So gentlemen…how about a Top 10 most underrated comic artists? Lots to choose from.
I have to agree with many of the comments-- JOHN BUSCEMA! Of all the artists of the day, he probably had the best sense of actual human anatomy and proper proportions- a truly gifted figure drawer (probably the best figure drawer since Burne Hogarth), and because his art was so anatomically correct, it made his characters more engaging and the stories more incredible and realistic. Every page seemed like you could walk into them and be a part of the dynamic scene. His Avengers work included some of the best stories and art of the entire first run. The single page conclusion of Avengers #58 with the Vision ("Even an Android can Cry") is probably the best single panel art of any Avenger, evoking more emotion than any I can think of. And he was an Android, for craps sake!! That is the genius of John Buscema. His Silver Surfer work was perhaps his true peak, including issue #4 with Thor and Silver Surfer on the cover that is one of the greatest and most memorable superhero comic covers of all time. A lot of covers of other artists get that exclamation and many are incredible, but this one is truly in the top 10 best ever, IMHO. His art just raised the technical prowess of drawing superheroes to a higher level that many aspired to but most never reached, including his brother Sal, who was decent but not in the same league. I didn't care much for his later Conan work and it seemed to get more monotonous and less memorable as time went on (and Conan always had racoon eyes). But the Avengers and Silver Surfer work- WOW! Great stuff. BTW, I still have my copy of "How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way" by John Buscema and Stan Lee. It truly defines why Marvel's comics were generally more exciting to read and view than D.C.'s (with all due respect to greats like Neal Adams, Bernie Wrightson, Mike Grell, etc.) If John's not in the top 10, he's in the top 15. Avengers Assemble!
I guessed 4 of 5 but I agree Schomburg belongs on the list more than Ditko for artwork, but for creativeness and characters created Ditko belongs on the list. I appreciate Kirby's work far more than I enjoy it.
Absolutely it's subjective (but I love that Danny mentioned Mike Kaluta - one of my faves). And never forget about Kirby's Dingbats, it's a real slapper (to coin a phrase from Dave).
No idea how I could've overlooked Neal Adams. Many fans may be unaware that Jack Kirby also did layouts for other artists during early Marvel years. Including Jim Steranko, John Buscema, John Romita, Sr. and Don Heck. Some overlooked Silver Age artists include Gil Kane, Carmine Infantino and (early) George Tuska & Herb Trimpe. Also, Mike Grell, Marie Severin, Marshall Rogers, Walter Simonson and Steve Rude. Perhaps a Top Ten list for Golden, Silver, Bronze, Copper and Modern Age artists?
You two should sit down and write your own version of the history of comics as you interpret their most impactful artists, writers, and storylines. I recently read the book “All the Marvels”. Not a bad read at all (and I recommend it in sections) but it lacks the enthusiasm of your two VLOGS. Thanks guys.
Great list guys. I’d like to throw some other names out there though, that I think you overlooked. Jose Luis Garcia Lopez, Mac Raboy and Lou Fine. Just wanted to toss those out there. And George Perez should be in the top 10 IMO, he’s way more than an honorable mention. Overall though, I thoroughly enjoyed your picks.
I know that he's not as impactful, but in terms of bringing 'art' to comic art the way Frazetta did, I think Bill Sienkiewicz did the same - in a much different (more modern) way. He did the art for the Classics Illustrated version of Moby Dick and it's stunning. I struggle to think of a better example of an artist using art to tell the story...not just in his panels, his pacing etc but using style to capture tone and atmosphere...his art put the reader into that story. It's incredible.
Yes Kirby is 3 (or 4??) times more important to comics than Frank Frazetta and Neal Adam’s combined. However, Adam’s and Frazetta are tied for first place as the best artists. I gave this 10 minute’s of contemplation therefore I must be right!
Did you mention Gene Colon? One of my all time favourite artists….Dracula, Daredevil, Iron Man, Dr Strange….brilliant work
Wally Wood, very underrated.
Great work on the list. So tough to compile one of these because I think there are so many amazing artists who deserve a spot on the Top 10. That said, I'm so surprised that Alex Toth wasn't top 5 (or honorable mentions).
Kirby is the GOAT…..nuff said
Great videos and choices. The only omission is Steve Ditko. He cannot be overlooked.
New subscriber here. Great list, by the way! How about an Indy Comics Top Ten Artists?...🤔👍🏻
Expected Gil Kane to get an honorable mention. What a great cover artist.
There are too many artists to list really. When I started collecting as a teen in the 80s the top two were Byrne and Perez. As I became an adult, perhaps my favorite today is John Buscema.
John and Sal Buscema not mentioned in the honorable mentions was a bit surprising for sure.
Interesting list.
Agreed:
#10-2: ???
#1: Jack Kirby
It goes to show how rich this hobby's history is. You just can't argue with anybody on that list. Somewhere on my list would be the name of Darwyn Cooke. I just adore his work across the board. Thanks for putting this list together, guys!

Im disappointed Steve Ditko wasnt listed somewhere in honorable mention. But, overall awesome picks. Jack Kirby definitely #1.
We had a lengthy discussion about him and we both agree. I think his work in Charlton hurt him, and he is heavily disliked by many comic fans. I have always liked him.

You should do a video on Modern Artists.
My all time Favs are Pepe Lazzaz, Chris Bachalo, Humberto Ramos.
Great List, & like how you tried to give Golden Age artist their due… however, not even giving honorable mentions to John Buscema, Jose Garcia Lopez, Barry Windsor Smith, and Moebius seems like a crime. Great list! Mine would include: Paul Gulacy, Gene Colan, Moebius, Brian Bolland, Geof Darrow, Dave Stevens and Stuart Immonen.
Excellent video. Enjoy the videos you do with your brother. They’re usually very informative and entertaining.
Thanks for watching!
Great list 👍 great conversation!
Would be great if you would do a top ten writers. And I do think Jack Kirby should be on that list as well.
I absolutely love your list. I mean anyone can quibble about an artist being placed a couple slots higher but I think you nailed the best of the best!
Thank you! We really were being as objective as possible. It wasn’t a list of who we liked the most, it was a list of the greatest. That made it a bit more static.
Kubert was king of those covers where the hero thinks everything is ok but behind him someone was about to attack
Agree 100% ....but John Buscema could have got a little mention, I think ? Pretty great work from him as well. 👍
It was an oversight really. We left out TONS of fantastic artists due to time constraints.
Within the artistry and writing of comics, I put Crumb in the top five , or top three... his autobiographical stuff is far more influential than many of your listed greats.
I’m a huge Crumb fan too!
You have mentioned George Perez you have mentioned Neal Adams you have even mentioned John Byrne what about JOHN BUSCEMA????

Thanks great video lots of fun
Great list. Long live the King!
Wonderful list.
Thank you!
Bill Everett - Michael Golden - Herge - Goscinny - John Burns - Pablo Marcus
all Greats…
Honorable mention Garcia Lopez
Bob kane, martin Nodell, CC BECK, Jerry seigel, Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, Dick Sprang, Jim Steranko, Bernie Wrightson. Is that enough. How about Frank Frazetta!?😂❤
Number four here

Jim Starlin would be in my top 10. Amazing with the cosmic stuff. Ditko deserves at least honourable mention.
“John Buscema” is not even mentioned?!?!
Richard Corben is in a class of his own imo
I actually agree with the entire list.
I was a little hesitant with Frazetta too cause of his body of work in comics wasn’t as large as most others.
So gentlemen…how about a Top 10 most underrated comic artists?
Lots to choose from.
Yes! Top 10 underrated artists please!!

Good points!
Sterenko deserved an honorable mention. Same as Romita Jr, Carmine Infantino and a bunch others
We did mention Steranko in part one.
@ I missed that part. Gotta make sure that guy gets his credit
Neal Adams 😊
A couple of guys I enjoy that don't have the work to be near your list are Arthur Adams and P. Craig Russell.
Could you do a list for each age or even better each decade?
Top tier selections
No Buscema?
Absolutely it's subjective (but I love that Danny mentioned Mike Kaluta - one of my faves). And never forget about Kirby's Dingbats, it's a real slapper (to coin a phrase from Dave).
Where would we be without the dingbats!
John Buscema what about John Buscema. One of the best artist to take up a pencil
Jim Starlin and Russ Manning
My personal tastes would include Mike Zeck, Michael Golden, Bill Sienkiewicz and more recently Phil Noto.
I got some of those books from you, Dave.
What about Barry Windsor Smith?

I agree. I could say the same for mobius. They just didn’t make our cut for the greatest.
I'd have to put Ditko and John Buscema in the list. And Perez should be more than an honorable mention.
The cover of FF 108 is by Buscema, not Kirby. (Though the issue does contain the reworked Janus story by Kirby.)
Gene Colan
Gil Kane
Barry Windsor-Smith
John Romita Sr.
John Buscema
1. Adams
2. Frazetta
3. Gil Kane
Look for joe kubert in sojourn.
got to meet joe kubert few hears ago and had fanzine signed snd found out wsa a boot leg reptinting some early stories.
He had a great signature!
Yes Kirby is 3 (or 4??) times more important to comics than Frank Frazetta and Neal Adam’s combined.
However, Adam’s and Frazetta are tied for first place as the best artists.
I gave this 10 minute’s of contemplation therefore I must be right!
No Rich Corben???
What? No Steve Ditko? Not even an honorable mention? Missed big time on that.
No Joe Jusko?
You feel Joe Jusko is one of the top 10 greatest comic book artists’?
Without a doubt top 10 in my opinion
I'm not being rude but you two together look like a status quo appreciation band. It's so distracting we will need to watch this again.
All those beautiful covers and you’re looking at us!?! That’s like a Bentley driving by and you’re looking at a VW.
Oh my gosh, that's funny.
I am glad to see Joe K get respect. I really like his limited work on the Flash. I really think Nick Cardy in general is under appreciated.
Joe Kubert also did Witchcraft #2 PCH
