Money is not complicated. Frugality and minimalism are the main tools that will allow you to gain financial control over your life; however, in addition, there is another tool that will allow you to achieve anything financially and it is called "Delayed Gratification."
Delayed gratification is simply "The ability to wait to get what you want." And it is my frugal secret to achieve anything financially in your life. In this video I share "10 Reasons to Seek Delayed Gratification."
    1. Nothing Worthwhile Comes Quickly
When it comes to money and finances, we want things to happen quickly and with little effort. When we seek this route, however, it rarely works out. Nothing worthwhile comes quickly because when something comes quickly you have little understanding and appreciation of it. Delayed gratification works because it is slow.
    2. Achieving Any "Dream" Is Just A Collection Of Tiny Decisions
I have been able to achieve many dreams in my life and what I have experienced is that dreams are just collections of many tiny decisions. We make many tiny decisions every day like if we should spend money or save money, and all of those tiny decisions add up to something bigger. When you achieve a dream you understand what it took to get to that point; however, other people will view it as one single thing. All dreams are connected to money and are just collections of tiny decisions.
    3. Instant Gratification Is Usually A Curse
The opposite of delayed gratification is "instant" gratification. Many people seek instant gratification wanting things quickly and with little effort. And although instant gratification can give you gratification it is short lived and usually followed by a negative outcome.
    4. Delayed Gratification Works 100% Of The Time
Delayed gratification has been a strategy that I have used that has allowed me to achieve many things in my life. Delayed gratification, however, is a very slow process where you won't be able to reap the benefits until far down the road. In my experience, if you are patience and consistent, instant gratification always works.
    5. Delayed Gratification Is Realistic
In the personal finance community, many people speak about things that the average person is unable to accomplish like risky investments or real estate; however, I believe that this is not realistic for the average person. Delayed gratification is extremely slow, but it is the most realistic route to achieving anything financially.
    6. Delayed Gratification Makes Money Easier
Money is not complicated. Many people avoid personal finances because they believe that money is very complex. Money is just basic math and if you know basic math then you can be an expert in personal finance. Delayed gratification involves waiting and being realistic, and, although it is boring, it makes money easy because you do not deal with loans, payments, and debt.
    7. Delayed Gratification Give You The Ability To Hold On To Something
When something comes slowly, you learn many things along the way. On the journey you learn appreciation, patience, and how to hold onto something. When something comes quickly, you do not gain those skills. Delayed gratification teaches you how to hold on.
    8. Delayed Gratification Is Sustainable
Instant gratification is not sustainable. It gives you quick bursts of gratification, but is followed by stress, worry, and uncertainty. You cannot live you life constantly seeking instant gratification. Delayed gratification is a sustainable way to live you life.
    9. Life Is Nothing Without The Journey
Life is about the journey, not the destination. The journey is so important because that is where you develop as a person. Delayed gratification is a journey that will not just benefit you financially, but will also benefit you as an individual.
    10. The Sacrifice Is Worth It
When I speak about delayed gratification, people often think that is a life of deprivation; however, the path to instant gratification is, in fact, a life of deprivation. When it comes to finances we often hear things like, "Treat yourself. You deserve it." Treat yourself with options. You don't deserve a life where you are constantly trying to catch up from the negative outcomes of instant gratification. Seek delayed gratification because the sacrifice is worth it and leads to a richer life.

Mine was a house and car fully paid off which I achieved at 51. The house is 3 b/2bath it was a foreclosure with no heat, broken a/c and a hole in the roof. 45K. I worked 3 jobs to put in new roof and a/c and gutted the bathrooms (well that is a lie I paid someone) Finally having heating and air and a new roof was worth it. I took every shift out there. Car is 22 yrs old no payments with 207k miles (honda) I still work 2 jobs because I love money! I am 100% Irish and miss backpacking through europe so that is what I am saving for now. house is worth $200k now as Greenville, SC is booming. But all those days with no a/c - talk about delayed gratification, I get it!

Austin, you must have passed “the marshmallow test” with flying colours as a kid. I learned about it doing a psychology course. It’s so true, delayed gratification works. I’m using an iPhone 7 at the moment, it was a big jump from the iPhone 4 and when it’s exhausted itself with all my ramblings, I’ll probably go for an iPhone 11, but I think they are up to a 14 now in production, Im not in a hurry. I buy a car a few years old and keep it going as long as I can, my son was in preschool when I bought my last car and I only replaced it after he graduated his high school. My parents are the same, they bought their last washing machine in 1988 and only replaced it last year!

Yes! Delayed gratification is so important in all aspects of life: you can't eat everything and anything and not work out and expect to have a decent body (it takes time), you can't have a decent corporate job without having to go through school first (it takes time), you can't marry the love of your life without nurturing the relationship first (it takes time), it goes on and on... Funny how this is such a difficult concept to grasp for some people. Patience and consistency win every time.

Coffee with Sr Augustine…. At 62, I have to balance doing things NOW and making sure I can do what I need to do later. I still have some dreams and bucket list items to explore and the time to do them is running out. I’m set financially but I’ve seen people with more than I have “blow it.” I’m not going to be that person. I practice “enoughism” and I think that is a sister to Delayed Gratification. I applaud you and and meaningful, applicable messages!

People had lost the sense of enough. Consumerism it's a sickness that take our sense of satisfaction away, people don't get satisfied , so they keep consuming...no sense of satisfaction in food made overweight society that leads to do many diseases: cancer, diabetes, etc, so it makes more money for the pharma mafia, no satisfaction in our mind creates overthinking that leads to mental illnesses, again it means nor money for pharma mafia, no satisfaction in our heart it leads to looking for love in wrong places and people (we lost time and money), no satisfaction in our body leads to the sense of being accepted by the way we look, people die in diets and gyms, no satisfaction in our soul lead us to a feeling of being lost...so we jump from one sect to another, the result it's the stolen of our soul, SO PLEASE BE SATISFIED OF WHAT YOU ARE AND WHAT YOU HAVE, DONT GET ANY BETTER( if u know what I mean).

You're absolutely right, unforunately I discovered these truths just approx. 1 year ago. It was the time when I switched to the "minimalist" lifestyle. (I am an 58 year old man). I got rid of about 90 percent of my stuff, I live in only 14 square meters (this includes the bathroom) but I still feel like I have too much stuff, because my goal is to fit everything I have into one - albeit large, 100 liter - military backpack. Although I haven't reached this goal yet, I'm pretty close. And I also follow the "delayed gratification" method, because I plan to work for another (maximum...) 10 years, then I will "retire" and live off my money, but FAR FROM CIVILIZATION! Practically in the wild. Without electricity. And in these 10 years, I use my free time to learn all kinds of bushcraft tricks that will help me survive...
This is my big goal. Anyway, I already live quite like a wild man, because I almost always eat raw meat and offal - this has had a very beneficial effect on my health anyway.

I'm a long term proponent of delayed gratification. What you've said here is helpful & important for almost everyone. I've done OK reaching my goals by delaying my immediate gratification. I have one caveat: don't delay too long. Have a plan with a realistic timeframe. I'm 72 & some things I would have liked to do are too late & Covid pandemic put a damper on some things I still hope to do. Just keep time in mind & plan for what's most important to you in a long range timeline.

You are so right about delayed gratification, especially when you practice Minimalism. Since I don't have many possessions, I dream of my next trip and then save up and pay cash for it. 90% of the thrill in reaching our goals is truly the journey of getting there! So many people go on vacation and spend the first half enjoying the experience and the other half dreading how they're going to pay for it when they return.

My husband and I are switching to solar energy. He's installing it. Every year I save and order another pack of panels. He works for the Philadelphia Housing Authority. Last week he called me and told me he was called to clean up an apartment where the guy had a huge solar battery and 6 cases of panels. He had been forced out of the apartment. I won't give you the details, but we now have enough to switch, but he has other responsibilities, so he can't install all of it yet. My gratification will be delayed, but that delayed gratification will cover our solar needs. Our electric bill will become $0 soon. I also have a Yotta account. With Yotta you can categorize your savings. I have medical account, vacation, and so on and so forth.

Delayed gratification is like wine. Do you want to harvest a small yield of small & sour grapes the first year or so of growing or wait a few more years until you have a plumper and sweeter higher yielding grape. Deciding on the conditions and strategies to "reap the rewards" takes planning and time. Instant gratification can be sour grapes.
"Why zig when you can zag".
