  • I received the SOG Snarl directly from SOG for review. I wanted to look at this Jason Brous design because I knew he had some creative takes on knives. For between $35 and 50, you are getting a knife that you can carry on your belt or around your neck with the included break-away chain. It's super-compact and quite ergonomic and be careful, it comes sharp. Check it out!

I've been considering that Silent Soldier for a long time. This SOG version looks like a great way to try out the design for a lot less cash. Good job on the review.

I found that if you take a punch or small screw driver you can actually open up that small gromet hole so the chain can fit through

36 years ago, Gerber had a belt buckle knife. It worked great but fell apart. Sog should make belt buckle knife like this.

When finding your grip and finger position let the heel of the blade rest in the cup of your palm with index finger through front hoop

I have the Silent Soldier version 1. The model they copied is the version 1. If you carry it wrong or have big hands it will bite you. He put a small guard to prevent that on the version 2.

I have several of the different Brous designs (wharncliffe, clip point, Ranger, hawk/Karambit) and really like them all. Besides the better D2 steel, the newer versions have a finger guard which helps secure the blade in your hand even more so. No offense against Brous because he's a really cool guy, but his sheaths leave something to be desired. I ended up modifying mine by shaving off quite a bit, polishing the edges, and changing the screw/nut to a screw, post, and rubber gasket (to prevent the screw from loosening without using loctite.).

They have apparently fixed the small whole near the front, the chain now fit through it

I bought this little beauty. It has a very quality feel to it and quite sharp. Definitely worth the cost. The Jason Brous blades are very cool and very high quality, but Im sorry, I cannot justify buying blades running at $200-500. Thats just ridiculous...

The small hole is for a ring to put the chain through so the chain orientation lays flat and it provides breakaway for safety.

Great review. I am in the market for a neck knife and have been watching a lot of vids, but you are the only one to show how it looks to carry the knife. You think that would be a point to hit, since size and weight matter when it comes to something hanging around your neck.

if the clip comes off, then it can be modified. I’ve had to modify sog clips before, just get a hammer and shape it however you want.

I'm plenty happy with 9cr over the original D2 on the SS for stainlessness. Does this knife actually move through material? It's very thick, and it doesn't appear to be hollow ground. Anyone use this thing for utility?

wrong the main way of holding the knife is only one way and one way only the middle finger goes in the first hole the the second hole is only for holding it in your palm, that's how it was designed and the reason there is a a second hole is to eliminate weight. it's sort of like holding a gun and your index finger is like on the trigger. don't forget you need your thumb to help remove the knife from the sheath because it's a clip in design.
this is an exellent weapon really well made.

My neck knife cost about $4. It came dull, like the SOG, but I was able to sharpen it up. I only use mine as a last ditch and it's a little larger and has a meaner blade (using a definite recurve to the blade). It's sharp enough to slice through seat belts and cardboard boxes. I just hate spending a lot on a neck knife! Five bucks is about my limit.

so far i love it, i haven't cut myself yet tho it might just get given to a friend. its kinda how i judge knives. if i get cut by the new one, even if its given to me then its a keeper if i don't get cut by it within a certain time frame - a week or 2 then it goes to someone close to me. they usually do come back eventually and that's when they do cut me.

    • @EverydayTacticalVids

    • @richardmcginnis5344
      @richardmcginnis5344 9 років тому

yeah the ones that come back usually cut me because i gave them away in the first place. i have noticed that it did come with a really dull edge on it so i took it to the butcher knife sharpener the old antler handle round file that was handed down from my grampa its sharp now

Not a fan of the knife. Just odd to grip and hard to get used too. Belt clip is worthless because it's too tight and I pull it off my belt. Will use it in the truck with chain, if I cannot return.

      Trusty Patches
True - though even the rubber o-rings are placed on one side (to go under the clip) and not on the other side. Doesn't look like they'd be easy to remove - they seem to be secured to with some sort of appoxy.

Nice. At $50 this is a joke.Anyone who actually uses a knife in the field, IE skinning a game animal etc. Or for actual camp use this seems to be useless. I hate posting negative comments. But I had to this time. Waste of money as far as I am concerned. Get a decent field blade for less money.
