I agree with Iain; the pond attack is far more scary, if for no other reason than the shark looked so realistic in that scene.

The joke was: Brody's potential contribution to the scar contest is a routine surgical scar from an appendix procedure. Yet he forfeits, since it's not as manly a wound as Quint's or Hooper's. If Brody's scar had been the result of a gun shot, especially one received in the line of duty, I'm sure he would've played the man card and joined in.

I live in a beach town on an island. Every year, on the first Saturday of the season, our town sets up a huge screen and sound system on the sand, yards from the ocean shoreline. At sunset, everyone in town brings their beach chairs and blankets, snacks and beers, and we all sit on the sand and watch JAWS on the big screen...free admission. The town takes care of everything, it's great!
We all recite the classic lines along with the film and everyone cheers at the end. It's great fun, and has become an annual tradition. Some of the tourists love it while some others hate it because they get scared. Hahaha.

Japanese submarine slammed two torpedoes into her side, Chief. We was comin’ back from the island of Tinian to Leyte. We’d just delivered the bomb. The Hiroshima bomb. Eleven hundred men went into the water. Vessel went down in 12 minutes.
Didn’t see the first shark for about a half-hour. Tiger. 13-footer. You know how you know that in the water, Chief? You can tell by lookin’ from the dorsal to the tail. What we didn’t know, was that our bomb mission was so secret, no distress signal had been sent. They didn’t even list us overdue for a week. Very first light, Chief, sharks come cruisin’ by, so we formed ourselves into tight groups. It was sorta like you see in the calendars, you know the infantry squares in the old calendars like the Battle of Waterloo and the idea was the shark come to the nearest man, that man he starts poundin’ and hollerin’ and sometimes that shark he go away… but sometimes he wouldn’t go away.
Sometimes that shark looks right at ya. Right into your eyes. And the thing about a shark is he’s got lifeless eyes. Black eyes. Like a doll’s eyes. When he comes at ya, he doesn’t even seem to be livin’… ’til he bites ya, and those black eyes roll over white and then… ah then you hear that terrible high-pitched screamin’. The ocean turns red, and despite all your poundin’ and your hollerin’ those sharks come in and… they rip you to pieces.
You know by the end of that first dawn, lost a hundred men. I don’t know how many sharks there were, maybe a thousand. I do know how many men, they averaged six an hour. Thursday mornin’, Chief, I bumped into a friend of mine, Herbie Robinson from Cleveland. Baseball player. Boson’s mate. I thought he was asleep. I reached over to wake him up. He bobbed up, down in the water, he was like a kinda top. Upended. Well, he’d been bitten in half below the waist.
At noon on the fifth day, a Lockheed Ventura swung in low and he spotted us, a young pilot, lot younger than Mr. Hooper here, anyway he spotted us and a few hours later a big ol’ fat PBY come down and started to pick us up. You know that was the time I was most frightened. Waitin’ for my turn. I’ll never put on a lifejacket again. So, eleven hundred men went into the water. 316 men come out, the sharks took the rest, June the 29th, 1945.
    Anyway, we delivered the bomb.”

  • @gnc623

Let me defend the cage sequence. Gary mentions why didn't they poison the chum? Well, the poison was apparently in liquid form so even if they mixed it with the chum, throwing it into the water, wouldn't that wash it away or at least highly dilute it? And the reason Hooper got into the cage was because the ship was sinking. It wasn't a smart idea in and of itself, but like Hooper said to Brody, who at first protested, "You got any better suggestions?" If the ship hadn't been sinking, then yes, it would have been foolish. But the ship was sinking (hence Quint throwing Brody and Hooper life jackets before Hooper decides to go into the cage.) So at that point, all of them going into the water was inevitable, so it made the most sense to do everything they could to at least kill the shark before the ship completely sunk and they being all out there on the water.

    • @mrtaylor4279
      @mrtaylor4279 4 роки тому

I disagreed with your review on this point too. Hooper had no choice but to get in the shark cage. Rather get in the cage and try and kill the shark then sink and die anyway. Even if the poison would work in the chum (which it wouldn't) Quint was Captain and calling all the shots. He was against Hoopers science and relied on his own knowledge of fishing and sharks. Hooper did try and use some of the tech he had on board behind Quints back by attaching the tracker device to the barrel but using poison in the chum may have been a step to far. Also the events in the second half of the movie transpire the way they did to allow Brody to be the hero. Experienced shark Fisherman gone, shark expert gone. Guy with fear of water and no experience of sharks.... smile you son of a bitch!!!! As a side note Brody only makes physical contact with the sea after the shark is killed. This is the only time he enters the water during the entire movie apart from when he gets his ankles wet to carry his son out after the pond scene. This is interesting from a psychological point of view- as his phobia is rational rather then irrational. If he had entered the water at any point before killing the shark he would have died especially at the point when the Orca was sinking. I find it really interesting that they played an irrational fear as something totally rational. Great movie and a great review. THANK YOU!

Not to mention, a shark sinks when it dies. They couldn't poison the chum before they got the barrels into him, or they'd never recover the body.

The difference between Jaws and other shark movies is that I'm interested in Jaws even when it's not focused on the shark. From the Brodys, to the mayor, to Hooper, or Quint's marvelous USS Indianapolis story, it's a captivating movie all around where you're not JUST always waiting for the shark to appear to be interested in the movie. Jaws is one of the best movies ever made, period. Jaws 2, I think is a decent-good sequel - I do like it and enjoy it, and not that it subtracts in any way from the first one, but the fact that they do have ANOTHER huge rogue shark that is also a great white does make the premise seem a little less credible. And as Gary hinted at, the notion of a shark seeking revenge, that the fourth film would fully execute in all its absurdity, was actually introduced here. When Brody is on the beach the marine biologist and the dead killer shark, Brody says to her, "You don't think if one [shark] was destroyed that another one could come along and -" and she interjects "Sharks don't take things personally, Mr. Brody." The implication that audience is supposed to get from that, of course, is, yes they do.

What can I say about the Jaws what haven't been said before.
    It's a masterpiece!
I was lucky enough to watch it on a big screen year and a half ago.
All of those iconic scenes and all of those classic lines (this movie is packed with them!) in a theatre, whoa, such an overwhelming experience.
    I loved it!
Two days a go I did a rewatch, and followed it with Jaws 2 the next day.
When I was a kid I used to love Jaws 2 as well.
Well, now it's not as impressive anymore :)
I guess it is a decent sequel over all, sure, Sheider is good as always.
But I was really surpirsed how little memorable scenes it's got, in comparison to the OG movie.
I guess the helicopter attack and final kill are memorable, but rather in a more silly/over the top way.
Its' pretty dull character wise, tension wise too.
I now need to rewatch 3 and 4, but I guess I will leave it for the next summer :)
    Cheers guys!

I'm so happy you made mention of the novelization, which is far superior to the finished project and imho, could have rivaled the original if allowed to be made. Typical studio meddling of course kept us from getting this "darker, more grim" version of Amity Island, but as it stands, Jaws 2 is one of the best Hollywood sequels ever made.

People THAT YOUNG do NOT normally tend to have a lot of "back story" and "characterization" because they don't have much of a HISTORY yet, especially compared to the older characters. A little side note. The PG rating in the 70's. 80's and a bit of the 90's is way more hard core than what we get today... There were PG movies that even had random boob shots with women bathing... I know modern day feminists would explode if they saw that on modern family friendly flicks...

I adore this movie! I love everything about it and God I wish it was just a standalone movie without any sequels! I don't think Jaws 2 was bad, I actually quite enjoy it for the most part and would give it a 8/10... I hope they never even attempt to remake this movie... My second favorite movie behind The Dark Knight!!

NADS IQ Blue Thunder. He was also in The French Connection and 2010. 2010 I particularly loved, preferred it to 2001 but he may have had something to do with that. Or the writing, setting him up as guilt ridden family man - we didn't know anything about David Bowman. We thus cared more for Heywood Floyd, we also cared more for him though because a face everyone was familiar with by then was playing him.

    great review....
    i also recommend spielbergs "duel"
as u mentioned it at the beginning.
quints monologue about the uss indianapolis is more a tale then a true story
most of the soldiers died from drowning and dehydration.

    • @mrtaylor4279
      @mrtaylor4279 4 роки тому +1

Shaw gave a close depiction of the actual events of USS Indianapolis. Remarkable as much of the story was covered up at the time. His story was accurate also from the perspectice of a sailor in the water. He would not have known if people had died from dehydration but.would have seen the shark attacks.

Jaws wasn't Spielberg's first theatrical release. The year before he made his cinematic debut with The Sugarland Express with Goldie Hawn and William Atherton, which was also produced by Zanuck and Brown. You also fail to mention the real screenplay writer Carl Gottlieb (who wrote the Jaws chronicle). Lorraine Gary was the wife of Sid Sheinberg and Spielberg made a political decision to cast her as at Universal he was known as the son of Sid Sheinberg. Scheider did not want to make the sequel but was contractually required to appear and had suffered from the commercial failure of William Friedkin's brilliant thriller Sorcerer (which you have reviewed elsewhere).

Another fabulous review lads. But I need to point out apart from Spielberg, Dreyfuss, Bill Butler and Verna Fields all the other main contributers who worked on Jaws also worked on Jaws 2. Obviously Dreyfuss a big loss, but I don't see how he could have worked in the sequel. Verna Fields was promoted within Universal Pictures, however she had influence over the project, and Michael Butlers work on the movie was beautiful and just right for what Jeannot Szwarc was trying to accomplish.
Jaws 2 is a great sequel, and let's not forget John Williams fabulous score which is just as every bit as good as the original.

I like to think this was a rouge shark and not indicative to all sharks. Sharks may want to swim towards the boat due to all the blood in the water but if Brody and Hooper wo I’lld be swimming away those sharks would have little interest in them. Sharks are fish and fish are stupid so a shark wants food and the dead shark combined with what’s left of Hoopers body will hood them over. Also unless the sharks are close by they are not just going to show up immediately. I’m glad they did not have this scene because it’s just so much more effective this way.

I’m some instances I like Jaws 2 better the. The original. The first half of the original I loved but when it got to the second half I got out of the movie. Now I love the second half but I was around 10 when the original came out so for me at the time the hunting the shark scene was a different movie. The second one I was a little older and was just started to notice girls so the high school kids in this movie interested me. I really related to that.

That so-called "island" accent is actually more of a Bostonian accent. People on Long Island (near which the fictional Amity Island is located) generally sound more like New Yorkers (that is, New York City).
