Help! I want to use this set to make door panels, styles and rails, but with the raised panel and style and rail details only on one face of the door. The back of the doors will be completely plain, with no details and no back cut. Problem is, when I remove the bottom cutter in an attempt to just use the middle and top cutter, there is not enough thread on the bolt to tighten the whole thing back together. Is this set not able to make doors with a plain back using only two of the 3 cutters in the set?
What thickness of door are you trying to make? The set(s) in this video are designed to work with stock from 1-3/8" to 1-3/4" thick and not thinner. For cabinet doors, typically 3/4" to 1" thick, we recommend using our Rail & Stile sets here: www.infinitytools.com/routing/router-bits/carbide/door-making-router-bits/rail-stile-router-bits-for-cabinet-doors
Very tool Please have you made drawings for the project (pictures, measurements) I would like to build my living room door plus frame and kitchen door plus frame here at home. Please can you help me with the measurements and your experience.
Please see the description above for links to our 4 part video series on building a door. Each video in the series has a corresponding blog with even more details. You will find a link to each blog post in the description of each video.
Traditional mortising techniques would be used. That could include anything from a mortise chisel to a hollow chisel mortiser. The nice thing is that the groove for the panel makes a nice fence or guide for making the deeper mortise.
Quick question I have purchased this set and I made 5 interior doors but I didn’t extend the tenon will that be ok will they last longer . Thank you very much
While an extended tenon will increase the strength of the door, an interior door will have good glue surface that will make for a very strong and durable door. Extended tenons will add strength to either interior or exterior doors, and when pinned with a draw bore pin will almost eliminate the need for glue. This is ideal for exterior doors where a glue joint may fail from exposure to the elements.
I have never made a door, now I have an opportunity to make 32 of them, what are your thoughts on using the Shaker style set, just what are your recommendations?
+David Januszewski Hi, these are fairly straightforward sets to use. To give any specific advise I would need a little detail on your shop setup and project. Feel free to send us an email to customerservice@infinitytools.com and I am sure we can help you get your project under way.
Hi, do you mean for the Mission profile, 91-527 found here: www.infinitytools.com/routing/router-bits/carbide/door-making-router-bits/rail-stile-for-entry-passage-doors We do not make an extended tenon cutter for profile 91-527 because it is a "non-profile". You can extend the tenon in any # of ways. The tablesaw or the router with a straight bit or any of our awesome Dado Planer bits here: www.infinitytools.com/routing/router-bits/carbide/groove-making-router-bits/dado-planer-router-bits Hope that helps.
Please contact us on Monday during regular business hours. A product specialist will be happy to assist you. Thank you. M-F, 8:30-5pm EST. 813-881-9090
It should be noted, that these bits are the same as the cabinet door rail/stile bits, in that you should always cut all your copes first, before running the stile profile on everything, so you can cut away any chipout from the end grain cope cut.
Any of our standard raised panel router bits will work very well for this set. you would simply need to size your panel and raise both faces making sure to leave the appropriate size tongue on the edge of the panel. www.infinitytools.com/routing/router-bits/carbide/door-making-router-bits/raised-panel-router-bit-horizontal-3891
Also, I did definitely lose the order of all my shims when do took the thing apart to try to use only two of the 3 pieces.. So assuming I want to put the tbing back together in its original form, The instructions call for a specific order of two different thicknessed shims, but out of all my shims, they all seem the same thickness except for one shim (probably because I lost the other one of the same size). Obviously I can't use the single one as there is no corresponding match for the opposite cutter, so my question is, can I just use the rest of the other ones assuming they are all the same size and assuming I use the same number of shims on each side of the center slot cutter? And if so, is there an ootimum number of shims I shoukd use or does it not matter as long as the same number is used on each side? And lastly, do I even need shims on the outsides of the top and bottom cutters?
Hi, please visit our website www.infinitytools.com for the most up to date pricing. There is a link in the description above that will take you directly to the router bits in this video.
With the requirement to fit double glazing on all new builds in NZ the minimum Insulated Glass Unit, (IGU's) are about 16mm thick. These are put in with a butyl seal on the inner side and a wood bead on the outer to hold the IGU in the frame, Subsequently both window and door stile and rails thicknesses are quite a bit thicker than a standard say 42,, window frame. Do any of thee window or door router sets accommodate this move to thicker frames for double glazing?
stretching a router bit to allow an insulated glass panel in that thickness begins to to push the limitations of the router and the bit itself, and really is a job better suited for a spindle shaper/moulder. As the bits get taller and taller the stress on the router grows significantly, not to mention that the fence on most router tables would not be able to accommodate the taller bits.
Thanks for that explanation. I think I can achieve what I want to do with your standard set of bits, and then once the frame is together, deepen the rabbet which will hold the IGU. This could also be done before putting the stiles and rails together depending on what tools are available. Any suggestions?
Because you are cutting the same amount top and bottom of the rail it is fairly easy to find the center line of your work piece and set the bit accordingly. If I have already setup and cut one side of the joint, I will use that piece as a gauge to set the corresponding cut. Same method as for a cabinet door.
