That's a brilliant point I hadn't heard before - that Lan consists himself on suicide watch for Moiraine, which is extra tough because he's already been tricked and circumvented once in that regard. Having it happen again, while ALSO going through the effective loss of his own bond... Oof. Makes it extra wild that there were people who expected Lan to STILL be able to take on multiple Fades at once with ease.
Thank you for such a brilliant analysis. You highlighted points which I totally missed. I've always wondered why Moraine sent Lan, not to Nynaeve whom he loved, but to a green ajah. It takes place later in the books, but I was always bothered by her decision. Lan's love for Nynaeve would've been sufficient to keep him from suiciding. Looking forward to your other reviews of S2
why thank you. glad you enjoyed, I'm loving making these, it really allows me to examine every little detail in a way I never would. There are so many layers, and I'm finding this show just as rewatchable as the books are rereadable. look forward to hearing more from you as we move through together
Once I had got to the point of Verin's Big Reveal and then started a reread I always assumed that Tomas had been sent on a different errand and that is why he was not with Verin during The Great Hunt. I never spent any time trying to figure out where he was and what he was doing, there were too many other mysteries grabbing my attention. I'm going to have to see what clues I can pick up on my next reread. :)
I need to pay more attention too but my memory says that he was really distressed that she had simply buggered off ... someone will know and hopefully clue us in more.
Non-book reader: I really enjoyed this video. It blends the knowledge of the book and the adaptation. I still wonder whether Moiraine could have figured it out more thoroughly if Lan had just let her grieve through her process instead of stumping around and pouting. It seems the more he did that the more concerned Moiraine felt for his safety, because he showed no pause... Which made it seem that he could not function well enough to be of help without the bonding between them and possibly losing his life. And that I feel was her biggest fear. No one welcomes being pushed away, but it is what we humans do more often than we care to admit. She understood that he could take care of himself, she acknowledged that just before Alanna and her warders arrived. But could he do so with the understanding that it would be at the lesser from before they met. Verin tried to explain to him that Moiraine does not feel like herself in her own skin. I said all of that to say this... She just needed to be able to put on her own oxygen mask first before placing his...
oh huge welcome as someone who is new to the story! every comment you make here is spot on - and welcome to the heart of the wheel of time. communication issues abound and frustrate us as watchers intentionally. so realistic if we would just be honest enough to admit it! and isn't it always so much easier to watch someone else's situation and clearly see what they should have done? makes this all delicious. I totally LOVE your last line - she needed to put on her own oxygen mask before placing his. I'm giggling away and must remember to mention this in a video - brilliant! Moiraine is also concerned that Lan is not as dedicated as he was before meeting Nynaeve. We see all kinds of hints of this during S1 because we know this to be true as book readers. So there is a lot of her believing that pushing him away is better for him and makes him safer. Mat remarks so perfectly to Rand later in the Season that none of them are better apart. Perrin writes it in the letter. Everyone in this Season are confusing what will make them safe and make others safe. That final scene of the 6 of them atop the tower really showed that a team is just obviously more powerful than a bunch of people running around on their own. I hope you watch and comment more here, I can't get enough of the perspective of people who haven't read the books - you have wonderful fresh eyes to cast over all this!
Communication? Not in MY Wheel of Time! 🤣
never!!!!!!
