NR: I absolutely love, love, love your rewatch and discussion. Regarding channeling styles, I noticed that Siuan does not use her hands as much as Moiraine when weaving. She seems to weave from within coupled with the subtle movement of her head and use her hands only to direct. I thought it was very insightful when Cathy remarked about the shack Siuan and Moiraine met in as "that was her happy place". Because there is definitely as sadness in Siuan. I was about to say that they both seem less stressed there, but then thought maybe that's the point. So, I'll leave that alone. It always seemed to me that during the exile when Siuan said to Moiraine "It is done" that she really wasn't speaking about the oath of exile being complete. I also think Moiraine was prepared for Matt to come with them through the ways however, cautious because of his propensity towards "darkness" for lack of a better word. Her conversation with Lan in the ways explains it. And not from your discussion, but from other platforms, some equate Rand/Moiraine's failure at the eye of the world with Siuan telling her that she/we should go there because of her dreams. But I am reminded that Siuan initially tried to withhold her dreams from Moiraine. It wasn't until Moiraine said "what aren't you telling me" that Siuan told her about her dreams of the dark one being at the eotw. Notice the hesitance in the one second facial expression Siuan makes right after Moiraine asks her the question. Once she started to tell Moiraine about her dreams, it was then Siuan started to believe the dreams were /may be true. But not so much so initially. Thanks for such a beautiful space to discuss such a powerful adaptation.

how delightful to find this reply with so much to add
firstly, so glad you enjoy our rewatches, Cathy is a delight!
Great point about Siuan not using her hands and that little head movement.
I got this feeling of what it was like for her teaching herself and doing a lot of it behind her fathers back (in the boat eg) and the need not to be seen channeling. The subtler movements make so much sense.
I wonder if Siuan's sadness stems way back to having to leave her father with nothing, not even a boat, as a child. It obviously had a deep impact.
Good point about "it is done" having a deeper meaning too.
I have many thoughts about Siuan sending Moiraine to EOTW being the downfall Min predicted. We hadn't heard of that place until this conversation. It seems to me that Ishy manipulated Mo to get Rand there, through Siuan.
One thing I really love is that every discussion, like all the points you have just brought up, simply make me want to go watch all over again with these things in mind. Powerful adaptation indeed! Thanks for all this food for thought!

@@koalasedai You know both Siuan and Moiraine equally were given this mission and chose how to go about it. From my understanding, I'm sure their initial plan was to "row together," but the powers that be called Siuan to lead the tower's eyes and ears network and later appointing her the Amyrlin Seat. And as the Amyrlin, one can only imagine how brutal the management of a tower filled with powerful Aes Sedai and Black Ajah has been on Siuan mentally as well as physically exhausting. I feel that what Min told Moiraine about the Amyrlin seat (not necessarily Siuan) Is why Moiraine was being so hesitant to tell Siuan all that was going on with Rand. And possibly a little embarrassed. And lastly, the cold open when Siuan's father told her "A wise woman knows the breaking point of her line... don't push yours," and the practicing of netting would make us believe that she still holds in high regard his teachings. I hope, for the adaptive writers, that this is true during the coup attempt everyone speaks about. Her character is too intelligent and talented to think that she would have all of that Amyrlin reach and eyes and ears experience to allow a surprise like that happen in her own "house". I used to do a little deep-water fishing; I know exactly what her father meant by the test of a fishing line and so does she. Thanks again!

@@johnettadw1 may I ask if you have read the books? I only ask because you mention 'the coup attempt everyone speaks about', so it sounds like you haven't.
You are correct, they both received the mission, but took very different parts to make the mission reach it's goal. this is explained in far more detail in the books, but I think if you haven't read, then your comment makes it clear the show did a great job of conveying all the important parts!
I do agree, but hadn't thought about it this way - what Min told Moiraine made her more hesitant to speak about all that was going on. this could be a very good extra layer on what is going on in this scene.
I can only imagine that with deep-water fishing experience you pick up a whole level of understanding and I love that!
This is why I can't wait to do a deep discussion with Cathy about how organisations like the White Tower and the Whitecloaks have been structured and portrayed. Her experience inside organised religion will be priceless.
It really adds to the depth of the writing doesn't it?

@@koalasedaiI have not read the books, but some BRs that first season were brutal to say the least.😅 However, I read every extra offered like x-ray, listen to certain platforms with spoilers to understand as much as I could. Especially background info on the people, places and things. I really want to read the books, but a bit conflicted. I understand the inevitable need for an adaptation to be different from the book. I love this fantasy tv series. I just want to engage from a place of love and trust the writers to do the job they were hired to do.

I love your interpretation of these events and motivations. So insightful, especially without having read the books yet. It made me think of Siuan’s weaving as more fish-like, leading face first as she swims along. Moiraine’s is like a full body dance.
I highly recommend reading them. I came at them from a show-first perspective too, and that makes the book details and plots more additive (as opposed to the book-first fans for which the show can seem very reductive). They are very different plot-wise, but they are still telling the same Story. As soon as Season 1 ended, I dove into the audiobooks and haven’t come up for air yet. I just listen to them on repeat because RJ’s writing is so fun to explore and dig into.

How lucky is she to be sitting with an Expert on Forsaken Symbology for this conversation!

it is killing me to hold back on saying to her - ya wanna examine these statues closely with me huh huh huh?
but I hadn't noticed in truth until this rewatch that Lanfear is right beside and just behind Ishy's shoulder. It's time I do another deep dive looking at the positioning and order of them for clues as we know Moggy's face now, and it sounds like we will see Sammael in S3, and ... darn I gotta go do it right now!
