      ⚠️ PLEASE FUSE YOUR CABLES (right at the + battery terminal)
      Wet batteries, AGM, LifePo4, SLA, etc…
      All batteries have enough potential energy to do phenomenal damage.
      A good quality fuse holder and fuse rated a bit higher than your highest current demand.
      Even a NON self-resetting circuit breaker is an option.
      I have a 1kv 12vdc pure sine wave inverter connected to a single 200ah 12v LifePO4 battery for emergency power for my communications repeater gear. The most current measured on the DC side was 50a. I used a 60 amp non self-resetting breaker. (used 3’ length of copper #2awg)
      Thanks . Looks like a nice unit.

      Two points you are incorrect on.
      One, the voltage number to keep in mind of on the charge controller for protection is the VOC panel voltage. Which is 22V, so you are looking at 66V you should add 20% for cold weather voltage rise, so 78v. Still safe for your controller, but keep it in mind.
      Two, the 45A is the max amps the BATTERY will see, not the max amps of SOLAR you can connect.
      45A times 12.8V tells you the max WATTS of solar the controller will send to the battery. So 45*12.8 is 576 max watts it can pass to the batteries.

    The only thing i would suggest, is add a solar disconnect between the panels an your charger controller, that way you can disconnect them to do maintenance on the controller or batteries. Also, if you end up adding more batteries, consider putting in a BUS bar so its easier to keep the lengths for the cables the same. When you add multiple batteries, having different length cables changes the rates at which the batteries charge.

    The inverter's remote shut off is nice, but your more likely to regret using it like a light switch. You've got a lot more power than you need if all your going to do is run the lights. When you decide that you could charge batteries for lawn tools in the shed you'll want to add an actual light switch so you can leave the inverter on and turn the lights off. Treat the inverter shut off like a whole house power shut off switch. You'll be happier in the long run

    I started off with a solar system much like this. I had cobbled it together from cheap second-hand components I'd picked up here and there. Now I'm living off a system that's still very much like this one you've built, just expanded it a bit to run my house off. I still have my original system, but use it to power my workshop. I have other small units scattered about the property so I can go anywhere on my land and have access to power without hauling a generator everywhere. I like to have an inline fuse in my systems.
    PV - Photovoltaic cells (the solar panels).
    This is a clean and simple build. Well done.

    2 things--add a 100 amp MRBF fuse to the positive terminal of your battery. It would also be a good idea to add a battery switch between the inverter and the battery. Second put a 30A manual reset circuit breaker in the positive solar cable so you can cut off the solar if you need to/protect the wires. Love the humor!

  • @nunyabidness9257

    I am running the same HF inverter at my cabin-when I put my well in, I needed a second inverter because we would blow the inverter out if the well pump was running and we were trying to run the microwave at the same time etc. I dedicated the old inverter to the rest of the cabin and put the well pump on the HF inverter. I did this because I knew the HF inverter’s sine wave curve was pretty clean on an oscilloscope and got even better under load-well pumps are expensive to replace.
    So far the HF inverter has been really good. The well sucks out 1650w in draw every time it runs and stays at that level until the bladder tank pressure hits its 60psi and it has been great.
    Best part is there are HF’s everywhere and if there’s a problem I just take it back.

    Amazing description… you cover everything a DIY person needs to know. I bought two 200Ah batteries and will star with that to fully power my office room. Some time ago I separated the office room into an sub-circuit so I am thinking that will be the easiest circuit to off-grid in my setup. 👏🏼Bravo & Tks!

  • @pauljanssen7594
    @pauljanssen7594 28 днів тому +4

    Pure sine wave converter mimics the power from your utility company but it's actually better smoother power. The correct reason why you have to run thicker wires is not just the heat but the voltage drop is the reason why you run thicker wires when you're running a longer.

    The charge controller amps rating is the max output to the batteries. So if you have 3 panels at 5amps in series is still 5 amps but what the charge controller will do is bring the voltage down to 14 ish volts to charge the battery you will see 15 to 20 amps going into the battery. Great video!! I took my Ecoflow in a little bit different direction. When we had the ice storm in Texas 3 years ago, we were without power for 5 days. I have 15 solar panels on a grid tie inverter, so we were without power, and my solar panels were useless. I cannot tell you how frustrated I was during that time. I ordered my Delta Pro and put it in my living room and started powering up everything in my living room (big screen tv, lamps, computers, tablets, phones, internet, Roku, wifi, etc). My wife was not too happy with having to listen to the fans on the Delta Pro but it was not too bad. I found that the one Delta Pro did not give me the comfort level that I wanted so I watched for specials on the extra batteries and now have 2 extra batteries attached to the Delta Pro for 10,800 WH. I found that 4 of my 240w panels would keep the batteries charged to 100% daily except on very cloudy days. My emergency plan is to simply run extension cords to the refrigerators/freezers and other locations as necessary if the power goes out. I now have a glass table sitting on top of the three units with a faraday tablecloth on top to hide the units and reduce the fan noise and it is hardly noticeable now. It is comforting to actually use and know that my system is working since it is part of our lives now used on a daily basis offsetting my electric bill and not sitting around hoping all will work when the power goes out. Also, this method did not require me to hook up my Delta Pro to the whole house or run my Delta Pro in a hot and humid garage where my power panel is located which could cause problems over time. Very flexible.

    Great job, Keith. Solar stuff looks complicated, but like you did, its not really that bad. Worst part is in the figuring, watts, amps, whatcha gonna need. Again, it sounds more complicated than it is.
    Smart thinkin making the box where you can expand your system.
    Good to see ya back again. Looking forward to seeing you and cranky in more videos.
    God bless ya'll and stay safe out there in this crazy world.

    Nice video, but you forgot something. Circuit protection. You need to fuse the solar controller to the battery. And, fuse (or circuit breaker) from battery to inverter. It should also be mentioned to use a Lifep04 battery that has low temp cut-out protection for locations that get below 32⁰ F. Otherwise, the battery will fail if charging occurs below 32⁰. Discharge is okay down to about-4⁰ F. 👍

    • @FishinNStuff
      @FishinNStuff  Місяць тому +2

      I did forget the circumstances breaker. But most inverters have fuses already. But ive been told bit to fuse the charger too the battery because if it blows it will burn up your charger

    open circuit voltage (voc) is the volt you add up because then is the voltage that will blew up your charge controller in series .

      @hobbes1069 Місяць тому

      That's what I was going to say but you beat me to it. You could also theoretically see this if the batteries are full and not taking any charge.

    • @victorreece9256

      @@hobbes1069 you can destroy your charge controller if the voltage is above max. learn about it and safety first.

    I am looking to power a shed about 50-60 feet from my house and was scratching my head on how to affordably run power to it and just came across your video! I was thinking "I can do that" for the whole video till you got to the end and showed me the units already built and that they are PORTABLE and can be used in more than 1 location and now I'm thinking of going that route instead!

    Great Video Keith. I took a Solar course as part of a Refrigeration/Electrical Degree in college in the late 70's. Solar has got so much more affordable and available. This video show cases that. Like I said great video glad I watched it and may try it on a storage building I have at the lake. It will keep me from tripping over the extension cord I string out .

    This is a smart setup because the waves in the galvanized panel will provide ventilation to cool the solar panels. The efficiency drops off when they get too hot. Also nice and dry under there.
