The Art of Kintsugi

- Some four or five centuries ago in Japan, a lavish technique emerged for repairing broken ceramics. Artisans began using lacquer and gold pigment to put shattered vessels back together. This tradition is known as kintsugi, meaning “golden seams” (or kintsukuroi, “golden repair”). This bowl is our version of that technique. We took a bowl that had cracks, voids and nicks and made it into an art piece. Make no mistake the original bowl was a blunder. We used TotalBoat 2:1 and added it to three different cups. Then each cup received a different blue pigment. These cups sat waiting till the resin hit 135 degree then we pour the resin. At this point everything went horrible wrong. The resin cracked and many voids formed. We thought it was a lost cause, then we learned of Kintsugi. We decided to give it a go. We feel this technique added so much to the bowl.

I think you actually had more repairs than I normally do ! lol Bowl still looks great ! thumbs up as always
It took forever. lol
ITS LOOKING GREAT BUDDY .STILL WATCHING
Thanks Doug
Happy Veterans Day; thank you for your service.
Much appreciated
Happy Veteran's Day! Thank you for serving. I'm ex-AF myself. Nuclear Missile Systems Tech. I got to climb around on B-52's in the '70's. It was a great experience!
Thank you for your service also.
I don't make it down here as often as I used to. We're still watching, just more on the TV now. Another one that's just amazing. And these kinda salvage jobs are like your super power, brother. We should get you a reality show called "Bowl Rescue" where other turners send you their screwups and you turn them into functional masterpieces. Spoiler Alert: Nick Zammeti's submission will involve colored pencils somehow.
Thanks Jeff. I would love to do something like that. Lol
The bowl turned out beautifully! Love the gold, and your goofy sound effects. Happy Veteran’s Day, and thank you for your service!
Thank you Maureen
Agreed thank you sir. God bless you and God bless America 🇺🇸
Great bowl. Thank you for your service on this Veterans Day 🇺🇸🇺🇸♥️♥️🙏🙏
Thank you too!
Looks amazing! Thank you for your service Ken, Happy Veteran's Day!
Thank you.
Great project. Happy Veterans day to you sir. Thank you for your service!
Thank you kindly
I love this style of repair and how it’s that our crack (scars/life experience) make is more valuable and more beautifully unique. 🖤
Thank you Kristi
Love the sound effects - they always make me smile
Thank you Cath
I like that you rarely give up on your projects and always find ways to make something awesome with them, no matter how borked they are. I wasn't aware there were so many ways to make lemonade, haha
Thank you very much!
In Canada today is called Remembrance Day. Thank you to all the veterans in Canada and the US. Happy Veterans/Remembrance Day.
Yes, thank you to all that served and are serving.
You know, duct tape could be the American answer to Kintsugi. I love it like I love ALL your work, Ken. My favorite color combo is blue and gold, but that might just be my bias showing.
A favorite bumper sticker I saw years ago - Duct tape is like the Force. It has a light side, a dark side and it binds the universe together.
I love me some duct tape.
Beautiful blues, but boy a lot of work. Happy Veterans Day, thank you for your service.
Thank you
Welcome to Kens Autobody Repair Shop. Haven't seen that many cracks filled since furlough. Nice save, looks awesome.
Bahahhahhahahha Thanks James
Good evening, Ken. All the best to you on this Veteran's Day. 🇺🇲 Excellent looking bowl. Has a rich look about it. Spectacular.
Thank you for your service also Ray.
Man this one gave you a run for your money. I like how you fixed it with gold, reminds me of the time Bobby Duke fixed his accident. That's a beautiful blue color. Very cool bud
I'm going to try this on a cutting board that cracked and I filled it with the same color it was originally. But it don't look good. So I will cut it and pour gold in it's cracks/
@@MoonpieCreations yea especially if it's a natural crack. Thanks for responding buddy
Love that color and the gold. Great job.
Thank you! Cheers!
Love the gold spots from the fill ins. Turned out pretty.
Thank you Kate
And I shall call it land and sea. Beautiful
Thank you
Turned out beautifully and you turned all those little fixes into a new take on an old concept which I think is pretty clever.😊👍
Nice work! Thank you for your service to our country.
Thank you
Always amazed at what you turn out. I thought I saw the TACP badge on your spindle housing. Spent my time as a Grunt in the Army but we would have TACP's or CCT's with us every now and again. Always good guys to have around.
Happy Veterans Day my brother!
Thanks E B. I did 23 years walking around with a grunt here and there. Happy Veterans Day.
Yay, kintsugi! The gold looks fantastic with those blues. Another job well done!
Thank you very much!
I like you admitting that you are the President of the funnel club. Oh, and the bowl turned out nice as well 🌞
If there was a higher position I would take it. lol
Looks fab and I love the gold seams in it
Thank you Jeanette
Kintsugi is truly one of the most beautiful art forms. nice to see something like that in wood!
Also, the sound effects added are just amazing.
Thank you. I plan on trying this technique on a cutting board soon
Beautiful bowl, you got some patience with all the cracks and voids. Sound effects are funny. But you need to let your texted comments stand for a second or two longer, so I dont have to rewind and pause to read them everytime 😁
I stretched those cc's out as far as I could. If they were any longer they would stretch over the next set.
@@MoonpieCreations Hehe, then we will have to deal with rewind and pause for every comment, or simply not read them. Anyways, love your projects, and learning much of them 👌
I think the bowl is truly beautiful. The gold looks like sunbeams thru the water. But boy oh boy that bowl made you work for it!
It sure did. Thanks.
Came out awesome. Thank you for your Service Ken
Thanks 👍
Awesomeness. Beautiful colors. Really nice Bowl. 💕😊💕
Thanks so much 😊
Beautiful bowl, Ken. Take care.
Thank you
As usual, great work!
The Strong Shall Stand and the Weak Will Fall by the Wayside.
Hell yeah Gary!!!!
Another really nice bowl Ken. Well done.
Thanks Doug
Great looking work Ken!
Thanks 👍
Great looking save, Ken!
Thank you Billy
I love the sound effects and the sexy pour music. It's different from others, and fun.
Despite its issues, this came out beautifully.
Thank you Dellani.
This looks very arty, the gold looks like clouds. Great idea Mr Ken 😁
Well thanks I appreciate that.
The new technique turned out pretty good. I'd never heard of it before but once you explained it it made the gold repairs have a different meaning & I liked them 😉
Thanks Rebekka, I was hesitant to try it, but I'm glad I did.
Bowl looks great as always till next time stay safe
Thank you Tony
It's awesome! I love that you can take an idea for a certain medium & apply it to your own craft! Genius!
It's fun to problem solve. Now to try it on a cutting board.
Well it turned out in the end, Ken. Looks great.
Thanks Kris
Bro, this one really gave you your moneys worth, lol. It turned out very beautiful, like all of your projects you make. Thank you for sharing your time and your skills with us. Thank you Ken.
Thanks a bunch!
Turned out great! Excellent jog! 👏🤙
Thank you
Nice job. Love the colours. 👍👍
Thanks Simon
Gorgeous colour! Great how you were able to deal with all those cracks and voids. End result is beautiful.
Thank you so much!
It was probably a pain in the bum every time you came to a void or crack but I admire you perseverance and the imperfections led to a really fascinating and unique piece. Beautiful x
Thank you Tracy.
Beautiful bowl and the added information was really informative to novice thank you
Thanks Dennis
Very very beautiful. I 💘 love it. I love the 3 colours you use and the gold.
Thank you Margaret.
As beautiful as always and worth all the extra work.
Thank you so much 😀
What a nice way to repair a bowl
I'm starting to think I should have listened to those comments sooner.
@@MoonpieCreations live and learn my friend all we can do would be nice to be able to create something like that on purpose as think it makes it look kinda like stone or should I say gold in a blue stone
Love how this turned out. Great job (as usual)!
Thank you! 😊
This is way cool thank you for your service Happy Veterans Day
Thank you Kara
I love the sound effects and you should add more!!!
This bowl had a little bit of everything…. And it’s beautiful in the end!
Thank you so much!
@@MoonpieCreations you are welcome 🤗
Cool Blue.😎👍👍👍👍
Thank you Mike
Love the bowl.
Thank you
I love it !! With the gold
I have to admit I liked it also. I should listen to subscribers more often.
Watching you filling in all those holes felt like watching whack a mole. Turned out really nice. Well done.
Lol, Thanks 👍
I have experienced the need for doing exactly what you went thru on this project several times and never knew the technique had a formal name! Thanks for sharing. And here all this time I thought that stuff like that only happens to me due my complete lack of anything remotely resembling luck…
I feel you. I think this is a viable way to use those cracked blanks I have.
Awesome as always, no matter how you get there. And YES! Add more sound effects!! laughed hard the first time I heard them, love it!
Thanks Kathy.
Beautiful bowl
Thank you
The gold repair does look better than I thought it would. Now the Kintsugi explains why you spent so much time saving it. On a side note, If I had a nickel every time my ex said who's f ing idea was this I could buy a couple bowls and a cutting board. PTSD is almost gone. lol And I agree with leaving the cliff notes up a little longer. Old man eyes take time to read.
Haha, I find myself asking this questions very often.
I like it!!! Unique for sure. I kinda want to see one that was shattered put back together that way.
You must be reading my mind. I had the same thought.
Really beautiful bowl, Ken!! :D
Thank you Hillary.
Beautiful! I would love this piece and thank you for your service
Thank you very much!
that is so interesting to look at. you need to "Fix" all the problem projects like this!
I think it is an option for the few bowls that crack.
Very cool bowl, great job.
Thank you very much!
Hi again Moonpie, I love the pour again another similarity in our thought process! The table I told you about when I did the pour on video of course, I poured 6 or seven separate colors so I could get lots of brilliant color separation! I'd love to have a lathe! Keep up the great work and beautiful pieces of art! I love the gold highlights you fixed the bowl with it really is gorgeous ✌ and Crafters 💘
Thank you.
Ken,
First and foremost: Happy Veterans day!
That is really beautiful looking bowl, I really like the three blues. The gold looks like worms! Lol thank you for taking time to film, edit and post this video.
Thanks Donald. Maybe we should call it wormsugi? lol
I think it came out cool, Ken!
Thanks Steve
Beautiful!
Thank you!
lots of fantastic effort, well done I love it.
Thank you Richard.
Gorgeous.
Thank you! 😊
beautiful work
Thank you so much 😀
Great job! The bowl is beautiful. I like the sound effects. Subtitles are a little too fast for old eyes. Not a fan of music in these kinds of videos, but you do you. Thank you for your service!
Thanks for the input John. I appreciate it.
Stunning. Love this one Ken. I mentioned Kintsugi in one of my first comments to you and it's great to see your take on it. Worked very well. Thanks!
I went back and started to cut and paste all comments but time ran out. lol. I've been wanting to try it for a while. I am thinking of purposefully over heating a cutting board just to make it crack.
@@MoonpieCreations Go for it! 🌝
Looks great sir. Lots of trouble with this project. Have a great weekend ✌
Thanks, you too!
Beautiful bowl, Ken. You have a lot more patience than I would have with all those repairs. The shotgun would have been my first option. Take care.
Bill
I was doing this project on the side so it really didn't frustrate me too much. lol
Reminds me of my trips to the dentist.
Haha yes!
Great piece, good job :)
Thank you very much!
Using the gold to fill the cracks but also it enhances the total image of the bowl!!
Thank you.
Looks great
Thanks!
Double pour-netration !!! But on a serious note, this is great, Moonman!
Haha, thanks
Looks great love it
Thank you!
I like it and it seems to fit the definition of kintsugi. I have only seen it done on ceramic but close enough.
Thanks Linda. I am going to do this to all my bowls that get cracks.
Very well done
Thank you
Thank you for the awesome support. If you are interested in this bowl head over and check it out. moonpiecreations.com/product/the-kintsugi-bowl/ (SOLD)
Nice bowl
Thanks
THE BOWL TURNED OUT GREAT ..I LOVE THE SHAPE.GREAT JOB KEN.FROM DOUG
Thanks Doug. Working on those aluminum shavings now.
That's awesome buddy glad to hear that I know you'll make something beautiful out of it. From Doug
Would you be able to dust the cracks with gold pigment and then hit it with the glue? It turned out gorgeous, the mix of the blues was a fantastic choice, but you're going to have to charge at least $ 1000 for it for all the time waiting for the resin to cure.
It did take a while to finish this one. I think dusting the cracks and adding a resin is possible. Maybe if I had a quality UV resin it would work. Thanks.
Lovely bowl. It must be hard to see a project in your head and then have to mend it to come out as the initial idea?
I know it does for me anyway!
Well turned!
🤩❤❤❤👍
It really is! Thanks
Nice work
Thank you
Beautiful piece! Granted it gave you a hard time, but still stunning.
Thank you very much!
Great project! I always enjoy watching you create & talk about what you're doing/have done. And I 💜 the sound effects! 👍🏾
Thank you Darnia. Thank you so much.
I think the sound effects are fun.
Thanks Dave
I like the sound effects and think you should add more. Maybe some NASCAR sounds while turning. I also think the Logo Coins look more professional than the burn-in. Just my opinion, do what makes you feel good.
Nascar sounds would be good to cover any loud squealing coming from my turnings. Thanks RObert
Looks good, love the colors...the rework must have taken some time though!
It did, but I did it on the side of other projects so it wasn't to bad
Very Very cool 😎
Thanks Kevin
👍
Thank you Joy
