I agree with all of this, but in this instance, I think they were trying to go for "This is how depression has just killed her". Like, music really can go out the window with severe depression.
Although, sigh, not usually in a "I hate all music" way - more in a "I can't connect with anything" kinda way. You're right, Bella would need a personality to have been able to connect with anything but Edward in the first place, in order to then lose that connection.

The whole "Bella hating music" thing is super stupid in hindsight. I could understand if it was artists/songs that reminded her of Edward, but not music all together! Who the hell starts hating all music after break up for a relationship that lasted only a couple months?

    • @tiryaclearsong421
      @tiryaclearsong421 5 років тому +46

And the CD was pretty blatantly Hybrid Theory by Linkin Park which Meyer had listened to while writing the book. So hating that CD or that artist would just... put her with a lot of other people. And otherwise she just listened to Debussey and 50's rock with him. Still something lots of teenagers don't listen to.
There was a moment in the book where Bella tried to listen to music that didn't remind her of Edward. She settled on rap which she could hardly tolerate. Because the only music genres are classical, oldies, emo rock, and rap.

In a way, I *kind of* see what SMeyer's going for. Bella's clearly going through a patch of depression and when you're depressed, you might find yourself having a hard time enjoying the things you once loved or lose interest in them altogether. Then again, that would have required the author putting more thought into her godawful writing and me giving her an ounce of credit for something.

Hey Krimson, there is one way to _maybe_ make the story better, *kill Bella* . I'm serious, you have vampires and werewolves so why not add a ghost? Laurent presents the perfect opportunity, or better yet don't tell/show us how she died and turn the series into a murder mystery. Victoria's group are the obvious suspects to the readers but the human characters (and the police that Bella's dad is chief of) don't know about them. Both the Cullens and the Blacks become prime suspects, Edward and Jacob try to outright murder the other but Bella's ghost intervenes (only those two can see her). Since she can't remember what happened to her it'll take the skills of both a mind reading vampire and a determined werewolf to put Bella's spirit to rest.
There's also the impact this would have on Bella and Edward's relationship. On the upside Edward can't hurt her and Bella can be immortal without the drawbacks/ Edward's whining. On the downside they can't touch each other and the original reason he was attracted, her blood/scent, is now gone. They have to talk about something other than why they can/can't be together and build an actual relationship.
The possible ways Bella could have died include: Murder (Victoria's group, the Volturi, one of the werewolves, or maybe one of her human friends went off the deep end.)
Suicide ( due to depression, her dad has a gun or starving herself during the empty months.)
Or an Accident (the adrenaline seeking could have gone horribly wrong.)
And at the end, what happens? Does she move on to the afterlife? If she does would Edward kill himself to be with her? ( poison if you want to continue the Romeo and Juliet them) Who knows, but it can't be worse then the actual plot.

Not gonna lie, THIS would had been a far better idea for the Twilight series storyline then whatever shit Mayer wrote down. And it very much supported by the way too many ways Bella could have died in the books.
Heck, Bella could have just died from tripping over her own feet and falling down badly, breaking her neck in the process. After all she is so extremely clumsy that you would be surprised to learn how much this scenario ISN'T that far off from the books. 16:07 Any reason she thought up for them being shirtless is clearly an excuse for the fact that it's just so teen girls and middle aged women can drool over them. And Sam's downright evil in the book, slashing Emily's face after she rejects him and her being so traumatised by it and frightened that he'll either do it again or kill her develops Stockholm Syndrome and stays with him. But Meyer, clueless as she is said that was when Emily realised she loved Sam. A woman developing Stockholm Syndrome because a man slashed her face is not love Meyer. I know Mormons are a sheltered bunch but she seems especially sheltered. Apparently in her mind lust, control, abuse and obsession is "protection" and proof of real love.

I think I remember Jacob saying later in book 3 that the shirtless thing is about convenience. In book 3 it's established that the wolves often tie clothing to their legs when they go for a run; one pair of cutoffs is easier than a complete outfit. It's an obvious after thought on Meyer's part as this likely would have been mentioned or noticed not long after Bella fell in with the wolves if she had put that much thought into fleshing things out from the start, but at least she tried.

    • @fightingmedialounge519

Since they're old fashioned lunatics who think people should only have sex when they're married even though people can have sex whenever they want, complain about swearing even though there's nothing wrong with it and so on they kinda have the insults coming. And Stockholm Syndrome is an actual thing. People being held prisoner or abused by someone for so long they develop a bond with them as a means of survival despite what the person did to them. If Meyer had kept her sexual fantasies to herself Twilight would never have existed. Most people keep their fantasies to themselves and don't share them with the whole world like she did.

    Spoiler...
the whole werewolf thing is explained later in the books. Basically they aren't werewolves but shape shifters. Jacobs ancestors got attacked by a vampire and members of his tribe transformed into their spirit animal, a wolf. Jacob is meant to be 6'8 and the largest of the pack and to even be bigger than Sam but in the movies Taylor lautner doesn't even crack 6 feet it's why he comes across so small.
werewolves get explained in breaking dawn, a member of the volturi hunted them to near extinction. They are said to work just like a traditional werewolf in a sense of turning on a full moon.
Also a lot doesn't make sense because new moon, and eclipse were never meant to exist. Her publisher wanted more books from her so she wrote in new moon and eclipse. it was originally meant to be just twilight and breaking dawn. Though it's the twilight verse so a lot don't make sense anyway.

Look up the Netflix film Sierra Burgess is a Loser. The main character of that is the definition of a "nice girl." She uses the fact that another girl gave a guy her phone number as a joke to catfish the guy by pretending she's the other girl, forces the girl who gave the guy her number to go along with Sierra's plan to make the guy fancy her by lip syncing everything Sierra says to make it look like Veronica, the other girl is the one saying it with Sierra promising to get Veronica back together with her ex if she helps. She pretends to be deaf so the guy doesn't recognise her voice. When the guy Jamey and Veronica are kissing Sierra creepily hides under a truck watching and listening. Then Veronica takes advantage of the fact Jamey's eyes are closed to push him into Sierra who he then kisses thinking he's still kissing Veronica. Then later Sierra hypocritically gets jealous when she sees Jamey and Veronica kissing and throws a tantrum because her plan has backfired on her. Sierra didn't get Veronica back with her ex who turned out to only want her back for a one night stand. But Sierra out of jealousy shows a clip of Veronica kissing her ex in front of the whole school to break her and Jamey up. But instead of wanting nothing to do with either of them Jamey starts dating Sierra at the end for no reason. Sierra also plays the victim a lot and thinks she only can't get a boyfriend because of her weight and looks when it's because she's a manipulative liar.

When I was at my most depressed, I had auditory hallucinations of music - constant and loud and capable of making a coherent stream of thought difficult to impossible to follow. When the hallucinations had been over for a while, and the idea of music wasn't so horrific to me anymore, I started to miss music. A lot. But every attempt to listen to music only intensified my depression. It felt like it was mocking me, reminding me of a stable place that I wasn't allowed to return to, or - at worst - of a joy a wasn't allowed to feel. It became easier to tell people I dont listen to music than to explain how utterly pitiful and fragile I was that any song, regardless of kind or context, made me miserable. I'm better now, but there are still specific songs that I avoid. Namely, the ones that I wouldn't stop playing for nearly a week straight. It'll really turn you off a song.

Either side is neither truly good or evil but possess characteristics of both and having their own goals and desires. I shouldn’t compare this trash to ASOIAF however I think there’s strong similarities between the White Walkers vs humankind/magic and werewolves vs vampires. Both universes strive to meet a balance between life and death, ice and fire, good and bad. I don’t entirely think the werewolves’ metamorphosis reasoning is entirely stable and well thought out compared to a lot of things but it’s something 🤷🏼‍♀️

You know I just thought of something, it actually might have been more interesting if Bella actually started to date Jacob and while it has Edward come back at the end of New Moon, she doesn’t run back to him because she is with Jacob now. Maybe even give more of a conflict of whether she should stay with Jacob or get back with Edward. Make her even question if she even wants to be a vampire anymore because she actually has conflicting feelings over who she loves more Jacob or Edward. Like actually give weight to her choice where the books and movies made it blindingly obvious that she was going to end up with Edward and become a vampire. What if the books actually ended with her becoming a vampire and she still chooses Jacob? It would actually kind of be the unexpected thing unlike her staying human with Jacob or becoming a vampire with Edward.

While I do agree who Bella was going to choose was super obvious, part of me actually respects Bella for know what she wants rather than being indecsive or flip flopping.
Still, despite not ending up with Bella I do think we can all agree who Jacob ended up with was very very unexpected. I at least didn't see that coming.

The funny thing is, there are 2 kinds of "werewolves" in the Twilight universe. There are the wolf shifters from the tribe, and then there are the stereotypical werewolves that have been driven to near extinction by the Volturi.
The stereotypical werewolves are basically vampires. They are pretty much equal is strength and both create more of their kind through venom. The only difference between the vampires and werewolves is that the wolves have no choice when they transform and can't control their actions.

Damn, as a fan of FMA I just can't stop cringing whenever I hear the name Edward in this review, Because whenever I hear it I immediately think about Ed Elric. So thanks Mayer for ruining the name Edward forever too.
On a side note, Twilight would had been a millions times better if the Edward character in it actually was Ed Elric. And his will to leave Bella to later on try to commit s suicide would had been far more understandable too.

@@viktoria_pikovsky As a FMA fan, totally agree. If Ed Elric was the main character, he would've dumped Bella's ass after the first date and been able to solve most of the problems in the series in a snap. I know he would've exposed the Volturi fast like he did with Father Cornello. Would've made for a better story then this garbage.

No, ed woul have proably been killed due to the vampires superior power. Also there would be no first date since he has none of edwards motivation.

@@fightingmedialounge519 Ed fought and even killed homonculi, some of whom where far more powerful than the entire Cullen family combined. So I belive he has good odds against them. Also his alchemy would help a lot too, especially considering the Cullens and the werewolves does not know how to defend from it.
And yeah, there would be no first date between him and Bella, as he would be smart enough to run away as far as possible from her in the first moment Bella would show her dependent of him. Heck, probably even Al would not date a girl who is more empty than his armor.

They don't wear shirts because they destroy their clothes when they change without undressing first. And the books make a lot of distinction between the vampires' wealth and the werewolves' lack.

You know I was always curious about one question that the series never answered.....why bella? For any of them? In the world of twilight.
I get that Edward was attracted to her scent, but why date her?
He's been a vampire for a long enough time that he should be looking at her as food or maybe as a human being her doesn't want to hurt. But why date her? She's as flat and dry as a rive cake. I don't understand why guys that look like them are going for such a boring person. I mean what does bella do outisde of want to be in a relationship?
She has not hobbies that I know of, friends are a joke, isn't close with her family, and honestly she doesn't have anything going for her. Another example is the Anne Rice novels where lestate has a thing for Louie because he view him as unique, namely for his want of death but lacking the will to do himself in. Or in dracula where he thinks mina is a reincarnation of his long dead lover. Here Jacob just wants bella because....they were friends as kids? And Edwards wants bella because.......they don't even say. No personality traits. No like little features. Not even saying her ass looks great in those jeans. I'm surprised that no one in the demographic bothered asking why they liked each other. Just an observation.
Edit: to be clear I'm inquiring for the world in the book not the narrative sense where bella is a self insert.

I've been talking with a friend at work who's finished the series and he says that it's kind of like some destined bonding thing. Like, they're soulmates and they're naturally drawn together. Apparently the way it's presented has roots in Mormonism. I'm sure I'll have plenty to talk about when I get around to it.

Actually, I may have an answer for the transformation problem with the werewolves. Here it is:
Animals will high metabolism need to eat a lot to make sure they have enough energy for basic needs. If the werewolves need to eat a lot of food - vampire, cooked chicken, or otherwise - then considering their size, they would need to eat 3 to 4 times more food than a normal wolf. And considering their running and stuff when in wolf form patroling the forests and such, they would be burning a lot of calories. And burning calories mean doing activities that can make your body rise in temperature. So the reason the werewolves are shirtless is because they are trying to cool their human bodies down from all the calories burned as wolves.
Also I think the transformation only occurs with vampires they don't have a treaty with, don't consider to be their enemy, or they learn to control the urge.

    OMG THANK YOU!
I've seen so many people complaining that her werewolves aren't werewolves and her vampires aren't vampires, forcing me to defend a book I don't even like to begin with. There's been so many itirations of werewolves and vampires, not even counting how different they are from one culture to another, who's to decide what is or is not a werewolf or vampire. Actually, I appreciate that she didn't just copy and paste what they usually are and tried to do her own thing. Even though sparkling vampire is a weird choice to say the least.

Werewolves in the books are werewolves. The wolves you see Jacob become are just shape shifters. Meyer explains this in the books when Bella asks if hes a werewolf and is informed that they're a clan of shape shifters and that actual werewolves are terrifying and real.
