    Light Yagami in the anime would never help students cheat, it goes against what he said at the end of the first episode, "Only people who are kind honest and hard working can live in my new world."

      Maybe he thinks you don't have to be able to pass tests to be a hard worker actually it's funny that would make more sense if they were still in Japan because of how brutal their school system is with their high suicide rates and it could be interesting to think he was actually preventing suicides before doing the death note thing

      Exactly, part of what made his decent into madness and buying into the hype of being the God of the new world, getting rid of the evil- and as it goes him justifying and bending what he sees as "evil" swings so out of control since from the start, and especially when he "loses" the notebook, you see what a strong moral compass he's had his whole life.
      It makes where he starts, and where he ends that much more powerful.
      And you can debate, not just who's right between L and Light, but did the absolutely power corrupt him absolutely, or was it having absolute power that allowed him to become what he was deep inside all along, that he had to curb to societal expectations.
      I have the manga, I haven't read it yet, been meaning to start it soon- I know there's difference of course between that and the anime series, but the series does SUCH an amazing job showing Light's path in such a way where you generally agree with him, but there's a point where almost everyone's going to be "Um, ok buddy, you're taking this a bit far, rein it back."
      Part of why I show the anime to any and all friends I can is I find it really interesting where different people will see the line having been crossed.

    The scene where Light kills the man he thinks is L is such an incredibly important scene. It’s the first time we really see Light’s fatal flaw, Pride. Light is normally calculating and particular. He thinks things through, planning out schedules and traps to keep from being caught. But in that moment, when “L” starts to taunt him, all of that calculation and intelligence goes out the window. He acts impulsively, without considering the consequences. And he pays for it. He gives L a ton of information, and L proceeds to taunt him even more for being dumb enough to do so. It’s a huge bruise to Light’s ego, and it solidifies the vendetta and hatred he has for L. It’s a critical moment both for developing the relationship between the characters and establishing an important part of Light’s character. To throw that out in favor of a dumb scene where L just actually steps out in front of Kira and risks his life is frankly criminal.

      you know when is the second time that he fucked up and painted a target on his arse? when he did all he did to kill ray penber and the other fbi agents. that same day when the bus plan happened, penber was going to go back and report that it was imposible for light to be kira because what he had obversed he was a normal kid and didn't do anything suspocious. if light had done nothing against penber, L would have never closed the circle so much on him.

      The Death note anime? How can one enjoy a mind game between two characters that have no variety and are more the faces of interesting, yet in no way new ideas? I mean... It would have been nice to spend more than two seconds with Light bevor the story starts? There will always be violence and death and hatred. That is heartbreaking. Yet that fact is so obvious that I find it hard to understand that Light was even depressed by that. I get that greed is a thing. I get that power corrupts and that absolute power corrupts. Yet I didn't need the manga or the anime in order to understand that. What is the relationship between Light and his family? I have a hard time coming up with any scene between Light and his family that isn't mere info dumbing. I know that a lot will bring up the scene where Light's fathe lets himself be inprisoned. But it's hard to give a shit when that is the first piece of emotional interaction between the two. For the longest time we don't even know why L does what he does on a fundamental level.
      If one isn't itnerested in characters and just wants to discuss deeper of philosophical themes, then why not simply write a non-fiction book or a documentary?
      Too much of Death Note's tension depends on you not knowing what's going to happen or how it will play out. The problem is that such pieces of tension can usually never be enjoyed as much as it was at first, since now you know what happens and why. For example: The scene where Light's father pretends that he and Misa and being lead to their execution.
      History is written by the winners, yes, but again: Did you need Death Note to know that?

    • @nessyness5447
      @nessyness5447 3 роки тому +9

      @@samlerf the reason why the scenes between light and his family seem so " unimportant" is because light is a narcissistic psychopath. He doesn't care about anyone more than in the sense of how they are of use for him, so he doesn't care about his family's lives , he is emotionally disconnected from them. the only thing he shows interest in is his father's job and only because is useful information for him. And the same with the rest of the world, he only cares about what he can use, other than that he is not interested in people's problems or lives. So because of most of the scene with his family are from light pov, we only see what he is interested in. When we switch to his father's pov we can see how much soichiro loves his son unconditionally, he is a good father, he would do anything for his son, but his son would be capable of killing his entire family if that gives him a good enough benefit.
      Misa is a traumatized girl with a cult follower mentallity who is constantly manipulated by light and becomes completely dependent and devoted to him, she is cuter version of bellatrix lestrange, she is not mentally sane. And L got in the kira case for personal reasons, he goes to the extreme because even if he insists he just hates to lose, truth is that cathing kira became personal after kira killed a certain someone ( read another note for more on that).

      But with everything else that surrounds this movie... It just kills me to even think of the good parts of the movie.
      Because what they did do right, they did magnificently in some situations, and at least good enough in others. Which makes what they didn't do right in this movie all the much more frustrating.
      I think this movie should have just been called "The Death Note: A Death Note Inspired Film" or something like that, and didn't use the same names of the Anime characters.
      Just call Light, "Turner", call L... N.... lol.. Okay... That was a little too racist of a joke.... lol... Please don't hate me... lol

    One small thing: "Kira" doesn't roughly translate to "Killer". It literally is the English word Killer as written in Japanese (or technically "Killer" rendered in Japanese phonetic syllabary and then converted back to Latin alphabet using the standard used for native Japanese words); the "l"s becoming R as they are considered interchangeable in Japanese (and R is used in to represent them in the Latin alphabet) and the "er" being contracted into a Japanese A sound.

I feel like their attempt to Americanize it failed and the characters weren't as good as the original. • @Horvath_Gabor
      @Horvath_Gabor 3 роки тому +15

      @Haku infinite Okay, just off the top of my head:
      A decade or so after the Kira incident, Ryuk gets bored and drops the Death Note in the US. Some small-name-big-ego kid picks it up, and starts using it not because he idolized Kira or he shared the same kind of warped sense of justice, but because this made him feel validated and he wants to prove that he is better than Kira. He declares that, instead of a bottom-up approach of killing convicted criminals, he would change society top-down by slowly killing corrupt politicians and the rich, and doing so by different means each time so that he wouldn't have the same "calling card" as Kira. However, during all this he is constantly being observed and pestered by Ryuk, who always talks about how inefficient he is, or how Light could totally do things in a more clever way, so over time he becomes more hasty and less meticulous.
      Then we switch over to the other side of the coin: the interpol now has an entire division dedicated to looking out for and preventing future Kira copycats, with all of their members being required to constantly wear masks and their identities erased from all databases and only referring to each other using code-names. Not only that, but instead of a genius detective, it's a group of message-board dwellers who first connect the dots about the new Kira. So now, we have a specialized task force and the in-universe equivalent of one of the chan-boards hounding our protagonist, who is trying to keep a low profile, but his ego keeps him returning to the book to prove his "genius", and after getting more and more frustrated over Ryuk's teasing, people not really adoring him the same way they did to Kira, and his efforts not really resulting in any societal change, he makes enough mistakes for the police to catch up to him and foil his plans just before he would get to the point where he was about to crack and write the names of every world leader into the book out of spite.
      There. Not an amazing story idea by any means, but it's still better than the Netflix movie, and I wrote it in less than ten minutes.

      I didn't even watch the anime and yet I already know from clips I saw that L was SO reclusive that the very people who contacted him to help with the Kira case were shocked when they finally saw him in person, no doubt expecting some grizzled badass, and discovered that he's...a skinny, disheveled, sleep-deprived manchild with an insatiable sweet tooth and who's _possibly_ on the autism spectrum--though he's STILL a bona fide badass, of course. In fact, IIRC, L finally showing himself to the task force was meant to be as much a shock to the readers as it was to the characters.

    One kinda important distinction. You mention that Manga/Anime Light doesn't have somebody else kill L because of his arrogance, but that is only partially correct. The Death Note explicitly states that ONLY the person who's name is written can be killed and cannot cause the deaths of others. Light didn't know L's name, so he couldn't kill L indirectly through that manner. The main reason he didn't outright kill L himself is because his death would only bring more suspicion on him.
    However, the rules in the movie are ill-defined, so there really isn't anything stopping Movie Light from doing just that...

      Patrick Morris that is a pretty good description of the Netflix adaptation, the reason why Light in the anime and manga is more interesting is that he didn’t start out as a bad person, in fact if he never found the Death Note he probably would have followed his father in law enforcement and tried to change things for the better without forming a god complex and the belief that the ends justify the means. In fact it seemed like the Death Note itself warped Light into becoming a darker version of himself which makes his storyline quite tragic. In the Netflix version you can already tell that there was something off about that version of Light, but they didn’t do much with him being unhinged because they also wanted to make him seem more sympathetic and heroic, I feel like they wanted him to seem like this kind of bullied person who wants to right wrongs that are in society, but they failed to make a very interesting character.

The action controlling in Deathflix is a lot more powerful than it is in the manga; it seems to downright turn people into the Death Note user's puppets at some points. +IAmTheUnion True with Lloyd Alexander to an extent. I just read the original "Black Cauldron" for a children's literature class I'm taking, and Alexander fully admitted that the movie is pretty much an entirely different story from his work. He DID say that was why he liked it, but it was basically him admitting that Disney was not accurate in terms of adapting the original work. I'm not saying Disney's adaptation was shitty (I can't say that - I haven't watched it myself) but it was, based on what I read, not very faithful to the actual story he penned.

He was so disgusted with what they did to his work when they made Dragonball Evolution that it inspired him to return to the Dragonball universe. So basically because of Dragonball Evolution we got Battle of Gods, Resurrection F, and Dragonball Super. So while Dragonball Evolution is a pile of garbage, excrement, and vomit at least one good thing came out of it.

    OK, so this is just going off of what I've seen from this review... when L suspects Light of being Kira, there is actual evidence to back it up other than "just a hunch" basically. As far as I can see, the first few killings of Kira started with the school bully and mrs. Turners murderer. All L has to do is figure out the connection between Light and the killer and BOOM. And if that's not enough all he has to do is go back a bit further and realize Kira also struck at the school and it's more evidence Light is Kira, BOOM BOOM! Of course, one could raise the question of "what would make L think these death's were the work of Kira? Yeah these death's are strange but people sometimes die in weird ways right?" Yes, they do... and that's why you gotta think, "do these death's match up with Kira's methods of killing?" As far as I could see(from this review alone), Light mainly kills in weird and bizarre ways, again, all L has to do is make the connection cause, you know, he's goddamned L. Then again this is all going off of what I've seen for this review so maybe I missed something or didn't think of something well enough. Anyone feel free to correct me if these are the cases(or call me out if I didn't make sense here).
    As for you Krim... great review man. Heh, I loved the idea the idea for this review's setup(the actor playing Ryuk has a kind of voice that sorta goes well with comedic bits, but also can be intimidating when able), and that ending was pretty bittersweet. You were so excited and then the twist happened and it all went to utter shit(but the biggest twist of all was your ability to write decently while drunk/ high... ok I know the zoom into Strife's name was supposed to add to the bittersweet feel, but common, you can't deny that's another way it could've been taken). Overall, I did like this review, great work as always man, keep on keeping on when you have the time

    • @martinkolakowski2888
      @martinkolakowski2888 5 років тому +4

      There was nothing connecting these kills so there was no way to assume all these kills could be the work of Kira. In the anime/manga/Japanese live action movies the connection was the heart attacks but in the Netflix movie he didn't use heart attacks. He used different methods each and every time so there shouldn't have been a single death that connected Kira to the crime. The fact that L found him in Seattle was stupid too. Because his tox screen was clean, he was killed by Kira? He could have just had a mental illness and he hadn't even thought of that which was dumb. Plus anyone could have looked up that news online like Light did and killed the guy but L didn't think of that either. This L in the Netflix movie is dumb. In the anime/manga/Japanese live action he found out that Kira could kill by using a name and a face, he also found out that Kira could manipulate how a person could die and could manipulate the time of death too. The Netflix L was just working on big fat assumptions. Going on live broadcast proved nothing. He thought he could kill him but just couldn't but those were big ifs because maybe he wasn't watching and even if Kira was, maybe he didn't want to. Netflix L still didn't really know how Kira did his killings and was working with assumptions unlike the anime/manga/Japanese live action L who knew based on the media's release on convicts whose names were misspelled and survived because of it. Netflix L sucked as L because he did a Hollywood version of asperger's instead of trying to play someone who actually had asperger's like the Japanese live action counterpart did.
      Also William Defoe may have been a great voice but too bad the charcter Ryuk was messed up. Ryuk was neutral. He never had a hand in anything but in the Netflix version he goaded Light into killing and then he tried goading Light into giving up the death note. Something that the Ryuk in the anime/manga/Japanese live action movies would have never done.

    • @thedoorman6940
      @thedoorman6940 5 років тому +2

      ... OK, first to tackle that last point... I agree, but I never brought up Ryuk at all so that was you venting...
      As for the rest... Aaaahh, a fair point. Your absolutely right, there IS nothing connecting these deaths together. The only thing that connected them post Light becoming Kira is when the writing praising Kira is brought up. So yes, you'd be right... in any other circumstance. In this case though, we talkin bout friggin L man. Sure Netflix L was crap, but my point was he didn't NEED to be because there was an opportunity to make him not RIGHT THERE! Yes, there's no outward connection, but think of it this way... L in the original story was basically anime Sherlock Holmes, analyzing the minute details(something that Krim even brought up), looking at every possible angle because it Could be important. And in most cases he was right. He took notice of the school hostage situation as a very early instance of heart attacks around the world... out of over 1000 other cases. He had to DIG to find that shit. So I don't think it's unfair to say this L looking into the murder of the mother killer and bully are to far-fetched. Especially since, those deaths, aren't really common. I mean, come on, impaled by a dinner knife "accidentally"? And ESPECIALLY since that guy DID have a criminal mark on his record despite being found innocent. And once L knows what the mark was about, and connects the dots, BOOM! He'd have a much better Check for check-mate than whatever he pulled in this movie. Also, the bully, again, I don't think decapitation from ladders is common... unless I'm living in the wrong place :3 Regardless, I'd think that's still big enough and odd enough to check into. But what the heck, we'll say that death is akin to Light's second murder in the original with the gang member for the attempted rape where he was ran over, something that wouldn't be that suspicious(even if it really should be but for a possible justification to why L wouldn't check it out, fine).
      Either way, I wouldn't think this is to far leaps in logic to pin point Light as Kira, at the very least no bigger than what this movie did, and at least it keeps with L's character from the Manga
      My point is, L in this movie COULD have been like the original more, but it wasn't thought through enough. Missed, Opportunity :/

    • @treceslez
      @treceslez 4 роки тому +1

      @@thedoorman6940 It's still a reach. Those are criminals you're talking about, dying impaled by a knife is the most normal death one could think for a criminal. Criminals die everyday killed by other criminals, and since there was absolutely nothing connecting the deaths it is a reach to say movie L found a connection somehow, because there are many other more believable possibilities that you would think the best detective in the world can come up with to explain said deaths other than "God Kira". Movie L deductions were stupid and honestly he just came up with those conclusions thanks to something called plot convenience.

    Wait, what? A terrorist took himself and his cohort out with a grenade? That contradicts the rules of Death Note! If the death of the person the way it’s written leads to other people’s deaths, the cause of death will switch to a heart attack instead.

      Hmm, really old but just wanted to clarify this: Ryuk is not a Japanese creature. In every culture around the world we have what we call "reapers", obviously in the anime/manga they call Ryuk a shinigami because that's the Japanese equivalent of "reaper" but not because Ryuk himself is a Japanese god or something, the author even insisted in having "God of death" as the official translation because that's what Ryuk was after all, he doesn't belong to any culture. So that's something the Netflix adaptation does wrong too, because if I don't remember wrong Ryuk present himself as a shinigami and we see Light Turner reading Japanese mythology books when they could have just introduced Ryuk as a reaper, but oh well.

    Making light a geeky loser completely takes away the amount of power and influence he had in the manga. Because light was so high in popularity at his school, it shows just how much people are willing to sway in his favor, making him be more of a threat. Light in the manga was not only a genius, he had his standards and goals set and didn’t need to be pushed around by people unless it helped in achieving his goals. What they did with American Light really takes away his power because his status shows he is neither smart enough nor influential enough to sway people in his favor. He would get pushed around without any real goal set in mind. This light is not a threat, he’s a weak loser that is incapable achieving any sort of goals.

I believe others have mentioned this idea as well. I honestly can't believe something like this hasn't happened yet, considering how popular Death Note still is. (see the live action English dub versions to know what I am talking about). If the movie clearly established that you cannot (which it did not considering Turners plan when he was in a coma) the a death note victim can kill someone else and the himself without at least writing something connecting the two victims..then that would have been the most sensible option.

    This movie, the Dragonball one and so many others, is the reason I'm starting to think movie creators hates movies and deliberately makes them bad to make people lose interest in them.

    I read the entire manga series when it first came out, as well.
    Needless to say, I loved it.
    I also watched the anime series (which I really liked).
    But I NEVER watched this abomination! (for all the reasons Krimson listed above).
    This adaptation goes beyond White-washing bad.
    It goes beyond over-the-top acting bad.
    Light and L are so dumbed-down in this, that it's like watching Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Moriarty adapted into Loony Toons characters.

      You should watch the Japanese TV drama, its less faithful than the anime but its incredibly well done

    I loved the skits in this! Great job. Definitely one of my favorite episodes.

    8:26 I mean the fact that teachers rarely intervene in bullying incidents until its to late, and school literally does not give out punishments that effects the bully, I'm not surprised, if a teacher is literally there when a student literally threatens to smash another's head into a rock and does jack shit about it why would they stop it when it becomes physical violence.

    Listening to Ryuk's laugh while Light became hysterical is too infectious!

    The fucked up part is that something like a death note could easily go undetected as long as the owner doesn't go after personal enemies or declare themselves god. But that wouldn't make for a compelling series.
