I actually at the beginning of the month ordered a case of the Jack Link's chili I tried it a couple months ago this summer for camping and oh my God that stuff is good real Rich Smoky flavor in a ton of meat it's really good stuff! I haven't tried the jalapeno yet that sounds good.
Quick question. When you do these solo overnighters do you bring water with you or do you collect and profit? I’ve seen how you do collection and purification in videos specific for that but just curious what you do for the overnighters. Thanks!
I always loved a site with big flat rocks , you could build anything. Climate and water control, heat reflectors. In more permanent sites we would even build ovens. Fire on a flat rock on the bottom, three walls with a vent in the back and a flat rock for a shelf. Three more shorter walls with another flat rock on top. Once hot you could put your frying pans and kettle on top, your Dutch oven in the middle and you could cook gourmet meals for days on end. Luxury camping.😊😊
Shawn, I see your channel finally has grown to over 1M. It must be all the bacon recipes. I wasn't able to watch it because I've been in a hospital for months with cancer. I literally had no phone or clothes for months. Just my hair and birthday suite when the fireman pulled me out of my apartment paralyzed. I'm glad to see you are doing better than ever. Keep up the great videos for all bacon lovers. Cheers 🍻
Hey Corporal Kelly, this is Joe. I’m a marine veteran myself sempre fidelis to you and I’ve been following your channel over four years now I like to tell you that I like your content and keep up the hard work that you’re doing and I enjoy doing the store stuff like you do. I do Bushcraft in myself but thank you for so many ideas that you have given me and it’s awesome what you do and thank you for your service to the country also brother.
So much fun. I was watching your fire and was remembering. I think it was last year. You were super under the weather and I think you posted a video of the fire crackling and I thought I need to put that up on my television and sit with a good book coffee and just watch the fire. Looking forward to trying that chili with jerky
I live in northern central midwest USA. I bought one of these m.s.s. bags back in 2008. I've tried this system multiple times in temps. down to 20 to 25 below 0 F. many times. I always woke up sweating. I stayed plenty warm with all 3 bags combined. You're right about the outer gortex layer. It does not breath well. I now have little black mold spots up around the inside head area that I can't get rid of without damaging the gortex. The head area does not zipper close either, allowing a snake to crawl inside on a cold night if your sleeping outside of a tent. Over all though it's a very good sleeping bag.
Yay, it’s Corporals Corner Sunday!!!! Love the video, brother! Awesome….as always! Great content, great information, and loved every minute of it! We love and appreciate our Corporal! You rock it, and knock it out of the park! Have a great day….and don’t forget to eat some steak!!! 😂🏕️🪵🤗🔥
Great job as always! Love that you are always honest and cover the good and bad points of everything. Always remember that you can take it off if you have it with you but can't put it on if you don't! Living in the Southeast you never know what the weather will bring.
I still have that modular sleep system. It works great! I even found a second compression black nylon bag too. Great for camping and storage. The Gortex sleeve can be used to sleep on, or as a light duffel storage bag, your right about the moisture.
We lost a good Marine the other day , my Uncle . He got a double whammy,he was at Camp Lejune and Vietnam ( agent orange) . He had suffered for quite a while and is not suffering anymore. Remember Barry Waddell's family in your prayers please.
I bought two of those, 1 in cammo, & 1 in grey-digi. I didn't buy the whole system. In the winter I use a zero rectangle stuffed with a -25 tapered stuffed with a thin mummy liner. So 4 layers in all. I put my mattress inside the bivy underneath the bags. So warm that no overnight fire is needed in -25 so far. I am a side sleeper, so, ya, turning is hard without getting all spun & twisted up. I just plant my feet with my legs stretched out to the bottom in order to keep everything as I wiggle over. Thank you so very much to you & the few I watch who introduced me to REAL camping, & the cool stuff to buy that I have slowly started to aquire.
Last time I was doing anything serious was in Siberia in winter mountaineering. It got seriously nippy at one point. -60C which is about -75F. Near half the pack weight was sleep system. We were taking the easy way uo so no climbing. Still had to make a snow hole when it hit -60.C. We had 2 days extra rations and 2 days emergency rations so a day in a snow hole was just a bit of a rest really. We had the UK Army equivalent of these plus a wool blanket plus a tarp etc. It's amazing how warm you can get if you are fit enough to carry a 30 pound sleep/shelter system.
That is why I like the old German parka with the leg cover for sleeping that zipped in. It was way easier to manage your heat in real cold otherwise give me a poncho liner in my cargo pocket…
Gore-Tex is not as bad as a trash bag or a rubber rain suit IF you are not sweating too much but, once it gets wet inside, it breathes as much as a plastic bag EXCEPT... with tear resistance AND a zipper! The best feature of Gore-Tex is keeping in an incredible amount of heat for such a thin layer.
I've used this system for over a decade. Bought it cheap, but it was in great shape. Still is. I sleep cold and won't use the full system unless it gets down in the 20s or colder. The coldest I've slept using the MSS was -1°F, and I slept well.
Great video, I know from experience freezing my ass off in Colorado that the -30 rating is just to keep you alive not comfortable at -30. I always stuffed an extra woobie in the sleep system. It makes negative temps from survivable to tolerable .
The nice thing about infra-red heat, is that it is straight line. So with a fire reflector, you get that wasted heat that would have gone away from you back. At least some of it. And some is greater than none. So if you can do a fire reflector, you should.
Oh man, that sleeping bag was awesome. I had to go down to my poly-pros when using it. I stayed dry and warm no matter what. I remember sleeping on a hilltop in Grafenwoehr and waking up under a foot of snow, but I was still warm. Lol, we forgot to pack our center pole for our GP Medium. Ah, good times
I use to use the MSS system when I was in Ft. Bragg and Honduras. I would use the green with the Bivi. I would use the black for a pillow. I would also use the black bag on the bottom like a mat and then use what ever clothing I wasn't sleeping in as a pillow. I think the MSS system and the versatility of use was a great system. You could put the system together as it was suppose to be used and just sleep on top of it like a mattress. Happy Thanks giving to everyone.
Try the old 58 pattern Green maggot the British army had back ING the day? It was a great bag with a canvas bottom that could be waxed so you could sleep in a puddle and we did. Just try to keep the feathers dry.
This is another awesome video. I have been watching for almost two years now. And you never disappoint. And now I'm considering making modifications to my sleeping bags to do something similar to the MSS. I have considered getting the system. However, I have the skills to make my own.
Hey Shawn love your videos, and yes i have the army three pcs. system and I'm going out tonight on a stealth camp I'll be using the sleeping bags only because I'll be using my Snugpak Ionosphere .
Fun video Shawn! I never had that pruning/prickly heat problem with my Army issue MSS, from '06-'16. They must have upgraded the breathability of the gortex. I was an infantry grunt, stationed at Fort Stewart, Ga. The caveat to the newer gortex is it is NOT waterproof and you gotta "taco" or "burrito" roll your sleep system into your poncho to stay dry in the insane tropical storms in Georgia. I hope this helps someone. Thanks y'all!
Thank you Corporal. I have that exact sleep system. I used it in the high forested elevations in AZ. I’m 6’ and found the inner bags barely long enough using the hoods. I prefer a longer and colder rated sleeping bag here in NW Wyoming. I do like the Bivvy as it is longer and added protection for an expensive sleeping bag.
Was issued this for training at Ft. McCoy,Wi in January. -10 rating is generous, closer to 0 deg. During training high temp was -10. Guys who had done winter survival training in Norway complained about how much colder it was in Wisconsin. Vortex does breathe some but guys who pulled cover over head and breathed inside bag caused it to get damp and lose insulation ability. You were right about almost everything issued was hand me downs from Army or non deployed units
Thanks Corporal. That is one thing that I can’t stand, is sweating while I sleep, I’d rather be a little cold, than have marinated in my own juices all night. I have one of the 80’s vintage USAF extreme cold weather mummy bags. That does work well, and breathes ok, but do not get it wet or you are SOL, the only drawback to cotton and feathers.
The MSS was a great step up when it came out. Only problem, I sleep on my left side and am right handed the opening was opposite. A excellent system for any weather. Keep Smilin!!!!
Jack Link chili...Yes! Straight from minong WI. Had some of their bloody Mary mix and it tasted like liquid beef jerky! Anyway, great explanation of R&D. As someone who has made a few minor DIY pieces of gear, the prototype is always the most expensive on top of time consuming. (I always have to trash one or two before I get it right.).
No email notification. No suggested view. I had to search for your channel to find this video. And yessir, I've been a subscriber for a minute. But I digress. Having been in the Army we had those same sleep systems then issued the grey ones. I personally own both. Bulky but comfy.

Lucky you. I was Army Reserve 1987 to 1995. All I had was a mummy sleeping bag and foam pad. I guess combat grunts get issued more stuff than a support unit.
After having met you at the Georgia Bushcraft Fall Gathering, I have a much better idea on how large and heavy those rocks are that you were moving around.
Outstanding video! I never saw this system when I was in. Was issued the Medium Mountain Bag that was turned in unused when I got out. Poncho and liner, wool blanket added in the winter, was what we used. I did buy the Bivy when it came out in the civilian market, that along with a down bag and fleece liner for winter camping, I stay quite comfortable and haven't had condensation issues. That's a much lighter sleep system than my old canvas cowboy bedroll.
I’ve been lucky with the MSS that every time I’d decided to buy one, the price was more than I was willing to spend and the absence of having it has made for better sleeping comfort…
I was issued one in 1993 at Fort Drum, NY generally we only used the black inner bag and the gifted bivy. For JTTC at Fort Polk, LA I used the green outer bag with the vortex bivy. The gifted gift works great to let vapor out as long as it is clean and the small holes were clear. Taking an iron on steam holding it 1-2 inches above the high cleaned out the small holes.
I too enjoyed the MSS from ‘95-97! I thought it was so great that when they became available at some online surplus sellers I bought one! $150 and I’m loving it once again!!! I’ve done some winter camping with it at temps in the 20’s and it was good 👍🏻 Semper Fi!

Cpl.Shawn, I missed seeing your videos . I am as weak as a newborn kitten. Having survived 3 heart attacks last week I'm just glad to be alive.
I'm glad you're still with us brother. 🙏
Hang in there and concentrate on getting better now. Glad you made it.
@@erolkavlakverizon6112 Glad you're alive too.

After ALL of that buttoning up and zipping up and you just get sort of comfortable. THEN it hits you! Now you have to go too the restroom!!

Woo Hoo, got me a skillet. Insomnia can be your friend. Thanks for the tip on that Jack Links chili, it looks quite good.
Good times from years gone by
Always Outstanding AF. Always.

Expose the bag to the heat of sunlight as well as UV rays. UV sunlight penetrates and kills bacteria.

“Gear gets filtered down to the Marines “. Yep that goes for barracks too. Still have vivid memories of mine at Camp Butler in Okinawa 🤣
Let’s go!!!!! Another good one

And my sundays is complet mr sir great video 😊
Hello there. If it ain't raining we ain't training and where I is there is plenty of training.
Cutting Board in skillet/grill bag....Outstanding.
Thanks 😎
I have the same sleep system and love it.
That was a great sleep system. It was better than the og sleeping bags which were a pain to have attached to the rucksack.
Try the old 58 pattern Green maggot the British army had back ING the day?
It was a great bag with a canvas bottom that could be waxed so you could sleep in a puddle and we did. Just try to keep the feathers dry.
Glad to see a video on that military sleep system. Picked one of those up several years ago and after hundreds of overnights it still going strong.

Old school stuff still some great items. When I was in army AK 91, I had a thick down sleeping bag. Wished I would have had one like this then.
Just like that, another great AF overnighter in the woods.

More of a sales pitch then survival video.🎉
So?
@@ThomasSpearman-g3y so maybe that's the reason this channel loses views and not some mythical YT algorithm that hates him 🤣
Black bag also has a draft collar and the thicker insulation is doubled in the foot area.

Outstanding and awesome content as always. Thanks for sharing and taking us along.
Thanks Corporal. That is one thing that I can’t stand, is sweating while I sleep, I’d rather be a little cold, than have marinated in my own juices all night. Nice outing! Loved the gear you used. US military gear works for sure. Thanks for the video!
Shawn. Trafficking video, such a intelligent dude! Keep up the great work. God Bless you!
Love your food, just made a chili for a cook off...with bacon. So awesome
"marine proof" got me
Another great video I have that same sleep system I use at my fish camp every year.
I have the MSS, usually only break it out if we are camping up north somewhere really cold, but glad to have it when I need it
I keep one of these sleeping systems in my semi truck for if I ever get stuck in a blizzard for days and cant heat the truck. Fortunately haven't had to use it yet
When I was in Germany I had a body bag I slept in during winter deployments
The cowboy skillet is working good. It's a great little egg pan. Cooked some bacon and four fried eggs in it this morning. Low heat is all you need.
Thanks man. Sure missed watching you in action and teaching us new things.
"Outstanding " good showing of the mss bag
I use the sleep system in my offgrid cabin with no heat. I use the green light weight with the black and it is warm down to 9 degrees and maybe lower. All I know is that I was warm and toasty and my water bottle a few feet away froze over night.
Awesome video. I still have and use some of my OG gear from the Corps. See ya next Sunday.
I love my mss. Been living in the woods for the past 3 months using mine. Its been cold here in Tennessee the last few weeks and it has kept me alive

With the exception of it being big and bulky and heavy, they are in my opinion the best sleep system in the army came up with

Thanks for the video. I don't know how much work goes in to one but thanks for all the hard work
I use an MSS along with a Klymit static v mattress on my motorcycle camping trips. It's a great system.

My Sunday morning ritual with the Corporal and my cup of coffee. Life is sweet ☕️
Great video sir. Thanks for it and info about Sm also have a blessed and safe Thanksgiving

Outstanding video! I never saw this system when I was in. Was issued the Medium Mountain Bag that was turned in unused when I got out. Poncho and liner, wool blanket added in the winter, was what we used. That's a much lighter sleep system than my old canvas cowboy bedroll.
I admire all your efforts Corporal! 😂👍
I’ve got a couple of those four piece sleep systems, kept us super warm in just above zero temperatures. Definitely a great thing to have.
Take the gortex bivy cover off if it's not raining. If it is raining, you'll get more wet wo it, so use it then.
Helping out with the algorithm!
Nice vid Corporal!
