Quick question. When you do these solo overnighters do you bring water with you or do you collect and profit? I’ve seen how you do collection and purification in videos specific for that but just curious what you do for the overnighters. Thanks!

I always loved a site with big flat rocks , you could build anything. Climate and water control, heat reflectors. In more permanent sites we would even build ovens. Fire on a flat rock on the bottom, three walls with a vent in the back and a flat rock for a shelf. Three more shorter walls with another flat rock on top. Once hot you could put your frying pans and kettle on top, your Dutch oven in the middle and you could cook gourmet meals for days on end. Luxury camping.😊😊

Shawn, I see your channel finally has grown to over 1M. It must be all the bacon recipes. I wasn't able to watch it because I've been in a hospital for months with cancer. I literally had no phone or clothes for months. Just my hair and birthday suite when the fireman pulled me out of my apartment paralyzed.

I live in northern central midwest USA. I bought one of these m.s.s. bags back in 2008. I've tried this system multiple times in temps. down to 20 to 25 below 0 F. many times. I always woke up sweating. I stayed plenty warm with all 3 bags combined. You're right about the outer gortex layer. It does not breath well. I now have little black mold spots up around the inside head area that I can't get rid of without damaging the gortex. The head area does not zipper close either, allowing a snake to crawl inside on a cold night if your sleeping outside of a tent. Over all though it's a very good sleeping bag.

    I bought two of those, 1 in cammo, & 1 in grey-digi.
I didn't buy the whole system. In the winter I use a zero rectangle stuffed with a -25 tapered stuffed with a thin mummy liner. So 4 layers in all. I put my mattress inside the bivy underneath the bags.
So warm that no overnight fire is needed in -25 so far.
I am a side sleeper, so, ya, turning is hard without getting all spun & twisted up. I just plant my feet with my legs stretched out to the bottom in order to keep everything as I wiggle over.
Thank you so very much to you & the few I watch who introduced me to REAL camping, & the cool stuff to buy that I have slowly started to aquire.

Last time I was doing anything serious was in Siberia in winter mountaineering. It got seriously nippy at one point. -60C which is about -75F. Near half the pack weight was sleep system. We were taking the easy way uo so no climbing. Still had to make a snow hole when it hit -60.C. We had 2 days extra rations and 2 days emergency rations so a day in a snow hole was just a bit of a rest really. We had the UK Army equivalent of these plus a wool blanket plus a tarp etc. It's amazing how warm you can get if you are fit enough to carry a 30 pound sleep/shelter system.

Gore-Tex is not as bad as a trash bag or a rubber rain suit IF you are not sweating too much but, once it gets wet inside, it breathes as much as a plastic bag EXCEPT... with tear resistance AND a zipper!
The best feature of Gore-Tex is keeping in an incredible amount of heat for such a thin layer.

I've used this system for over a decade. Bought it cheap, but it was in great shape. Still is. I sleep cold and won't use the full system unless it gets down in the 20s or colder. The coldest I've slept using the MSS was -1°F, and I slept well.

Great video, I know from experience freezing my ass off in Colorado that the -30 rating is just to keep you alive not comfortable at -30. I always stuffed an extra woobie in the sleep system. It makes negative temps from survivable to tolerable .

  • @jeromethiel4323
    @jeromethiel4323 3 дні тому +2

The nice thing about infra-red heat, is that it is straight line. So with a fire reflector, you get that wasted heat that would have gone away from you back. At least some of it. And some is greater than none. So if you can do a fire reflector, you should.

I use to use the MSS system when I was in Ft. Bragg and Honduras. I would use the green with the Bivi. I would use the black for a pillow. I would also use the black bag on the bottom like a mat and then use what ever clothing I wasn't sleeping in as a pillow. I think the MSS system and the versatility of use was a great system. You could put the system together as it was suppose to be used and just sleep on top of it like a mattress. Happy Thanks giving to everyone.

Fun video Shawn! I never had that pruning/prickly heat problem with my Army issue MSS, from '06-'16. They must have upgraded the breathability of the gortex. I was an infantry grunt, stationed at Fort Stewart, Ga. The caveat to the newer gortex is it is NOT waterproof and you gotta "taco" or "burrito" roll your sleep system into your poncho to stay dry in the insane tropical storms in Georgia. I hope this helps someone. Thanks y'all!

Thank you Corporal. I have that exact sleep system. I used it in the high forested elevations in AZ. I’m 6’ and found the inner bags barely long enough using the hoods. I prefer a longer and colder rated sleeping bag here in NW Wyoming. I do like the Bivvy as it is longer and added protection for an expensive sleeping bag.

Was issued this for training at Ft. McCoy,Wi in January. -10 rating is generous, closer to 0 deg. During training high temp was -10. Guys who had done winter survival training in Norway complained about how much colder it was in Wisconsin. Vortex does breathe some but guys who pulled cover over head and breathed inside bag caused it to get damp and lose insulation ability. You were right about almost everything issued was hand me downs from Army or non deployed units

I have one of the 80’s vintage USAF extreme cold weather mummy bags. That does work well, and breathes ok, but do not get it wet or you are SOL, the only drawback to cotton and feathers.

Outstanding video! I never saw this system when I was in. Was issued the Medium Mountain Bag that was turned in unused when I got out. Poncho and liner, wool blanket added in the winter, was what we used. I did buy the Bivy when it came out in the civilian market, that along with a down bag and fleece liner for winter camping, I stay quite comfortable and haven't had condensation issues. That's a much lighter sleep system than my old canvas cowboy bedroll.

I’ve got a couple of those four piece sleep systems, kept us super warm in just above zero temperatures. Definitely a great thing to have.

Take the gortex bivy cover off if it's not raining. If it is raining, you'll get more wet wo it, so use it then.

I’ve been lucky with the MSS that every time I’d decided to buy one, the price was more than I was willing to spend and the absence of having it has made for better sleeping comfort…

I was issued one in 1993 at Fort Drum, NY generally we only used the black inner bag and the gifted bivy. For JTTC at Fort Polk, LA I used the green outer bag with the vortex bivy. The gifted gift works great to let vapor out as long as it is clean and the small holes were clear. Taking an iron on steam holding it 1-2 inches above the high cleaned out the small holes.

I too enjoyed the MSS from ‘95-97! I thought it was so great that when they became available at some online surplus sellers I bought one! $150 and I’m loving it once again!!! I’ve done some winter camping with it at temps in the 20’s and it was good 👍🏻 Semper Fi!
