Good vid man. When I compare the shelters you guys had with the poncho shelters we had in the British Army, it might be cosier but it looks like a lot of gear to set up. With some practice, we could be under cover within 90 seconds or less: Poncho, 2 bungees & I used to keep 6 pegs in my roll. Always had 550 on the corner loops anyway, so wound the peg, into the ground, fast & easy. Brit Compo Rations were tinned back then. Heavy but tasty though. Much better that the flat pack meals of today but weight was an issue for sure. So we used to carry our own add-ons as you probably did too. I'd still prefer the poncho/tarp approach to the 2 Man Shelter myself but then again, these days & prefer a hammock to a tent. LOL Semper Fi from a Limey & keep your chin up feller 👍
Civil war infantry had white canvas shelter halves without the triangular ends. They buttoned up at the top. Triangular ends were brought in about 1888. Growing up in the 70s we had access to WWII field gear for scouts, etc. Although scouts discouraged using military equipment (even wwii era). I was in ROTC 86-89. Joined the NAVY. Then was sent ashore during ODS (language skills) I was only able to use the equipment you used today during my ROTC time. All the rest of my time ashore I had to beg/ borrow from Brits, and during Kosovo Germans. So mixing and matching is a pretty natural thing for me when I have to go out. Thanks. The MRE brought back memories too.
Always enjoy your stuff. Don't ever change your path only sometimes your direction. Been watching with my youngest boy of 4 boys. It's clock work. Sunday's are ..... first God second ..... our man Corporals Corner!! You got me into Bushcraft. Still doing it here in Ohio!!! Thanks Brother. Same Gen as you...
I did misery in the woods as a Boy Scout in the '80's. We used packboard backpacks, canvas shelter-half tents with wooden tent poles and steel tent pegs, and heavy mummy sleeping bags to camp under freezing conditions. I know, I've got multiple Polar Bear badges.
Nice video! I was in the Dutch army in 1997 till 2000. Some stuff you showed or told are very recognisable. I just collected my old gear together for fun and to show it my teenager kids. Even found the 20 kg bulletproof vest I used. I used a different tent. It was a POS (you can find some video about it on YT). It was heavy and unpractical, so we end up using the poncho als tarp instead. Fun to collect this stuff. Makes me feel nostalgic
The seat is the main reason I carry an entrenching tool. It is a great multi purpose piece of gear, but the seat makes it worth its weight in gold when you you have been working hard around camp all day, and it sure as hell beats sitting on the ground
A shelter half memory. My buddy and I assembled our shelter. As you can see, there is no mosquito netting provided. Since it was hot, I slept on top of my sleeping bag with my sleeves rolled down, my black leather glove shells on and my hat pulled over my face. We were wearing the OD BDU's which was right before the woodland pattern. In the morning, I woke up on my back with my knees up and my boots planted on the ground. The pant material was so thin that the mosquitos feasted on my upper legs all night . I was greeted to multiple mosquito bites on my thighs and the sound of buzzing and burping mosquitos hanging on the sloping shelter ceiling!😶
Proof that time passes quickly. After 22 years and 3 months in the Air Force I got out- in 2003. Feeling it for sure. I like that you still look good in uniform.
I was in Okinawa in 87 and we didn't even use shelter halves it was so hot and humid. Almost all of that gear looks like the same stuff we were using then.
Mate from England, don’t pay attention to the knockers. There sat at home with a keyboard… We all did our thing in our own regiments at the time with what they gave us and we cracked on … We saw you yanks in Germany .. we took the piss because you had all the best gear (but no idea 😊) and were envious. But always in a respectful way mate which was reciprocated. Enjoy your videos mate ….. Do what you do 🫡🏴🇺🇸
Inspiration has struck, THANK YOU. We are finishing up 72 hour kits to be kept at school with our young-un's. Emergency kits are encouraged by the Dep Ed (Department of Education) in the Philippines. Quality MREs are difficult to obtain here. We did find Hormel chili, both with and without beans at S&R Wholesale. I am now thinking cook some elbow macaroni, add a can of the chili w/no beans and top with pimiento Cheez Whiz for those who desire it. Yes, we know that Cheez Whiz is NOT health food but it is on of those products that our youngsters ask for. It is in the kits for use on crackers so why not simply place a larger size jar in the kit. I believe we have a new camp meal that will be a winner!
Man this brings back so many memories... My squad leader was ex-infantry and did field training in the infantry style; 2quart, e-tool, sleeping under a poncho, all of it. This was around 2000. I don't miss it, but looking back I kind of enjoyed the change of pace from our office work.
Brother, we were using the same gear you have on, in the army in Germany in 1985-86. Although in 1983-84 at Fort Polk, LA, we had the old two piece steel pots instead of the kevlars. Great nostalgia trip 🫡
I had a 1970 AMC Javelin. It had a body rattle that drove me crazy. Fixing the back passenger side window regulator, I found an old folding military shovel in the side panel, the body rattle. The Javelin is long gone, the shovel I still have.
corporal this is unironically VERY close to my camping setup that ive used for years. im not an old school military guy...i just like cheap and good stuff!
As a US Army Infantry veteran from the early 80s we were issued much the same A.L.I.C.E gear. In 84 while serving in West Germany we made the transition from C-rations to the first generation M. R.Es and the M-1 steel helmets to the Kevlar ones. With the c-rats you brought your own Tabasco sauce to the field. 🇺🇸😌
82-85 Army here. Yep, pretty much same gear as we used. Still preffered the old c-rats to the mre's. Those things were horrible! The scrambled eggs with ham in the c-rats were my fav's.
I saw a video here on UA-cam where a guy got his Vietnam issued helmet back because his son tracked it down in England from a reenactor. The liner still had his name written on it. There's another video online where a guy found his grandfather's issued M1 Garand from WW2 using the original inventory and issue paperwork. He gave his dad that rifle on video.
I was in the Corps 89-93 and I remember the dehydrated pork and beef patty and dehydrated fruit. MRE's 29:48 have came a long way since then. Semper Fi!!!
Been in the Seabee’s since ‘03. Seems like we got all your old gear when the Corps upgraded! We did adopt the TCOP tent, thankfully, versus the shelter halves. But pretty much all that gear you sported in ‘97 was my issue in 2003. We had the MTV, not the flak vest though. We also had the M16 A1’s that were fully automatic vs your A2 with the 3 round burst. Mostly because we did not have machine guns at the squad level. We only had them in static defensive positions or vehicle mounted (240b, M2, MK19). Good video!
First! Another excellent vid. Man, you really nail the 90s in those military gear videos. Have you ever thought about going on one of those survival shows? You and those Meals Rejected by Everybody....
I ate C Rats and MRE in the Army, never understood why the had diagram of a rock or something, then I realized Marines also ate MREs and understood. Crayons in MREs
Corporal I learned something new today I bought a woobie because of watching your videos and now I know how to use it because of your videos thank you corporal
I still have a case of 1st Gen MREs, and like the ark of the covenant, it is best not to open it. Welcome to the 1980s army where you sleep in a tent from the Civil War. The boots destroyed your feet, and you received a clothing allowance about equal to a pair of socks every other year.
Dad had stories of his unit on the Outpost Carson, Vegas, and Reno, while holding off 4000 Chinese bad boys. The great 2-D-5 marines... thanks for the stories dad!
Did you know that the fuel tablets? In the UK. Can now get you up to 2 years in prison. For just possessing them. Because it turns out you can make explosives out of them. I've noticed that the old gear certainly lasts a lot longer. I've got kit made in the 60s.50s and 40s Our club has a 1940s Tent? Used by the US infantry. We used to use it as a store's tent. It's the one with the little window in the door Flap I'd used it in some pretty bad weather and it never leak. at all
That's some crazy shite! I've got some old friends in the UK from my military days. They say it's really getting ridiculous with all the crazy restrictions there; in Australia as well. We don't like being defenseless here. Best Wishes.
Hey Corporal Kelly, I have gotten both crushed red pepper and Tabasco in the same case of MRE. There’s no more little glass bottles and it comes in what appears to be the same thing as a ketchup packet. We were typically provided with Texas Pete hot sauce as well in a big bottle, DFAC would provide them. I always fought with my buggy over the coffee and tabasco sauce. We collected it from everyone who would give it up. This was in 2010
Hi from Over the pond, where the peasants are revolting right now! I joined in 1972 and I can tell you your portrayal of yesteryear is hi tech compared to what we had back then... No wonder I have arthritis in my spine and knees.. Enjoyed the vid.. Thanks and keep safe mate.
Good to watch you again... Corporal, is like meeting again and old friend. Glad you still uploading videos. Salute! :) I mostly enjoyed your shelter building videos, but also the ones with just a camp fire and talk where you gave your point of view of the things happening in the world or advise to youngers... great stuff, because you are a reasonable, and practical person. Kudos! (the ones reviewing gear or testing techniques or so are great too )
Love that old school gear. I do appreciate you for showing some of that on this video. I served in the US Army from 1978-2000. I'm currently have lots of that old school gear that really works great for me in all types of situations. Salute and respect.
Stories about crazier things happening. My dad had a coworker that went fishing at a campground here in Virginia. Lost one of his poles in the lake. My family was scheduled to go to the same campground two weeks later. Dad’s coworker kept ribbing him “While you’re down there see if you can’t find my fishing pole”. It was our third day camping and my father and I went fishing because the weather finally cleared up. Yeahhhhh we fished a rod out. Thinking it would be a hilarious joke, we put the rod on the coworkers front porch with a card saying “You’re welcome” when we came home. Coworker called my father that night and was shocked because it really was the rod he lost….then proceeded to tell my father he could have at least had the decency to clean the rod up before he returned it😂
i’ve been incredibly busy the past 9 months- which means i have about 9 months worth of your videos to catch up on. cheers corporal sir, and thank you for continue to teach us after all of these years. may many more come
I don't get it. I have yet to not be notified. Love watching your videos. As soon as I beat this cancer and get my back fixed I'm going to get back out in the woods myself. Thanks for you're dedication and your service. I was in from 82 to 87 and Army airborne. 82nd all the way baby. Most of what you have is exactly what we had then. Great memories. Thank you.
I went to a museum in Gettysburg a few years ago. There was a display of what the troops slept under in the 1860's, shelter halves. I was not infantry, I was motor T in the USMC, but I spent enough nights under those to know how miserable it is. I am not surprised it took the military ~130 years to change the tents. The BFA was a very nice touch.
Cool review. I would, though, consider telling folks about near ambush vs far ambush thoughts. Near ambush you HAVE TO RUSH the threat. We've seen the horrific sense like from New Zealand church shutting were a ton of folks were killed bunched together in one side of the hall. Scenes like that happen so so many times now a days. In NZ, one person rushed the gunmen and almost made it. Imagine if everyone did that. The lost of life would have been much much less. Yes, every instinct will tell you to not do that. But for near ambushes, its your only chance. Semper Fi
I did boot I 73 and we ate rats from 47 and 48, no one got sick. I'm on my third shelter 1/2 tent (gave one away) they work really well set up like a Waylen, it gives you more room and warm with a fire out front.
Thanks for another great video. The biggest problem with UA-cam is that they change their rules and make them retroactive so things that you may have done that were OK are suddenly not and they kick you. A lot of the 2A channels are having a tough time now because UA-cam doesn't want them having sponsors for thing like accessories, ammo, etc. Yet the past few weeks, even for videos that have nothing to do with 2A things, I keep getting ads for holsters, body armor, firearm insurance, but heaven forbid someone like Hicock45 or Colion Nior show and talk about those things. The hypocrisy and double standards are ridiculous.
As always a great video You explain how and why On both sides of the coin And I understand why you don't do the things you do Even though you could You don't want to cut your own throat Have a great day and keep these fantastic videos coming
In the Philippines, we use hammocks with mosquito nets and a rainfly (which we call "poncho tents"). That said, all other gear, including the mess tin and ALICE pack are still being issued.
I was in the Marines when we still ate C-Rations. I had purchased some MRE meals and let me tell you. They might be lighter to carry but they suck compared to C-Rations.

The new MRE’s have the mini Tabasco’s again 😊 Just spent a week in the field last month and was pretty happy about the Tabasco.
Ain't seen the new MRE's aka army medic specialist son since back in the early 90's-01
Hell Yeah, been in since 1990 - still in - miss the old days
was stated in the video that there is room leftover for whatever you need to bring
Woodland Camo was one of the best
I work for a food service company and we sell those little bottles of tabasco sauce. I have thought about buying it but there is like 200 in a case.
I don't think you'd have a
problem sell the excess
Love the 80s-90s look
We still use this equipment here in Brazil, I was in the army last year and except for the helmet and the M-16 it is basically the same gear.
USMC here 75-78. Man I slept in many a storm in those shelter halfs. A blast for the past. Thanks Brother.
I used all that stuff plus we had old sea rations in a can and the actually had cigarettes in them. Army 65-69
Thank all the vets for your service we appreciate you god bless yall 🇺🇸 🇺🇲
I joined 9-11-2001.
I still have all this gear
I still use all this gear.
Proof that time passes quickly. After 22 years and 3 months in the Air Force I got out- in 2003. Feeling it for sure. I like that you still look good in uniform.
Ha! Just started to watch but had to pause.
I always get a giggle when I read the MRE instructions that say "a rock or something". 😂😂😂😂
@@AMKB01 The "or something" refers to out of date C-Rats. Those antique crackers are as hard as diamonds.
As soon as you brought out the tent I could smell it. I was never in the military but my Scout troop used surplus tents.
Got to love the exhalation of the mildew, and following cough. Just wondering if I could take the one in the garage out to a safer test zone.
I was in Okinawa in 87 and we didn't even use shelter halves it was so hot and humid. Almost all of that gear looks like the same stuff we were using then.
This took me back. I was in the Army in 1997 and this was everything we carried.
Thanks for the trip down memory lane. 1st Cav Infantry 75-78.
Mate from England, don’t pay attention to the knockers. There sat at home with a keyboard…
We all did our thing in our own regiments at the time with what they gave us and we cracked on …
We saw you yanks in Germany .. we took the piss because you had all the best gear (but no idea 😊) and were envious. But always in a respectful way mate which was reciprocated.
Enjoy your videos mate …..
Do what you do 🫡🏴🇺🇸
I still have my dad's Vietnam era canvas tent, stakes, wood poles & inflatable mat. I loved camping in that as a kid.
Giving me flashbacks to 1997 when I was in Okinawa and Camp Hansen!
I remember eating ham slice and the sawdust bar( granola bar)
😂😂
The spam slice, haha
I recall eating C-Rations first time in boot camp in 1981. I recall seeing MREs 1983. I still have my John Wayne P-38 no joke.
Lol mines on my key ring
Man this brings back so many memories... My squad leader was ex-infantry and did field training in the infantry style; 2quart, e-tool, sleeping under a poncho, all of it. This was around 2000. I don't miss it, but looking back I kind of enjoyed the change of pace from our office work.
I was in to 2003 and I was still getting tabasco bottles in mine. Had to have happened after that.
Brother, we were using the same gear you have on, in the army in Germany in 1985-86. Although in 1983-84 at Fort Polk, LA, we had the old two piece steel pots instead of the kevlars. Great nostalgia trip 🫡
Oh man, this brings back some memories lol
Man this brings back memories 87 to 94. It needs to be raining. If it ain't raining you ain't training. As the old saying is said come on 😂
I was in the Corps 89-93 and I remember the dehydrated pork and beef patty and dehydrated fruit. MRE's 29:48 have came a long way since then. Semper Fi!!!
The pears and strawberries were king
Been in the Seabee’s since ‘03. Seems like we got all your old gear when the Corps upgraded! We did adopt the TCOP tent, thankfully, versus the shelter halves. But pretty much all that gear you sported in ‘97 was my issue in 2003. We had the MTV, not the flak vest though. We also had the M16 A1’s that were fully automatic vs your A2 with the 3 round burst. Mostly because we did not have machine guns at the squad level. We only had them in static defensive positions or vehicle mounted (240b, M2, MK19). Good video!
Navy gets everybody's old stuff.
M-14's, M-16's, steel pots, MRE's, 1911's, utility jackets, ....
Tried to watch it when it dropped, but got the email as I dropped out of service for a quick scout/dry run with my brother. Thank you for another one.
First! Another excellent vid. Man, you really nail the 90s in those military gear videos. Have you ever thought about going on one of those survival shows?
You and those Meals Rejected by Everybody....
This video brings me back..also they have brought back the small Tabasco bottles in certain mres. I had come across them on my field exercise in 2023
I ate C Rats and MRE in the Army, never understood why the had diagram of a rock or something, then I realized Marines also ate MREs and understood.
Hey Corporal Kelly,
I have gotten both crushed red pepper and Tabasco in the same case of MRE.
“Rock or somthing” always cracked me tf up😂
Oh, the irony……
@@benjaminperez7328must’ve went right over my head, explanation?
Joined Army in 2018. Still had Tobasco bottles in the MREs but they were prolly expired.
In Canada we call them an A frame shelter
And don’t forget to sharpen your E-tool edges, it’s a wicked weapon when going hand to hand, just use a belt sander to put a decent edge on it.
those old rucks are still the best.
Good to watch you again... Corporal, is like meeting again and old friend. Glad you still uploading videos. Salute! :)
I mostly enjoyed your shelter building videos, but also the ones with just a camp fire and talk where you gave your point of view of the things happening in the world or advise to youngers... great stuff, because you are a reasonable, and practical person. Kudos!
(the ones reviewing gear or testing techniques or so are great too )
I bought some mre,s recently and they still put the Tabasco in them
Love that old school gear.
Coworker called my father that night and was shocked because it really was the rod he lost….then proceeded to tell my father he could have at least had the decency to clean the rod up before he returned it😂
i’ve been incredibly busy the past 9 months- which means i have about 9 months worth of your videos to catch up on. cheers corporal sir, and thank you for continue to teach us after all of these years. may many more come
we had the tabasco bottles in the canadian mre we used to save them up and trade for american gear in gagetown new brunswick.
Thank you.
In 2011 they stopped the tabasco sauce bottles, then the tabasco bottles came back in 2019, after many complaints. (Retired 1SG, USA, 1984-2013)
The look you gave after "cracker spoon"... priceless 🤘
We'd been happy with some freeze dried taster's choice. He springs this gourmet sh#*!
As always a great video You explain how and why On both sides of the coin And I understand why you don't do the things you do Even though you could You don't want to cut your own throat Have a great day and keep these fantastic videos coming
Love it and it is 30 minutes fuck yeah 👍🙌🙌🙌
In the Philippines, we use hammocks with mosquito nets and a rainfly (which we call "poncho tents"). That said, all other gear, including the mess tin and ALICE pack are still being issued.
I was in the Marines when we still ate C-Rations. I had purchased some MRE meals and let me tell you. They might be lighter to carry but they suck compared to C-Rations.
Agreed, liked the c-rats better. And the Lucky Strikes were a nice touch. My guys kept me in stale ass cigarettes. LoL
