Man, Pete was just a beast on those skins. Just a killer drummer who never got the recognition he deserved during his all-too-short lifetime. Those of us who knew, knew. For me he was right up there with the greatest drummers of all time… and he was just a kid when they cut those classic albums. Still a teenager on the first two. I’m a lifer where Echo is concerned. The first four albums are burned into my soul at this point, and I still go see them whenever the opportunity presents itself and don’t dislike the post-reunion albums (though they’re not even in the same universe as the first four). However, ever since Pete’s departure there has always been something big missing, and it’s a hole that will never be filled. Drummers of Pete’s caliber are extremely few and far between. Rest in power
I must say this song shows off the skill of the bass player who incorporated at least three styles all in one song (slap funk, standard rock, and aggressive guitar style). Ian's voice was booming and without the slightest hint of strain.
Give the drummer his due. This is one of the most furious pieces of drumming I've ever heard. And the guitarist as well. In fact all of them. They are all firing on all 4 cylinders, and then some.
Followed them around the country on the Ocean Rain tour in 84, was 19, possibly the best experience of my life. Met Mac twice backstage, he's a poppet, sound lar
Was just washing the pots and playing this on phone to liven it up a bit. Suddenly I heard de de de de de da da da da as my 4 year old came dancing into the kitchen singing the guitar intro. Saw these live back when I was at school in about 1983 then got the Mac haircut and everything. Like father like son!
This has reminded me of that episode of 'The Young Ones' where Rick (Rik Mayall RIP) is going to write to Thatcher saying that they have a bomb. But she seems to have hundreds of entries in the phone book so he decides to write to the lead singer of Echo and The Bunnymen ... Dear Mr Echo! IIRC the episode was just called 'Bomb' and featured in Series 2.
I fucking love this song so much, I forgot it, like a buried treasure I rediscover exactly when I needed it most, thanks always for your love and support when I put the needle on the echo and bunnymen record , my mum was so sick of listening to them
It sometimes blows my mind that E&tBM weren't much bigger.....or seen as such now. Sometimes I wonder if it's literally just due to the name... Then again, Smashing Pumpkins were huge, with that name. idk....but I'm sure glad they existed at all. Such incredible music. The Killing Moon is still, imo, one of the best songs of all time. And Lips Like Sugar might be their greatest pop moment....and deservedly so.
This reminds me of my days as a high school junior, listening to this song while driving to school in the morning. I know for sure that I was one of very few people who was into this kind of music at my high school.
Amazing my daughter is 3 eyars and she loves echo and the bunnymen.. great eh??.. so i am 31 and i love echo amazing band... !! the first time i listen a song of them was cos my big bro!! best times... congrats for u
Came here after reading about the recording in Ian Brodies book. I don't know how the Bunnymen passed me by but I suppose I had a young family at the time. Saw them on St George's Plateau on NYE 2,000. Excellent track, I think I will be listening to their back catalogue over the next few months.
reminds me of the the joy division dynamic when playing their instruments. totally involved with what they're doing, even if they're syncing it to a recorded track where they can lay back a bit, focused to the point where it seems like they're programmed but at the same time producing a sound that you simply can't programme.
Funny. i just discovered this band a few hours ago, now they're in my top ten. The combine the best aspects of joy division, U2, and are the quintessential post punk band. the music is good, unshallow, without being pretentious.
U2 and Echo & the Bunnymen got started at almost exactly the same time on opposite sides of the Irish Sea. They both grew up listening to the same kind of music and worshiping the same bands, so it makes sense they would end up sounding like each other.
There was a short era in English music. 1980 to 1982. So much brilliant stuff happened then. The music, the culture, the fashion. A great time to be alive, and a great time to be young. It was like the tired 70s had finished but the naff and bloated 80s had not yet begun. 1983 to 1985 were still okay, but the rot had started to set in. By '86, it was downhill from there.

One of the best Echo songs out. Anyone know who sang the song "Gimme Love". It's way old and around the same time. Video had a bunny in it and thought it was them for the longest time. PM me if you know. Thanks,
great..i have the record (Porcupine) with this song on it; plus some other great songs... good to see theres a video of it....looks like a Brerakfast Club B-roll...lol
I agree with PAULLONDEN. That bit owns! And to the dude asking about Stephen Morris, I'm pretty sure the other guy was talking about the drummer from Joy Division/New Order and not the painter lol.
So much better before the style police imposed a collective prudishness that resulted in those more recent periods when every male had a round domed shorn head and they all looked the bloody same! Viva individualism.

All that pompous overblown music and singing from mountain tops and shouting. Utter shite. Give me this one song by the Bunnymen over U2's entire music catalogue any day.
Perhaps, but there were many good bands back then. It was hard to be a front runner with all that compitition. I loved them then and still play them now
One of the most underrated bands. They deserved way more recognition. Been listening to them for 20 years.
Been listening to them for 40 odd years, love them ❤❤
@@pip06powellYep! 43 years for me. Met Mac and Pete in 1984. Core memory.
Rated *VERY* highly by most people I know.

The whole album is solid from start to finish. Porcupine was their apex.

Les was unique, seemed to play all upstrokes.

Fly Drive 2020 yeah, loved those nutters. Never been equaled, that anarchistic punk comedy. RIP Rik!
It was Riks 'Meet me at the barricades babe, see you when the lights go low Joe' moment.
Pete was the best. I can never go a few months without listening to these early Bunnymen songs with Pete smashing those drums.

They sure channeled the gods for a while. Psyche, Eros and Poseidon chiefly.
