Some key inputs:
1. This phrase was popularized by Nehru after 1947, specifically in the context of UP since he made Prayagraj/Ilahabad his home. He didn't want Punjab-like tension in UP, that's why he popularized this phrase. Another reason was the joint allied Hindu-Muslim First war of independence in 1857 in which Awadh state was the centre of the entire independence war (so-called "rebellion" by British and their coolie desi historians)
This phrase didn't exist during the era of Awadh nawabs.
The other region where this was often applied was the Hyderabad state, where it is completely out of context.
2. Was this actually true? NO, not really.
Just like other regions, Hindus and Muslims didn't intermarry or dined together in UP either. But still, the relations were far better than in Punjab, which was the frontier state for Afghan invasions. Awadh, just like Bengal, was ruled by Iranian Shia Nawabs who were generally far more tolerant of Hindu traditions.
There was a dramatic change after 1857, as both the Hindu/Muslim identities became ideological in nature rather than being practice-oriented as was the case prior to that.
Nehru just tried to work according to his own agenda in creating a past that never existed, but still, which in my view wasn't totally unjustified either.
