    That was an awesome episode, and as a friend of both Kyle, from World of Rockhounds, and Jared, from Currently Rockhounding, and an Oregonian, it was eagerly anticipated. I recognized Kyles obsidian pieces instantly. Even if you had not said where they came from, i would have known. That piece with tbe cross hatch pattern is so specific, and Kyle is our resident Fire Obsidian expert. He is amazing with it and like you said, he can manage to work it and expose the fire without losing it! Awesome episode!

    For those heading out to Glass Buttes to find some fire - while you do need to watch out that you don't dig/collect on the various claims out there (without permissions), the good news is that those aren't the only spots where you can find fire magnetite/obsidian. I've located it in most areas, including on the backside of Little Glass Butte where there isn't a ton of digging activity. It's not the easiest material to spot, and you'll have to work for it, but there's plenty of fire to be found outside of the areas with active claims!

      Green/black/brown for the ones I have. I have some mahogany obsidian that shows some reddish color in the transparent parts it seems. One I have is banded green obsidian. It all depends on the inclusions. And lots of obsidian can be transparent, you just have to make it thin enough for the light to get through.

      @rdizzy1 2 роки тому +2

      None of those claims are valid anyways, you cannot make a claim to obsidian (same with agate, chert, or petrified wood), according to the 1872 mining law. The state will allow you to make a claim, and pay them, regardless if it is invalid or not, it becomes invalid once someone issues a challenge then you find out it has been invalid the entire time. People are still free to go here and gather it themselves, regardless what people think or how long they have had the "claim".

      @@WorldofRockhounds howdy the guy that dug that i met in about the year 2000, that was roughly when it was dug up from the buttes. Each hole out there seems to have a different pattern scheme and unique colors to it so they are fairly easy to rule out one hole to the next. stacked lines seem to be closer to pinch points in a seem but then when the vein widens they tend to spread out more putting more glass between the bands. it's still like chasing a line that went through a laffy taffy machine before it cooled tho.

    Watched a video a while back of someone (Greenpowerscience) melting down garden lava rocks (Basalt, Andesite or similar) and melting it down using and enormous Fresnell lens and the sun to "manufacture" obsidian. Would the resulting material have similar properties (able to be polished for pretty colours etc.)?

      It’s a different process that creates color patterns in this compared to opals, but the effects can be similar

    I was just at Little Glass Butte in February and am going back this weekend, March 2024.
    The fire obsidian has been all claimed up. The claim holders are pretty protective of their claims and product, as fire obsidian is the ONLY obsidian sold by the CARAT. I hope you appreciated the fact you were holding literally thousands of dollars worth of obsidian! 😂
    I just wanted to put it out of people's minds that they can just go and throw a shovel in the ground anywhere up there. Don't be careless and piss off a claim holder. You can check for a claim map at the BLM office in Burns, or search the web, where there is a lot of info on LGB. All other kinds of obsidian are fair game. 😊. Check the web for pit maps.
