In this edition of #TheDailyDoug, I'm listening to Take Hold of the Flame by Queensrÿche. My friend, Montag, from the Heavy Metal Horror podcast suggested the live version of this one, and I'm happy to have watched it. Tate's voice take center stage in this tour-de-force of a performance. Enjoy!

Of course Geoff is just untouchable in the 80s and 90s, but Chris Degarmo's backing vocals are freaking outstanding.

    • @Rendclaw

Out of all the reactors I have seen review this song, only ONE gave Chris his flowers as a singer. It cannot be easy to sing harmony to Geoff at this time, but Chris did it with straight up aplomb, and you can ALWAYS hear him alongside Geoff. The band really took a turn when he left, he was the heart and soul of the band.

@Billy White Jr. I saw them on the Warning, Rage, Mindcrime, Building Empires, and Promised Land tours in Sacramento, CA. I would say Tate was in his prime during all of those years (Rage being my favorite for peak). But more importantly, the band hit it's absolute peak on Building Empires. Geoff's range on Queen of the Reich, The Lady Wore Black and Take Hold of the Flame is just crazy... but the overall band is just fantastic... that EP, to Warning, to Rage, to Mindcrime is where my QR love usually goes back to. Empire is at that edge of almost too polished, but it's still a great album. For me, just not the same quality of writing after DeGarmo left the band, but that 80s era was just magical.

The Warning album was way ahead of its time, Roads to Madness and NM156 are very cutting edge for 1984, the whole album has a very dark, dystopian vibe, it's very underrated, a true classic.

@@PGGMusic Yeah it does, good point. It was definitely a sign of where they were going. It was supposed to open the album but the idiots at the label thought it was too weird. I made a playlist of all the songs based on the song order that the band originally wanted for the album and it flows so much better and makes more sense. When I was a kid I always wondered why they used that weird sound effect to start NM156 and then used it again for the end of Roads to Madness. Knowing now that NM156 was supposed to open the album it makes total sense. It bookends all the songs beautifully, they really had some great ideas for such a young band at the time.

"Singular instrument" and "color" - great descriptions. Agree! I get chills listening to this, still. Everything on The Warning is so good. "In their prime"... Yes! "That's amazing". You get it Doug. This is why early Queensryche is better than the later stuff, comments regarding Maiden imitation be damned.

It was 1984 at a small club in Baltimore " Hammerjacks " . Paid 5 dollars at the door and found an upper level balcony had stool . Overlooking the stage . Thee most perfect seating !! . That night I felt like Queensryche was mine . Playing for only me . I had a lot of problems at that time in my life ,wanting to give up . This song inspired me to never give up . The whole night the band kept bumping their fist at me and waving drumsticks . Geoff kept on looking at me . Then it happened . During this songs lead . He climbed up a took my hand and stayed with me during the entire lead . I remember Chirs playing the lead and looking at us . It I could have read his mind ,He was saying " Please don't push Geoff off the top " .. This song became my life's anthem and I did my best and won . 2 years ago I was diagnosed with Stage 4 Cancer and expected to die . Miraculously and inexplicably. Now the cancer is gone and to some degree I reflected on that night and that song. . It sings to the downtrodden and has a message of Hope . It helped me through . I took hold of the flame

Geoff Tate in his prime was unmatched. I've seen him live in tiny clubs from 1985-1989 and I've never heard a voice like his before or since. Queensryche as a whole have been vastly overlooked in the sphere of hard rock. They were one of the greatest Prog Metal bands there ever was. From the 1st EP thru Operation Mindcrime, they were the epitome of hard rock greatness. Then MTV got hold of them and that was it.

I'll keep this brief, as I am not looking for some conversation about this, or anything else. I doubt this will ever get read, but rather stuck in the weeds of hundreds of comments. If you see it someday, fantastic.
Grew up playing stringed and brass instruments. Pretty much all of them. Started a music degree program, started drugs, dropped out of school, did not drop out of drugs.
Due to the damage my lifestyle (see: I) did to my body, I am now on a terminal clock.
Thankfully, working isn't a need for me, so I watch some UA-cam. Found you. Your words - the language of theory, musicology, lyrical analysis - it made my soul sing. I simply cried for a while.
I have a little under a year left, but I have enrolled myself into school, and will be taking courses and studying and analyzing and taking exams about music, for the rest of my life.
That's because of you, mostly, so I wanted to make sure and embed my thanks into your channel, to be there to celebrate you into perpetuity. You helped give my ending a little more purpose, and I thank you.

Can we just talk a moment about Chris' harmony vocal ABOVE Tate just before the solo?
Awesome reaction Doug, as per usual.
Yes, Geoff was almost untouchable in his prime. Sadly, years of smoking (and, of course, age) have taken a toll on his voice and he just isn't the same singer today. The band had to ultimately tune down to Eb to accommodate him. One of the only singers who could even come close to Tate in the '80s was the late Midnight from Crimson Glory... which is hardly surprising considering that both Midnight and Geoff studied with the same vocal coach.

Queensryche's first 5 albums have been my top 5 albums since I started listening to them in 1984- saw them opening for Kiss and ran out and bought their EP and the Warning. Not IN my top 5, but my literal top 5 full albums (I listen to a lot of other music, but for full albums, these are incredible- very few songs that aren't worth listening to). They diverged from my tastes after Empire, but I still listen to those first 5 consistently. Amazing vocals, songwriting, musicianship. I still get chills listening to them. Phenomenal talents.

Hey Doug... I am a subscriber for some time now.. I think this is my first comment.. Another progressive power house from this era, who share quite a few stylistic elements with Queensryche are Fates Warning.. If you dug this check them out, and keep up the great job you're doing with your channel here. I am most impressed with your knack of dissecting and explaining in laymans terms while not dumbing it down. I am a veteran of the late 80's hard rock/metal/punk scene of Vancouver B.C. so I consider myself well steeped in releases of any Northwest hard/heavy bands of the era, so I gotta say it gives me great joy reliving the impression that I had when discovering a lot of the content you're reacting to. In a lot of ways you have created a time machine of sorts, when you're checking out, for instance Hocus Pocus, or Opeth, or as is this one, Queensryche. The band I recommended 'FATES WARNING' shared a vocalist who had a huge range and the musical arrangements which were really progressive... Not cookie cutter style at all, they didn't get the legendary status which was afforded so many of their peers. Given how active a listener you are I think you'll really take a shine to them, oh yeah, um sorry for my verbosity, ADHD can make one prone to run on sentences. \,,/ 4 Horns UP !! \,,/

Those who know the Rÿche for the last almost 40 years have been as passionate as any other band. They have a 5 or six album run that stacks up with anyone else. Geoff’s vocals were insane, Eddie and Scott kept the rhythm down perfectly, Michael was a perfect compliment to Chris and Chris’ soloing and songwriting is shockingly undervalued for the era. 100 years from now, there will be college classes on Operation Mindcrime and Empire for their social commentary and exemplary playing and songwriting. And 100 years from now, everyone will have that same reaction to that high E as you did Doug. Great job
