    Pre-review: Ive been dying to find somewhere to comment this. The BIG question I have from the trailer is HOW TF does all this work? They have some guy 'trapped' but they OBVIOUSLY don't know who he is or what he looks like since he is walking through police lines. So HOW TF can they be sure they got him in the trap? HOW TF do they expect to keep him? Or to sort him from the thousands of others? The way he walks around in the ad makes it look like he can leave just by faking/tricking someone.
    AND.... WHY TF would you put like 10k people in a trap and expect to sort one dude out of it? Its TOO BIG. Too much area... Too many people... Too much time... Its not like EVERYONE is gonna wait til the end of the concert to leave. You can't lock down thousands of people, like physically can't. The most likely result is a riot once someone says 'serial killer'. Or at least a panicked crowd trampling anyone/thing that gets in its way cops/barriers/etc. It's like they are trying to cause mass casualties just for the lulz.
    And being inside a city just makes it worse. MAYBE if this was 2-400 at some desert fire festival MAYBE. You could set up a perimeter and watch for anyone crossing the desert. But this just looks dumb as a premise.
    I'm not saying the movie is bad... Just that it's starting with a MAJOR negative factor. I predict a lot of plot contrivances to make ANYTHING happen in this movie.

    • @truthedministry
      @truthedministry Місяць тому +1

      Ok, I've seen the film, but even if I hadn't your questions wouldn't make any sense. The Trap is set in a stadium with a fixed number of entrances and exits. When entering the stadium, everyone needed to go through a metal detector and other security measures (that's standard operating procedure for any large gathering/event). The event is a concert with a pop idol and they are looking for a middle aged male... not a lot of those are going to be there. So, there are like 50k people at the event, but maybe only a few hundred dads there with their daughters. So, you simply reverse the entry procedure and have the people leave through specific points where the adult middle-aged men are separated to be questioned. Even if someone left early, they'd have to leave through one of those check points. Also, this was in the preview, but throughout the concert, they are pulling men from the crowd to question them, so they aren't simply waiting for the end of the concert either.
      The concept is fine, the execution was... meh. There were a lot of contrivances, most of which weren't necessary. Still that part of the movie was fine... until they left the concert and everything fell apart. Up until that it was a fun and decent movie... but the third act was terrible in almost every way, with the only redeeming factors being Josh Harnett's and Alison Pill's performances towards the end. Everything else was predictable, absurd, and sometimes laughable about that third act. Regular security guards at an arena making mistakes and being lax with the rules, sure... but FBI and SWAT trained agents being that lenient with the perp they know is a violent serial killer... nope, never would happen.

    None of his films "holds up" they don't warrant repeat watches and once you know the twist the films never stand on their own. 6th sense is DAM boring once you know the mystery. Unbreakable isn't bad but again, once you know the end the beginning just seems dumb

    • @truthedministry
      @truthedministry Місяць тому

      You don't know what you are talking about as the 6th Sense is better on rewatches, because there are so many details that hint at the twist that you didn't pay attention to on the first or second viewing. I had the ending of Unbreakable spoiled for me before I even watched the film and it still holds up. Signs, Unbreakable, and The Village all hold up to repeat viewing for me... but the most of his films don't hold up to first viewings... The Happening, The Last Airbender, After Earth... all terrible on any viewing.

    I only went to see this movie because of Josh Hartnett and in that regard I was not disappointed but the movie was kind of meh. I didn't think the execution of the FBI setting up the Trap was fleshed out very well. What were they going to do just grab every man and assume they could somehow discern the killer from what interrogating them all?

    • @truthedministry
      @truthedministry Місяць тому

      That seemed to be their idea... but they had so many conflicting descriptions even the tattoo thing wouldn't have lead them to the guy they were after. However, an interrogation would have given them a small pool of likely suspects. For a serial killer, they can't last long once suspicion is on them as there would be someone trying to tie them to every crime from that point on, which would make it impossible for him to keep doing what he does.

      I haven't seen the movie, so this isn't spoilers: I thought it was hinting at the daughter being the killer in the first trailer I saw, but then a second longer one came out that seemed to make it more clear it is him, and this review also seems to imply there isn't a twist on the killer's identity.
      But now I can't help but feel like if it was the daughter all along and that he is trying to protect her the whole time that would make things more interesting. For one, it would give some more personality to him, as he isn't the killer but because of the family bond he ends up being supportive of her murderous ways. This could even make him consider the possibility of letting her get caught to free himself from letting her commit the murders, as he doesn't like them but isn't willing to stop her. It would create an interesting dynamic between them as a family. But I don't know if the movie has its own dynamics that are as interesting as that yet.

  • @tituspannell6009
    @tituspannell6009 Місяць тому

    A good twist to this movie would have been Josh Hartnett's character using his mind to frame his murders onto the redheaded mother at the concert, Jody's mother. It would have made so much sense, especially when Jody's mother said to Josh's character that she has a dark side, and she said it in front of the police. It would have made it great, because the cops were looking for a male, but the crime is pushed onto a woman, who unexpectedly takes the fall for the murders, and then Josh's character escapes the concert that way, and that's how the movie ended. It would have proved how genius he is in evading the law, but no they couldn't go this way because it would mess up the agenda in the movie. This is white straight men bad, and women in general are good. This is also coming from me, a black man saying this. If I can see it then it was obvious and true.

  • @Acme633
    @Acme633 6 днів тому

    The serial killer aspect of Josh's character was never developed. There was never anything in the movie that indicated any derangement of this kind. He could have been just anyone who committed a serial crime and so tried to evade law enforcement during the concert and so provided opportunities for the audience into listening to entire songs and then seeing Lady Saleka playing sleuth in the third act.

    Grand Piano is a great little thriller that I'd never heard of. I was given the DVD and was pleasantly surprised. That is an example of a concert in a movie that keeps the story moving forward. Also a unique score that had to be composed before shooting as it is the concert being performed. Very cool project.

    I think it would have helped the film had we all not gone into it knowing what's going on. The play on who is Josh H's character and what he's up to would have been better. Shyamalan's daughter doesn't really do anything ridiculous in the movie that I want consider 'girl boss'. The premise is confusing. How did law enforcement know that the Butcher was going to the concert? Did they do a give away of a pair of tickets? Did he announce he was going to attend? Did they believe he was a big fan of the singer? That's like assuming the Zodiac killer was going to the Monterey Pop Festival. You said he was trapped because they were interviewing all the men, how?! What were they asking? Do you have any serial killer proclivities? Just the premise is enough to keep me away. BTW, giving away the twists would not hurt its success or failure.

    I'm sorry, but this movie is ridiculous. And I 'm a M. Night Shyamalan fan. So many implausible situations happen, and during everyone- it took me out of the movie. Like Chris mentioned, he (and I) laughed more at this movie than most comedies and the film wasn't playing for hilarity during these circumstances. Good idea, not nearly enough application. One last thing, Lady Raven certainly took many (and long) breaks during the concert, clearly just so the story could move along.
