- A quick, no spoiler guide. Designed for new players to get over the game's initial challenges.
I've loved this game. But a lot of people in my life do not have the patience to "figure out" the early challenges as the devs intended. This guide is for anyone who put this game down and wants an assist. New Players. Or even if you're considering buying.

00:24 - Basics
03:21 - Getting Started
04:55 - Surviving the Timer
09:40 - Cult Time

Damn homie really dropped the single best cultist simulator tutorial then dipped forever
My first playthrough died because of a heart failure. My new journey gave me the option to start as a doctor and found a paper called "[previous char's name] Case" and started tracing their steps.
Found that really amazing
This is exactly what i needed: just enough & without spoilers. Thaanks and well done.
Totally what I was gonna say!!!!!!
I think my favourite mechanical system in this game is the dread mechanic.
When I started out I was obsessed with trying to avoid any investigator (I. E. I didn't even want to accumulate mystique). But then I kept running into a problem. I would get restless and that restlessness would decay into dread. Now if I remembered to paint with my restlessness I would be fine, but it was difficult to juggle glover and glover with painting and inevitably I'd get my first dread.
So what would I do? Sleep with health. Sometimes sleeping with health makes contentment, but sometimes it made a second dread. So I'd get into a situation where I've got two dreads and one more will kill me. I haven't unlocked the club (which can also make dread). I can't trust sleeping not to make more dread and quite often this would be the end of my run.
But then I discovered that I can feed dread as trappings into the cultist recruitment cycle. By allowing myself to become a target for investigation, I could accumulate acquaintances who could sponge up excess dread until I got far enough into the game to have the resources needed to nullify dread by alternative means (going to the mansus to get fascination/contentment etc.)
Very clever design.
oh right, you can use stuff as trappings for recruitment even if it doesn't match your cult, as long as you're hitting the right threshold. good catch! restlessness also helps with follower upgrades, as it contributes a little bit of a bunch of different types. when you're stuck on a 4 or 6 of your lore, it can help get your guys up to disciples
Or you can always explore and find a good place to take a nightly stroll. Or become another victim of the opioid epidemic. ;P
I feel like you're talking a different language
8:04 OMFG This has me in tears 10/10 clip.
I've lost like the first 6 runs of this game all to dread, so learning that there are consistent ways to generate contentment and get rid of restlessness helps a ton, thanks.
This was really helpful, thank you so much! I found that I got frustrated with how little guidance there is- I know it’s supposed to be exploratory but this is just the right amount of guidance. Also love the little quips you put in, especially 5:14 hahaha. Thanks Mr. G!
My takeaway from this tutorial: "Cultist Simulator wants you dead."
Awesome video! Can't wait for more tutorials!
I googled ‘Why Cultist Simulator hates me’ and ended up here.
Thanks for the amazing tutorial!
I just started playing this, i died like 2 times and got minor cop ending, i knew most of the stuff you talked about but the professionalism and quality of your video is outstanding! you really should become Big
One quick addition to dealing with dread/fascination, that you didn't mention!
You can negate fascination cards, by dreaming of them with dread--and this also negates the dread!
Also, remember: Just because you 'can' dream a mood away, doesn't mean you need to--if there's enough time left on a contentment/dread/reminiscence card that it would negate the dread/seeing things verb, that card can get pulled in during the verb's next cycle, assuming there's not additional fascination/dread on the board, and even sometimes if there is. Or you can just wait for the mood card to decay on its own, if there's no Dread/Seeing Things verb already on your board or in your foreseeable future.
What this means, is that you can keep dreaming with more useful cards, and let the mood cards and mood verbs resolve themselves without dreaming, if you have a counter mood influence available, or just enough time to get rid of cards.
Example 1, Getting Rid of Cards Dreamlessly: I just whiffed an opportunity to convert restlessness into fuel for painting, because I needed to keep my desk job at Glover & Glover. But I check the 'Time Passes' verb, and see that there's no Season of Despair icon. Since I don't have to worry about the dread getting picked up yet, I leave it on the table and let its timer decay. Another season passes, no Despair verb is predicted--and finally, a third with no Despair--I'm able to wait out the entire 180 second duration of the Dread card, and it decays on its own.
Example 2, Getting Rid of Verbs Dreamlessly: I am dreaming with Reason early game, because Reason can get me access to extra vitality/glimmering, but I accidentally generate fascination from "Nightmare: The Cleansing Dawn". I look at my 'Time Passes' verb, and see that I have a 'Season of Visions' coming up next, so that Fascination's definitely about to get picked up. But as luck would have it, I recently generated a reminiscence from a Despair verb resolving without picking up any Dread! So sure, I could dream with the fascination and reminiscence cards together, to negate them both and avoid having the "Seeing Things" verb stick around. But that would still take up an entire precious minute cycle of dreaming, that I could instead spend repeating dreaming with reason to get what I need--
So instead of dreaming the two mood cards together, I check the timer left on the Reminiscence card. It still has 100 seconds on it, and my "Time Passes" verb is down to 20 seconds--20 seconds on the time verb, + 60 on the Seeing Things verb to process the Fascination = 80 seconds, my Reminiscence lasts 100 more seconds, 100-80 = 20--so that's more than enough for the season to pass, and the "Seeing Things" verb to digest the Fascination card, and then pick up the Reminiscence and kill itself on its own. I didn't have to waste a minute dreaming, and the "Seeing Things" verb takes care of picking up the reminiscence on its own and just goes away.
This would also work if I let a restlessness decay into a dread card, to get picked up by "Seeing Things", so long as there isn't a Despair verb on the board with an open magnet slot.
Now mind you, this second technique gets risky if you have multiple dread or fascination cards on the board (the verb can choose to take another bad mood card that would worsen it, and ignore the ones that would cancel it), or if you have multiple bad mood verbs going, and it's considerably harder to cancel Despair directly with contentment as well, since contentment only lasts a full minute.
It's in this situation that I should remind you of the 'paint' skill's ability to store and preserve moods. You can hold onto a reminiscence or contentment, for when you most need it, by repeatedly painting with it.
Good luck managing your moods!
Had about an hour and a half of gameplay time before I sorta kinda figured out how to get my cult going, but then I kept getting bogged down with restlessness and dread and found myself at a standstill. Super helpful video!!
I think players should experience these first couple of hours without any previous knowledge, as that really sets up the atmosphere.
But this video was really fun, and avoided spoileres well! Probably the best introduction that can be made to this game.
There are many new players (raises hand) who HATE having no idea what's going on and will quit without some kind of direction. I appreciate this video for those players. It's ok if it's not for you!
Where was this guide when I hit the **Redacted** ending!? Or when I perished... Many many times. Thanks for the tips! Mayhaps I'll give the game another go! :)
Also... Can you tell me more about.... **Looks Around Nervously** Moths?
@@Fromightyone JustMothThings THTHTHTHTHTH! :p
I agree with what this random person said ^
@@Fromightyone absolutely not! 😂 can’t tell ya about the MOTH. But I’m glad I helped!
I forgot to come back and tell i finished my first run,and this guide was of incredible help.
I like this game overall, especially the ambient and lore behind it, but it was such a pain at times I don't think I'll ever play it again.
Like, in my first and unique grand victory, which took an absurdly amount of time I'm not willing to confess, almost at the end when i was very advanced i was about to lose it all for only ONE second. And this is a run I considered myself to be VERY lucky.
However your guide and explanation was supreme. Wish you the best and that you're still doing good buddy 👍 in hope you ever come back. There's very few people with such communication skills in the tube.
This...was the BEST Beginner's guide I've come across. Just started the game myself, I am completely blind, but I already have my notes to the side. Thanks for all of the tips, I have added them to my notes! Ok, back to the game! 👍
I already knew most of those mechanics, but this 11:40 changed everything, you see, I am a huge fan of Lord of the Mysteries, so I was treating this game as Beyonder simulator and focusing my efforts on raising my abilities, completely ignoring the cult action, but now, I understand the truth.
Just treat it like you're Klein, he wouldn't have gotten as far as he has without the Tarot Club. Both stats and the cult is important
"Visit the main screen" was easily my favorite line. Thanks for this starter guide! It's really helped me get going!
thank you for the guide! I'm able to survive very long right after I watched this. The run is still doing well!
I find that the skill-based painting can be a decent source of a lot of glimmering, and you can study with health to get more vitality faster especially when doing it at the same time as Unskilled Labor. Getting Erudition from Work is the tricky one.
That's where patrons come in handy.
@@YourXavier since my post, I figured out a trick to juggle enough erudition from study to get the third-tier skill before unlocking the Talk and Explore verbs. Basically, study Reason 3 times before you combine your first two Erudition. From there, you should have enough time to get the other two Lessons Learnt before the first one decays!
Also, the Experienced Swindler is your friend when you want to advance through the ranks of G&G before establishing your cult
Specific books generate a glimmering, vitality, or erudition card, when studied. With enough practice, you can familiarize yourself with which these are, to give you a leg up. If you're going for more reason/passion card after that, there's also collecting essays or poetry to study, which let's you get the number of lessons you need faster than studying either those or your passion/reason/health cards.
Wow such a well-produced vid. I love the voiceover, humour and editing transitions 🥰 Keep it up man
I started this game blind, and had no clue what was happening, did 7 runs, and realised I was really enjoying it
Okay, I've been playing this game for years got all bad and minor endings (except marriage) and even some major endings, and I had no idea you could see the next event by looking at the timer
12:43 Something about your delivery on "Don't worry about it." just cracked me up.
Thanks for the mechanics explanation ❤
I remember playing the game with 0 knowledge, and feeling the game play character was like ME
Being stumbled by this fascinating world, would like to find and dig more and more
However I’m just a normal person, without any proper guidance i can only explore myself what works and what’s the consequences with my life(or time irl) or just endlessly reject by the door
Thank you so much for such a THOROUGH intro guide! Just bought the game on Switch a couple days ago and I've been flailing with basics ever since! Thanks again! ❤
7:00 Good to know I can use this for practice in the dating scene. Really really great stuff Mr G. You're a hecking natural and Im looking very forward to seeing you grow here!
For raising health to higher levels:
If you have Morland as a hideout you can EXPLORE it with 1 funds to get a level 2 heart influence that decays into vitality after 60 seconds
I always forget that you can do this. makes it so you can either supercharge the process, or lets you flex work or study to do other things while still building up vitality
This was so helpful, thank you. I've played this game for five hours already and I'm SO confused and frustrated, even though I'm still alive - through sheer luck, looking at this video. I like the game a lot, and I understand the mystery vibe, but it's also just. So frustrating ☹️ I'd love to feel like I'm not wasting resources all the time 🥲 anyway, this was very helpful and I'll definitely check out more of your videos. Thanks, dude. ✨
This helped so much! I literally never used the talk function to spread my cult cause it said i would get notoriety, and notoriety seemed really really bad so i had zero clue how to get more than a single follower lol
Played one game, and had absolutely no idea what was going on. I died 10 minutes later. Thought to myself "Well shit" and figured there'd be tutorials on UA-cam. Found this one as my first. Watched it. Lots of information. But, the one thing I did take from it upon first viewing: Pause my game.
I went back in. Paused my game. I still don't really know what I'm doing, but at least now I can do it, and maintain money and reason somewhat, while putting random cards into random boxes, hoping it'll work. It looks like perhaps it does?
In sum: pausing my game gives me time to figure out what I can do, and then try it. It might not work, but at least I'm not stressed about it!
Basically, Cultist Simulator is a time-management sim. It works a bit like the non-combat side of Persona games. Except instead of progressing events by talking to your cat/going to bed, you literally stop and starts the cogs of time itself at the press of a button.
This video was not only really helpful but genuinely funny, thanks for the upload big daddy
I've been playing this game for a long time, and while I didn't learn anything from this video, I was very entertained!
After playing for 15 hours and getting most of the game I still keep ending up in situations where I die unexpectedly. I think your video will help keeping me alive longer, I didn't realize how performing other work (aka painting) would be so important to gather contentment. Everytime I tried to do it I would get in trouble with my regular job and end up losing my source of income but now I see it has to be done, thanks!
Great video Mr Gaboobily; love your voice and the humor you inject into the video! I will probably also need to adjust the text size because i'm [redacted] yrs old. Cheers!
First video!!! Very excited for you!!! :D
Probably gonna pick this up next time it goes on sale, looks very interesting
A great tutorial video, without any spoilers. Two thumbs up!!!
This helped a lot. Great video! I've been stuck on this game for a long time!
Fantastic video man. I got the game on the sale and I absolutely love it, I have about 5 hours in it and while I don't feel lost I think this will help Quite a bit. The first time I died then started my second game and found my body to study had me laughing hard
I gasped when you showed how to see the next challenge. I had no idea.
Great video, man. It didn't even occur to me that I could check the timer card for what was going to happen next.
Cultist simulator is like a game of solitaire but the draw pile is in the other dimension, the suits came from some HPMinecraft dude and the bet is your soul
Thanks, man. I'm like 10 hours in and still didn't know half of this stuff. They really ought to make a tutorial of sorts.
9:03 is the recap I keep needing to come back too.
That helps a lot since I wasn't sure if some of the cards were supposed to be good or bad.
Awesome video Mr.G!!
AMAZING! I learned more here in 13 minutes than that "other" annoying dude that has 40+ videos. Just give me the basic tools and let me figure out the rest. Just what I was looking for, THANKYOU!
pretty sure I know exactly who you're talking about lol
Thanks, that really shed some light on stuff.
God I wish there was an option to autopause when an action finishes.
Really nice, helpful and funny while avoiding spoilers thanks!
This should be an official tutorial! Can't thank you enough!!!!!!!
Second game i played, i was playing the dancer as my character, keept dancing and dancing, had lots of money, got my skills as max as possible. Ended up winning without ever even starting a cult (even if it was a minor victory)
Thanks for the tips!
Love the tutorial without major spoilers 🙂
This is exactly what I needed!
holy shit, i love this guy.
Really helpful and compact! Thanks!
This is so underrated for how good it is
Wow what a great spoiler free walkthrough....👏
Awesomeeeeeee video instant sub
Wow what an really well done video. 10/10 🙂
this video was helpful for me, who has 7 hours on this game (bc people told me to just play and learn as i go) and who still sucks. my biggest problem is i keep dying (mostly of dread) and also that i have no money. im going to try again though with this in mind and see how i do :D
I believe that dreaming with money (opium) is NOT guaranteed to yield a contentment. It has a high chance of contentment, but you can also get an affliction or dread.
the sickness event usually kicks in as a side effect while still producing contentment. never seen it make dread, but I really only take that option as a last resort
well done!
Thank you so much for this!
What. What? What?!?
You can anticipate events by examining Time Passes?!!??!??!?!?!?!???!?!?!?!?!!!?!?!
Oh okay that's very helpful thank you.
shame it seems like he doesnt stream any more as well as this was his only video. it was really well done and would of loved more details/videos
Thank you, you're doing a Cult work here.
Great video, thank you so much!
Ok, with this I think I could actually pick up this game and maybe not die right away.
My issue is i die before getting anywhere. I find it difficult managing every aspect and find myself focusing on work and art to realise I have 2 people in my cult, lots of reason and passion, oh lets go on this expidition so I can... CRAP DREAD!
"Choose your favorite"
*slowly points to Moth lore*
*sweating intensifies*
We don't talk about the snip snip snip, here at the Wildwood Club.
Funny! Good tips for this "different" game.
Wish i had this video at the time i started. :D Good work and i still learned something. -> Doubleclick! i didn't know about this. Thanks. ^^
Good video
Congratulations to 100 subs 🎉
You rock! 🤘🏻
Love your style man 😘👍
9:23 I don't know if you've heard or not, but I have some friend who are rappers. They tell me never hide your crimes in your art...
10:45 the higher power is MatPat?!
5:28 timestamping this to get back to this part in case i need a refresher
im 5 hours in and havent died yet but I've killed a few people and now I'm a board member, I paused and now I'm learning lol
starting with physician is best because it gives you stable income
I literally understood none of that but here I go to start my first playthrough anyways.
I'm still confused, I think I'm stupid
So am I lol
K yeah I hope this helps because I was starting to get frustrated not knowing what to do
I subscribed to you here and on twitch for the streamer joke.
I had 4 dread and was wondering if it was bad guess it was
OK is there a college course I can take on this game. I'm SO LOST!!! 😂
You are funny. I subscribed based on yours and your character's name alone.
I slap that pause button like it owes me money. (It does)
Why did you have to put a period after your name?
I bought and tried this game for a few hours and I love it, but also I feel like I dont have enough brain cells to play it.
I subbed for your name alone
Can anyone tell me how to do painting?
Great video but that was A LOT!!! I might need to watch on slow to understand. This tutorial made me feel so dumb. So many words that I didn't understand. Super awesome video though
God thank you so much! i was so overwlemed cause se game doesnt explai anything!!!!
Wait. There is no RNG in tthis game??
This game is honestly brutally difficult. Probably the hardest game I've played. It's not for me. And i feel bad for spending money on it.
I've tried it for a week and still can't get anywhere, I deleted it afterwards
im at min 4 and im already confused
Why is this only 720p when it's a text based card game :(
