Me and my friends managed to super cool a bottle of Coke and some beer canson our trip to Finland over New Year on accident by leaving it out of the cabin overnight at -15°C because the fride was full.
So, this is more easily explained by lore. Elsa's freezing power fully unlocked because of the shock of betrayal by her ancestors, and she froze herself, i.e. overwhelmed her own body with her power. As for her unfreezing, something about curses, ley lines, and shock enabling her to re-establish control.
Matpat, there is a simpler explanation: *If love thaws, then hate freezes.* What she saw down there was literally an act of true hate and it froze her.
I read the scene like this: the cave wasn’t freezing her directly. It was draining her magic. Without magic, she isn’t impervious to the temperature anymore. It also more accurately explains why Olaf got dusted. Not because she died, but because her last bit of magic was just barely keeping her alive. Even for this movie, bringing someone back from the dead is a bit of a stretch.
i kind of assumed elsa freezing was a “punishment” for “going too far,” rather than it was really cold because she started getting all frosty like anna did and anna was being frozen by magic

in a way, the impact was probably her seeing this super disturbing truth about her past and people that "shook" her emotionally, and that's what supercooled her. in the first movie, it's intense negative emotions that offset her ice powers. so in response, she tries to stay as cool and collected and emotionless as possible. and now, although she is much happier and is able to express herself and be more emotionally open and is able to self regulate her emotions better, seeing the ambush on her people is what messes her up and she breaks (in this case, freezes). idk lol

it’s the irony of her being frozen solid. “go too far and you’ll drown” she went too far past the light and into the darkness and she drowned in her own power. it became a curse bc she went too far. it’s not a matter of temperature, it’s the magic. it even says the line “go too far and you’ll drown” right before she jumps, indicating that she’s *going too far*. she’s so caught up in the voice (which is her mother by the way) that not only does she go too far, she forgets about the other cast. super-cooling is cool tho.
logically and from a movie standpoint, its pretty clear that elsa lost control of her power and it completely overwhelmed her. but thats not what the theory was about. it is specifically looking at the temperatures that didnt bother her, and then scientifically what could have caused her to freeze after it was established that finding the cave's temperature was not an option
Ciaran Gale yeah but he completely ignores that it’s not about temperatures. he ignores the entire point of her being frozen which was magic, not science. he says the reason he makes this theory is to see why elsa freezes when it’s very clear that she freezes bc of magic and her “going too far”
Ciaran Gale this movie is also a kids movie purely built on the idea of love and magic and doesn’t try to bring scientific reasoning into any of it Bc, I’ll say it again, it’s a kids movie about love and magic. Not actually, because the movie actually supports the theory. Don’t go too far or you’ll drown” probably means that she’ll drown in her own powers, and if her power is a super chilled body, then yes, she was technically killed or “drowned” by her own powers. The “don’t go too far” part also might mean for her to not go too far down, warning that she might freeze due to the impact.
About the location thing, there might be some relevant folklore in Arendal irl that explains why they chose that location, but as a Norwegian it always struck me as weird. Having lived in Bergen for 4 months now and having watched the movies just a week ago, I can't vouch for the inspiration from Bergen. I also find it weird with Arendal when it comes to geography, since Arendal is one of the most southern places in all of Norway, and we mostly think of it as a place with sun and warm summers. However, watching the movie with 2 friends, we all thought that the climate looked more like northern norway, where winters are usually around -30 celius and iirc -25 fahrenheit. Geographically, the fjord around Arendelle looks a lot like Sognefjorden or Geiranger, which is considered to be in western norway, but is also a fair bit more north, around 300km or 190 miles to Sognefjorden and 430km or 250 miles to Geiranger. So all in all they are kind of all over the place. Arendal would at least never get the kind of snow you see in the movie, and the ice haulers in frozen 2 and the reindeer is also only really in the northernmost bit of Norway, where Norwegians and Sami become more blended together. Lastly, the glacier island from Frozen 2 might be inspired by Svalbard, a large Norwegian island far north of Norway, however, they would've had to change the distance as they often do, since it is pretty far away.
As a Dane I must clarify that calling the sea “The Nordsøen” is the same as calling it “The The North Sea”. The “-en” at the end of Nordsøen is the same as putting “the” in front of The North Sea.

I just want to say, the “Don’t go to far or you’ll drown” warning is so unfair, because Elsa was required to go “too far” in order to find out the truth, so does that mean she was destined to be frozen and almost killed?
Actually I have an answer to this. She didn't have to jump and "go too far" when she did, because just before that she was given enough information and could just use her common sense to figure it out. Anna was able to figure it out just by seeing one scene, no words were there to explain anything or give her the answer: dam. Elsa essentially knew the same thing from them talking (in words) that Anna saw in a single moment (in a picture).
No no, the song was sung by the ppl. The ppl warned her from going too far either cause they didn't want her to drawn (like her mother) or they didn't want her to know the truth (like her grandfather) nature actually needed her to go deep
My understanding is yes. Because a bridge cannot be complete without a 2nd end - Anna. For Elsa to find the truth she had to "go too far", send the message to Anna that would result in her doing "The Next Right Thing"
Elsa : "The cold never bothered me anyway" The same Elsa in Frozen Fever : *catches a cold* Again, the EXACT SAME ELSA in Frozen 2 : *freezes* Me : "Uhhh, okayyyyy...."
She froze to death because she is the fifth spirit and the wrong is still not righted so she died; Or because she needed to die first to be reborn as the fifth spirit.
The cold doesn't bother her, she dove deep down in a memory and in ahtohallan (where her powers originated from because of the spirits and you know the rest) her powers turned on her because she knew to much...
Her powers didn't turn on her, they're not evil. They just became so powerful (like she says in the first song ) that she couldn't control them anymore and she got overwhelmed. The reason she unfroze was because Anna actually has some kind of powers too...Just more subtle. She's the other end of the bridge, as she said. So when she set things rights, helped.
Exactly what I was thinking, which made me frustrated at the fact matpat didn't factor that in. She dove down too deep and "drowned" like what the song her mother sang says: "Dive down deep into her sound ...But not too far or you'll be drowned"
I think It was less of a literal freeze, more of a magic freeze from "going too deep" into Atahala, since no one person is probably supposed to be able to go far enough to know everything. That's what I think anyway.
I think in Attohallan if you know too much you're defeated by what you aren't supposed to be defeated by. In Elsa's case, she can't freeze to death, but she knew too much from Attohallan so she almost died from what could never defeat her
Yeah I don't think this film theory guy actually WATCHED the movie. Just heard some things about it and started critiquing those points. It embarrassing to watch this
Why are people commenting things like this? He obviously already knew about the song! Matpat watches movies that he makes theories on at least 2 or 3 times! He makes these theories for only educational, scientific, and over all just for fun purposes!
Matpat: Elsa: The cold never bothered me anyway Also Elsa: *Froze to death* Me: Elsa: I'm never going back, the past is in the past Also Elsa: *Literally went back to check the past*
Well with “The Cold Never Bothered Me Anyway” there is 2 ways I think why that happened 1 it was Sub Zero. Basiclly “Sub Zero” is when it gets so so so so so so so cold that atoms stop moving (in solids the atoms vibrate and move a little) so she froze 2 the more likely one... it isn’t real ice. It’s a form of magic that she can’t control. Just it replicates ice. It’s a completely different type all together. Possibly even a type of Crystal
Gaby the Potato King So did I! The Autohalen Nursery Rhyme said “Not to deep or you’ll be drowned”. So I thought she’d just gone to deep and that’s what they meant.

People getting sick in winter doesn't even have to do with it being cold. People get sick because more people are cooped up inside and germs spread easier when people are together. Common misconception. So Else's cold isn't because of the cold.
Its magic. Remember the one song with this line "go to far and you'll drown" for Elsa, she freezes, cause magic. But that's just a theory, not a matpat theory,
I saw it as her tapping too much into her power and it overwhelming her, so she lost her cold immunity and her powers attacked her at the same time. Insta-freeze
I thought that too! In my mind her powers were taking over her because of her fear and dissapointment in her grandfathers actions. That’s what Grand Pabbie warned Anna about, about Elsa’s powers becoming too strong
Before I get to the theory, I have my own. Elsa's resistance to cold is just that. Resistance. She's not impervious to cold, she's just very resistant. The literally frozen river that is Ahtohallan is just too cold for Elsa. The river spirit is where her power comes from. Since she is human, she doesn't have as much power as a regular spirit. Her body acts like a dampener, which in turn makes her power less than that of the river spirit, so the river spirit can technically make it colder than what Elsa can withstand, which is *very very very* cold.
I agree. And you'd have to assume everything every character in the movie says is just fucking cannon, like they know all the fucking answers in the goddamn universe. You gotta take what they say into context and with a grain of salt. Keep in mind that they are just as new to their adventure as we are when we first watch it. Okay I'm done
Grace Talbot I was kind of laughing the whole time. He’s not wrong in his criticism of the movie but the whole concept of this video is off. It’s not like it was so cold she froze solid. It was magic. Just magic
Technically, Elsa is the fifth element, but she's more of a bridge, as mentioned in the movie. So it's not really about what she controls and how, but rather the fact that her parents are Northuldra AND Arendellian.
If her body is made of ice she'll melt, if she is covered in ice the ice would melt as long as you don't focus the blowtorch only on one spot which would melt the ice and her flesh. Also take this with a grain of salt not an actual scientist so I could be wrong

@@aquatofana1944 i didnt make it clear, but from what the movie shows the horse ( 'Nokk.' I think?) controls the water. When i wrote it, i meant it used its powers to sink the ship.
That would be dark, but Elsa specifically says that SHE woke the spirits of the forest when Anna asks her after Arendelle is forced to evacuate. The movie doesn't go into much detail of exactly how she did that and its implications (since it seems like the Northuldra are familiar with the rock giants, but not the fire spirit), but that line of dialogue implies that the 4 spirits have been dormant since the forest was closed off by the fog. Like I said, the movie isn't super clear or consistent on that fact, so it's still up for interpretation.
Once, I went to a deli (where the water bottles were super cold) and accidentally kept supercooling all the water bottles. I would keep taking them to the counter and they would be frozen. I finally realized after I froze the last bottle
Honestly, I think it was decent. Not really Disney level, but still good and just needed the script to be tightened some. Raise the stakes a bit, give the quest a more convincing send off, give more backstory with the Imperial fallout (like maybe let us get to know the king before Hansing him), and maybe cut out the middle melodramatic part about the proposal B plot(I'm particularly thinking change the wagon scene, and the convo when they first get into the woods(Anna is way too smart to be as ditzy as she was in those scenes), and make Lost in the Woods into something that actually makes sense for the tone of the movie).
All I could think of in the beginning of the video when the ice “smiled” was, “It cracked a smile” :)

Elsa essentially knew the same thing from them talking (in words) that Anna saw in a single moment (in a picture).
yes.
No no, the song was sung by the ppl. The ppl warned her from going too far either cause they didn't want her to drawn (like her mother) or they didn't want her to know the truth (like her grandfather) nature actually needed her to go deep
Alsa froze her self to find the truth
My understanding is yes.
Because a bridge cannot be complete without a 2nd end - Anna.
For Elsa to find the truth she had to "go too far", send the message to Anna that would result in her doing "The Next Right Thing"
"that weird fire lizard." MatPat I'm surprised at you. It's a salamander.

꧁༺Sophie Jade༻꧂ huh that’s a really cool take on it!! I never thought of it like that
Her powers didn't turn on her, they're not evil. They just became so powerful (like she says in the first song ) that she couldn't control them anymore and she got overwhelmed.
The reason she unfroze was because Anna actually has some kind of powers too...Just more subtle. She's the other end of the bridge, as she said. So when she set things rights, helped.

I think in Attohallan if you know too much you're defeated by what you aren't supposed to be defeated by.

Well with “The Cold Never Bothered Me Anyway” there is 2 ways I think why that happened
1 it was Sub Zero. Basiclly “Sub Zero” is when it gets so so so so so so so cold that atoms stop moving (in solids the atoms vibrate and move a little) so she froze
2 the more likely one... it isn’t real ice. It’s a form of magic that she can’t control. Just it replicates ice. It’s a completely different type all together. Possibly even a type of Crystal

Sounds legit
I agree. And you'd have to assume everything every character in the movie says is just fucking cannon, like they know all the fucking answers in the goddamn universe. You gotta take what they say into context and with a grain of salt. Keep in mind that they are just as new to their adventure as we are when we first watch it. Okay I'm done

Technically, Elsa is the fifth element, but she's more of a bridge, as mentioned in the movie. So it's not really about what she controls and how, but rather the fact that her parents are Northuldra AND Arendellian.

Here’s a thought: when Elsa freezes, if you decide to use a blowtorch on her or something, will just the ice melt or would Elsa melt with it?
That's a very good question
Yes
*grabs a blowtorch*
well that depends on the temperature plus how much of her body freezes
If her body is made of ice she'll melt, if she is covered in ice the ice would melt as long as you don't focus the blowtorch only on one spot which would melt the ice and her flesh. Also take this with a grain of salt not an actual scientist so I could be wrong

Oh my god, dude. That's darker than my theory about Elsa's Powers. Which is pretty dark. I'm scared that I agree with you
At first I thought that, but when the water showed the memory of when they died, they were still inside the ship.
*Nokk
Its not "ice power" that freezes her, its the magic of ahtohallan warning,

Honestly, I think it was decent. Not really Disney level, but still good and just needed the script to be tightened some. Raise the stakes a bit, give the quest a more convincing send off, give more backstory with the Imperial fallout (like maybe let us get to know the king before Hansing him), and maybe cut out the middle melodramatic part about the proposal B plot(I'm particularly thinking change the wagon scene, and the convo when they first get into the woods(Anna is way too smart to be as ditzy as she was in those scenes), and make Lost in the Woods into something that actually makes sense for the tone of the movie).
