Man, I have been in my current soul sucking career for the last 22 years. I would absolutely love to get out of it and do something different but i have no skills and no extra money and a family to raise. I have recently found wood working and have free access to many necessary tools, and an endless supply of free pallets. I don't care if I make any money at it, I am finding it so refreshing to learn it, at my own pace. My littlest one, my light, loves to join me in the shed as well. I only recently discovered your videos and I thank you for them. They are a blessing through a very mentally difficult time for me. Thank you for being so encouraging dude. You rock.
Small steps. Make small things that match your skill level and try things that are a bit more challenging to enhance your knowledge. Remember you learn not only from succeeding but also from failure. If something does not go right work through the problem. What went wrong where? Be careful of pallet wood and stray nails or embedded metal.
@@shawnr771 thank you so much for the advice. I am definitely learning just by using. As a musician I understand the slow and steady process of success by failure..XD. As for the pallet wood, I disassemble them with a crowbar and or skill saw, I pull all of the nails. Never thought of the potential of stray metal. I have a metal detector so maybe I will go over the wood with it just to be sure.
@@johnsonfamily889A stack of strong magnets will find anything that is ferrous. I use Rare Earth magnets Neomydium(sp). Used to be able to buy them at HD in the fastner section. But they have been out lately. If you do get them do not let your little ones play with them. When they attract they attract and can pinch skin. Larger ones will make you bleec they are not toys.
Hey Johnson Family. I agree with Shawn! And don't say you have no skills... say I'm learning a new skill. Keep negativity out of your life... even with something as simple as wording. You mentioned your little one joining you in the shop... That... is... awesome! And the best motivator a parent can have. If nothing else learn so that you can teach. So great to have the use of the woodworking equipment and pallets. Find a beginner project and get to it. Learn as you go and push yourself to grow every day... you'll see that it changes your whole outlook on everything. Great to have you here!

Absolutely love it. "The only thing I can't do is things I haven't tried" I've recently just started doing some great woodworking projects. Starting off small as the only real experience I've had is cutting dimensional lumber for construction purposes. I have been watching a lot of your videos, and you all on your own, have been an inspiration to me. For that I thank you!

Thanks for this video. Ive got so many ideas for projects. From beer caddies to wine racks to charcuterie boards. Just finding the one or two ideas that stand out. I guess its the fear of not succeeding thats holding me back. Ive started woodworking with in the last 5 years so still learning about woodworking. But have so many ideas that I've seen on UA-cam and putting my own twist on them. Hello Matthew, I just wanted to take the time and comment on one of your videos. For a couple weeks now I have been spending a lot of time absorbing the information you provide from your channel. I haven't found what I wanted to say until I watched this video of yours this morning. You have helped me to discover a passion of mine and rekindle a drive I may have forgotten in my young adulthood. I am currently 27 YO working at a chocolate factory making ends meet but obviously not doing something I love. I have always had an interest in carpentry/woodworking not pursuing doing so because lack of mentorship as well as funds. Being autistic has also had challenges in store for me, though I'm very ambitious and detail oriented I have always struggled with getting started with something new like the information was not given correctly or withheld from me. The way you teach woodworking has really caught my interest and I'm learning a lot so much even though I can't yet put it into practice. You genuinely care about your subscribers weather they can be successful in this line of work. The way you talk about motivation is so great buddy it is definitely noticed I'm sure I speak for others when I say I appreciate your content and will share my work with you once I can get my tools together if that is alright with you. Love your work mate, just remember you can be as successful as anybody else can be. With the right attitude even autism can be a strength! Nothing wrong with the DIYers starting to make money on the side, unfortunately some or most UNDER PRICE their item's and don't understand that profit isn't a bad word...in doing so they KILL the market for those of us that make a living from doing our craft . Great to let them know about material cost , tools, time etc. We have a family run sign/wood working shop and its painful to see an item that we have factored in ALL the costs and sell an item say for 250 - 300 dollars and they do a similar item for 50...We see it often and after doing the breakdown knowing ALL cost involved they are working for 10 cents an hour. Thanks and welcome! Yea that has been an issue since everyone seems to be buying equipment... I believe they buy on credit... realize the market is flooded... and have to just try to make a payment. It kills the market for everyone! What you have to focus on is changing your items up... they have copied your item and now your being forced to change it... So shake it up... get creative... think outside of the box! Do what most others cant... be different. Thanks for following!
Another aspect of low prices that a lot of people aren't keeping in mind...... CNC machines. So many of those "low" prices are directly connected to mass production. I absolutely hate that someone can make the same thing I do without any work and in 1/10th of the time. That is what kills people who do woodworking, not a person that's trying to get in the game by selling low to start off.

I build kitchen cabinets in an area where nothing but trash cabinets are in almost every newish house.. Mostly I replace MDF doors and drawers with real wood.. Easy to make, cheap and they sell well.. Another thought..If you're looking for machinery, saws. drill presses, planers, etc. Be willing to travel your entire state or several states. I've bought a joiner, bandsaw, planer, dust collection system and other items all from craigslist for pennies on the dollar because I was willing to spend an afternoon driving.. Same goes for supplies if you can find a good enough deal. I buy kiln dried cypress for about $1.50 per BF, but I have to go get it.. Same boards I buy sell at the hardwood dealer in town for 8 times the price..

Just smashed the sub button!! I've been doing driftwood projects I used to do it for fun but everyone's wanting me to do one now. It's mostly time . Sanding staining poly and boat riding looking for nice pieces to work on.
Matt as usually nice video and advice. I sell a lot at craft shows and have a hard time getting good money for stuff. I love it when someone wants a item that is bigger then I normally make because they will pay a lot more for it.
I will do a video on craft shows. Theres a different marketing strategy for those. Smalls are the key. $20 or less and have demos of at least one of your big items... will get people asking "can you make..."
You show a lot of passion and pride in what you do. That’s awesome! Well done. I’ve been thinking about carpentry for a long time since I was a young teen, grandfather was one and wanted to be my own version of him. Some people need to hear that passion in what you do matters more than the money and I think you incorporated that very well into your message.

I've been creating and making original wood and metal pieces of all types for 50 years and your advice on pricing can apply broadly to custom work. If I spend time conceiving and making a one of a kind piece there is still a market limit on what I can charge for it
Fuckin right man. I got real sick with Covid and gave up a decent job I had running a retail store. Had the job 8 years, was great at it. Couldn't keep doing it, it was killing me. Now I'm starting out in woodworking. I feel I'm doing great work. Doing different work that looks great! When people buy it they tell me they're buying it because it looks great. You got it right. I'm glad as hell I found your channel. I learned a bit ago that you can make what everyone else is making all you want and youll have a house full of stuff you made. But if you make stuff you want to make, put yourself in it, you'll make money. That's what I'm doing. Why would I be doing it if I didn't bring anything special to doing it. Thanks man. Gotta keep the fire going.
I always find it challenging to determine how long it will take. So I take cost, rounded up, times 4 or 5. That don't always work , but for me, It works 90%of the time.
Great advice at the end their bud! I learn more from mistakes than anything else but it helps to recognize that vs getting discouraged and give up. Keep truckin' forward:)

I find it strange people are willing to pay when shopping on Etsy or elsewhere. But when I sell on craigslist or nextdoor, they don't see me as a business and want to pay 1/3 of the price online. Like buying directly from the maker, they want to pay for the true cost of the item and 2/3 of the online price is overhead

I just want to thank you for your tutorials and for motivating me to step outside my comfort zone and try something new I've always had an interest in woodworking and I've over the last few months had a little extra money so I've been buying some tools and started trying some simple projects they look a little rough but the more that I play with it the better my skill set gets and I think I'm getting close to try to start selling things on marketplace

Small cheap projects.... CBG's cigar box guitars. Total cost of material, wood, cigar box, guitar tuners, guitar strings all under $20. Take about 2 hours to make a basic slide box guitar and sell anywhere from $60 to $100!!!! East to make also. Wood making skills from 10 being master builder 1 being brand new its about a 3 or 4 on difficulty.

"Besides having a baby"....just sprayed my monitor with my drink! Bwa ha ha ha ha ha! A few years ago, I made a beautiful jewelry box for this lady I was seeing. Solid red oak, velvet lined drawers, top notch everything. I probably had $350 in materials in this alone. A couple years later I'm strolling through Walmart or Sam's and see someone jacked the plans, mass produced the same thing I made and was selling it for $40 at the stores. Lesson learned. The girl, yeah she went psycho so I ended up giving it to my mom, who still proudly uses it. Yet another, lesson learned.

People must be more willing to pay more for wood projects than they were about 30 years ago. I built a biplane shelf back then and it was hard to sell them for $35. They were 3-1/2' long made of 1x8 and had a working propeller made of mahogany. When I say working I mean if you put a fan in front of it it would spin.

Yea thats a tough one. I would check with local mills that kiln dry lumber. They are usually the best for buying "seconds". Other than that your kinda stuck. I get alot of my material from facebook marketplace.
First off, I like your videos. Second, I'm a bit of a logic nerd. I got a bit tripped up on the phrase in this video, "the only things I can't do are things I haven't tried." Did you mean to say, "the only things I can't do are things I WON'T try?"
Pricing is easy. Just look at what everybody else is charging for similar products/work, and then price yours cheaper. That's it, people try to make it way more complicated than it needs to be!
Or make it different enough and sell it for more... there's a little more too it than just underbidding your competition... that's why some items are selling for around cost.
Great video!! I have a question, maybe you or someone can help, I made a custom drawer for a guy that is moving And somehow someone threw out the drawer 🤷🏻♀️. So wondering how to charge for that; it took me 8hrs probably because I was figuring stuff out, but i did have to use my round over bit and a straight bit to make the drawer finish, It’s a 18” x 20” I had the materials and just got pine to make the front, but making the detail was the main thing, thanks!!!
Good info, but honestly, this is mostly common sense. It boils down to simply covering your costs and adding the amount you feel your time and skill is worth.

Matt as usually nice video and advice. I sell a lot at craft shows and have a hard time getting good money for stuff. I love it when someone wants a item that is bigger then I normally make because they will pay a lot more for it.
I will do a video on craft shows. Theres a different marketing strategy for those. Smalls are the key. $20 or less and have demos of at least one of your big items... will get people asking "can you make..."
You show a lot of passion and pride in what you do. That’s awesome! Well done. I’ve been thinking about carpentry for a long time since I was a young teen, grandfather was one and wanted to be my own version of him. Some people need to hear that passion in what you do matters more than the money and I think you incorporated that very well into your message.

I've been creating and making original wood and metal pieces of all types for 50 years and your advice on pricing can apply broadly to custom work. If I spend time conceiving and making a one of a kind piece there is still a market limit on what I can charge for it

Fuckin right man. I got real sick with Covid and gave up a decent job I had running a retail store. Had the job 8 years, was great at it. Couldn't keep doing it, it was killing me. Now I'm starting out in woodworking. I feel I'm doing great work. Doing different work that looks great! When people buy it they tell me they're buying it because it looks great. You got it right. I'm glad as hell I found your channel. I learned a bit ago that you can make what everyone else is making all you want and youll have a house full of stuff you made. But if you make stuff you want to make, put yourself in it, you'll make money. That's what I'm doing. Why would I be doing it if I didn't bring anything special to doing it. Thanks man. Gotta keep the fire going.

I always find it challenging to determine how long it will take. So I take cost, rounded up, times 4 or 5. That don't always work , but for me, It works 90%of the time.

I find it strange people are willing to pay when shopping on Etsy or elsewhere. But when I sell on craigslist or nextdoor, they don't see me as a business and want to pay 1/3 of the price online. Like buying directly from the maker, they want to pay for the true cost of the item and 2/3 of the online price is overhead

I just want to thank you for your tutorials and for motivating me to step outside my comfort zone and try something new I've always had an interest in woodworking and I've over the last few months had a little extra money so I've been buying some tools and started trying some simple projects they look a little rough but the more that I play with it the better my skill set gets and I think I'm getting close to try to start selling things on marketplace

I just started out and making elevated garden beds.
Small cheap projects.... CBG's cigar box guitars. Total cost of material, wood, cigar box, guitar tuners, guitar strings all under $20. Take about 2 hours to make a basic slide box guitar and sell anywhere from $60 to $100!!!! East to make also. Wood making skills from 10 being master builder 1 being brand new its about a 3 or 4 on difficulty.

A few years ago, I made a beautiful jewelry box for this lady I was seeing. Solid red oak, velvet lined drawers, top notch everything. I probably had $350 in materials in this alone. A couple years later I'm strolling through Walmart or Sam's and see someone jacked the plans, mass produced the same thing I made and was selling it for $40 at the stores. Lesson learned. The girl, yeah she went psycho so I ended up giving it to my mom, who still proudly uses it. Yet another, lesson learned.

People must be more willing to pay more for wood projects than they were about 30 years ago. I built a biplane shelf back then and it was hard to sell them for $35. They were 3-1/2' long made of 1x8 and had a working propeller made of mahogany. When I say working I mean if you put a fan in front of it it would spin.
simplify it. not every decor wants an airplane shelf.

Yea thats a tough one. I would check with local mills that kiln dry lumber. They are usually the best for buying "seconds". Other than that your kinda stuck. I get alot of my material from facebook marketplace.

Did you mean to say, "the only things I can't do are things I WON'T try?"
Pricing is easy. Just look at what everybody else is charging for similar products/work, and then price yours cheaper. That's it, people try to make it way more complicated than it needs to be!
Or make it different enough and sell it for more... there's a little more too it than just underbidding your competition... that's why some items are selling for around cost.

Great video!! I have a question, maybe you or someone can help, I made a custom drawer for a guy that is moving And somehow someone threw out the drawer 🤷🏻♀️. So wondering how to charge for that; it took me 8hrs probably because I was figuring stuff out, but i did have to use my round over bit and a straight bit to make the drawer finish,
It’s a 18” x 20” I had the materials and just got pine to make the front, but making the detail was the main thing, thanks!!!

Good info, but honestly, this is mostly common sense. It boils down to simply covering your costs and adding the amount you feel your time and skill is worth.
