    • @wheetcracker
      @wheetcracker 5 років тому +28

      @Destro I work in power electronics. We build large power converters and use zip ties almost exclusively for cable management. This is entirely because our equipment is often subjected to environments with a lot of shaking and vibration. Wires have to be really secure so that they can't vibrate, wear through their insulation, and short out. It's especially important given that we're talking voltages up to 1000vdc. Unsecured wires can literally cause fires lol.
      My point was that zip ties are very much a professional tool. They're just not optimal for applications like ethernet runs where the wires are stationary, the voltages are low, and they need to be easily disassembled.

      @@shaun4bigblocksllc, I would say that is a big no, though I understand your point. Proper tools allow for far more consistency and a better finish to your work, but it doesn't magically make it easy for just anyone to do a job. Skills are required in any case. I can carve something out of wood with a butter knife, the finish will be poor and it will be very difficult and time intensive... when I could have just used proper sharp/shaped carving tools. The real skill would be the carving, not making things needlessly difficult.

      @No Akomplice dude you just sound like a pathetic jealous idiot, calm down, take a second and pick you dummy back up off the floor. They make videos the way the do because people enjoy watching them, they make things look "janky" because it gets reactions and comments, boosting viewer interactions, helping boost their UA-cam page.

    • @JimBob1937
      @JimBob1937 5 років тому +17

      @No Akomplice, he did a fairly competent job measuring and recreating the board and mounting holes in CAD software as well as getting basic CNC routing done. The issue more so stems from lacking the proper tools I think, but as mentioned, the cost of tools can quickly add up. If you feel like he is being lazy, please explain where, I see no laziness per se, just lacking proper tools and time constraints. There is no doubt they could do better in a lot of their DIY projects, but they're not engineers. I also suspect, just like Jake, that part of their DIY video charm is actually because they're non-engineers trying to produce things usually done by engineers. This average joe approach likely gets them more views, and I wouldn't be surprised if they purposely play into that role.

      If they don’t want to take out their wallets to buy a real milling machine for commercial use.
      Then they could at least have bought something like this:
      www.proxxon.com/en/micromot/24360.php
      It cannot process large plates, but it does so much better for precision parts such as water cooling blocks and does not cost a huge amount.
      And you can even reduce the speed down to 200 rpm. : P

He apparently had it in current mode, which is bad since current probing tries to be as close to a short as possible to not affect the measurement, but apparently it had overcurrent protection. The issue I have is that the power supply is designed for a specific load, and I don't think they measured the watts pulled by the fan and pump to make sure the power supply can handle it, let's hope the engineers put in a good margin for the parts.

    1. Reduce depth of cut, using proper feeds

    3. Use stronger tool on the first pass, then use a second pass with the tool form you wanted.

    You guys should really consider pressure testing these in-house made water loops for future builds.. rather than "wait and see" to see if any leaks develop over time, just get an automotive hose pressure tester or any hand pump really, fill your loop or component with fluid, and give it a couple psi and see if any water seeps out from any of the fittings or o-rings. if it can stand up to not leaking while under pressure, then you know it will have zero issues while under less pressure during normal operation.

      @AdrienSantosCoelho 5 років тому +8

      Even tho I agree to some point a pressured system can have no leaks and when there's only flow and low pressure it can leak. Most rubber seals need pressure to seal be it by the mounting or the fluid. A o'ring for example can seal at pressure and if the mounting is not thigh enough it will let fluid trough at lesser pressure.

      @emu071981 5 років тому +1

      A better idea would be something like the Dr Drop pressure tester where you don't even put water in. You just assemble your loop, attach the pressure gauge and use the pump to put in some pressure. Leave it for a bit and if the pressure remains stable then your loop is good to go. You may need to google to find the kit in stock though and to get a better price (I have seen the kit costing anywhere from $25AUD to $200+). I did look at making my own for testing my own loops but either I overengineered my tester or the maker of the prebuilt kit is getting a volume discount for parts as my kit was costing about double to triple the cost of the prebuilt. :\

    Linus, mills and lathes are expensive when you buy them new.
    You should never buy them new unless you're a metalworking shop (and a lot of them don't even buy them new).

    • @orangerider2827
      @orangerider2827 5 років тому +7

      If you want a decent CNC they simply are going to be expensive. The used machines are either good and still expensive or they are old junk and are relatively still expensive. Mills in my shop are still 100k. They still are not anything special being they are a haas which are the cheaper side of something decent.

    • @TheLtVoss
      @TheLtVoss 5 років тому +2

      @@orangerider2827 well buy an simple and small mill and a cnc conversion kit and and it would cost way less than 100k
      And LTT doesn't need a movement over X500mm Y400mm Z100mm
      a big hobby mill with cnc kit is completely sufficient and cost new around 3k well it is a stack of money but even a private person could afford some thing like that

      @@TheLtVoss While true in the States, I do wonder about how available they are in the frozen north. Sure, I can go down the street and pick up a fully functional used Bridgeport for ~2k that doesn't mean they are available in Canada for that price.

    • @orangerider2827
      @orangerider2827 5 років тому

      @@TheLtVoss yes then you have a non decent mill. If you are buying a manual and planning on converting it your better off with just buying a nice Bridgeport with a digital read out. The manual machines are not tight enough to hold any kind of precision with a cnc conversion. Not that the assembled router that they have is anyways. You want something decent that you can achieve a nice water block isnt going to be done on shotty equipment. Their is a reason some people are machinists and some people are hobbyists. Also have you priced a CNC conversion kit your not buying a new kit and a used mill for 3k. You would have at least 15k in it. Then still have all the problems I've mentioned above. My shop used to have such a machine simply couldnt keep up tolerance wise and no tool changer was a deal breaker now it sits out back under a tarp. Its junk cant sell it for the reason nobody wants it.

    • @TheLtVoss
      @TheLtVoss 5 років тому

      @@orangerider2827 I have learned machining on really old mills and same converted and man 0,005 mm was the highest tolerance for an +50 years old machine is still gread it is just maintenance of the bearings
      And over here in Europe these machines a a still expensive because they they just need same love and cann do the same stuff like ur 100k cnc center (beside automated tool switching) and precision and work under tolerance of 0.001 mm is bull shit because the heat u putt in the workpiece even with cooling
      And theses hobby mills (not the cheap shity ones) Ar the same on precision they a just too small for the most shops
