    I can always use help with yellow shadows. I like working with water colors and can never get the shadows from looking like mud or dirty. I want bright beautiful shadows. I love the idea of colored pencils over watercolor. I will be trying this. Glad if found your channel. Great artist.

    yes, a video on working with yellow would be very useful. Also, is there any information available on using mineral spirits on watercolor paint? specifically, does the solvent affect WC 's archival properties?

    • @LanaGloschatArt
      @LanaGloschatArt  2 роки тому +1

      I’d love to do a yellow tutorial! I use watercolor in the beginning stages as a tool to organize and understand my composition and very little of it shows through in the final piece. With that being said, I never noticed the watercolor reactivating when odorless mineral spirits was applied and I have no reason to suspect it would affect the archival qualities… OMS is regularly mixed in with oil paints and colored pencil with no negative/detrimental effects. I think it’s fine… but I haven’t done any personal in depth testing

    Just curious, did you use solvent on the entire piece or just the background? And I know you used watercolor pencils after the initial watercolor layer, I don’t currently own any, so would I get similar results if I just used regular color pencils? And did you use the watercolor pencils throughout this beautiful piece? Great video! I tried flowers once on Hotpressed Fabriano paper and had real trouble getting a smooth looking petal. Of course I just used the pencils, no watercolor. Do you think you would be able to get a smooth flower on a watercolor paper with just the pencils? Sorry for all the questions! Thank you Lana for your wealth of knowledge!

    • @LanaGloschatArt
      @LanaGloschatArt  2 роки тому +1

      Hey Melissa. For the background I used these materials in this order: watercolor, watercolor pencil (+water), panpastel, colored pencil (+ solvent) plus a little more colored pencil without solvent.
      For the flowers in the front I used these materials in this order: watercolor base layer, colored pencil base layer (plus solvent), colored pencil over the top without solvent.
      You can 100% achieve smooth results without watercolor or watercolor pencils and I have videos (succulents and cactus in my floral playlist) that show this process. I enjoyed using the watercolor and felt that it helped unify the piece and fill in the tooth faster, but you can get similar results without.

    Very helpful tips! Re solvents…. Do you recommend Winsor Newton Pro Marker Blender? Is Gamsol a better blending agent?

    • @LanaGloschatArt
      @LanaGloschatArt  2 роки тому

      Hey thanks! I haven’t used blending markers in years. I hated the smell. I like gamsol and eco house solvents best. But if you are getting good results with the marker and using in a well ventilated space I don’t see a problem.

    I admire your work. I hope you don’t mind me asking about the watercolor pencils you used as underpainting. I saw you brushing color on the pallet. Did you use the dry watercolor pencil on the pallet with textured surface like CaranD’Ache have so that you can just add a little water to make paint? When I break off a piece of my watercolor pencil lead and add a few drops of water, allowing it to soak until an amount of paint is formed, I don’t like the heaviness of it. I’d love to know how you used your watercolor pencils to get an amount of paint.

    • @LanaGloschatArt
      @LanaGloschatArt  2 роки тому +2

      Hey! I love your work too! The very first layer is actually just traditional watercolor. Then after that base layer was established i used the watercolor pencils over the top of the watercolor to get more specific with the shapes/details. I don’t ver turn my water-soluble pencils into paint… if I need paint I just use my traditional watercolor… but I am not super proficient with traditional watercolor. I like using the pencils over the top to refine and then I add water to activate and this helps it integrate with the background. Hope that makes sense. :)

    I cannot do enormous pressure. There are some solvents out there that are not dangerous to breath.

      @@LanaGloschatArt @Lana Gloschat Art , That's true in the case of flammable solvents. The definition of a solvent is a substance capable of dissolving or dispersing one or more other substances. There are water based solvents now especially for polycolor color pencils that is certified non toxic and work very well and no fumes. PS, your work is amazing! I was taught similar tips many years ago using watercolor.
