Put a coat of liquitex clear gesso(15 usd) on any paper(Bristol vellum for example), you will get almost pastel paper texture that will increase your speed and saturation for a really low cost.
Great information, thanks! My favorite is hot press watercolor paper. Similar benefits to marker paper in that you can use watercolor as a base. But it's a good surface regardless.
This is awesome. Not some hour long extended filler video about how the cat knocked their glasses off the desk, so they were blind for half a day, fumbling around like a blind monster, missing the time to pick up the kids and basically just filler to aggressively agitate me. Just got right to the point. Thanks and subbed
I'm so glad I'm not the only one that thinks this way, but you forgot the videos that spend 15 minutes fiddling with the scissors and pencils pointing out the bleedin' obvious - it's a pencil and scissors. We can see that for ourselves - we don't need to be told they are scissors for 15 minutes. The tools should go in a list.
I love sanded papers with my Poly Chromos and Holbeins pencils. Canson XL Dry Mixed Media Sanded Grain is so fun and VERY inexpensive. Takes color pencil very well and I love applying pastel down first and then pencil on top. I can use pastel, then fixative then color pencil, then solvent and then more pencil. I wish it was thicker but it is a great practice paper. I also love Lux Archival as well. It also take mixed dry medias of pastel and color pencil really well. The Poly Chromos feel just like pastel pencils on it. And you can use powder blend so well on it with Poly Chromos.
Thank you so much ! I have 3 of the papers you mentioned.....Bristol vellum, MI Tientes and Pastelmat. I bought a bunch of vintage paper at an artist's estate sale and got several pads of Grumbacher charcoal/ pastel paper. It reminds me of MI Tientes paper so will be experimenting with that paper too.
I have used Krylon flat clear or flat lacquer over work that needs another layer. You must use several very light coats plus holding the spray can farther away. And a hair dryer. When the spray paint droplets dry quick, they add tooth over your work. However, it must be dried thoroughly because the clear surface remains soft for a few hours. The drier the better. Use the heat from the hair dryer. On for a few minutes, allow to cool and reheat once again. Dry times vary per the clear coat thickness. I sometimes have the hair dryer in one hand and the spray paint in the other. Remember, we want tooth. It builds quickly, don't over wet the clear coat. Enjoy !
Another bonus to Dura-Lar, you can intensify colors by adding layers of color on the backside of the film. It helps out if you want to use a slice or tombow eraser to do highlights and want a different color to come through other than white.
I'm working with Aquarell Paper and water mixable color pencils from Faber Castell. The Aquarell Paper comes in different values of grain and is also available in several colors as well. I also work with water based felt tip color pencils for children on the same paper. Using a brush and some water after the first layer of color creates some interesting effects.
Thank you so much for this great summon about paper for colored paper. Bristol, I like to use for graphite, charcoal or gray-scale colored pencil pieces. Pastelmat is just my favorit though the texture both eats the pencils and time. Haven't tried Stonehenge yet, it seems I will like it after your explanations. Folks, if you love drawing & painting, I can highly recommend the membership program of The Virtual Instructor Matt created. Thank you, Matt 😊, Buddy
Thanks Matt, explanation of positive and negatives was great. Saved video. Can you please post this question and answer. Which color pencil type (prisma, faber, caren, et al) you recommend or advise against with less vs more tooth? Also, are mylar drawings framable? Many Thanks, Laura
Best no1: Fabriano Artistico Hot Pressed Extra White. Best no2: Legion Stonhenge Watercolor Hot Pressed. Best no3: Sandpaper 1000 grit, from your local hardwear store. PS These are not the best for beginners, but none would deny, they are THE best, for any other people!
Curious, what is the best surface to have under your page, when using colored pencils? So you don’t punch through… or too smooth, making an effect on how the pencil works?
Hi, Hello Do you think you could talk about which kind of camera is most appropriate to capture colour pencils in the most clear way? I love the grainy texture of love colour pencils. I don't go for smooth blends to get realistic drawings but when I take photos of my drawings of paintings they appear awfully dirty
The paper we use (so many different kinds/names) & color books so many paper feels like “copy paper! Trying to use colored pencils to add lil detail to finished water color paintings but tooth on that paper deeper & even Prisma ones not putting down much color? Ty.
I’ve just started using pastelmat and I’m confused. It eats pencils, the color of paper mixes with the color of a pencil. Still I can see the paper color thru my drawing. Also it does not feel like it can take many layers. And is feels so sandy for colored pencils
Is Strathmore Drawing Heavyweight similar to these papers? Is it good to use with colour pencils where it doesn't finish the expensive pencils quickly? Please advise which paper is similar to the paper used in adult colouring books?
Smoot one such as Strathmore series 300, but series 400 is interesting and series 500 is the best. Arches smooth for watercolour is alcohol good and use by many artists! From Quebec in Canada 🇨🇦 😊
I’ve been drawing in a regular art diary and it has quite a bit of tooth but…. It is layering awfully like at first is was good but it’s just not layering how I want it 😣
I just bought some recycled Bristol paper and I don’t know if it varies by brand but this stuff is horrible! It is nearly impossible to do any blending or shading with this stuff.
Sorry, but it’s false information about there only be a few colors available for Stonehenge paper. It comes in fawn, craft, black, cream, blue, and two different grey colors. Btw, the sheets surface on the gray, black, fawn, craft feels different that the white, cream, and blue.
I think it's the common side effects for some artists because of longer hours of staring while sketching or painting..then eye nerves are usually tired.

Fabriano Artistico Extra White Hot Pressed Watercolor Paper, is also one of the best surfaces for colored pencils.
i like Fabriano Toned paper for colored pencils and pastels.
it's also one of the most expensive! I use it for watercolours because of it's water holding properties but it's way too expensive for pencils.
I wish there were some Pastelmat clone papers because it's so expensive.

Or…use a different color as your baselayer. :)
Oh, I’m sorry. You talked about the Dura-Lur with smooth surface 🫣🤭
I have just started using Dur-lar and I find my drawing has streaks what am I doing wrong .
I love marker paper. I use Prismacolor markers and pencils together. They work great for my classic car drawings.
Thank you! I've always struggled finding paper for my drawing.
I'm working with Aquarell Paper and water mixable color pencils from Faber Castell.

What about water color paper ? I use that a lot for soft pastels.
I use Clairfontaine's Paint One, it is available in several shades for colored pencils, graphite
Strathmore Heavy Mixed Media paper, as well as mixed media board are my faves for colored pencil.

😢I find it so hard to stroke color pencil on velum as it's very smooth..
I just bought some recycled Bristol paper and I don’t know if it varies by brand but this stuff is horrible! It is nearly impossible to do any blending or shading with this stuff.
Did you get the smooth or the vellum one? The smooth one is really difficult for pencils.
Hope you don’t mind me saying, your eyes are beautiful colour
🙋Thanks
Wow sir
Me using paper from walmart:
👁👄👁

Your eyes are so blue, contacts ?
These papers are really expensive plz can you suggest us paper which are inexpensive and also good at the same time
Strathmore smooth Séries 300, if you wish to have a quality of you artworks! And marker Canson XL the Violet cover, Good luck!
If Bristol is too expensive you need to improve your economic situation.
@@Stroggoii brother not everyone are born in America I am from Nepal and my country economy is fucked up
@@Geto456 Bristol is the cheapest quality paper no matter if you're in Monaco or Afghanistan.
From Kenya here, I use Chipboard paper, the grey side, which has various grammage, 250gsm, 300gsm, and 350gsm, which I believe is locally available.
