Fix a sticky motorcycle clutch

- Had a sticky clutch on my yamaha yz250. This is how I fixed it. Sorry about the audio..I had my finger on the MIC.
Basically I took a flat file and ground the ridges off the basket tangs. I made very sure to cut the aluminium at the same angle that it was cut from factory and to hold the file straight. You don't want to take off more aluminium than required because it could make your clutch sloppy. Just take your time and cut down the bumps so the surface of the basket is nice and smooth.
I have done this many times. A grooved basket does not mean you need a new basket. Usually a basket will blow apart if its in real bad shape of course causing a major mess but I have de-grooved a basket and clutch hub a few times before dumping the big money or finding a better one. I have even filed the ends of the fiber discs in a bind. Not everyone has the money for the parts at the time. Good job!
gabe the savage noob
yeah ive done it too...
a littke difference would be dat dere would be a bit more vibrations dan before
They were pretty deep. The aluminium basket is soft and once you start filing and increasing the clearances, it will wear even fast. It's just a temporary fix until you can buy a new basket & hub, but it has held up for me..although I haven't riden as much as I'd like this last year.
the clutch on my farm bike was slipping so I did the same thing plus added a washer to each spring retaining bolt, it has made the clutch feel like new.
Great video, all the symptoms you described fit exactly what has been happening with my bike... When you say that you oiled the components before putting them back on, are you just using the transmission oil you put in your bike?
yeahh the transmission will do its job
Great video. Will be doing this for my 07 rm85 next week
Ever use a ProX hub , it has small oil passage holes throughout the hub much better than stock. Not to expensive either!
unless you can cut the same amount from each piece, you wont have equal load on the plates as you release clutch. Wear and strain on internal parts will be much greater. However, this is a good stop gap until you can afford a new basket. Laying motorcycle on its side, out in the yard, id not approve of but its your motorcycle!!
If you don't cut exactly the same amount it just means that the discs will move until they hit the basket and that some of the stubs on the disc may not touch in some places so the load may be uneven but unless you're racing it shouldn't be of any great concern. Because it's sheer load you can do this until there is not enough basket left and the tangs crack which would take a loooong time. Just make sure the tangs are smooth for clutch release. Yes, I'm simplifying the issue because I don't want to bore you.
Done this to my 1996 YZ250 today, but I didn't file the grooves too much... But I also put all new clutch plates in
Looks interesting
I have heard also of sanding the steel plates ?
what do you think would work better ?
or should i try both ?
Thanks Triden, this is a great video and explanation. I hoped it would help me understand why I cannot shift upward into neutral when the bike is stopped. Like when I pull into my garage. Still in 1st, with clutch lever pulled, it seems "locked" into 1st. But if I hit the kill switch, it slides right into neutral. I replaced the clutch plates & springs but no change.
+Peter Poggi Hey Peter, Did you end up filing your clutch bell down? I have the same issue. Did that fix it?
did u hapoen to open ure crankcase?
maybe uve xperience wat happend to my DT125...
might try to pull-push d clutch hub,, if ders a wide side play den myt be a loose primary drive shaft (connected to d clutch hub)...
in my bike der was a missing washer on d shaft so i put one and try it din so dat was actualy d problem...
now that you filed the groves it will wear faster now.
This stingy kid should have bough a basket. Baskets are not expensive
@@theprofessional5932 eh, for an old clutch though? or just do a quick fix, ride it for a couple years and do a complete clutch kit on it.
Other then that the bike runs pretty good but the clutch is either dragging or slipping or just jamming in between gears sometimes when I shift
i did the samething to mine and it helps alittle bit
i just got a bike has the exact same problem and i knew it was a clutch problem just not sure what it was. Thanks
What a beautiful grass
Are the plates complicated to put back in
I agree , totally a good fix !
Brother, facing issue on my ktm. Unable to find neutral when hot. and shifts become hard. any guess??
What could be causing my clutch to not disengage even when pulled in, on the first start of the day after its sitting overnight? i have to pull the clutch in kick the engine over to disengage the clutch then it works without issues throughout the day...
Lucky Luciano
ive xperience dat too...
ive checked my clutchhub but no wear...
d only thing ive found was d gear oil ive used had been sticky over time...
dont know why...
Change your oil more often and put the right oil in. Sounds like once your engine oil warms up it’s fine.
I have a 2006 Honda crf250r and I'm new to it coming off a crf100f (both 4 strokes) and I've stalled my clutch a good amount of times, but now sometimes everytime I shift the clutch seems to get jammed and slow down the bike and over rev its self a little between two gears, I'm woundering if this is something major or minor that is wrong with my clutch, I think the clutch might be dragging but I'm not sure, please help
Thanks, good tips!
bro i have ktm 525exc. i do what u told. my cluth basket have big grove . i fix it. but it seems to drag .. and i cant put neutral when the bike is in stand. just when he in move. so what else it could be?
easy to do, i hope any other clutch change
Dummy! You covered the mic at the exact time I needed to hear your wonderful voice... sheesh.
Dude your inner hub is badly notched to
Did this improve the kickstarter feel? I am having an issue on my 95 wr250z(based on the 94 yz250) that feels like I am kicking over a four stroke instead of a 2stroke. I have read it might be worn springs as when the bike is under load and warm, the clutch functions just fine, however I am a hefty guy so my weight may be a helping factor there.
Awesome
did your trick with the brakes, i heard a big ''clack'' now i'm not to shure of what just broke there, shifting is weard DO NOT TRY THE BRAKE TRICK !! i'll bring the lower engine to a mecanics i'll give you updates.
Thalie Escher ive dine this trick many times without issue. but usually I put it in the bikes highest gear and then either install or uninstall the nut without issue
When I go to dump the clutch it sounds like its not totally disengaging could it be the cable just needs adjusting or I need a new clutch?
Terry Spence I would adjust it first, if not replace it.
Terry Spence Had exactly the same problem on my YZ250 and sent it back to the dealer....turns out the oil inside was really old. They just drained it, put new oil in and let it run for a minute and problem was fixed. Might wanna try that first.
What causes the plates to make those grooves??
The engine... When the plates engage it pushes agains the sides
very helpful
You definitely need a new basket
can you say torque wrench?
I think he is correct . It needs impact wrench🤔
i just bought a honda cr125 from 1998 but the clutch grabs realy late, only the last 20% of the clutch lever when letting it go. does anyone knows what i have to do? i have already got the clutch cable very lose, it seems that it has to get even more lose, please help.
You should have free play in the clutch lever, when you let it out, you should be able to wiggle the lever some. If you can do that and it still does not fix the problem, you can try stiffer clutch springs, or its just time for some new clutch components. Hope this helped.
myt try to adjust d screw on d middle of d pressure plate..
if it has....
clockwise to push further and counter to lessen
There is nothing wrong with the brake trick. Obviously you had something in your bike that wasn't right to begin with...
ya ya, rub it in!
You've got a bit of a problem? Is it fuckin Parkinsons? Good info though
Can't hear u after 2:15. Pointless.
yes you can if you turn him up -.-
I can here him
Speak up dude
Can’t hear you horrible audio
