Im a football (soccer) player, semi pro in the Netherlands. Im gonna try this out for a boost before the game and maybe in half time aswell. 2x 45 minutes with 15 min rest in between at a solid tempo. What would you recommend when to take and how much? I want to try without caffeine.
@@baq5261football is really good example of sport where your choice of fueling is critical. the half time mark isn't enough to get in traditional sports carbs, because te body is going to take too lont to digest. so at half time taking a GEL 160 which is 40g of carbs is ideal. 1 hour before the match starts, drink the drink mix 320. this is 120 grams of carbs for 90 minutes. the key about fueling is having the right amount of carbs for the intensity. if you find this is too much you can swap DM 320 with DM 160, and then have one gel 100 before the first half. this becomes 105g of carbs for 90 minutes. And so you tweak the volume of carbs for you specifically based on how you feel during and after the match. They key which you must maintain is to take the Gel in the half time break. The Gel is faster at being absorbed than the drink mix. and is less volume, making it easier on your stomach than to consume too much liquid.
So I'm a 2:50-3:15 marathoner. I was looking to throw the mix 320, gel 100, and gel 100 caf 100 into the mix for the race and long runs. What do you recommend on how I use the mix and gels properly?
Personally I consumed a drink 320 about 1-2 hours before my marathon race and used 6 gel 100's during, using one every 30 minutes. You don't want to go overboard with the cafeine, maybe use 2 of those ouf of 6 total
What is the best drink to sip on during mile repeats ? If I'm just running a mile in a loop and resting and going again, which drink is best to sip after each repeat ??
Hi, the best drink between hard repeats is plain water. Drink a 160 or half bottle of 320 Drink Mix one hour before your session starts. This is a sure way to allow all of the carbohydrates to be out of the stomach, and available. During your session as you sweat you can hydrate with water to thirst. After your session drink a 160 or remaining 320 Drink Mix for optimum muscle recovery.
Hi So I am doing a 25KM trail race which should take me about 2:50-3:00 hours to complete, should I be having the drink 160 or the 320? also should I take the drink about an hour before the race starts?
Hello Josiah, a suggested approach would be to consume 1x DM 320 45 minutes before your event, and then 1x DM 160 per hour to maintain good hydration. Add 1x CAF GEL 100 per hour to bring your CBO intake up to 65gm p/h. If you don't use Caffeine then use our original GEL 100. This is a suggestion and factors such as temperature, elevation and your physiology are also to be taken into account. All the best for your trail race. Let us know how your fueling strategy worked.
Hello Maurten Team.I have been using your products since 2018. However, I often read nutritionists who recommend a ratio of 6% for the best absorption of carbohydrates. You are recommended to dissolve the mix 320 in 500ml of water, but for the 80gr of carbohydrate they recommend about 1,300ml of water yielding a water-to-carbohydrate ratio of 6%. Is there an answer?
hi, I would like to ask what strategy you would recommend for a paddling marathon. It takes around 2:30 (36km). I weigh 65 kg and am 175 cm tall. Thank you very much
We are not as familiar with the requirements for paddling, however the world Champion Andy Birkett is an Maurten Athlete. We will ask him for his advice on this question.
I can just advise from what I would do… I am assuming it’s a single stage race- I would use 1.5l of Maurten (weather dependant- more if it’s hot), I would use 1 sachet of 320 with caffeine and 2 sachets of normal 320. That’s it, no need for gels or food for a race of 2:30. And obviously to have a pre race drink (500ml of 320 Maurten) in the last hour before the race
Hi Willemien, thanks for that question. Maurten Hydrogel is a biopolymer matrix that holds carbohydrates. The Hydrogel can pass through the stomach lining without needing digestion, so it is available for use in the body faster than products which must first be digested. This is also the reason why Maurten is very gentle on the stomach. Digestion and specifically compromised digestion caused by an oversupply of carbohydrates is a serious problem to athletes who are trying to get fuel in, but are limited by how long it takes to digest. So by using Hydrogel Maurten has solved two problems, firstly faster fueling, and secondly reducing stomach issues caused by oversupply of carbohydrates.
Cant wait to try your products , my first marathon is Chicago 2019 , looking to you guys to fuel it , heard allot of good thing about your gels and drinks.
The uptake of carbohydrates will noticeably take place within 15-20 min after consuming Drink Mix or Gel. The peak maximum uptake (peak blood glucose concentration) will be reached around 30-45 min, and most of the carbohydrates will be absorbed within 60-75 min after ingestion. The efficiency of Maurten Drink Mix relies on a chemical reaction that takes place in the stomach between pH-sensitive Drink Mix and stomach's acidic environment. Therefore, all factors that alter pH in the stomach might have a negative effect (eg. consumption of other products). One factor that can disrupt the hydrogel formation is the consumption of a large amount of water (pH 6 - 7) prior to Maurten. This means that too much water can theoretically dilute gastric acid.
Hi G, This information is from the Maurten FAQ. The uptake of the drink mix is slower than the gels because the gels are already in a Hydrogel form and don't require conversion from drink to Hydrogel the through the gastric conversion process. The gels are also made up with a different ratio of carbohydrates which suit all out efforts such as a hard row set.
Yes, that's a very safe time frame. Remember your body has a natural store of energy. By taking in Maurten you are allowing your body to use that energy instead of your the stored energy.
Yes, that's exactly right. The carbohydrates don't spend much time in the gut. Many people who struggle with GI issues have reported back that they are able to stomach Maurten.
That is a very hard effort so you want to focus on your run and not on fueling. The best way to do this by pre loading with 1x Drink mix 320 an hour before you start. Warm up gently for 15 minutes allowing your body to prepare for the fast pace, then 5 minutes before the start have 1x GEL 100. This is enough carbs for the entire duration. But carry one Gel 100 CAF 100 on you for the run and if you feel at any time your body or mind is having trouble then you have something with you to give you a boost.
hi, i recently bought the drink mix 160 and tried with tap water, filtered water, and aquafina bottled water. but the powder doesn't dissolve in any of the three waters, and i know at least two of them are definitely below 40mg/L calcium. the powder collects on the bottom and i am having to repeatedly shake and drink it all within minutes because it turns into a type of gel in the bottom of the bottle. i'm not sure if i'm activating it fully. any tips appreciated
Hi.. We have seen drink mix doesn't mix easily in cold water. Room temperature water is best, first full up the bottle, no more than 500ml, 480ml to be safe ;) then add the powder and shake for a minute up to 3 depending on water temp. Other than these tips we can't advise any other methods to mix drink mix. Once mixed you can refrigerate and consume within 24 hours to be safe

@@perpetual_bias thanks for the feedback. We are pleased that we could help. The total carb content is now 120gm or 480 calories. Divide the 1lt as per your needs. Effectively each 500ml serving will now be roughly 60gm carbs or 240 calories, providing a less intense and lighter drink mix. Happy training
Hello Tobias, we would say from 40 minutes before. Even though Gel 100 is rapidly available, and can be felt much sooner to aid muscles, the caffeine takes 20 minutes to start to have it's effect. After 40 minutes caffeine has it's most noticeable effect.
Hi Connor, the standard approach is to fuel the night before with a DM 320. Then in then morning take a DM 160 before your start. And then you will need to carry 6 - 8 gels along for the run, taking a gel every 6km. If you can get a DM 320 at halway mark this will help considerably. It's best that you have tried this strategy before your marathon so you know how best to tweak this approach to your requirements. Hello, I am looking to improve my marathon fuel strategy. I am weighting 55Kgs for 180cm and targeting sub 2h50 on marathon (already sub 3h using 3 Gel 100 & 1 Drink Mix 320~, e.g. ~155g of Carbohydrates). I feel safer to drink Drink Mix than to use gel. It seems that I need to eat the gel 100 in 2/3 times to digest correctly (i might also need to train my stomach). Thanks a lot.
Hello Jean good question. What is different about the two products is the speed at which Gel 100 can be utilised after being taken, and the carb ratio of glucose and fructose (ratio of 0.8:1) in Gel100 VS the carb combination of maltodextrin and fructose in the Drink Mix 320 in a ratio of 2:1. The gel is designed to be fast burning carb, while the Drink Mix 320 has a long chain carb component which is suited for sessions of exertion of 3 hours and longer. So this suggests that your race plans would be ideally served by a combination of Gel 100 and Drink Mix 320. But will also be suited to only DM320 and only Gel 100. Figuring out which combination is best for your body is what you will need to do now that you know what the difference is between the products. Key for your race day is to carb load the night before the race and to consume carbs early before your race.
@@MaurtenFuel Thanks a lot. So Drink Mix is more for long run and is less speedy fast burning. I assume it is due to maltodextrine and absence of glucose. @@jeanlouis731 Yes, you can say DM320 is for long endurance sports, at higher than normal intensity(HR). The power of DM 320 is that it is packed with carbs, so very little water can be used to obtain a high amount of carbs.Therefor DM 320 is for all distances, so long as you consume what you need, and it is optimal for threshold to below maximal effort racing and training, when you are needing faster release carbs Gel 100 is the answer. Gel 100 enters the small intestine faster and with more glucose it is suited for anaerobic effort. Average athletes and highly trained athletes both benefit from DM320 though, since there are different demands placed on the body for a average runner compared with a highly trained athlete, so it is not to say that DM320 isn't intended for average runners. When you are highly trained your energy pathways are better developed, which allows you to utilise the glucose more efficiently, while an average athletes energy pathways which are responsible for converting glucose to energy aren't as well developed, so your need for carbs will be greater, as you are not converting glucose as efficiently. This is a simplified explanation. This is also seen in the duration it takes to complete a marathon where the intensity (HR) determines the amount of carbs required. I have not experienced glycemia peak while adopting this approach. The intention is to fuel your system to allow it to utilise Maurten while you are waiting to start the race. Your natural metabolic rate and the warm up before your race should not be burning glycogen. And it also allows you to start the race with the liver at optimally, as the fructose is important to replenish the glycogen in the liver, allowing it to function at optimal state for your race.
