  • Wrapping text around a shape is simple with the ‘Put on Path’ function and if your wrapping text around a circle you can flip the text from the outside to the inside of the path by flipping the circle - but is there a way of flip the text on an asymmetrical(or non-symmetrical) shape? Yes, and in this video, I show you how. I’ll also be showing you how to overcome the problem of text disappearing when you go passed the last node in your path. This video does use the adjustment features of the text tool, so if you’re not familiar with all the functions of the text tool, you may find it helpful to watch this video to get you up to speed:

I think you can use ALT left arrow to move the starting position of text on a path (first click to place cursor at start of text).

That works really well and Alt up & down arrows allow you to adjust the offset. Thanks for that. I'll pin your comment.

There are certainly plenty of features in Inkscape to give you full control.

I watched some other tutorials about this, and even improved myself on them. But you are really explaining the nitty gritty details! Thank you for that!

Great video, however would 't it be equally easy to convert text to path and then position each letter individually?

I guess it depends on how much text you are positioning, and how complex the shape is - Go with which ever you think will be easiest/quickest.

Interesting wrapped test anchors to the start node. Is it poto reassign the start node to another location on path?

You can move the start node by breaking the path using the 'Break path at selected nodes' button in the nodes tools controls bar (options along the top when you have the nodes tool selected). If you then drag a box over the end nodes and use the 'join selected nodes' button, it should become the start node. If you wanted the start node to be somewhere where there is no node, then you could double click on the path with the nodes tool to create a new node.

What version of inkscape is that? My most recent update looks way different without the kerning and text spacing 😐

In this video I'm using Inkscape 1.1.2. The top section - the 'tool control bar' changes depending with tool you are currently using, so to have the kerning and spacing options visible you need to have selected the Text tool on the left hand side. Hopefully yours will look similar then.

So all I'm doing is creating a path to add text to. The cat is vector art made up of several paths that are grouped together, I want to create a single outline path, so I use ctrl + D to make a copy of the cat (the cat must be selected when you do this) Now I have a copy I want to combine all the paths to make a single path, so I click on Ungroup a few time to make sure there are no groups, then with them all still selected I Union them all together to make a single path. So now I have my cat illustration and an outline path. I can then offset the outline path by pressing ctrl + ) - which is ctrl + 0 on my keyboard. You can press it a few times to get the correct offset. Then I used simplify to smooth it out a bit. Hope that makes it clearer.

I got confused too because I'm using a Mac. Not sure if you are but for Mac, it's Command + 0 on keyboard. @@blahbloh-gp5tq
