Deadly sin #3 is so tempting! At a first glance, it would seem more logical to describe the circumstances and people who got you to where you are today. The 20, 60, 20 ratio is definitely a good way to make sure that you showcase what you can bring to a college.
These are the 7 deadly sins that I commit in my common app essay.

so helpful!! this makes me feel pretty good about my essay, all i’m struggling with is the hook. my essay is about my journey with makeup/eyeshadow palettes and how i went from someone who hid in the background to someone bold and self-confident because of my makeup. my first sentence is “i bought my first eyeshadow palette at the beginning of freshman year.” i kind of like it because it’s simplistic and unconventional, but it’s also not super exciting yk? but the rest of my essay seems to align with your advice though :)
