Kathleen Turner was probably the best casting for a transgender woman. And I mean that in a genuine way. Bette is a handsome woman, and they handled the topic actually really well for a 90's show, in spite of her being a joke character. I wonder if they had a transgender woman consultant? At most Chandler 's mom was a bish,, but more in a jilted ex instead of a phobic bish You also have to remember, it's a show from the 90'd a sitcom at that. Morgan Fairchild and Kathleen Turner were fantastic as Chandler's parents. Their banter is comedy gold; you totally buy that they used to be married. You also totally buy that these are the people that raised Chandler: with parents like those, how could he not grow up with a sharp wit? The extended scene is really interesting, it implies that Charles/Helena Bing's sexuality was never a secret, making it sound like a marriage of convenience (or at least a toxic codependence) rather than love.
I know it’s a stupid question, but after I finished every single episode in this show I still haven’t yet figured out the whole story of chandler’s dad. I mean was he gay before he was married or after and why does he have the intention of turning into a woman because in the episode of Monica’s wedding chandler’s mom said she saw him in a wedding dress when they got married, and I also still don’t understand how he transformed totally into a woman, did he have surgeries to turn his body into a female one?
She likely had the top surgery but not the bottom surgery. You don't even have to have a surgery to be considered transgender. She likely thought she was just gay. But felt validated wearing dresses/crossdressing.
From what I understood of the story, Chandler's dad was Bi at first and did Drag. But then acknowledged that he was gay but still kept doing Drag. He is not trans or non binary and defines himself as him, also allowing Chandler to call him dad as he is, his dad. I am sure that outside the close family group, the dad would prefer to be called by his stage name and does not mind being identified as male much by his son as he also treats him in a gender fluid way but cannot avoid calling him 'dad'. He did not transition and seems to be a top so I don't think he is a trans woman in every sense of the matter, just genderfluid, before genderfluid was a thing.
@@thewodnisty2 well it’s funny, the only reason there was interracial relationships was cause David Schwimmer specifically asked for women of different races to be love interests
What's truly hilarious is people mislabeling Charles Bing as a trans woman when the show and the screenwriters always made it clear back then that he was just a cis gay guy who was really into crossdressing, on stage and IRL. It's indeed "hilarious" to see that for some people, a crossdresser and transgender person are apparently the same thing... And I thought it was only transphobic people who equated trans women with "dudes who wear a dress, makeup, and a wig"...
