It's quite an involved story. Colonel originates with the Italian word colonna, meaning a column. In Italian military terminology, colonnella was the officer commanding a column of troops. From there it passed into French, and through a process called dissimilation (look it up) the first 'L' sound was transformed into an 'R', coronnel. Later the word was picked up by the English, initially staying with the French pronounciation, but when Italian military manuals were translated into English, the original Italian spelling became favoured, giving us colonel. Meanwhile back in France, the pronounciation changed back again to colonel (as with the Italian), but the English stuck with their peculiar mélange. Hope that didn't send you to sleep!
