Contrary to how others may think about this, the more often my motorcycle breaks down and I have to repair it, the more safe I feel driving it. To me, every time I have to actively engage with the inner mechanics of it, the the better I understand the functionality and the limits. That comforts me, knowing how the stuff works and thereby also knowing when I'm pushing my luck with the machine.
And to those who think computers are fueled by magic, remember:
Everything that works, works somehow. There is some underlying structure that makes it all come together, and it is possible to understand that structure, whatever it may be.

Some silicone wafer that computes things billions of things a second (with all the pipelining and superscalarity, do phone CPUs have out of order execution? I'd think so, crazy thing). Although i agree with the basic idea, i still think this is heavily biased by your look from the enthusiast/developer side. We have to remind ourselves that this whole "computer stuff" is just a small part of most people's lives, AND there are other communities of such "weirdos" around other areas, the "car people" are a great example. But still, all most of us just care about is whether our car takes us to the job, to the market and back. Nothing more needed. There could be a whole another huge ideology like open source among the car folks, and we would barely know about it. This is my "proof of sanity", and i recommend everyone here writing it somewhere, because it's easy to forget, but so important.

Somewhat disagree. Hobby wise, sure, not everyone needs to be into computers. But in modern society, it's an essential part of life for important stuff, not hobbies. In Norway for example, if you're not using a computer, you basically don't have access to banking, social services, tax management etc. If you're in the US, it will be a probably be a "few" years before the online services catch up, but it will certainly go in the same direction eventually. As a designer, there is an interesting play between the end user and the creation process. We need to know what features the end user wants, and how to make the system very simple to use. That's a very well put video explaining the relationship between the tiers of the ecosystem, and the definition of this system is great!
I don't really agree on the reasoning for the lack of communication between the developer and the end user though. While it's true that some engineers, especially the higher tier ones, have some difficulty communicating with others overall, as is the case with Autism, a much more significant reason for that lack of communication would be that they're almost always a part of very large corporations. (But companies of any size would be applicable for the logic I'm offering here)
In almost all cases I can think of, these engineers are legally obligated to not talk publicly about their work or details thereof. Sometimes they are not even allowed to present themselves as employees of their employer, so as to prevent cases where their statements may be publicly perceived as company statements.
I think that there's a gap between the end user and the designers because of how secretive and high risk this business is and how corporations manage this risk, not because individual designers have communicative difficulties on a personal level.
To provide some context for what I mean in 'how corporations manage this risk" -
Some companies may establish more communication channels with their users, such as good available tech support, social media channels with relevant material, etc - so they actually do try to establish a communication channel with Racecar Johnny. The degrees of success here vary wildly between the companies, for many reasons.
Other companies may be unable or unwilling to make such investments and may only retain reduced communication channels, such as PR teams that generally only communicate with official partners and these enthusiasts. That is simply not enough to communicate with Racecar Johnny, both because there's simply too many of them, and because it would require some skill on how to actually communicate 'with the masses'.
But again, those are corporate strategic decisions. The individual engineers, both autistic and not, are simply not allowed to speak to the public.

the whole point of computers, is not having to understand everything behind it. One of the fundamental principles of modern computer science is encapsulation - do you look at the source code or the api?
The 'api', for most people, is the intuition of the ui and the information that is immediately present in the ui. You may enjoy tinkering to some depth, and that's valid, but it's the opposite of an ideological necessity to include those sorts of features. the opposite also applies: it is not the duty of someone using tech to understand it.
functionality first, users second, and anything else comes after. Technology is meant to be used
