Ubuntu is the biggest distro out there. It had a transformative impact on the Linux desktop, helping to move it from "hobbyist project" to something that can, and is used by millions. From its inception in 2004 until today, Ubuntu has been working on the Linux desktop, with more or less success depending on the initiatives they took. And still, this distro, and its associated company, Canonical, are being criticized, dismissed and are generally getting a lot of hate lately. Let's see why

Ubuntu introduced an integration with Amazon when they started shipping Unity as a default desktop environment, and later, they added a reporting tool that collects sytem information and sends it back to Ubuntu to check on what their users are actually using hardware wise.
Then there's the data collection. Ubuntu asks their users if they want to DISABLE the data collection after install, meaning that it's turned on by default. This created outrage in the Linux community, arguing that Ubuntu had become spyware. Now, this is complete nonsense.
First, Ubuntu gives users an example of the data they collect: it's just hardware configs, nothing personal is sent or kept. It's less info than what the Steam user survey collects, and the goal here is to help Ubuntu tailor the experience for their users, looking at what hardware they use.
The second thing that often gets brought up is that Ubuntu tries to reinvent the wheel. Most projects that are cited here are Mir and Unity. Mir was a new display server that Ubuntu pushed when they were working on their new Unity desktop, to try and have a coherent solution for mobile devices and desktops at the same time, to work towards device convergence.
For both these projects, Ubuntu took some flak, the community accusing them of reinventing the wheel, splitting the community's efforts for development, and just wanting to do their own things.
While these are valid criticisms, you have to remember that the competing projects, at that time, were far from ready. Ubuntu should have gone with Wayland instead of inventing Mir is a phrase we often read nowadays, and still, Wayland at the time just wasn't suited for what Ubuntu wanted to do. Wayland is just a protocol, and its implementation at the time, Weston was severely lacking. Mir was supposed to allow a less modular design, with more stuff relegated to the display server instead of the client, to guarantee more performance on ARM environments, which was where Mir would run as well: on smartphones and IoT devices. Wayland didn't meet these criteria.
Unity, on the other hand, was created because GNOME 3, at the time, was such a huge departure from what users were used to. GNOME 3 did away with most, if not all the conventions for what a desktop was in the minds of users. No menu bars, no task bar, no application list, no regular menu. Instead, they pushed the activities concept, did away with the minimize button, they generally invented a whole new vision for the desktop.
Ubuntu didn't want to break all of their user's workflow, and so they worked on something that users would be more familiar with, and added their own spin on things, with the dash, allowing users to search through the entire system, a dock, and a global menu bar.
Snaps are another controversial point, that I would tend to put in the "they invented another way to do things instead of contributing to an already existing model" locker.
Snaps are a way of packaging and distributing software. They are generally criticized for being slow to load, creating new mount points in the disk utility, yes, really, and for being proprietary.
While snaps are indeed pretty slow to load, don't always respect the user's theme, and do use mount points to mount the snaps and allow the apps to run, the proprietary part is complete bogus.
Snaps themselves are completely open source, as is the way of creating them, running them. What is proprietary, however, is the snap store, the place where applications are distributed.
There is a good reason for this, though: Ubuntu doesn't want multiple store and repos popping up, to keep the snap store consistent for companies that would like to distribute their apps there. Snaps, just like flatpaks, try to solve the app distribution problem on Linux: with these formats, you can package your app once, and it will run anywhere. Companies that make software might want to distribute their apps on Linux, but if their app is displayed next to a lot of copycat applications that are left unchecked, or if their application get repackaged by other users, then they're just not going to go for it. - Наука та технологія
I think the reason why they keep the Snap store proprietary is due to a different reason. Alan Pope once did say that they had a similar situation before with launchpad website and the community wanted it to be open sourced. What happened in the end was that it was made open source after Canonical took the effort but they received no contribution from the community to the website. So, he said that they are expecting for such a thing to happen if they open source the snap store and also there is lot of effort taken to open source a project and they have the efforts directed elsewhere at the moment.

That's why the Linux community hates Canonical and they will keep hating them. They are giving a lot of reasons for that to happen, "let's make proprietary because when we opened up it didn't work"

What open sourcing snap at this point do is help to repair the trust Canonical has damaged over the years. Not opening it because no one will help them develop it is very much against the open and free spirit of Linux, which people will inherently distrust and dislike. Personally I strongly hate how the snap store is controlled by Canonical and Canonical only. It gives the look that Canonical want to control your computer by controlling how you install and run your software applications.
@@sapinho-sapeca I am not completely backing canonical on what they are doing but there is actually effort involved when open sourcing something. It's not like flicking a switch. There is serious effort involved afaik. I really do understand that an open source code will let people look into the code if something shady is happening but at the same time while they have to direct the work on different projects they have within the company. So last time they did something with launchpad, they didn't even receive a single pull request and that made them question the effort they put to open source the project. To be honest, that a very lame response from the community. Idk but I wouldn't full justify the path they took even though I find the reason they said to be genuine as they might have felt that the community is all talk and no action. Just for reference, I don't work for canonical and so take it easy on me lol.

Ubuntu is probably the most misunderstood distribution ever. I personally prefer manjaro or mint over Ubuntu. But the contribution of Ubuntu to make Linux popular is indisputable. Period.

Ubuntu sold it's users and their data to Amazon... there's nothing to misunderstand about that. Oh, but they're not doing that any more isn't an excuse. People still used Ubuntu when they sold the data, the same people telling me that they don't do that any more matters very little.
Although a bit offending, I think Stroustrup saying about programming languages also applies to Linux distros:

THIS! This also applies to a lot of other subjects. The fact of the matter is people have different opinions about stuff, which is ok. But people also get too emotional and personal about the choices they make, so they don't like being shown alternatives
@championchap Obviously there are problems. We humans are not perfect, and something, that is not perfect, cannot create something perfect, not even in groups, although groups can get closer than individuals.
Even though I don't use it anymore, if it wasn't for Ubuntu I probably would not have become a Linux fan. I started using it to develop during college and the fact that is was very user friendly (in a time when the old KDE wasn't) and mainly that it had this huge community with tutorials to solve any kind of problem really help me learn about Linux.
That was the reason I could start trying other distros and ended up keeping Mint as my main one.

Manjaro is the best one for me, Mint is pretty good though.
Been using Linux for well over a decade now, started with Mandriva or Suse as a teenager (can't remember which one exactly), but it was Ubuntu that really pulled me over the open source world. Ubuntu was the first distribution that made me ditch my Windows dualboot partition, something that hasn't changed even to this day. I still use Ubuntu and openSUSE in combination on different machines - Linux has never been easier, more beautiful and more powerful.
That being said, I also tried to give Linux Mint a try, but gave up on it a couple of years ago after their iso's and website got infected with malware. Never tried it again since then, because I value my privacy and I cherish the high security standards that mostly only big AAA distributions are capable of delivering (Ubuntu, Debian, Suse, Fedora, Manjaro, Arch, you name it). Ofc I tried a bunch of other distributions over time, but I always keep coming back to Ubuntu and Suse.
Personally, I liked the Amazon dash integration, mainly due to the fact that I am a happy customer, and I absolutely adore the old Unity 7 dash. Just like Suse, Ubuntu was way ahead of the curve, and it continues to impress me.
In fact, I miss Unity 7 so much, that I gave the new Ubuntu Unity 20.04.1 remix distribution a try, only to face a similar situation that triggered a "dejavu" (Mint) feeling inside of me: malware.
All in all, I'll be sticking to Ubuntu and openSUSE for the foreseeable future, because I'm grateful and happy to be a part of this gigantic and highly reliable open source community. Now most of my friends and family members use Linux or Mac, which was pretty much unthinkable a couple of years ago.

I've been using linux for about 12 years and work as a software developer. Basically, I like to think I'm not a noob.
I use Ubuntu. I just want a well-supported, stable distro that works and lets me get my job done. Ubuntu does all that.
Oh, and I like snaps, too.

I never understood this silly elitism of wanting to use things hardly anyone else uses just to be cool and to stand out. That's just dumb and shortsighted. The more people are using the same things I'm using, the higher the chance that any of us who run into problems find help and improve those things we're all using. That is one of the most beautiful things about Linux. Of course that doesn't mean that we should all use the same things. Variety is the spice of life (and Linux), after all. But if you want to stand out, do so by being helpful and not elitist.
The kind of problems we face in such situations are also rare. A stable system with fast updates and community support is usually enough for a common user. For advanced users their skill sets also provide them various way outs beside quick assistance from community. Also experimenting the new things is helpful for furthering research work in finding more options. Let the tree expand or we could easily listen and enjoy music from tape recorders instead of getting it directly from modern fast servers. Windows users experimenting on linux and then other os /distros actually learn more...same can be said vice versa.

That's easier said than done.. in an economic system that requires us to compete.. you can't reasonably expect people not to try to be elite while the consequences of not doing so results in being homeless, alone, and hungry.

It does not benefit us to site exceptions to the general scenario every time we attempt to formulate a strategy that gives us the greatest chance of success based on that which is the most common occurrence. I don't give a shit that some people win the lottery. I care that most people do not. I don't care that you were dealt a Blackjack. I care that there is a general Blackjack strategy which increase chances of success based on THE MOST COMMON OCCURRENCE. FWIW I don't hate Ubuntu. I use it every day and much prefer it over Windows. I was mocking people who say "I hate Ubuntu" but continue to use Ubuntu's children. I guess you can love someone and hate their parents. But you must respect the parents because without them your beloved wouldn't exist.
I use Ubuntu LTS for productivity... it is stable and reliable. I also use some Ubuntu derivatives, as Neon and Mint. I don't understand all this hate.
Ubuntu is a great thing! They are bringing a lot of UX quality to Linux for "normal people"
That doesn't mean it doesn't have bad points, Snap in recent days.
What happened to having a completey open source base system.
I understand the reasons for non free repos for say wifi, but if Canonical released their own proprietary driver people would be as mad or more than about Snap.
edit: Typed this before seeing the end of the video. The backend being proprietary is the same issue with the Play Store. There is a open client called Aurora store but ultimately Google still controls the system.
For normal people like windows user ye, I don't like telemetry rumors say Ubuntu does it either.. that's why I don't like it
Thats not Ubuntu that is Gnome and RedHat. They did so well with Unity but then thrashed it.

I've paid more to Manjaro in donations than I have to Microsoft in Win10 licences... I think Linux users look to the ecosystem as an "unlimited free trial" rather than getting as much for free as possible. I just hope elementaryos' store model catches on to more distros.

I hope für a centralized Store for all distributions, because of you by software, you by it once and it does not matter what distro you on. So the shop would not bind you to one distribution. At least it is my understanding, that e.g. Pop OS, elementary OS and mint have their own shop each.
That's a shame considering how shit manjaro is compared to pure arch. They can't even host a forum properly let alone improve on arch bu slowing it down plus adding needless complexity.

I think it's really shitty that people give canonical so much flack for creating competitive standards like unity, mir and upstart. Competition was a really important thing especially in Free Software. It allows practical implementations of multiple philosophies.
On top of that - Wayland and Systemd and most of GNOME are supported and built by Redhat but no-one gives them any shit for it.
I like to think of KDE and GNOME as a good example of what happens when competitive software is built. BOTH of them are very high quality desktop environments with radically different approaches to desktop workflow. yet they contribute so much code to each other which allows for user choice and quality and collaboration in problem solving. I don't think you should look at it so much as KDE and GNOME are competing but rather the desktop workflow design is competing. Which I feel Linux has been lacking in most other areas .
The difference of treatment between Red Hat and Canonical always astounds me
Well anytime Canonical starts a project they get shade thrown at them, and every time Red Hat pushes something everyone applauds :)

When IBM bought them it was among the largest business acquisitions ever.
Red Hat makes Coninical look like a small startup. They look at Caonical like Caninical looks at Bhodi Linux. They are also to Gnome what Canonical was to Unity. Same for Wayland (with help from intel and Google).
And yet Gnome is generally well liked as os Wayland, by the very same people who seem to want Stallman to be president.
Nobody gives Red Hat and shit for wayland and systemd? What? Every time systemd (and wayland to a degree) hits any major Linux news site the trolls come out of holes and shit in the comment section.

as for Systemd NO-ONE shit's on RedHat for it. They blame Poettering - in fact most of people's complaints about systemd is how hard Poettering has been to work with.

There is such an obvious double standard here. People just hate they fact that canonical is not sticking to the standards and is trying to do their own thing.
Conclusion: Use whatever distro you like. I'm switching from Ubuntu to Mint for a better performance.

im not even using linux for a long time but I've tried few distros, it's something recommended for newbies so installed it, ran into computer getting in bootloop multiple times.. then installed manjaro.. didn't happen once... so Ubuntu is bad, windows is big too, has it's own issue but i don't hate it that much no comments about mac os since never used it... but Ubuntu is like... windows pays it to be bad so that people can have a bad impression of linux
@@abhramandal3706 Sorry I can't agree with you on that. You can't simply resume one of the most used OS on the linux side to "bad".
Don't get me wrong I share your frustration when stuff doesn't work as is like it should (I tend to have more challenges on Linux than windows side for sure). But without Ubuntu Linux wouldn't be where it is right now and it is not an opinion, just a fact.
So it is everything but simple.

@@dee23gaming Why are you so defensive of Canonical? The point about them is that they will disregard your privacy and your trust and do what they want. That is against the ideology of the Linux community. I expect proprietary spyware to abuse and spy on me because proprietary software is slavery, but FOSS is supposed to be better than that. By including spyware in their Linux distro, Canonical showed just how little they respect the trust of their users, and puts them in the same tier of Google and Microsoft.
Im a biologist, i always hated computers and was a pretty douchy macintosh user, now im trying to switch things off and two software developer friends recomended me ubuntu to start my linux journey, and im enjoying a lot this learning process, ubuntu is really noob friendly and i really appreciate that :)

Based on my journey exploring multiple distro, ubuntu is the only ready-to-use but yet has modern touch. You can install nice GUI on (let's say) Arch distro but it requires a lot of effort for understanding how to get it working. On the other hand, Ubuntu already handles this under the hood which is pretty neat

Google: Collects a lot of data, including personal data for the purpose of showing you ads

They are after money. They want all the money in the world. They never want to stop their business from growing.
Mom and pop shops tend to set limits to how much they grow.
But for now, I stick to Kubuntu.

Edit: before you start writing why you don't like using the distro, *stop.* That's not hating it. I'm not talking about disliking the user experience, avoiding the distro or recommending another one. I'm not talking about disliking the company behavior or people who work there. Read exactly what I wrote, don't add information from your imagination.
"oh it takes the user base from other distros", just like Netflix from blockbuster, digital camera manufacturers from film manufacturers and so on. That's life. If someone offers something people would like to have and you can't offer the same or if you can't make people see what you offer, you will be in disadvantage. Don't expect others not to be clever and take advantage of the opportunities just because you want to have a easier time. You may not like this behavior, but that's not hating the distro and it happens everywhere and most of the time you as a consumer don't feel sorry for the companies which stay behind. Do you photograph exclusively with film? Do you work with a typing machine? Do you feel sorry for blockbuster or Kodak?
Let me answer my own question: I still shoot film, I love it, wish we had more options, I dislike how fujifilm destroyed some machines that turned impossible to manufacture some films. They could have sold them to Kodak, but they haven't. I avoid fujifilm, I don't recommend fujifilm, I disapprove the company's behavior. But I don't hate the film they manufacture, I don't hate the people who use it. Other people are entitled to make their own choices even if I disagree with them.

@thegeorgezila your hating doesn't stop them. As of now the most used Linux Distro is Ubuntu, they power up most of the servers around the world, containers, etc. Just take google cloud, AWS, Digital Ocean, etc for example. At the end Ubuntu loves Canonical. So, Canonical won't stop.
Ubuntu is solid. It is stable, and it's absolutely flawless with sound, video and graphics. It is just ultimately one of the best Linux Distro out there.
Flawless? In my 9 years in linux the distro that had failed the most to me in my life have been ubuntu.
Always problems with drivers and stuff and super hard to find software that is barely unpopular. I would prefer fedora or arch every time over ubuntu....God, even freebsd
@@JosueRodriguez08 My Being has tried many Linux distros, and thus far, the video drivers in the Ubuntu kernels play my video files without a thin split line, somewhere beneath the middle area of the video. However, IT is looking into Arch Linux.
I use Linux most of the day ... on most days... ubuntu hung A Lot.... 2x - 3x a day... // I switched to PopOs... based on ubuntu but Much Smoother / much more reliable. The only thing that PopOs doesn't have natively - are desktop launchers.

I used to like Mint more but I really missed the GNOME 3 look. I've tried Manjaro and Arch but those are way too unstable.
sometimes i get the feeling some people don't want mass adoption of linux, they like being on an "elitist" os. as far as i know nobody forces you to use ubuntu. so please stop hating on ubuntu and go on with your life. stay with the distro you like and let it be ;)
A year late I know, but I agree. Linux users like to constantly act like they're better than the "normies" who use a more popular OS. And complaining about Windows "spying on users", completely ignoring the fact that sites and apps can spy on users. Like well done, you guys aren't being spied on by Windows now, but you're still being spied on by Google, Facebook, Twitter, Discord, Libreoffice, your Linux OS, etc. They like to feel safe though.
@@cantin8697 The sheer amount of ignorance in this comment is astonishing. Just because apps can spy on you doesn't mean they do. Firstly, neither LibreOffice nor Linux are spying on you. They are among the largest and most mainstream open source projects out there. They're being constantly worked on by dozens of independent contributors and every new commit is also closely monitored by many people. If it were spying, we would know and it would have caused a huge scandal just like when Audacity tried to add telemetry. Google, Facebook, Twitter and Discord are absolutely spying on you. Nobody's ignoring that. A lot of us simply don't really care, as made evident by the fact that I'm posting here. I will however challenge you to try to even mention those services in front of someone who does indeed cares about privacy. They'll tell you to use Searx, Mastodon or Matrix. The more extreme ones will also tell you to use Tor with a VPN.
@@cantin8697 LibreOffice isn't spying on anyone. Also, many people choose open source Un*xes because they want ethical operating systems, which basically means freedom and excellent privacy. And I have seen serious improvements in ubuntu over last 4 years and all I can say is it's one of the best distros out there. I have tried other distros. But Ubuntu just "feels at home." If that makes sense for a distro.
The popularity is not a bad thing, it's a good thing and actually has brought many windows exclusive softwares companies to ship their software versions for Linux.

Linux, the way I see it, is that it must be a no brainer. No driver problem, no network configuration, no licence key, etc.. And privacy respected of course. A windows that just works and that respects its users privacy. I found it, and that's Manjaro. But thanks to Ubuntu , that became something I could dream of.

As far as I know, Ubuntu or Canonical got some hate from Debian developers and users, because at the beginning, they just used plenty deb packages of Debian, without adjustments for their Ubuntu Core, at cost of stability (at least this is, what I heard).
In the past I tested Ubuntu 8 something against Debian with the same desktop and it was way slower on the same notebook. I have a feeling, it would be the same today. But Ubuntu / Canonical had done a lot for the acceptance of Linux.
Mint does a nice job using the Ubuntu kernel and adding their own config /stuff. Install it, configure it a bit and you can give the PC to anyone in your family and they could use it without issues.
Well, considering they are taking Debian core and adding to it one should expect it to run slower than the one without the extras. Mark Shuttleworth was a big part of the Debian project in the early days. He never intended to separate the two.

The only thing that really pisses me off about snaps is forced auto updates. Like sure, I usually update all my applications whenever updates are available, but I still think I should have the option not to
Snap also breaks the distro philosophy as a fixed release, forcing their users to have always bleeding-edge software (even if they don't want that) through snaps.
The thing that pisses me off about snaps is the bloat. A program I was testing out for my brother last week was 2MB in generic binary form, but 185MB when snapped.
I feel the same about all the similar packaging things though. None are good for programs you want installed all the time and running regularly. Especially on older hardware.

I have been trying to find a distro that I liked to install on my laptop (also my first time actually using Linux). I tried a few different ones but kept finding something that annoyed me, trying to fix it, and needing to reinstall, at which point I would try a new distro. While doing research on distros, I found a lot of people saying bad stuff about ubuntu without providing super clear reasons. This video helped clear things up a lot.
I did try installing ubuntu on my laptop and things are working well. I am also writing this on my laptop.

I have used many different distros. I have finally came back to and really enjoy Ubuntu. I like the UI, I like how it works. Don't get me wrong I like the idea of Manjaro and Arch based distros, but Ubuntu keeps pulling me back to it. I am running Ubuntu on all my machines now and love it.
I recently moved to Ubuntu from MX Linux because I couldn't figure out how to get 3 monitors working under MX. They worked immediately under Ubuntu. The thing that surprises me the most is that I don't hate Gnome anymore. In Ubuntu 20.04, Gnome is snappy and fast and I have become addicted to the super-key. So, I guess old dogs like me can still learn a few new tricks. Thanks for the great video!

Stable is debian, but for media production check out ubuntu studio or manjaro
I started out on Kubuntu, for many years it has been my rescue disk while using windows, I just personally prefer the simplicity of Arch, and the rolling release model which doesn't require reinstalling every few years. Also having access to the newest stable kernels, and the AUR for apps not in repositories yet is a huge upgrade.
Thank you for this extremely sensible video and very good talking points. The thing about bring a hipster is very critical. And I totally agree with what you say. Being easy to use is not an indication of its professionality and people like to differentiate themselves by saying they "don't like" ubuntu hence making them "separate" from "regular" people.

I remember almost 8 9 years ago, I read a blog post about Linux OS, somebody wrote in that post that you can run an entire linux os from usb stick without installing it and I was like, omg, how on earth is that possible? and then I decided to try linux and ubuntu 10.4 was the very first distro that I tried as live distro from my usb :) and I was so excited, I couldnt believe that an entire os was running from usb and Im still excited about that experiene :)

I actually liked Unity, and I kind of miss it. It's a shame Ubuntu gave up on it. But I get it too. Anyway, Cinnamon is my favorite DE right now. It hits the right features in a DE I want and use.
Been distrohopping last year, up to the point where I use gentoo, but after trying them all, I chose to use kubuntu. It was a fun experience hopping, but I just want something that works out of the box these days. I would use opensuse but I'm having issues with it.
I uninstalled windows just to try linux. And the first os everyone recommended was ubuntu. I use it everyday and I swer, it's a productivity machine.

It's been almost a year, I switched from windows to Ubuntu 18.04. I didn't faced a problem which wasn't solvable. Now I am addicted to it.
The problem with Ubuntu is that it doesn't hear its community and persists doing things that fail in the end : Upstart, Mir, Unity and Snap will follow.
And they're quite right about that, maybe that's why they managed to become one of the most popular distro

If it weren't for Ubuntu, I wouldn't even know there was such thing as Linux. Ubuntu really made Linux accessible for the masses who didn't care about the inner workings of the system, desktop environments, or telemetry. All they cared about was an operating system that runs well and do everything they need to do. Of course, Ubuntu also ended up teaching the users some basic Linux commands and terms.
Right? Its like a gateway into Linux, it's so important!
I've been using Ubuntu since 12.04 off and on and only really started using it daily as of 16.04. Unity was a great desktop environment. The whole idea of it splitting the community effort was completely asinine because the community wasn't responsible for development of Unity. The Gnome community was responsible for Gnome and nothing else. It was like saying having KDE and Gnome desktops splits the community efforts. The Ubuntu phone-home thing never bothered me because it was easily turned off and most users couldn't even grasp the concept of opt out functionality. I don't really use snaps but I like the idea that they're their own containerized application that is seperate and don't contain pre-requisites. They're also more secure because of their containerization. Yeah, they're a little heavier than non-snap apps and could probably be better optimized, but the idea behind them is stellar from a security and corporate perspective.
Also snaps load slower. Some snaps force you to install the snap version even when you install it from apt (without telling you mind you). Ubuntu just feels sneaky to me. I switched to mint for this reason ...

Yes, if you install Chromium from apr, it will replace it with Snap version.
Yeah snap is what killed it for me, version 18.04 is the last version of Ubuntu I'll run. Switching to mint for my next install
While using Ubuntu for few days now, I've noticed that snap package are larger in size than deb files. And also the Ubuntu Software Center doesn't work most times, I have to end the snap store process and then have to restart the software center again. Do you anyone having same problem?

I've been using Linux since 20 years. Ubuntu is really great, easy to install, everything easily configured, I don't need to spend hours parametrizing my system before using it, something I had to do some time ago. Ubuntu did a lot for popularisation of Linux.
I have used Linux and Ubuntu right from the beginning, I guess I have expected too much from them, personally I was disappointed when they abandoned unity, and by their helping Microsoft add Linux apps to windows...embrace extend etc. But canonical have done a great deal, and I am thankful for all the work they have done which has helped the open source and commercial world enormously. Thanks to the Ubuntu team.
Hey, I'd say Linux apps on Windows are fair game. Do you know just how many resources and time have gone into projects like Wine and Mono? We're not exactly guilt-free when it comes to this whole EEE shebang.
The implications of the Snap Store being proprietary were underappreciated in this video. Snap, unlike Flatpak, can seriously mess up your system - it can install anything from apps to themes to kernel modules. Now consider that being proprietary, there is no guarantee that the Snap Store is not modifying the apps it builds; or the system services and kernel modules it ships. The source code is submitted to a black box, that can literally do anything to it, including modifying the source code of free software applications to do whatever they want. Even if we consider Canonical innocent, in the sense that they won't do that, if they're ever hacked, there won't be a way for anyone except Canonical to know.
I started using Ubuntu to build a mythbuntu server, about 12 - 13 years ago. it was an awesome distribution as it connected all the dots to get MythTV working. I used lircd for IR and a Haupauge Video Capture Card. Before Ubuntu, I used Fedora and before that, Red Hat. Before Ubuntu, I took hours and hours setting up the MythTV server. Compiling kernels with modules was a thing back then (kernel 2.6). Everything was done in Mythbuntu, all I had to do was install, config and done.
I respect Ubuntu for that reason. I run mainly Manjaro with a Ubuntu version in the mix. It comes down to an Arch class distro or a Deb class distro. I like both and run both.
i just hope the appstore for everyone by elementary will support snaps at some point

I think the hate is a bit unfair, but Canonical really needs to think about the product they're offering. Ubuntu, even on high end machines, is noticeable slowly than Pop!_OS, witch is virtually the "same system". Not saying Ubuntu is slow, but common, there's a smaller company proofing that it could be way faster.
@Any Creature Morph I really dislike KDE: bad fonts rendering, no visual cohesion, and the KDE apps are bad and ugly in general. The only thing I like in KDE is the fluid and nice animations, and performance, KDE nowadays is faster and snappier than the almighty XFCE. Atm I'm still on Elementary OS, it serves me well, but if I had to change today, I'll pick Manjaro Gnome or Pop!_OS 20.04
I miss the Unity Desktop Environment. I've been installing my first distro with Ubuntu 15.10. i found thé DE ahead of it's time comparéd to other DE or even Windows and MacOS UI.
Installed ubuntu 20.04 LTS with Gnome desktop after sitting for long while on 18.04 LTS. well, my first impression is that it is much, much better gnome now than before. Read somewhere that there have been a lot of improvements to Gnome in eliminating latency and frame drops etc in gnome desktop. So far, I like it more than i liked it any time before i have worked with ubuntu. It feels a lot snapier now.

try installing it on a sabretooth 990fx - gtx 660 and i will freeze on you after 5-10 minutes and i have been using win 7 for 3-4 hours previously no problems errors.
Thank you for that video. When I come to Linux a short while ago I went for manjaro (love it) specifically to avoid Ubuntu because of the videos I first encountered when trying to research Linux. It seemed from the videos I'd seen that Ubuntu was becoming similar to a Windows style company and I was leaving windows (and Android) because of being fed up with their habitual line crossing. I feel like I could look at their fork now with less suspension.
the ongoing discussion about snaps.. you still can use flatpak aside with it that is no problem at all. it is a addition you can use and I don't see any downsides here.

For the first time since I started lessening and became a subscriber I could not disagree with you more than about Snaps. What if, as might just happen Microsoft buys Canonical, with IBM owning Red Hat, it would make sense. However, then MS would control the Snap store and then no one in the Linux community would trust or use Snaps anymore.

It is not true. Not every Linux user is hardcore opensource/privacy freak. I switched to Linux not because I "don't trust MS" but because win10 is total garbage. I don't care who owns Snap as long as it have everything in one place and easy to use. And I know for sure I'm not unique in this.

Ubuntu was my first Linux district I used. I was 12 at the time and even then it was very easy to dualboot. I would say it was waaaay easier to dualboot than Windows 7/10 was. The huge thing that I loved was that I didn’t need to install a single driver. I had spent daaaayz trying to find the right drivers for windows 7. Eventually I switched to peppermint which was based on Ubuntu, and I was even more amazed that I could have more than one tab open in chromium ( I was on like a pentium 2 w 512mb ram). Linux has then turned into a daily driver to me, all because Ubuntu was that easy to install. I am now an avid arch user and I’ve never rlly thought about how Ubuntu started my use of Linux.
I am currently a novice linux user, and I love my Kubuntu distro. I have Kubuntu 20.04 LTS on all my home desktops and laptops and runs very very well. So impressed with Canonical Ubuntu products.

Thank you, Nick. Ubuntu 8.04 was my favourite. This was when the Community repos contained soft porn wallpapers by the community and Ubuntu was just a cohesive theming of a clean GNOME 2 desktop. After this I tried but never wound up using any of the bits they began to generate.
I used Ubuntu for a long time, it was just the best option for me at the time. Polished, stable and really focused on the desktop!
I also started using Linux with Hardy Heron in mid-2008. Since then I went back and forth between distros (Mandriva, Arch - when I had time to lose with my config, Ubuntu stripped of Gnome and equipped with wmii - because I had a shitty netbook, and more recently, MX - which is my current daily driver). The thing I loved about Ubuntu in the Hardy Heron period (and following - until 10.10 or 11.04 IIRCC) was the kind of "WinXP/Vista light" feel it had.
About snaps:
Canonical actually released once a (prototype) snap store which you can self host a few years ago. It was pretty bare bones (aka, you can only download and update it snaps, but that's it) but open source. Because of some reason, nobody really seemed to care. Which (obviously) meant the server rotted and is at this point incompatible with the newer versions of snap.
Also, part of Snapcrafts backend is (according to Canonical) actually proprietary and not owned by Canonical meaning that they can't release that source code, even if they wanted to.

I've only really used Fedora or Kali and have no preference either way but the final and defining decision is that I simply use what installed first time.
I paid a good amount for a MacBook and Kali was the only distro to install with zero hiccups. I might have had others install with some work but that's not what I was after.
Then I got a ThinkPad and Fedora installed and ran perfect and I just kept it.
Nothing to do with anything, it just did it and had no complaints so I used it. I'm no hacker, I don't break into Active Directory but my MacBook boots up and lets me open my emails and install anything I want. It just works.
I appreciate Canonical for making such a great os.

My bigest problem with Ubuntu is that Cannonical try to force us to use snaps (like the chromium package that install chromium from the snap store), and the fact that snaps auto update, i like to have things updated, but i want to decide the exactly momento to do that. I'm using Manjaro on my main PC and KDE Neon (based on Ubuntu) on my laptop
How can I check that some "open source software" in snaps store was actually compiled from open source? How can I check if the developers didn't add telemetry to their app before publishing?
Like microsoft does with their VS Code, which is open source, but before they package it they shove telemetry into it. That is the reason why VS Codium exists. Plus I could always compile from source code.
Flatpacks are pre-built, so there is really no way to know wtf is going on in there. And there is also an issue of flatpacks installing stuff without user permission, idk if it was resolved since I don't use ubuntu or ubuntu-based garbage.
The only thing I can hate about them is their use of haloween purple and orange.

I use Ubuntu and it's great. The user experience is very hassle-free compared to a lot of other distros. The community and software support is also great, since it's the most popular distribution

for me i have test multiple distros but the one that worked for me is kde neon, i just love it.
I think it’s fantastic for the regular user. And it’s a great intro to the Linux world and has great programs for Python programming.
Just because Ubuntu doesn't want copycats or forked versions mucking up their repositories is not a reason not to open-source. That's like saying "ubuntu wants everything to be their way because they want things their way because wanting things their way is what companies want and companies having what they want is integral to having what they want when they want it to be their way and that's important for them." Also, there is no technical advantage for Adobe products to use snap instead of flatpaks. Most other distributions have accepted flatpaks as the default, and there is really no technical reason for Adobe or other company not to do the same. The only reason to choose snaps is to have access to the Ubuntu repositories and that is what the Ubuntu is slowly closing off to other distributions. Furthermore, hating a company because their big is not a reson either, if all complaints were just a matter of 'people hate us 'cos we're the best' then next you're going to say 'Well, if you think ubuntu's bad, look at what microsoft is doing!' btw: I like Ubuntu, I'm not a hater. I just don't like snaps.
i like snaps. They do what they are supposed to do, it works fast and all things i've been using are stable. perhaps one day thier backend will be open source.
@Alex Hucker I'm just an end-user not head of marketing. However, I don't see how Flatpak is less commercial. Steam and Spotify are pretty large for-profit companies and they provide flatpaks of their software for all the major Linux distros and they seem to make enough $ to keep doing it and keep their software up to date. So I would say someone knows how to commercialize Flatpaks because they are already doing it. :)
Ubuntu is not a bad distribution. It's just that for now I find Manjaro easier to use daily. It's really nice to have all the software I need easily available without having to had ppas or use snaps. Snaps are unnecessarly heavy, Flatpaks are better

I do like snaps sometimes. I've run into the problem that the official terminal commands given by a developer on their own website wouldn't pull the correct dependencies. Thus you'd launch the application and it would hang or something else.
i'm new to Linux currently trying out Pop_Os! and Manjaro. Making an effort to escape Windows. It seems to me that rivalry between LInux foundations is healthy competition and probably makes for better distros in the end.
I'm all for universal apps. I think they are a fantastic idea. I hope more developers embrace them so they don't have to tweak their app for every single individual distribution. I can see your point of view for snaps. It makes sense that the store isn't open source. It would be great to see mainstream applications getting ported to snap. Obviously those developers would want their app secure and pay walled, that is understandable and to be expected. It is good to hear an argument for snaps and it makes sense to me.

I agree with most points, but I want to counter argument the snap debate. I get why we need snaps and the basic ideas. My opinion is that they are not transparent enough how it works and give options to the user. For example:
- The first thing I did when I installed Ubuntu 2 years ago was turning off auto updates and let it notify me. Later I installed the VS code snap, which worked quite well but it auto updated out of nowhere and without a warning. I couldn't find a way to turn auto updates off.
- I want to know how much shared libraries snaps use. I know flatpaks use runtimes. With flatpak I have this nice page: docs.flatpak.org/en/latest/basic-concepts.html
With snaps, I don't know how they work. Especially for servers I want to have control of the libraries are up to date, not that I have a version of a webserver with an exploit.
I am now happy running Pop!_Os with the KDE desktop environment.

Unity didn't fail. It worked well, and advanced the desktop experience on Linux by light years, taking most users away from the Windows 95 experience.
Ubuntu was the first Linux distro that I heard and tried, its very user friendly, looks modern and you can still do more advanced stuff. big surprise for those others that find Ubuntu too "mainstream".
I tried some distro's before too, also Elementary OS, but that one didnt liked my hardware. Thanks to Ubuntu I have a fantastic laptop that has no problems at all.
elementaryOS is based as of today (21/08/2020) on Ubuntu 18.04. Wait until 20.04 version is released then you can try again elementaryOS...
That's why I hate fixed releases... When I bought a new computer, every piece of it was just launched by that time, so I couldn't use Ubuntu because the drivers weren't available in their old kernel, I needed to go straight to Arch... Imagine the pain...
I think Ubuntu drives LinuxOS'es forward in the mainstream sphere.
I like how it looks, but I usually don't like using it. I often go back to mint, which I think has better usability and it's even starting to look better (not as good as ubuntu or eOS, but with more usability in my opinion).
I personally prefer to use flatpak over snaps, but I don't mind any of what Ubuntu is doing 👍
I am however a little curious: does anybody know what is going to happen to the ICE-application, that peppermint made? It uses some chromium packages, and those packages have been excluded from mint's side of things and peppermint is based on mint so...?
Ubuntu was my first foray into the open source world. I also experimented with FreeBSD for awhile too. The big turn off for me with Ubuntu was the Gnome2 to Unity and then Gnome 3. It felt like I had to reinvent my workflow every few versions.

I remember installing Ubuntu on my cousins laptop and he actually found a use for the amazon app
I hate it because its hard to install up to date drivers, went to manjaro just to use arch based software and drivers, have less issues as a result, also the kernel is more secure in manjaro because it is up to date, currently on version 5.8.# (don't remember patch/build)
