I do love how Douglas Adams expresses his personal contempt for authority by making the villains so campy - the pirate captain especially, would basically be a clown if it weren't for his robot murder parrot. About the handshake, I think it is showing the Doctor almost recognizing Romana as an equal then checking himself.
At the handshake, I thought Queen Xanxia might be revealed to be hiding in Romana's image. Especially as Romana was acting a little out of character being so praising of the Doctor. That is an odd little moment.
The Pirate Planet is one of my favourite Doctor Who stories. I liked the story and Bruce Purchase was brilliant as The Captain. Mary Tamm was absolutely beautiful in the story. K9 got to have a heroic moment which he battled The Captain's robot parrot Polyphase Avatron. I liked the Captain's guard's leather medieval knight costumes and helmets. One of the best stories of the Tom Baker era.
The Pirate Planet was a favourite of mine at the time. I liked it so much that I recorded the audio by holding my the tape recorder which I had just got for my 8th birthday, up to the TVs speaker for the whole episode! I must have listened many times to the tape because after all these years, I can still recall..."Planet Terra, Star system Sol, galactic co-ordinates; 580-44-684-88-4, surround jump commences in 5 seconds, 4-3-2-1....NOW DOCTOR, DEMATERIALISE NOW!" The dialogue between The Captain and 'First Mate' Mr Fibuli kept me (and my Mother) laughing for ages. It is a bit daft by today's standard, but back then it was great stuff for us 70's kids.
Thank you for actually giving this story a fair shot and an actual review unlike the rest of the negative wasteland that is the DW fandom's reaction towards this story... Which I God damn adore as an imaginative Saturday morning adventure that appeals to my offbeat sense of humor.

Tom baker got fed up at Mary tamm that’s why he didn’t shake her hand
this season really got weighed down somewhat by Tom Baker's distracting cold sore which slowly heals as the season goes on. :)
the Doctors greatest enemy lol
Wasn’t that a dog bite? I definitely remember reading that.
At the time of shooting, Tom Baker was bitten by a dog, hence the visible scarring on his face.
Tom baker and Mary tamm had an argument while filming
Great review
I love the pirate planet because I love all of series 16 of classic Dr who series 16 is way better than series 15 of classic Dr who
Agreed. With the exception of Horror of Fang Rock (which seems like it should be the end of Season 14), 15 was mostly full of duds.
