Is it just me or does this seem to happen a lot with DW? That a perfectly serviceable episode gets sandwiched between two great ones and therefore looks worse than it actually is?
My personal theory as to how the rest of the crew got "freed" from the siren (since Amy had to prove she was married to Rory to get the siren to leave him alone), is because Rory was *dying* , Toby was *dying* . The rest of the crew (from what we've seen) simply got cuts/small burns/leech bites. So once they healed, she simply let them go.
I dunno it's what I've always thought.
Plus, she understands english so I expect it was simple to explain after that
Also Avory was their captain, so he might've been able to take responsibility for them as his crew, like Amy did with Rory as his wife/next of kin.
At sea a captain's word is law so he could have married any two men there and then
I think at the time, some people were already tired of the pirate craze, so that could have had an impact on episode's mediocre reception.
Pirate Burnout lol
Maybe thats why i enjoyed it more than most people, I watched it much later when pirate shows were already pretty much dead
It came out the same year as the 4th PotC movie and that was not a good film so it's understandable.
This was my first episode of doctor who! I'll always have a soft spot for it, regardless of objective quality. I still think it's a great introduction to the doctor who universe.
The Blessing of the Soft Spot. 😉
Damn good that you stuck around, I personally wouldn’t if this was my first episode
That's your opinion
@@the-scamp idk if you're talking to me or empires but either way we were Very clear about it being personal experience so no shit they're opinions?
@@CheeseypiPlays how come this was your first episode? Im interested bc my first episode was The Runaway Bride and it was only by chance as I was 4 at the time of the episode premier and my dad sat me down to watch it with him
So Amy wanted to become a professional pirate before engaging in a sword fight, can you *really* blame her? 😆
I can't get over a barrel of water on the deck of a ship in the middle of a storm somehow being calm enough to reflect anything.
Given this came out at the same time as On Stranger Tides, people probably got sick to death of Pirates in media.
And still two years before Black Flag
I really like that Thursdays at 11 AM I’m able to sit down and watch Harbos videos.
So this episode is pretty decent imo. Obviously the best parts are the trio of the Ponds and Eleven. Their performances here are awesome as usual but everything else is just subpar.
Not harmful, but just forgettable. None of the pirates really stuck with me, and the Moffatism of the siren is still a Moffatism, though I do like that it parallels the twist in the later episode of Let’s Kill Hitler and The Wedding of River Song with the Human Mech that copies other’s identities and transports people into the other side. It’s good foreshadowing tbh even though it recycled ideas.
You know what this video about the pirate episode made me realize? There has been little episodes in New Who about zombies. Empty Child is sort of zombie but not quite, and there is that one of the hospital where the I-forgot-her-name possesses the Doctor. And I think that's about it. I don't know, I feel there is a lot you can do with zombies on a sci fi almost fantasy setting of DW.
You forgot the Vashta Nerada zombies. I'm sure there's a lot more as well, they're just not your typical zombies.
@@joshuanelsonanimations That's true, Vashta Nerada are kind of zombie like. But there hasn't been a more typical zombie.
The Vashta Nerada were dope tho.
All I remember from this episode is that my dad walked in at the very end when Amy was hugging shirtless Rory and crying and he was like "Isn't this a family show?"
I really love the pirate setting, so I’ve revisited it several times because of that. The same with A Town Called Mercy. I quite like that it’s light on the overall series arc, because it makes it very easy to revisit without needing to remember the context surrounding it.
I had no idea about Avory. So cool!
Edit: just heard the details. Less cool 😬
I just meant it's neat he was a real pirate and that doctor who has referenced him before
Edit 2: I think after requesting to look after him, the Siren just had her sign the contract to transfer care to her. I don't think showing the ring had much to do with it so I wasn't very confused as to why the others were freed, especially since their injuries weren't nearly as bad as Rorys at that time. If she knows English it's probably explainable
Showing the ring was just a way to explain to the Siren that they were married; since there was no way to verbally communicate with her. Although you might question if a wedding ring would mean anything to an Alien AI, it's not unreasonable to think that the exchange of jewelry is a common way of signaling commitment or attachment, even in alien cultures. Especially if the two rings are similar in design.
But yeah, the "bond" between Amy and Rory has nothing to do with it; the Siren just wanted Amy to "sign" a consent form, that she would be responsible for Rory's well-being from that point onward. Presumably Captain Avory accepted a identical consent agreement with the Siren to release his crew.
You really got to cover series 6 at the right time, hope your relationship with luna goes well!
The list of series 6 reminded me that god complex exists and that you will cover it soon. So hyped, love that episode
Series 6 has a major weakness, it's all plot and almost no character especially with the Melody/River revelation seeming to have literally no effect on Amy and Rory after Let's Kill Hitler even though that should have shaken their entire world but they just move on like nothing happened with pretty much no reflection on what that actually means for their characters.
Which is kinda why the order placement for this episode just still baffles me.
Like why the hell is this an early episode compared to freaking Night Terrors omg
Did you watch from 19:06 onward of this video?
Thats what i was just thinking. They didnt get to raise their baby and they just… move on?? No grief? No complaints?
Just imagine Matt Smith with his own a jar of dirt, what a riot that would be. 😆
I like all of season six, but I find episodes like this one to be gems. I never understood why it was hated, but I try not to listen to them.
This is pretty much the only new who episode I haven't rewatched 10 times so seeing it again made it feel really new
Guys I think Harbo MIGHT be in a relationship
This is another one of those episodes where you don't have to use your brain. you can just sit back and enjoy. You are promised a fun swashbuckling pirate adventure and it delivers just that. it's the right kind of filler episode.
This was the first Doctor Who episode I ever saw, when I was very young. Now I finally understand the haunting image of a floating ghost girl that’s been rattling around my brain since I was five!
i like to imagine the captain discharged his crew by handing in a large folder of tax documents
Just now getting to watch to video after a busy week. Thanks for the great content! Can’t wait to rewatch this episode after watching this
I'm gonna level with you, I'm basically making half the money I was making even a month ago and it's trending downwards. It would really mean a lot if you went and donated to my Patreon page so that I can keep doing this full time!

Did this episode come out before or after Hugh Bonneville played a pirate captain in Galavant?
I’m glad u talked about this episode because I too think it’s underrated. It’s no master piece but it’s still good, overall for me, 6/10
Why'd ye spill yer beans, Rory? Why'd ye spill yer beans?
This is one of my all time favorite New Who episodes. I don't know why but I have a lot of nostalgia for this episode and I loved it as a kid.
You have convinced me to give this episode another go. I might even though it won’t fit properly move it to be episode 9 if I ever do go through series 6 again.
@Harbo Wholmes FYI the samurai never clashed with Mongol Hordes.
14:36 Didn’t they do that for Series 11’s ‘It Takes You Away’?
love your videos, always
Bold of you to assume I ever forgot this existed
Ironic how this Pirates episode of Doctor Who involves sirens, and sirens had *also* been introduced in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, one of them even becoming a key character. 🧜♀✨
Why does being sandwiched between episodes matter? I like the mid-season of series 6, to me it's got a couple good episodes next to one another, if there's a good one between two other good ones I think "Oh great! Another good one!" I can't pinpoint what's wrong with this episode because it's not egregiously bad, but it is exceedingly boring, and that's a feeling that doesn't need much time or context to explain.
Wasn't the "mirrors can be portals" thing used in a Dalek plot some time? Not sure if was a book or not.
Didn’t forget it at all, loved this episode
The siren took the tardis did it have some type of tardis cold
I had the Resurrection Casket on cd as a kid and to this day it's one of my favourite doctor who stories. This episode was good but I couldn't help but compare it unfavourably to the audio story
Pirates still exist, and Parlay is not a thing nowadays.
Geez I’ve got to start watching Torchwood
I love your DW/TW videos and always watch them. I hope you are able to recoup your losses. 💖🦅🦅
another fab review !!!
Great review, this episode's gone up in my estimation.
Now Harbo, if women had been sailors back in the day they would have invented Sirens of their own that looked like Fabio.
Season 6 is one of the best...
Together with Season 10...
Troughton and Pertwee both have some very good Seasons ngl.
@Ben 10 Omniverse fanclub does that ratio suck?
@Ben 10 Omniverse fanclub Ahhh are you ok, Classic Fan?
I feel like classic episodes are a bit slow...xD
@Ben 10 Omniverse fanclub i completely respect your opinion but i dont think the show has gotten less creative, it's continued to produce some of the most creative sci-fi across it's almost 40 years on air.
as for the romance, alot of people don't like the romance eliments and i understand and occasionally agree- but i think it can be used well if occasionally done with a mature enough companion and if it isnt all the focus.
@@valentinbomlander7262 season 10 is underrated. I'd say only season 4 is better than it in nuwho.
It wasn't that long ago and I'm not a goldfish.
Didn't forget it. It was a pretty good episode.
I mean, the monster of the week being evil is a far more used trope.
Lily Cole was perfect in this episode, she reflected both sexiness and unearthliness of the siren. I'm disappointed she wasn't even name dropped in the video, but Bill Nighy wasn't mentioned by name in "Vincent and Doctor", so I guess Harbo is very selective about which guest star actors deserve to be mentioned in review.
If Mr Avery is the king of the pirates then Luffy has a lot to look up to
Ive always loved this episode
I enjoyed this one. Didn't like the siren too much, but I enjoyed all the funny moments as well as most of the pirates
But the pirates never actually made people walk the plank 😬
You do know that “newcomer Steve Thompson” is really a pseudonym of Steven Moffat don’t you…? Check out his IMDb
Why all the bloody ads?
5 ads in a 20 minute video is industry standard for UA-cam.
@@HarboWholmes Thanks for the reply. It just seems a bit excessive, in my opinion.
@@HarboWholmes I've never seen that many ads, normally it's every 10 minutes of run time (so a 10 minute video would have one at the start and one at the end). I've also seen sponsored videos tend to have way less, or no ads, in exchange for the small minute or so in the video dedicated to the sponsor. I just think every 4 minutes is a bit excessive.
Know you need to get money off this but it makes it super hard to watch as I normally watch your videos with breakfast on my phone but have switched to my PC with ad block as I keep getting 15 second ads that can't be skipped which really ruins the flow of the video.
He’s got to get paid man
Forgotten pirate MASTERPIECE is a bit of a stretch there mate I won’t lie. Wasn’t a bad episode but wasn’t without its many many faults.
It was shite
❤️
Series 6 is honestly perfect
That's your opinion
@@the-scamp well yeah??
I feel it's really underrated
As a gay I am basically required to love pirates because pirates are not only awesome but also they are hella fruity so this episode for me is just fun and cool and just a rollicking great time. Just a fun pirate adventure. What's not to love about pirates?
Also the sirens meh put them away ladies 🤣🌈🌈🌈
Peace and happiness from Dublin Eire 🇮🇪
@@CashelOConnolly A siren is essentially a mermaid and mermaids are also fruity as hell so yeah I'll bag me a siren
10:22 you mean "because youtube would age restrict me"
i always thought it was a good episode and i rewatch it occasionally
I thought it was kinda 'meh'. The Doctor and Amy were a bit cliche and Rory was too 'tin dog'.
PS: If anyone should know how to use a sword, it's Rory the Roman, amirite? That was a real wasted opportunity.
Until the Chibnall era, this was my least favourite episode of the whole show. Nice to see a different perspective on things. Still think its awful, but nice work.
There's worse episodes like fear her Love and monsters New earth is bad the idiots lantern is God awful and 42 is a downright borefest
@@thedoctor1263 I agree they are all on the poor side, but for me, since I like the characters in those series so much more, I always preferred them, even if i wouldn't rewatch them now.
Well that siren wouldn’t get me I’m gay.
I’d simply say “are those supposed to impress me? Put them away madam”🤣🌈🏳️🌈
Doctor Who and the Pirates is the definitive pirate story, how can a story with such silly songs also turn around and make you cry your damn eyes out?! I have comparatively few opinions on Curse of the Black Spot. It isn't bad, I think people hate on it too much. But it is forgettable. They shouldn't have switched its position in the running order, but Night Terrors would have sucked in that spot too, and I STILL think Black Spot would be forgettable in S6B.
"This scene gains a whole new dimension if you yourself are in a relationship"
Whovians: ..........
Jk, for real I'd say this episode is a lil overcriticised just cus of how great other stories are in series 6. I surprisingly enjoyed it on a rewatch with the music really adding to the pirate aesthetic. Didn't know about the placement swap so might try that on the next rewatch.
3:16 That's discrimination! So unfair.
If 13’s pirate episode is better than curse of the black spot, as far as I’m concerned her era gets a passing grade. I’ll give it a low C but that’s still a pass
I think Legend of the Sea Devils will do a better pirate story.
No because is set in the Chibnall era.
@@mayotango1317 and this was in the moffats era. Trash is better than moffats era
What's your opinion of it now?
@@peytonmac1131 Nah.
this episode is the worst mat smith episdoe there is, the plot is nonsense, the timeline is all over the place and my god is it cringy
It's a rubbish episode.
Give it a chance
