I’m so glad you’re a person, and a UA-camr, and that you are the way you are. So fun to watch and informative on things I didnt even know I wanted to know about! Keep killing it!
For PS1, there is another unique jewel case for Arc the Lad Collection which had 6 discs in a dual case. I thought that as pretty neat back in the days.
There is another PS2 case that you missed to mention. The launch games (around 30) have a different case without a memory card holder and in the center of the case says 'push here' instead of just 'push' and is shaped like a ying yang shape instead of a triangle. Some examples to look are Tekken Tag Tournament, SSX, MIDNIGHT CLUB, etc
We had completely different cases for the PS1 in the UK. We did not have the bog standard CD jewel cases, we had specially made jewel cases which were much thicker.
Yeah, i think it's the same here in the netherlands. I was thinking of picking up some classics on the used market but these thicker unique cases make them a pain in the ass to replace cause you can't simply slap a cd case onto them.
The cases are bigger because they manuals were thicker. They needed more languages because PAL games were released in Europe. We had them in Australia too
In Europe we have blue cases, as standard, but we also have a couple of colored ones, games in the first year for the most part was black cases, same to US ones. Orange cases for eyeToy, red for Buzz, some games like Singstar Legends and GT4 had white cases, MGS 2 had a seethrough case.
As a PS1 game collector who grew up in the UK and has now been living in Japan for over a decade, I find it interesting how US PS1 cases are so different to the cases for Europe and Japan. I don't think there were any longboxes in Europe and Japan and only US cases have that ridged look down the side. Even for single disc games, the square cases in Europe are all much chunkier- about the width of 2 CD jewel cases (with double layered cases for 3 and 4 disc games). Japan has a mixture of chunky square cases and thin jewel cases. Also imo the silver band on the cases for platinum games in Europe is much better looking than the vivid green of US greatest hits.
The long cases were seen by the 3DO, Sega CD and Sega Saturn. The main culprit wou!d be the PC market. They were the 1st to have many sizes of containers including long box.
I really prefer our PAL PS1 cases, I feel they differentiated PS from PC games at the time and contributed to its personality. One thing I wish is that our PS2 games had art on the spine like NTSC, though.
@@mediaconsumer9114 I didn't like that White spine on the European ps2 pal version. It's not very unique and uninteresting. That's how I feel about the Switch Red box currently. When I look at the Wall of Red, I couldn't tell the differences between any of them. The words are too small and I definitely have to get a closer look into it. I set mine as aphabetical.
I got my PSP very late, in 2013. In the stores, they had these re-releases with an orange box in the front, the spine and orange box around the back art. It was called "PSP Essentials" so most of my PSP games are like that 😀
I've always said that in my entire collection of games for more than a dozen consoles, the cases for PS3 are my favorite. When on the shelf with all their spines exposed. They look so colorful and interesting! My biggest gripe was Sony not doing the PS5 cases in black (like 4k blue rays). Would've made so much more sense as a natural evolution from the ps4's blue ray colored cases.
I don't know why, but I like this over explained conversation about box art, it's evolution and revolution of its history, the great classical Era of ps1 ps2 then, the interesting times of early ps3, and the standardization of the modern Era, late half ps3 and ps4. I love this overview

i actually like this. almost everyone at one point had a feeling that they wanted to keep a physical game instead of selling it and box art, color, texture and all this contributes on that and everyone doesn’t notice how important this factors are.
I had no idea that the US had that kind of disc case for PS1 games! In the UK our PS1 cases were similar but they had more depth that those regular CD cases. They felt unique compared to music discs.
For PS4, there is also another variation of the 2-disc case where there is a disc spot on each side of the open case. The only example of this I have is Stardew Valley. The sound track is on a disc in a disc spot under the game manual and then the play disc is on the normal side in a disc spot. Great video as always!
I wish the Banner Saga Trilogy did that. It came with a soundtrack disc and just put it on top of the actual disc. I personally hate that so I have a disc sleeve booklet for those and any loose discs I have. It’s actually the only thing in there as I did find the cardboard sleeve for my copy of Wii Sports and sold my random loose PC disc of some Finding Nemo game.
@@TheFloodFourm it’s still a problem today and Xbox One and Series X. I’m always worried about scratching my discs when placing or removing the disc from the spindle.

Those PS1 cases took me back to my mid 20s. Newly married, and my first shot at playing a console over my PC at that time, and being able to rent the games from the local video store. Civic Video Mount Pritchard NSW for me :). Good times. Interestingly the standard jewel cases you're showing look different to the ones I got here in Australia, PAL EU versions. The hinge didn't have the black 'textured' look, and was more the frosted, or clear, plastic pretty much the same as the jewel cases as music CDs. Sometime when the PS1 jewel case broke, usually at the hinge or the prongs holding the disc in snapped, I just bought an empty jewel case and popped it all in there. Wish I kept them now, but hey 25 year old me didn't think about 2023 or retro gaming collecting at the time.

I love how nerdy this is! And if you watched this video start to finish without pausing and without being distracted, you can officially add "true gamer" to your resume / CV.
The pal ps2 cases are my favorite because they much more different with the blue cases for the games, the silver cases for platinum games (greatest hits in pal), white for gran turismo 4 and orange for eyetoy titles and some psp ports.
13:10 Just flip the psp manuals around so the spine is on the opposite side. This prevents the manual from being creases. It also works for home console games too.
i remember looking at the C64 boxart and imagin how the game was. the art was half the game back then. it was like how a trailer is. it created a feeling about the game and then when you played the game. it was just big pixels of something, but you had that box image in your mind playng the game so the graphics become better in a way. its like a book. if it has a great cover art and you read the book and see the image and imagine it while reading.
As a long time viewer and fan, I love that you included my site in the PS3 blue label section!😅 That NBA 2K14 is one of the rarest blue label titles to get nowadays (excluding the ever elusive God of War Collection Blue Cardboard Sleeve). The Blue Labels are one of the more unique subsets in the PS3 set as well. Very excellent video as per usual on your channel!
@Jesse Powell yes it did, along with a collector edition, and many variants. You can see the full list on my site. The image used was an old image from the announcement of the blue label lineup passed around via many gaming articles at the time in 2014
Man this video is so god damn great! It lights up the collector nerd in me! I hope that one day you can find the time to do region differences between cases. I'm a PAL boy myself :D
This was a great video. It's interesting to see the evolution of Playstation cases, designs, etc. Also, great choice of jazz music playing in the background. Added to the mood and vibe of the video.
You forgot to show that the ps4 box arts changed when the ps4 pro and ps4 slim released changing the graphics for the game storage size and stuff on the back of the case and showing if or not it is ps4 pro enhanced. Good video tho!!
Yeah for some reason the original GT only had 1 disc I always got in trouble for that cause my parents thought I lost it as well lol. But then again I also had GT2 in a dual case and it had 2 discs so I could see why they thought i lost one for the original GT lmao.
One of my biggest(pet peeve) grip with the PS5 is the game cases. As a physical collector, I would have loved if the PS5 had its own unique cases. The return to black and white box would have fit well with the theme.
For PS2 cases in the UK. Games from 2003 onwards or so were in a blue case. And on the top of the spine where the PlayStation logo is, the background is black oppose to a white background on the American games.
The ps1 jewel cases are the absolute best cases for games ever. So practical, aesthetic and compact - i just love them. Also they are the only cases that don't feel empty when you open them, since they are (when complete with a manual) packed, unlike games these days in big cheap feeling plastic boxes with barely anything inside. Back when Playstation had soul... :'(
PS1 had another case type in the NTSC-U region not mentioned. These were the standard slim jewel case size, but they held 2 discs. The disc tray was hinged on the right corners and was able to flip over in that direction. The second disc was held on to the back side of it. Games like Dracula: The Resurrection, Dracula: The Last Sanctuary, Dino Crisis with the Resident Evil 3 demo and Resident Evil 3 with the Dino Crisis demo are examples.
i recently started to pump up my ps1 games and from a pal perspective: between rental and retail games, we had like 5-6 different box variants until we ended with the thick ones that became the standard until the end.
Fun fact about the PS1 longboxes: The ones that look like Sega Saturn cases actually ARE Saturn cases. Sony couldn’t manufacture enough cases to meet demand so they bought cases from Sega, who has extra due to the relative failure of the Saturn.
For PS4 there are different cases for certain territories and games, for example Cyberpunk 2077 shipped in LatAm in a BluRay case, more similar to the PS3 ones.
Ah, the memories. I've been completely digital since PS4. n fact, there isn't a single disk of any kind in my house. But you did bring back older memories. Good times.
From what I can tell, there are actually 4 different, standard, NTSC PS2 cases (excluding double disc cases). You only mentioned the second and fourth versions. The third version is very similar to the fourth, but the size of the PlayStation logo and the disc spindle are different. As for the first, I haven't been able to find a ton of information on them (my research actually brought me to your video). From what I can tell, the launch games came in generic DVD cases, without any PlayStation branding. They were still that exclusive shade of blackish-blue like all PS2 cases, but the disc sat in the middle, in a different style spindle, and there was no memory card holder. I've found no information as to when they stopped using them, but the consensus is that they were used for a few months (likely just for games released in 2000).
PS2/Gamecube/Early PS3 era were ELITE. The Games came COMPLETE on disc in a hardy, and quality case. Manuals were incredibly detailed, and informative with little goodies to read and look at. Box art was more original, and higher quality. This was the era where gaming was for gamers. We didn't know it at the time but we were in the end of the golden years of gaming. The internet was coming to corrupt everything in gaming. They weren't rushing incomplete titles, and controlled by shareholders. They weren't intentionally leaving out content to sell it to you later for more money. There were no updates, no spoilers online. People were just indulging their imaginations into these created worlds and sharing it locally with their friends, family, and themselves. I went into Zelda Windwaker only seeing the cover art, and magazine previews. I was so immersed in the world. Offline, yet connected more intimately with ourselves, and the game. Games were just better. We weren't looking for high framerates, high definition, or huge open worlds. We Wanted to just have fun when we played those games. Developers stuck to their guns more rather than chasing trends like they do today. Don't get me wrong, there are brilliant games released all the time nowadays, the indie scene especially is keeping that originality alive. But games nowadays just seem to be mainly focused on what sells, and how many of them can we sell as opposed to making a good game, and letting the game sell itself. The buying experience sucks nowadays too with Companies cheaping out on anything, and everything imaginable to cut costs like these Cheap Recycled PS4 cases for PS5 where you just hold this flimsy featherweight case with only a disc inside with only 40% of the actual game on said disc. PS2, and early PS3 games had some weight to them..A Feeling that to this day get's me excited finding a PS2 game and feeling the weight of the manual I'll get to read before diving into another universe. Knowing I won't need a 128 Gigabyte Update just to make it playable. It's sad seeing the move to Digital...Digital to me is a rental. You only "own" the game until it's no longer supported. Companies make more money off of you when you go digital. They charge you the same but in reality you just have a long term rental. You can't share your game, keep your game, resell your game, eventually you can't re-dowload, and you'll have to buy it again digitally on whatever. It's amazing to me how many people are willing to pay $60+ for a game you'll never own. I own a PC, and love Steam Sales but I can justify spending $2-$20 on an experience.
A collectors note, for the ps2 without memory card holder, there’s a manufacturer logo inside the case, you will find ps2 games without the PlayStation logo but it’s the same manufacturer
I think it would be interesting to cover Greatest Hits covers. They are very common, so they're a big part of the PS library, and they're pretty interesting in how awful they mostly are.
Pretty much what I was going to say. The PS3 Greatest Hits case probably should have been included in this video because the red nontransparent case is pretty common and very different from the "awesome" original cases.
We never had standard jewel cases in the UK. We had thicker cases while also a paper sleeve in for the front, meaning you didn't have to have the manual. Something I never understood was why the US jewel cases were standard with the manual doubling as the sleeve.
So cool to see how Sony tried to find the right packaging. Though I still think the European cases are the best. They are thicker and unique looking compared to music CD cases, but still need less space. We also had the double cases for multi disc games (usually 3 disc and more), but we never had the spine rib design...not even printed.
And the other neat PS3 case thing is that on the bottom has little bit of extra plastic, so that you can have them stand up without much fear of topping over.
My guess on the SimCity case is they were anticipating 2 discs for the game, and had the box art ready but when it went gold, they figure it out it could fit on one disc and just modified what they already had.
I love fun videos like these. Keep them coming! Do you remember when they tried to change the exclusive titles on the PS4 to say “PS4 console exclusive game” with the button logos?

And if you watched this video start to finish without pausing and without being distracted, you can officially add "true gamer" to your resume / CV.
The pal ps2 cases are my favorite because they much more different with the blue cases for the games, the silver cases for platinum games (greatest hits in pal), white for gran turismo 4 and orange for eyetoy titles and some psp ports.
Don't forget that every game also had holo sticker in PS1 and PS2 era ;)

Just flip the psp manuals around so the spine is on the opposite side.
As someone who has loved Playstation since 2 years old with the OG PS, you’re very much appreciated by me! Please keep it up, Mystic! 👏
The Lao cardboard PS1 cases are my favorite due to looking so retro. 👍🏼
As a long time viewer and fan, I love that you included my site in the PS3 blue label section!😅
That NBA 2K14 is one of the rarest blue label titles to get nowadays (excluding the ever elusive God of War Collection Blue Cardboard Sleeve).
The Blue Labels are one of the more unique subsets in the PS3 set as well.
Very excellent video as per usual on your channel!
It's a fantasic site, very indepth and informative. A great source for any PS3 enthusiast and/or collector.
Bad ass
Thanks Jim!
Would love to see someone did that video for Pegi/EU region.
@mysticryan
I wanted you to make this video for so long!
Thanks brother!
My dad beat my brother for losing the second disk to GT that didn’t exist. Funny you brought that up, what a xmas to remember.
I've been looking for a thread or a post like this for a long time. This video answered many of my questions. Thanks.
The first few lines of this video just made my day. Love you and your content, brother.
Games like Dracula: The Resurrection, Dracula: The Last Sanctuary, Dino Crisis with the Resident Evil 3 demo and Resident Evil 3 with the Dino Crisis demo are examples.
i recently started to pump up my ps1 games
and from a pal perspective: between rental and retail games, we had like 5-6 different box variants until we ended with the thick ones that became the standard until the end.
Fun fact about the PS1 longboxes: The ones that look like Sega Saturn cases actually ARE Saturn cases. Sony couldn’t manufacture enough cases to meet demand so they bought cases from Sega, who has extra due to the relative failure of the Saturn.
Incredible video, thank you so much for taking the time to share this!
I love videos talking about the small things, makes me feel not so crazy that others talk about these things too and not just me 😂😂😂😂
Loved the presentation for the last PS3 case. Literally had my eyes widened at that moment! 👀
And, yes, I'd also call it a monstrosity.
"over-explained and unnecessarily complicated?" now you're speaking my language!
This is sick man. PS2 cases are perfect to me. They’re the most timeless out of the bunch.
I think I like PS2 and PS4 the best.
love the way you talk about it... the love for the games and the platform is always there to see.. LOVE IT.....
Couldn't help but notice how perfect your shelf of Nintendo Switch cases looked over your shoulder the whole video. 😆
Love this, very informative! I didn't know why some of my ps3 games had the red label on the spine and others didn't.
I’ll never forget the ps3 black case for ac revelations! was so cool
Idk how I feel about the omission of Greatest Hits, but thank you for this video
A collectors note, for the ps2 without memory card holder, there’s a manufacturer logo inside the case, you will find ps2 games without the PlayStation logo but it’s the same manufacturer
I remember first steelbook was king kong on the PS2 - still no idea where my parents got it from as we lived in rural Ireland lol
This video would be a great video to explain why Sony creates Greatest Hits.
Mystic's new setup is so dope! I'll never get sick of watching his vid's.
Excellent video! I was actually just thinking about Sonys different game cases just a couple weeks ago!
We never had standard jewel cases in the UK. We had thicker cases while also a paper sleeve in for the front, meaning you didn't have to have the manual.
Something I never understood was why the US jewel cases were standard with the manual doubling as the sleeve.
Loved watching this video and seeing all the different Box Art and Cases!
Love rhe song you are singing. Just chilling at your place. Love the song In color. You did a amazing job. Have a great rest of your day
So cool to see how Sony tried to find the right packaging. Though I still think the European cases are the best. They are thicker and unique looking compared to music CD cases, but still need less space. We also had the double cases for multi disc games (usually 3 disc and more), but we never had the spine rib design...not even printed.
What a great thumbnail, so much effort goes into these videos.
I always thought the “Only For” meant it only worked on that particular system rather than the exclusivity to that console. This was back on N64
I have a eu version of Legend of Dragoon and like yours, the artwork on the disks just look amazing.
I love that you’ve done a video like this.
Never knew they made a Champloo umd. Thats such a gem imo!
And the other neat PS3 case thing is that on the bottom has little bit of extra plastic, so that you can have them stand up without much fear of topping over.
Mystic you always bring a smile to my face, thankyou!
I was just thinking about that couple day's ago ant did look anything about that in youtube but couldn't find any videos, thank you
As always, I love the videos man. Keep up the good work man.
My guess on the SimCity case is they were anticipating 2 discs for the game, and had the box art ready but when it went gold, they figure it out it could fit on one disc and just modified what they already had.
awesome video! sad you didn't include other regions, especially EU & JP.
I've been waiting so so long for this video!!!
I love fun videos like these. Keep them coming! Do you remember when they tried to change the exclusive titles on the PS4 to say “PS4 console exclusive game” with the button logos?
