I am relatively new to the hobby. I'm 20 and in college and have been running Lionel since the mid-1990s when I was given a simple 4-4-2 Santa Fe freight set one Christmas. So long as Lionel offers the basic smoking steamers that they have always offered, I don't worry about the crazy prices on these nicer trains. All it took was that 4-4-2 and its short freight with illuminated caboose to get me hooked, and today, I spend an extra couple hundred a month just to have a two bedroom apartment.
These older videos take me back. I remember going with my dad to his place of work one summer and just hanging out in his office binging both The Full Bucketniers and these reviews. Ah the olden days.
Alway informative! Thank you for the background and history on this unique locomotive, Eric! I like the fact that your review is not rushed and so thorough.
Cause whats the point of stereo sound from a locomotive if its in a 3d environment. Unless you want to fill it with speakers that play each individual sound, then a single speaker will do. It gives off a great effect none the less
Eric, this is the first time it took me TWO cups of coffee to watch one of your videos...lol. This is a FANTASTIC lengthy video with a ton of good information in it. I like you postive opinion about Lionel being on the cutting edge. I agree, I want them to continue with these new ideas for our hobby. I also want to thank you Eric for the massive amount of time it must have takeb you to film and edit this video. I enjoyed kicking back with my coffee and watching this video soooo much... thanks
And with that, I can now say that I'm officially a proud owner of the Lionel Vision Line UP Baldwin Centipedes. I found one for sale on Ebay earlier this week and got it for a very attractive price that I couldn't refuse. One of my most desired O gauge locomotives is now officially a part of my collection. Words can't describe how euphoric I'm right now. I will keep this set forever.
Great review Eric, the detail on those trucks is incredible, and the sound is great! Awesome fans on top as well! Looks like they hit the nail on the head with this engine. Thanks for sharing, and have a great one!
That’s a wonderful idea. Maybe they could have some of the doors on the side open up so you could see the two prime movers inside. The engine is so big that they could fit all of the electronics in it.
Once again, thanks for another great review. It was because of you that I have the Vision Line CP Hybrid. I liked what you said about making innovations . It's like buying a car during it's first model year. Once your work out the kinks, you usually end up with a pretty good product. At least Lionel is trying to stay on the cutting edge. As for having both metal and plastic body engines, my other GEVO is the MTH one. I happen to like them both.
Amazing review. Thanks again for all the time you put into this. You have really done so much to help our hobby grow. The sound seems amazing even via video. After watching your review I am wondering if it is prototypical for every engine to have 2 builders plates. I would imagine that it is if Lionel adds 2 to every engine. Thanks again Eric, really enjoyed kicking back for an hour and watching your review!
Watching this in Sept 2023. Great review as always and well done on showcasing the dual engine sound collaboration. What would this item retail for if it was just released today with 2023 pricing!
Great video Eric! I liked the look at the Colorado Room. That thing is massive! It looks so weird going through curves. BTW, I just bought that Morton Salt Hopper the other day so it's funny to see it in your video now.
I think the engine exhaust is the best feature I have seen on any model loco, that includes sound to. You're never going to replicate steam engine smoke but I can see real progress with diesel engines and possibly gas turbines.
Excellent review Eric.I run N-Gauge myself, but I really enjoy your well thought-out product reviews and appreciate how you present the products.Regarding your time and effort you put into these presentations,I think it would be a nice gesture on the manufacturers part if some their marketing people would step up to the plate and offer you their new prototypes and other product releases to review for us at a substancial discount or even free due to the fact that it is a good promotion. Thanks Bud.
AWESOME review Eric!!!!! I love the Centipede and think it was worth every penny. I agree with you that the sound system is the best feature and believe that it is without a doubt the best sound system ever put into a model engine. I also agree with you that innovation with some operating issues is far better than no innovations at all. Hopefully Lionel will continue with the Vision Line and advanced features!!! Anyways, thanks again for all your hard work bro and have a great one!
Eric. Awesome review. Amazing engine. Keep up the outstanding work. I noticed two GE Evo's on the layout. Hoping for a Lionel Vision vs. MTH Premier comparison in the near future???
I like your videos, very detailed and informative about each locomotive. Is there another video depicting how the centipede negotiates curves? Very interesting! Thank you!
Eric, when you said "Postwar engines have maybe a pound or so of pulling power" I started putting weights on the frame of a tender for my postwar 2056...it can pull 15 pounds
The pulling force is measured laterally, not by how many pounds are being pulled. That same 15 pd weight would require much more pulling force if it wasn't on wheels, and that could be measured by attaching a pull force measuring device (like a fish weighing scale?) to the weights and seeing how much force is needed to pull them (I'm spit-balling about the fish scale, so maybe someone has a better method).
@@DarrellJMartin that was a misunderstanding that my dumb younger self got, in general I wasn't interpreting the words right, you are right I'm not telling you that you aren't it's just that in a more clear manner, it's tractive effort not how much it can pull, made that connection like 5 months ago
That is a lot of engine almost 4 feet, the camera definitely doesn't do the size justice, surprised you were able to get the whole thing in frame. It would certainly be magnificent to see this thing in person going down the rails. The moving fans and faint horn sounds are great minor but significant details that add to the realism. I find the Centipede to be very odd and very cool by its size and it not being a very successful engine in real life. I wish Lionel would do more of these weird/obscure engines that are more forlorn and not very mainstream as Vision Line models and bring more attention to them. It's also been awhile since they've made a Vision Line diesel, I would love it if they made a Vision F3 or something like that. Great video Eric!
Eric. You hands down do the best reviews on UA-cam. Lionel is sure making some amazing products these days. I just wish I could afford one. Any one. LOL
Very nice set! This looks so good it's a shame the UP cancelled order. I can imagine photos of this locomotive on Sherman Hill. Thanks for sharing your video.
Great review. You talked about the sound being good? No,it's GREAT!!!! The prime mover sounds were recorded using one of the only DRS-6-6-1500 locomotives, Magma #10, still running. It's located at the Arizona Railway Museum Chandler AZ. I have been next to this locomotive when running and as I listen I close my eyes and could almost feel the vibrations. I am into HO but love the detail Lionel put in. Wish our locomotives could have running fans.
I just picked up an MTH Premier version from the MTH 2004 volume 1 edition. It's gorgeous. However, I'd still like to get this Lionel version, too. It's simply stunning.
Were all the centipedes built before the process of turbochraging the motors? This is a really nice model! It would look nice in any layout set from 1947-today!
Great engine! When you first started the hobby, and you hooked the legacy base to mth tiu, did you ever have a problem when your legacy engine was on the same track as an mth engine, your mth engine or engines would have problems, like reseting its self or not even turning on?
At "The Train Loft" I saw a single Centipede with the cab window inserts imploded as you had described. At the time I was wondering what had happened to it, but now I know.
I think the centipedes are one rare occasion where I'd rather have a pilot version than a painted version. The pilot models look very nice and since these were so obscure irl I feel like it would look equally out of place either way. Also, since they aren't in any of my favorite schemes, I would want a Milwaukee road one if they made one and I could find the money.
The two units #998 and #999 were originally the two demonstrators and would go to the Union Pacific after demonstrating. But, like you said UP cancelled the order and Baldwin ended up scrapping them.
Yes, Broadway Limited is the only one (to my knowledge) that makes them, not sure if you can get one from their site still, but there are a couple on ebay, but I don't think there are any of them in a UP scheme.
Union Pacific ordered a pair of Centipedes from Baldwin but canceled the order before taking delivery. Baldwin kept them as a demonstrator set. Lionel (and BLI in HO and N scales) produced their Centipedes in this "what if?" UP livery, but unlike a lot of fantasy liveries this one has a realistic basis.
Did you happen to have a slight issue with your engines when you first got them? When I went to go pick them up from the train shop, I tested them on the test track and got lights, sounds, and smoke, but it wouldn't move forward or reverse. When I got home, I tested them on my own personal test track, and everything worked as it should. A friend of mine in my club bought the Pennsy version new and he had an issue with them. He sent it back to the train shop, which then sent them off to Lionel, who corrected the issue. Apparently, Lionel knew there was a slight problem with these engines but never issued a recall apparently because they did not want to deal with backlash and everyone sending in their engines to Lionel for repair. I'm just curious to find out if yours had the same problem right out of the box.
A few nits: Centipedes had two 8-cylinder motors in them, not one--I heard only one start up. UP didn't introduce silver trucks until ~1956--long after Centipede (and Baldwin) production ceased--they would have been Harbor Mist Gray like other UP locos of the era. The rear of the unit should be yellow to match the sides; all-gray rear ends came along around the same time as the silver trucks. Still, a great fantasy set--if only Baldwin's lengthy delay in delivering them caused UP to cancel their order.
I IMAGINE THAT ONE OF THE PROBLEMS OF THE PROTOTYPE IS A LACK OF FUEL TANK CAPACITY!! WITH ALL WHEELS BELOW AND TWO ENGINES AND AUXILIARIES UPSTAIRS,LEFT LITTLE ROOM FOR FUEL TANKS!! STILL IT IS TOO BAD NONE WERE SAVED IN PRESERVATION!! KEEP THEM ROLLING BROTHERS!! 👍👍

Cooling fans were have been electrically driven (not directly connected to either motor) and thermostatically controlled based on coolant temp, not engine speed. If the engine was just starting and the motors cold, they wouldn't be rotating at all.
Nice Job Eric!! Hey was wondering... I just bought the same model and have to send mine back to Lionel as the glass in both cabs was broken!! Seems its due to the method of packing. Appears engine could move in the styrofoam and the styrofoam corner above the cab glass poked and broke it out. Wondering if you saw any issues? Cheers Don
Guys the reason why Eric talks so much is to inform you. Its better to know more than know less. To me Erics "too much talking" helps!
"Centipede"
quite a frightening name for a locomotive with such a cute face
its called that cuase its long
@Tommy Mathew let's make it longer

Lionel just went nuts when making this centipede did they?
How come model trains don't have stereo sound????? we have those types of speakers in our phones so what's the big deal???????
Cause whats the point of stereo sound from a locomotive if its in a 3d environment. Unless you want to fill it with speakers that play each individual sound, then a single speaker will do. It gives off a great effect none the less
Hey Eric, here's an idea I thought of: Use the 999 engine and it's "ghostly sounds" as a Halloween/spooky thing. The Ghost Train! :D
What a monster! And yet it is so sophisticated. This vision line is breathtaking.
OK I think my Big boy engine just shrunk compared to this beast lol
catlover 2345 I think so
We should all shrink the Virginian triplexes
Some of their Vision Line features have already worked their way down the line. The smoking whistle is now on some of the starter sets.

I'm sorry but $2,200 for this thing? Wow, this train better deliver me sandwiches on demand for that price.
And regular conjugal visits.

I never had any issues with mine and never heard of any widespread issue with them.
I agree. What's the point of giving negative opinions constantly?
Lionel is making a Vision Line rendition of the Union Pacific Big Boy.
Awesome video! Very well done.
This is one locomotive I am surprised they produced! The "centipede" would be one of the most difficult to make and ultimately sought after.....
Subjective comment but I'd have gone for the Pennsy 5 stripe version. But what a beast these things were! Maintenance nightmare from all accounts.

Interesting, I agree I'm always looking for oddball locos like BNSF #9647 which I received the other day.
Fuck, a four foot locomotive? My entire layout is four feet wide. I live in an apartment, so I'm pretty much stuck with N scale.
That train is crazy awesome
Really, the sound was excellent.
Are you talking about 1/2 centipede that's just the single unit?
Great review Eric!
Awesome job, Eric!
I do not really care for diesel but these two look at more of these two diesel engines are really fantastic well the fans and everything well Lionel has really done with this if good favor by giving us such fantastic products
The Horn almost sounds like Southern Pacific GS-6 (Unpainted Pilot) GS-2 (Daylight)
Despite the failure, I bet if all the flaws were fixed, these locomotives would actually work and be fast freights and express passenger engines.
Unfortunately, Baldwin ruined their chances
PS: The diesel sound is wrong. It's the sound of an Alco 244 prime mover and not the low rpm Baldwin 608SC.
I picked up the Baldwin demonstrators last year and they rarely are run, as they look awkward while pulling 100 Scale Diecast Ore Cars.
I heard that a former lionel employee joined Broadway Limited and helped put their Centipede into production.
Woud you allow me to use a bit of footage fro this video? (Don't worry. My channel is anti-profit. Only for entertainment and music videos.)
